CINEMATHEQUE: translating film, art and architecture
// Academic // The project details with the notion of architecture
manifested in art particularly through film. The intrinsic interrelationship between architecture, art and film in creating place and also in their ability to displace provides the ground for an exploration into emergent architectonic qualities and suggestions. These later create a palette in creating an architectural proposal for the Cinematheque for Sydney. The proposal begins with an exploration into the film, LÉclisse and the notio of the placeless. Through thematic investigations into the placeless scenes, an architectural palette is formed which later translates into the architectural topology for the Cinematheque. As one ascends through the galleries, one is left with the question on the identity of the Cinematheque as well as our own.
Process - series | Explorations into the exposition of the cinematheque, setting and manifestations of a ground; materiality and the breaking ground, circulation through friction and relief and atmosphere in darkness and light
The artistic and thematic exploration of the film eventually forms a palette which dictates an architecture that details with the uncertain journey of one’s identity between relief and uncertainty, exposed and enclosed.
New Cinematheque | Axonometric, Section, Elevations, Detail and Perspectives
The new Cinematheque for Sydney breaks free of the ground. It emerges out from carved rock, revealing itself to its audience. As the frame of the Cinematheque further breaks down as it continues to grow, it begins to associate itself with the mine, metaphorically. The further away from the outskirts of the mine, the stronger the connection becomes as your willingness to visit is challenged.

// Academic // Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Australia // Flinders Street Station and its unfolding and evolving civic realm. Melbourne’s iconic station becomes the catalyst for a series of macro and micro explorations into the urban framework of a city. Premise for the Growing City explores the idea of the Melbourne as a city that is continually changing. Its diverse and unique cultures informing a morphing typology, an aesthetic that is never complete. A master plan, Permanent Structures for Temporary Things, detailed the premise of an infrastructure consisting of platforms and walkways; and the strategies such as leasing agreements; addition of units to foster an architectural proposal. Acyclical process of building and deconstructing as units/pods continuall iinhabit and vacate integrated cores within the structure, leading to a dynamic architectural typology.

// Academic // The Fret Board: a platform for expression. 99 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst, a community theatre space for the disenfranchised, politicized youth of Sydney, focused on a core architectural concept of syncopation - the musical convention for a break from a rigid structure or hierarchy. This concept stemmed from historic movements that seek to break free from the status quo within the cultural realm. The Fret Board will provide a place for teenagers and young adults to come together where a sense of liberation and expression is fostered. The building, in its architectural and structural integration, would ultimately serve to highlight, or exhibit, artistic and political agenda that are otherwise considered anti-hierarchical.

Syncopation: a break in a rigid structure or form. In its syncopated qualities and a central void that connects the various functions of the building, the architecture of the Fret Board seeks to identify with a community that attempts to cultivate a positive political movement, expressed in the form of art, theatre and ‘comingtogether.’

Detailed resolution to reflect architectural and structural intent, through facade and interior strategies of exposing steel beams as well as the presence of “syncopated beams” that traverse diagonally from column to column. The structural and architectural strategies are integrated and work to emphasise the concept of syncopation. Syncopated beams require more depth and they have longer lengths to transfer load over, thus creating a ‘break’in the structural rhythmic pattern,

In it’s almost brutal approach, the Fret Board stands as a mark, a platform where the youth can express raw ideas and raw emotions whether it be politically or culturally ignited.
Thus, from the three models discussed above, it can be concluded that the geometry of crumpled sheets are widely studied. However, these models do not specifically identify the contribution of its geometry into its material property, particularly strength. Nonetheless, its consideration on characterisation of compressed crumpled energy and discussion on internal structures allow possible assumptions to be considered. is usefulisinuseful measuring dynamic stress-strain responseresponse of a material such as such its Young or in measuring dynamic stress-strain of a material as its Modulus Young Modulus or is usefulisinuseful measuring in measuring dynamicdynamic stress-strain stress-strain responseresponse of a material of a material such as such its Young as its Modulus Young Modulus or or structures mechanical stress (HBM mechanical stressAustralia). The processed images of the failed compressed and crumpled samples for low, medium and high densities are expressed in Figure 8.2
The study found that compressed crumpled tissue papers posses characteristically high compressive strength ranging from 90 to 140 MPa. The relationship of these peak stresses to the relative densities is defined by a power-law, which is also consistent with those found by Bouzaiz and Masse (2013) in their study on the ‘Compression of Aluminium Thin Foils...’. Furthermore, the relationship between strains at which the peak stress occurs and the relative densities was found to be defined by an exponential function. This is again consistent with the results found by previous literature. The characteristically high compressive strength of the samples provides an argument for further investigation into its structural applications.

// The Hills Shire links the city of Sydney to the Blue Mountains. This presents an opportunity to extend the landscaped backdrop to Castle Hill. The outcrops and sandstone bluffs as well as the historic character of the site, which includes dense native planting, instigates an architectural response that mimics an eroded landscape, opening up for a central green link.

The proposal modulates along the hilllside with an architectural language that reflect the sweeping and fractured shapes of the sandstone. In the same way that foliage holds itself to the tops and edges of the outcrops, landscaping is also integrated into the upper building forms.
HUNTERVIEW VILLAGE 3.0 DESIGN EVOLUTION AND RESPONSE 3.01 CONCEPT AND PRECEDENT •
The site is located at the edge of the traditional rural landscape, and the new, growing residential precinct. The building sits directly adjacent the riparian landscape corridor that provides an undulating backdrop to the bush.
Simple wayfinding signage, which are integrated into the building facade and materials, to navigate the development.
to navigate the development that are integrated into the building facade and material.s
The key concepts include: •
Re-interpreting the rural vernacular through conceiving the building as a cluster of structures
•
Bedding the new development into the hillside to mitigate impact to houses in close proximity.
•
Simple crisp detailing with shaded verandahs to encourage external pedestrian activation of development.

2015-08-13 127 bowden street - design Report
Relating to the industrial aesthetic and history of meadowbank, John witton bridge was employed as the starting point for the design.
an analogy of the bridge breaks the building into three core components: • anchors/Pylons
// Located in an urban renewal precinct rich in history and opportunity. with linkage to transport, and local public amenities., Alia draws upon the existing Jonh Witton Bridge across the Parramatta River. These formed three architectural typologies - pylons, deck, screen - for the facade of the building. DESIGN CONCEPT GENERATORS
A significant design challenge has been how to create a sense of place for a new community in an environment that will transform significantly over the coming years. The existing context is a greenfield setting, surrounded by market gardens and farms with little to draw upon, however the future of Leppington will be a significant urban centre. The development needs to be relate to context now and evolve into the future.
In order to differentiate the development and to create a successful urban environment a distinct and attractive place has been created. By setting a unique character and atmosphere the development will feel humanised, creating a pleasant and welcoming environment to inhabit.
THE PODIUM
The careful crafting of the ground plane, ‘The Podium’ brings the natural Australian landscape into the heart of the communal spaces, creating a rich and inviting context. The materials, warm colours and textures at this level create visual interest and relate to a human scale, creating a distinct characteristics that reflect the landscape character and underlying cultural heritage.

THE TOWER
KEY DESIGN GENERATORS: • STRONG
The crafted landscape and podium setting build a base on which the main built form towers are set. In order to contrast with the soft edges and the rich colour of the podium the towers present themselves as strong bold forms in white. They are carved through strong openings and are interwoven by sweeping balconies which reach out onto the street frontages and the central communal open spaces. Strong gestures such as cantilevers and overhangs define the spaces underneath and mark important thoroughfare. Street edges and facades that open to the courtyards are broken down into a series of feature elements, creating a sense of identity and unique address for each building.

The soft edges and undulations in the podium facade give the landscape presence and make it feel inviting, like a shelter. The heart of each home is the open plan kitchen and dining area which connects seamlessly with a private terrace some with built-in planter boxes to create your own herb garden. In additional, a central communal open space rolls alongs the ground plane of the development, and a sky pool is featured to connect its communal rooftop open spaces.
A key design feature of all Hawthorn Park kitchens is the sculpted form of the island bench. Presented as either composite stone or natural stone, its diagonal profile reflects the architecture of the building exterior. The kitchen is designed as in integrated smart storage system to cater for everyday needs.

The end product has been adapted to suit the end user in mind - my niece. The original felt design has been replaced with leather in a bold colour and the legs have been stained black in order to prolong the longevity of the chair.
