WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW • • • • • • •

What is Workplace Giving? Why does it make sense? How does it work? - Corporate team volunteering - Corporate skilled volunteering - Corporate charitable donating & fundraising Frequently asked questions How to set up a winning Workplace Giving Program? GoodCompany

WHAT IS WORKPLACE GIVING? Traditionally, Workplace Giving has always been seen as simple charitable pre-tax donating by staff and corporate entities but GoodCompany believes that if Workplace Giving is to become a strategic corporate tool valued by both business and charities, it must do more. GoodCompany is the only platform in Australia that offers business an enhanced Workplace Giving service incorporating: • • • • •

Once off and recurring donations, pre-tax or via credit card Charitable fundraising by the corporate sector for events and emergencies Charitable teambuilding volunteering opportunities Skilled volunteering opportunities for teams and individuals Charitable gift voucher services for corporate gift giving, corporate matching of employee fundraising, donating and employee rewards programs

WORKPLACE GIVING MAKES GREAT BUSINESS SENSE The Human Resources Perspective In an era of heightened corporate transparency, greater workforce mobility, and severe skills shortages, culture, engagement, and retention have emerged as top issues for business leaders. (1) GoodCompany’s Workplace Giving platform enables business to work with more charities and charitable projects in Australia than any other platform. It is also the only platform that combines corporate fundraising with both skilled and unskilled volunteering.

IMPROVE YOUR STAFF RETENTION

CREATE A MORE ENGAGED WORKFORCE

ATTRACT BETTER CANDIDATES TO YOUR BUSINESS

IMPROVE THE WELLBEING OF YOUR TEAMS

IMPROVE STAFF RETENTION How much does your business spend every year recruiting and inducting new members of staff? Building a loyal and committed team through a GoodCompany Workplace Giving program (ie; fundraising, volunteering and charity gift vouchers) is an effective tool to counter the ever increasing mobility of employees and the costs associated with staff turnover. A company of 200 people with a 10 percent annual staff turnover could be spending more than $400,000 per annum to cover the costs of recruitment, training and reduced productivity. An organisation committed to workplace giving could reduce that turnover by up to 50% - that’s a potential saving of over $200,000. (2)

What others are saying: Research by emotional health expert Dr Steven Stein, indicates employees are loyal to companies that are doing good things in the world. (3) Research in 2015 that assessed over 300 studies, analysing the results to determine the financial and business value of Corporate Social Responsibility found that companies with a strong CSR commitment could experience reductions in turnover by as much as 50 per cent, with workers willing to take up to a five per cent pay cut to work for a company doing CSR well. (2) A study undertaken on the impact of volunteering at Shell indicated that those who participated in the program report that “Shell is much better than most work places” and are more likely to state “I willingly put more into my job than is expected” and “I like the people I work with at Shell” (4) The 2011 Deloitte Volunteer IMPACT survey found millennials (employees aged 18-26) who participate in volunteering are twice as likely to rate their corporate culture as positive, and more likely to feel loyal towards their company. (5)

CREATE A MORE ENGAGED WORKFORCE Disengagement costs Australia $32 billion in lost productivity every year. (6) Studies have found that on average, companies with a highly engaged workforce rate 86% higher with their customers. (7) Companies with a highly engaged workforce are 70% more likely to have higher productivity, and enjoy higher profitability (7) Engaged employees deliver 50% higher sales. (7) Did you know that only 18 per cent of Australians love their work? (8)

WORKPLACE GIVING IMPACTS EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT What others are saying: “I love it here”

87% of employees who volunteered with their companies reported an improved perception of their employer, 1 while 94% of employee volunteers believed volunteer-ism was a core component or positive influence on job satisfaction. (9)

“I trust the senior leadership and the direction in which we are going”

When companies act pro-socially, employees view themselves in a positive light, generating trust between you and your employee. (9)

“I feel emotionally connected to the company”

A 2008 study found that companies that enable employees to volunteer produce affective commitment, creating a warm perception of themselves and the organisation they work for as helpful, caring and benevolent. (9)

“I believe I am contributing to the success of my company”

In a major study by the University of Georgia, employees who volunteered “worked harder, were more willing to help their colleagues, [talked] positively about their company, [and] were less likely to waste time at work or miss meetings.” They just tend to be better performing individuals. (9)

“I’m not stressed”

For people that volunteered within the last year: 74% say that volunteering makes them feel healthier. 94% say that volunteering improves their mood. 78% say that volunteering lowers their stress levels. (9)

“The culture here is amazing”

64% of employees who actively volunteer said that volunteering with work colleagues has strengthened their work relationships. 3 Millennials who frequently participate in their company’s volunteer activities are twice as likely to rate their corporate culture as very positive, as compared to Millennials who rarely or never volunteer. (9)

ATTRACT BETTER CANDIDATES TO YOUR BUSINESS CSR is becoming a factor in a candidate’s employment decision. According to the Undercover Recruiter, 53% of workers say that “a job where they can make an impact” is important to their happiness, and 72% of students about to enter the workforce agree. (10) A study titled “The Cost of a Bad Reputation” found that qualified job candidates have strong reservations about joining corporations with bad reputations. For example, half of those surveyed said they’d need more than a 50% pay-hike to move from a company with a good reputation to one with a bad reputation… and 76% said they would not join a company with a bad reputation even if they were unemployed! (11) The 2014 Millennial Impact Report by Achieve, surveyed 1,500 employed millennials— people aged 20 to 34. About a third of respondents said that their companies’ volunteer policies affected their decision to apply for a job, 39 percent said that it influenced their decision to interview, and 55 percent said that such policies played into their decision to accept an offer. (12)

IMPROVE THE WELLBEING OF YOUR TEAMS Employee volunteering leads to engagement in the workplace. Engaged employees practice safety. Safer employees reduce health care costs. Corporate volunteering fosters a unique expression of corporate connectivity. Increased connectivity in the workplace results in stronger social support for employees. Strong social support reduces negative health issues while increasing positive health benefits. In a recent study conducted by VolunteerMatch and UnitedHealthcare entitled “Do Good Live Well Study Reviewing the Benefits of Volunteering” researchers found that companies reported improved physical and emotional health of employees who volunteer. (13) Volunteering influences the six signs of wellness, including happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, sense of control over life, and physical and emotional health. (14)

WORKPLACE GIVING MAKES GREAT BUSINESS SENSE The marketing perspective In an increasingly competitive world where leading brands face competitor imitation Workplace Giving offers long term brand differentiation and has the power to build lasting loyalty and brand equity among consumers Consumers want to interact with companies that care. This may explain the success of emerging US optical company Warby Parker which recently outpolled a range of well know IT giants for innovation for its Buy One Give One campaign. For every pair of glasses sold another pair is donated in a developing nation. In a Global CSR Study, consumers state that they have a more positive image (93%), are more likely to trust (90%) and are more loyal to (88%) companies that support social and environmental issues. (15) Further, global consumers consider CSR commitments when they look at which companies they want doing business in their communities (84%), where to seek employment (79%) and what investments to make (67%). (15)

Safeguard your future Safeguard your brand by assigning characteristics that are difficult to emulate and which offer enduring competitive advantage – become a “good member of the community” Millennials in particular are driven to employment opportunities with organisations that share their values – become an employer of first choice. As an employer it is important to create as many connections with your teams to ensure quality outputs and longevity of service. A connection of values affords business long term strategic strength. GoodCompany believes an effective Workplace Giving program that is aligned to a business and brand will also build a more enduring link for the brand with consumers. These links enable the brand to grow and also can assist business in overcoming periods of downturn or crisis.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Should the program be managed in house or outsourced? We are thrilled when any business decides to connect with their community and initiate Workplace Giving programs. At GoodCompany we believe that we offer a shortcut for business in establishing effective Workplace Giving for five reasons: 1. Existing relationships with over 1500 charities and causes providing business and employees with more choice. 2. An existing back-end system that enables efficient, accurate and reportable payments to charities from business payroll systems. 3. A proven system for sourcing both skilled and unskilled volunteering opportunities throughout Australia. 4. An existing framework for business to cost effectively brand their Workplace Giving ensuring the most effective and widespread exposure. 5. Innovative launch programs and matched giving programs that maximise social and commercial returns.

Should the program support one or two charities or should the choice be broader? GoodCompany believes, and studies from across the globe concur, that a successful Workplace Giving program offers employees choice. The greater the choice of cause and charity the more likely that business is to achieve its targeted employee participation rates.

How do we measure success and what are reasonable KPI’s for a workplace giving program? The key to a successful Workplace Giving program is employee participation. GoodCompany works closely with business to assist them create a Workplace Giving program that is employee friendly. GoodCompany can also work with business to create the initial communications and assist with the program sell through. In terms of KPI’s we prefer to use an employee participation metric as a measure of performance in addition to funds raised or hours worked. GoodCompany recognises that a Workplace Giving program must work for business and to achieve that outcome we must see employee involvement. In year 1 of a new Workplace Program we would expect to see a minimum of 20% of the workforce engaging with the program.

How can interest and participation in the program be maintained? Constant reporting of the outcomes of Workplace Giving should be available to staff to reinforce its value. Such reporting may take the form of human interest stories about charities impacted, or it may be in the form of awards provided to staff who actively engage in the program. Workplace Giving reporting should become a standard procedure within the business.

How do we measure social return on the investment? GoodCompany is serious about measuring the social returns on investment. When volunteering we ask charities to place a value on that role so we can calculate the savings to the charity. In addition to funds raised, when measuring the impact of donations GoodCompany can provide analysis around how many chickens, goats, books or hours of cancer research have been donated. Such is the power of having the largest range of charitable projects on earth!

HOW TO SET UP A WINNING WORKPLACE GIVING PROGRAM Get Ready, Get Set and GO! GET READY

Like any strategic business program a Workplace Giving Program needs commitment from the top. Management need to understand the business case and benefits and to demonstrate to staff that the program is at the heart of your company culture. Staff want to know that the senior management is personally involved, not just by matching donations, although that can supercharge your company’s impact.

GET SET

Now it’s time to set up your dream team to deliver the program. With GoodCompany at the core of this team we will require just a few hours input from Payroll and IT, plus your time to modify and customise the design, FAQs and policies (like a day’s paid volunteer leave). GoodCompany has helped dozens of companies get set for success

GO!

GoodCompany believes the success of the program lies in the launch. Our Charity Gift Vouchers can directly engage staff in celebrating your new Workplace Giving Platform. All staff are gifted a few dollars and directed to spend the voucher on their charities of choice. Once done they are encouraged to make a similar monthly donation. Launch is also a wonderful opportunity to motivate staff to set up for Volunteer Alerts so that the system can actively match them to volunteer opportunities based on their skills and interests.

…And keep going! The number one motivation for giving is seeing what the donation of time or money can achieve. GoodCompany is custom built to help share, report and deliver these outcomes and stories to staff and stakeholders on an ongoing basis.
