Anais Alexandre,
M. Alberto Rivera,
Writer
Writer M. Alberto Rivera has been many things over the years: musician, sailor, liberal conservative, antisocial activist, and fully unqualified loudmouth. Currently, he spends his time writing for this and many other fine publications. He is not concerned with, nor is he consumed by conspiricay theories, but is always bemused by what people fail to notice in plain view.
Anais Alexandre is a Miamibased Food Writer and Food Photographer. She is much more than a food enthusiast, she is a food lover, aficionada and devotee. Her fervor to hold all the knowledge of food in her grasp propels her to travel to all areas of South Florida to uncover all of Miamiโs phenomenal, and sometimes secret eateries.
Elmo Love, Photographer A middle DSLR.
little over a year ago I got stuck in the of writing a book and picked up a 30,000+ clicks, and several equipment upgrades later, life is awesome. Iโm doing things with my cameras that leave me speechless at times. I have lots of respect for people who study the craft. However, I only learn by doing, so I just keep shooting. I donโt dwell on my mistakes. I try to learn from my successes rather than my failures. I let every shoot teach me new lessons, and never say no to a bizarre opportunity. I believe that the art is out there, waiting to be captured. I take pictures and make photographs. I rather despise the phrase โcreating images.โ ELMO elmoloveftl@gmail.com ModelPort.

Beer Goggles Blogger, Writer An insensitive and opinionated jerk?Wellโฆ Iโve been called worse things to my face as recently as last week, so I really donโt mind itโฆ but I appreciate the ones letting me know if they agree, disagree or got something other than apathy to my blog, as it helps me know who reads me. I tend to talk just about anything, from personal experiences having fun out there, to crazy stuff I read about on the web, to things we all should take a moment to think about. Anything I post comes from my point of view, just as I see it through my beergoggles.

Welcome to the first edition of Karma Scene Magazine! Some of you already know me personally, and others just know me as Karen from Karma ProGroup. I am a native of Floridian and have been involved in the service and entertaining business for about 20 years, and I have put together a team of very creative people to bring you a guide of โWhere to Go & What to Doโ here in South Florida. Our goal is to give to you a magazine rich in content, with an interesting mix of featured articles from food and entertainment to the funny, rare and sometimes politically incorrect reality views of some of our collaborators. In all, we will bring you the one place to find whatever is on for your palette for the day, week or month while supporting our local community of fundraisers, artist, venues and establishments, travel & leisure and whatever we think goes with the rest. This is all possible thanks to our vision and the blind faith many have put in this publication and I would like to thank you all that have helped with their gift of
letter from the editor talent, artistic abilities, precious time and most of all, their encouragement. We are excited to have the opportunity to discover the rich sands of the beaches and the hidden inland treasures only the โlocalsโ or long time visitors get to know. I look forward to meet all of you; to discover new places and people and share the experience with our Karma Scene Magazine readers. So, I hope you enjoy reading us and, like I always sayโฆ weโll see you on the flip side! Help us by telling a friend about us and rememberโฆ โItโs Not Just A Club Thing! โ

TRAVEL & LEISURE
Can you say WOW! Karma had the opportunity to stay in this magnificent Key West Home, with front, back, upstairs & downstairs porches overlooking the beautifully landscaped corner lot and 2700 sq. ft. of privacy. It can be one or two units with 2bd/2baths on both floors and an outside kitchen for summer BBQโs. Inside has been professionally decorated on both floors with full kitchens, granite counter tops, state of the art appliances and the ladies favorite beautiful bathrooms.
The second floor has a very unique addition of a loft with a custom ladder for the kids. Some would say more sleeping room which is furnished with two futons and could totally add to the sleeping space, but I saw it as a kidโs club house โ a fortress for them to escape too! In the evening we were invited out to be shown the town.Wwith the kids being with us, we were not sure if that would be appropriate, but to our delight, the owner of the home introduced us to Sunshine Babysitting Service, a statewide service and is insured to provide childcare for all resorts in the entire state, EVEN THE KEYS, and reasonably priced to boot.
We spent the weekend there and we could not have been more confortable to the point of feeling a certain love loss on the day of our departure. With a lot of reasons to go to the Keys; relaxing, partying, enjoying all the water has to offer, this is definitely another reason to go. If you never left the house I do not think you will be disappointed.
They came to the home, professional and referenced backed. If you are ever in the market check them out. They our located in most cities so, while on vacation, if Mom & Dad want to go for a few hours, here is the website: www.sunshinebabysitting.com. We were lucky enough not to do a full Duval crawl, so the next day we headed over to a gentlemen by the

I remember having a conversation with a friend about the Miami food scene. This guy, who shalll remain nameless, adamently argued that Miami solely offered Latin cuisine (i.e. the standard rice & beans). He could not have been farther from the truth when I explained the plethora of ethnically diverse restaurants, dives, and eateries this magical city holds. It is afterall a quest of mine to unveil all of Miamiโs secret food spots. And so I revealed to him a hip and modern food trend that is taking Miami by storm... Enter, the Food Truck.
I am sure many of you are aware of what a food truck is, all you need to know is in the name, but just to cover my base โ a food truck, mobile kitchen, mobile canteen, or catering truck is a mobile venue that sells food. Fast forward to this afternoon, we were at an awesome event with Food Trucks galore, (Hosted by MercedesBenz of Cutler Bay, FL). All the shiny, bedazzled trucks were lined up in a neat little row, all the better to offer up their tasty treasures to assuage the awaiting crowds. It took about three seconds, two high pitched squeals, and one bite from an arepa pulled pork sandwich to change my friend into a converted fanatic. Afterwards I made my rounds and settled on my top four picks to taste that day: Mr. Good Stuff, Sugar Rush,
FOOD TRUCKS: MIAMI Cruisinโ Gourmet, and Sakaya Kitchen. Mr. Good Stuff Walking around the parking lot at the event, with the unmistakable aroma of fried food in the air, it got quite emotional when having to choose which truck to approach first. They all seemed to beckon with their lovely goodies, but one truck stood out more than the
rest. Mr. Good Stuff caught my eye straight away, with itโs happy creamy yellow exterior and retro feel, and I immediately approached with vigor. The staff were all smiles and friendly advice on what to get and I happily decided on the Sweet Carolina, an arepa (a hearty white cornmeal pancake, also called a Luna) sandwich filled with sweet and tangy BBQ pulled pork, cotija cheese, topped with a refreshing coleslaw, and a spicy chilli sauce. The price was a reasonable $7 and the taste definitely did not dissapoint. The exterior was dense and full of deep sweet corn flavour, and the filling was mouth wateringly sweet. The delicate strings of pork clung to that thick syrupy sauce as well as the roof of my mouth, and the crunchy fresh coleslaw topping was the perfect accoutrement. It was heavenly goodness, and certainly good stuff !

FOOD TRUCKS: MIAMI cont. Sugar Rush After downing the Sweet Carolina, I followed my nose to a truck full of sweet treats. The crowd in front of Sugar Rush was unbelievable, so I knew what they were serving up must be good! Once I got up there my jaw dropped at the unique selections they had; from G.O.A.T. cookies, to mini crรจme brรปlรฉes. I was yearning for something decadent yet light and after an internal debate I settled on the carnival favorite of deep fried oreos. Now, I have made these at home a few times with great success, but Sugar Rush is obviously adept at the craft of deep frying. These choco-spheroid morsels were airy, sweet and crispy on the outside and all fudgey cakey scrumptiousness on the inside. Oh, and did I forget to mention they serve this with a side of condensed milk to dip them in. I cannot express to you how delicious they were. I know, I know, youโve had them elsewhere, and so have I, but you havenโt tried these yet. What can I say? Sugar Rush just knows what theyโre doing. Cruisinโ Gourmet Coming around to the savory side for seconds a fire-engine red truck appeared before me answering my prayers. The Cruisinโ Gourmet, aka The Red Truck, showcases divine Greek cuisine at itโs finest, street-style. I went classic and ordered a lamb gyro, which had tender lamb, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream or Tzatziki sauce (made from strained yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, dill and parsley) all tucked into a soft warm flatbread. Man the wait for this baby was long, about 25 mins worth, but
when they called my name, all was forgotten. It was light and refreshing and deliciously simple. Thereโs something about non-fussy foods that seem to always get the job done. Like easy addition: quality ingredients + talented cooks = great food. Sakaya Kitchen So this was my first time going to a Food Truck Festival, and I did a bit of research beforehand and was dying to taste a japanese-style steamed bun full of meaty goodness. So when I got there ofcourse I was looking everywhere for a truck named Dim Ssam, and to my dismay it was no where to be found. It wasnโt until I curiously walked up to a japanese character covered dark truck dishing out food in intricate boxed containers did two and two come together. Belated happiness ensued and I stared up into the cavernous window to order my Soft-Shell Crab Bao, or Bun. The cook presented this eccentric sandwich with a broad smile on his face, clearly aware of my heightened expectation. I say eccentric because it is served with the entire crab deep-friend and intact, all 8 spindly legs poking out and all. I sunk my teeth down through the soft pillowly surface of the sweet steamed bun to the crunchy soft-shell crab. You would think the texture would be harder but it was beautifully tender and crispy all over. Upon completion I plucked the remaining sweet pickle from the bottom of the container into my mouth with sweet satifaction. It was truly a job well done! All in all, the Festival was a lot of fun, and everything ranged in price from $3-$8. I look forward to following these guys on their road adventures all over Florida, and I think itโs safe to say theyโve gained a new fan! You guys can get more info and follow all of Miamiโs Food Trucks from this one site on facebook !

If you have never ridden, take a safety class. I canโt list them all here but, search motorcycle safety class in South Florida and it will be easy to find one in your area. Maybe we can include that on our site to help you guys out. Baby Steps!
You pay an annual fee and depending on which level of membership you choose you can take out their boats from one of these locations: Fort Lauderdale, Pompano and Captiva Island. The boats range from a 21โ Dual Console to 53โ Sea Ray !. Can you say PARTY! You can check them out at www.fortlaudedaleboatrentals. com and they will send you all the details.
Every day of every week, between the previous categories, you can be in the water, on- or off-road here in South Florida.
Switch gears and go 4x4 baby! Some of the South Floridians are in such groups as The Miami Off Road Club http://www.meetup.com/ The-Miami-Offroad-Club/. As per Wrangler forum.com: JW Corbit in Palm Beach Gardens, The Lakes in Indiantown, Towers in West Palm. I have not been off road since I was in my younger years (watch it) but, if any of you want to go mudding and there is an extra seat email me! The Hillbilly Hellcats are rockabilly purists whoโve been playing music for a long time. They sing about the things that truly matter: Cars, chicks, music and drinkinโ. They independently released 2 full length CDโs โRev it up with Tazโ and โOur Brandโ, both released on their own label, Rockinโ Cat. This is rockabilly, and not some subgenre. No psychobilly, hellbilly, or anything else. There is an undiluted quality to the music The Hillbilly Hellcats play. It swings, boogies and stomps the way the original purveyors of the art form intended it to. The songwriting is memorable, the production crisp, and the sound is pure undistilled reverbed bliss; this is required listening for anyone who likes rockabilly and wants to hear it done right. I caught up with Lance Romance outside of The 321 Local in Cocoa, Florida and discussed the current state of indie touring, the new music economy and rockabilly past and present. Lance Romance: Iโve been playing with Chuck (Hughes) since the 80โs, in cover bands, we were playing rockabilly and after a while we decided we should try to do some original stuff. We got lucky. We recorded both our CDโs with Taz Bentley the original drummer for The Reverend Horton Heat in โ95 & โ98.
THE HILLBILLY HELLCATS Interview with Lance Romance โ by M. Alberto Rivera We toured quite a bit between โ95 and say 2000. Then we couldnโt tour for quite a bit, (due to legal problems), thatโs when I quit and I became a home builder. I was a contractor for a while. Chuck moved out To California for a time. In the meantime the CDโs continued to sell. They were on Amazon, and Itunes and weโve been online since โ98. We were shipping them to Amazon.com regularly. I was shipping 60 to 100 CDโs a month to Amazon. But starting around 2005, that really slowed way down. Now itโs trickle. Now we sell maybe three CDโs a month. The CD has really gone the way of the 8-track. MAR: I was listening to NPR yesterday and they said that 2000 was the year the CD peaked. LR: Its gone way down. Also in the year 2000, we had thought about doing a third CD, but decided not to. Because as soon as our second CD came out in 1998, you could find it on Napster, and there were 100 downloads of our second CD a day. So I understand the whole Metallica argument against Napster, and how it impacted artists. We were always on our own label. We never signed with anyone and we started to see less income. Chuck and I were both in real estate. Real Estate went to hell. Iโm close to
SCENE MAGAZINE
THE HILLBILLY HELLCATS cont. bankruptcy as a result. I may do music as my main source of income, until things turn around. MAR: Why Bass? LR: Iโm actually a banjo player. But when I was 20-21, I couldnโt get a gig with anyone. I was taking guitar lessons with Chuck (Hughes) and I realized had a long way to go to catch up to him. He said to me I got a gig this weekend and I need a bass player.
there were maybe 200 people there, and I thought, that looks pretty cool and you could dance to it. โCuz no one could dance to bluegrass. You either did the clogging dance or you sat down. I thought thatโs kinda boring. I can play always bluegrass when I get older.
I was already familiar with the upright bass. My wife plays bass; she had one I used to mess around with it, so I was familiar with it.
I went down to the music store and figured out how to amplify my bass (stand up bass) and Iโve been playing bass ever since.
Anyone that wants to be a musician, you need to leave it out on the couch and not put it back in the case and you can play for five minutes. Thatโs how you learn to play a new instrument.
MAR: Do you have an original 1950โs rockabilly band?
MAR: Thatโs how Phil Lesh ended up playing bass for the Grateful Dead.
LR: Johnny Burnett and the Rock & Roll Trio. They have the distinction, believe it or not, of kicking Elvis out of the band. I know a lot about rockabilly history. They were playing rockabilly before Elvis was. Elvis had asked to join the band, but when he (Elvis) couldnโt play a B7 chord, they fired him.
LR: Thereโs a lot of bass players, like Paul McCartney, who replaced Stu Sutffcliffe after he died of a brain aneurism. Bass is pretty easy. The slap bass or rockabilly bass, itโs all been done in the 1950โs. It wasnโt until 1960 that they even allowed a drummer on the stage of the Grand Olโ Opry, so the bass player had to be the drummer also. MAR: So what was it about rockabilly that captured your imagination? LR: I saw the Stray Cats in the early 80โs, I saw them in a really small venue like this (The 321 Local), and
Elvis had a hit with โThatโs Alright Mama.โ It was him on Rhythm guitar, Scotty Moore on lead and a bass player. They toured as a trio for a long time like that. He recorded a song called โLetโs Play House.โ Which is the song that inspire Jimmy Page to play guitar. Iโd have to say Elvis and Johnny Burnett and the Rock & Roll Trio are my favorites. Thatโs some of the stuff that inspired Brian Setzer to play also.

THE HILLBILLY HELLCATS cont. MAR: What about current rockabilly acts? LR: Brian Setzer Orchestra and he still plays sometimes with the Stray cats in Europe, but I hear they donโt get along all that well. The Reverend Horton Heat; theyโre the most popular rockabilly, psychobilly acts out there. MAR: I remember the first time I heard them. I just listened in disbelief to this track called โThe Devilโs Chasing Me.โ LR: Psychobilly is really big in Southern California, Thatโs our best market. We were in Europe and we do really well there. The shows were great. Weโd have 200 people come to each show. The European shows are always a lot of fun.
Weโll be playing the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly and Car Show on Easter weekend. Itโs a 4 day rockabilly festival. Jerry Lee Lewis will be headlining. The promoter likes to get the original acts if their still around. Itโs a traditional rockabilly show. He (the promoter) gets 10,000 people to show up. There are great festivals in Europe and in particular in England. MAR: What are the biggest changes youโve seen over the years? LR: A lot of acts that used to sort of snub their audiences and fans or be aloof, are a lot more humble these days. Theyโre more wary about pissing off their fans because of how the industry has changed.

I think I want to strangle you, Mr. Possible Employer
First of all, I will try my very best not to use profane language but I apologize if I canโt control myself and offend anyone.
Apology posted - CHECK. Now here we go. Are all the potential employers out there retarded or they just like fucking with people for the fun of it? I interviewed with this clown a couple months ago. He and his partner own a pretty large electronics distributor in the area, dedicated to commerce within the Latin American region. I was recommended to him by a pretty good recruiter friends of his, which interviewed me for another position but felt my qualifications were the perfect match for these guys. The interview went pretty well. His personality seems to be of him being a man of few words and straight shooter, which I personally like. After about 25 minutes of talking, he tells me that he likes me and that I am the guy they are looking for, but at this time they donโt have any available space in their current location and they are building a brand new, top notch building with a super showroom paid by a manufacturer and blah, blah, blah but it wonโt be ready until August or September. Regardless, he wants to explore the possibility of perhaps having me working from home (I live literally 2 minutes away from his offices) until the new building gets done, but he wants to speak with his partner so they can โbring me on boardโ as he said. He mentions he was going to be out of his office the following week (this was on a Friday) but to call him
the following one to work out the details. I did so, and he told me that he hadnโt had the chance to speak with his partner since they are so extremely busy and short on people for the volume of business they are handling. I reminded him of how much I could help him with his problem if he was to bring me on board right away, and he said โyes, yes... I know. Thatโs why I got to speak with ##### about it. Give me a few more days to do itโ and I told him I would call him the following week to give him plenty of time. When I call the following week, I learn that George is now out of the country for about a week, but he again asks me to follow up with him in a few days. Long story shortโฆ After almost two months, he tells me โIโm so sorry but I think it will be better if we wait for the new building to be completed to bring you in.โ So why the $&%@ are you interviewing (and offering) jobs to people if you donโt have the room to hire them?
Want to hear another one? Here we go. I submit my resume for a position I found online of a cellular phone distributor here in my area. Needless to say this one fits like a glove. Twenty years of experience and all the contacts in the world. About 10 minutes after I press โsendโ I get a phone call. Itโs them. They say โhow soon can you come for an interview?โ and about an hour later we are face to face. The guy interviewing me starts right away saying how impressed he was with my resume and that as soon as he saw it and the companies Iโve worked for he knew
31

beer goggles blog cont. I was the right match. We speak about several people in the industry we commonly know, and he mentions a guy in particular that is a friend of his and I worked with in two different companies for several years. He tells me if I could wait a few minutes because he would like to introduce me to the companyโs owner. A few minutes later, he comes and we spoke for about five minutes or so and he excuses himself by saying โWell, so and so here will handle the details and hurry up and come. I have a warehouse full of stuff for you to sellโ.
So why the $&%@ are you interviewing (and offering) jobs to people if you donโt have the room to hire them?
32
We handle details, agree on salary and other stuff, fill up my paperwork and sign the paperwork for background release and such. The guy tells me that as soon as the background stuff comes back they are ready to tell me when I start. I asked him if it would take probably a few days and he replies โit should be sooner than that.โ Well, I said to my wife โI got a job, babyโ. I havenโt heard from them in two days, so I call to find out whatโs the delay. I know my background check is perfect, because Iโve never been arrested and Iโve passed a really detailed one a few months earlier when Comcast offered me a position as one of their subcontractors. Gosh, I even have a concealed weapon permit. The guy tells me he hasnโt heard back from it, but heโs going to check and call me back. When he does, he
asks me for my wifeโs name, which I gave him. About two hours later he calls me back telling me about the result being ok, but he mentions I had a foreclosure and a previous bankruptcy. I say to him that it is correct, as I am an unfortunate victim of the economy like many other millions of Americans, and he agrees with me on it. In fact, he mentions a condo in Jacksonville, FL he is ready to let go back to the bank. I ask him if he foresees this being an issue for the hire, and he says that he donโt expect it to be and will call me back. Two or three days go by without a call, so I email him and call him in the next day. He is out of the office for a week. When he comes back he emails me back apologizing for the delay but he had to go out of town. He says heโll call me before the end of that week. No call. The following Monday, I email him again asking him for an answer because he told me almost three weeks ago that I was hired and I was eager to start right away. His response about two hours later said that โThe owner had decided to go with someone without experience in the marketโ but he mentions that he would be happy to sell me products so I can sell to my customers and wishes me luck. You know that feeling when you know youโre about to kill someone?
But wait, I have one more for you. After applying to an ad on the internet that was looking for a savvy guy with experience in the Caribbean / Latin American market and has real experience and qualifications, I get a phone call for an interview. The guy I interview with and the company shares the same name, so I know Iโm talking to the right guy. Heโs my age, gives me a brief history on him and the business

beer goggles blog cont. and we proceed to talk about me, my experience and qualifications, and what it would take for me โto come on boardโ financially speaking. After a little bit of hassle from both parts we come to an agreement. He says he will talk to his brother, but it is a formality because he is the one running the business. We also talked about family, personal stuff and a few light jokes. He even shares with me the following day heโs going to have a vasectomy done because the wife doesnโt want any more โoopsโ so heโll be out that day and perhaps even the following one as well, so heโll talk to me on the following Monday. I didnโt hear from him so I called him Tuesday and he apologized for not calling me back. We briefly spoke about his weekend, and he said to me โI will call you tomorrowโ. He doesnโt call and I give him two days, then I call. After he answers, I point blank ask him if heโs ready to move forward because after our conversation I decided to jump on board and therefore stop looking for other jobsโฆ I mean Iโm very politely asking him if heโs ready to shit or get out of the pot because this is bullshit. His answer at this point is pretty original: He says there are three positions heโs got to take care of, and
he has some serious problems with his warehouse, so heโs got to a) fire the guy at the warehouse, b) shuffle some things around and c) fire a guy in the sales floor BUT do it in a way he will then take the vacant warehouse jobโฆ in order to bring me on board. He stresses how touchy the situation is and he is trying to figure out how to โhandle itโ, it will take a while. No commitment on time. Sounds like it could be a week, a month or a year. Can someone tell me what the hell is going on? Does the phrase bring you on board means something different these days, kind of like โaha you been punkโdโ stuff?

EXXXOTICA Expo 2011 in Miami Beach has come and gone. You can enjoy a few of my pictures here in Karma Scene Magazine. Iโll also do a mass upload to flickr at some point. So if youโre a member, and youโve got the โsafe searchโ crap turned off, youโll get a โmoderateโ eyeful. Iโm a photographer, or perhaps Iโm trying to be one; so, a few twists and turns notwithstanding, Iโll try to stick to what I know. In order to keep this from being 17 pages of ramble, Iโm going to do that thing where you end an introductory paragraph with three main Ideas now. When it comes to taking photographs, Exxxotica Miami Beach is like no place else on Earth. The reasons are legal, aesthetic, and technical. Legally, everything inside the Hall C doors and outside of the restrooms is fair game. Simply by attending Exxxotica you are consenting to have your picture taken and that picture can be used commercially willy-nilly all over the internet. If that scares you, get over it. Unless your outfit is showing more than half
your skin, or youโve actually been in enough pornographic movies to be recognized by your fans, nobody really wants a picture of you. However, if youโre there to take pictures, this is the one time anywhere that you can walk up to a provocatively dressed stranger, point a real camera right at her breasts, butt, or maybe even her face, and wonder of miracles, sheโs going to smile and probably even pose for you. Unlike any other time or place, you can then publish, sell, or use that photograph without obtaining a model release, permission, or any other impediment of modern content production. Also, nipples and genitals are covered, so you donโt need to keep documentation of subjectsโ legal age on file in perpetuity pursuant to U.S.C. 2257. (Look it up later.) So anyone with a decent camera and flash setup is going to get pictures that will impress their friends; and probably get them quite a few friend requests if theyโre doing the social media thing. The men, and mostly women, who are there promoting products and performances are (with the exception of Ron Jeremy) some of the most photogenic

SENSUAL PERMISSIVENESS cont. people on earth. Forget whoever or whatever you think is โbeautifulโ or โsexyโ because some other magazine told you so. People who are paid to look good on low-quality, high-definition video, with very little post-production and ZERO Photoshop are frigginโ gorgeous! The amount of digital paint and artistic trickery applied to the Hiltons, Kardashians, Clooneys Annistons and Pitts of the world is immense. Exxxotica manages to be the one place on this planet where almost anybody can take a hot photo without really knowing how to work a camera. The convention hires over a dozen sexy young female go-go dancers who are happy to pose for pictures, because it takes some pressure off the more famous folks who are there to meet their titillated admirers. Amazing-looking creatures of various shapes and sizes are everywhere. Fake-breasts are common, but so are skinny girls with tiny everything. Blondes are not the majority that some would assume, and SuperstarXXX is well over 300 pounds of chocolate lovinโ in a fishnet bodysuit. The convention also took care of the straight women with a male go-go dancer, and the Men of Adonis Strippers. The cameras are everywhere, and thatโs when things get technical. The internet is saturated with opinions, tips, and tricks that will help you take amazing photographs in all sorts of
real-world conditions. There are also very helpful articles about how to take portraits and fancy them up real professional-like using that dadgum Photoshop program. Exxxotica is not a realworld situation, and youโre going to end up taking way more pictures than anyone would actually sit and edit to modern standards of amateur retouching. So the geeks with DSLRs are out in force. Theyโve got all sorts of exotic lenses and weird flash brackets attached to their cameras. Theyโre mostly using whatever some wedding photographer or Paparazzo told them works. I myself was carrying a Canon EOS 1Ds with an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM telephoto zoom lens, a 550ex flash, and an external battery pack which allows the flash to recycle faster. My rig weighed about eight pounds. Multiply that by the 1400+ shots I took, add the hundreds of times I hoisted that heavy bastard to my eye without taking a shot, throw in the 10 pound backpack with another DSLR, two more lenses, two more flashes. Iโm actually pretty strong for a long skinny dork. Not once did I really question whether my equipment was overkill. I saw one dude with a three-flash/two video light setup on a bracket attached to a camera and lens that cost less than the assembled accessories. His rig actually made sense to me. Fully half of the shutterbugs at the convention were carrying things that made no sense at all. If you still have the royal wedding on your DVR, go to the part where William and Kate leave the church and slow-motion the adjacent shot

SENSUAL PERMISSIVENESS cont. where they show all of the photographers across the street from Westminster Abbey. To the untrained eye this type of paparazzi is approximately what gathers every few minutes when something sexy happens at Exxxotica. If you know cameras and lenses, you notice that everybody at Exxxotica is using a different setup. Whereas the big lenses on that London street are all about the same.
Exxxotica is, therefore, an unregulated smorgasbord of beauty, celebrity, wanton sexual presentation and a paradise for geeks. Itโs not exciting per se, but it will hold your attention for hours. Girls will talk to you if theyโre not too busy messaging their friends. Basically, itโs the live version of the internet. There are so many videos and banner ads that they blur into the background. Thereโs even groups of people who arenโt
paying for booths who schlep around with body-painted hotties passing out fliers. They are human pop-up windows. Sex sells, and always will. Geeks buy gadgets and need a place where they can try them out without getting beat up by boyfriends. Women actually like sex, and at Exxxotica, some of them do things that would get men a week on the couch. Mostly, Exxxotica is a meet and greet for pornstars and their fans. The show is a chance to walk around and see things that normally only exist as pages on the Internet. You can see people who are beautiful without retouching, women that actually smile at total nerds and enjoy talking about sex. Youโll need to wait until next May if you want to attend Exxxotica Miami Beach, but they have conventions in New Jersey and California later this summer. Feel free to take pictures, or let us geeks handle that; weโve got gadgets. Elmo Love, PhotoGeek Elmo Love attends all sorts of events around South Florida. He doesnโt mind if you want to have your picture taken, and heโll send you a copy via email free of charge. Donโt hesitate to interrupt him when heโs doing โhis art thingโ in some dark corner behind a long heavy lens. Heโs actually quite friendly, and usually has an original thought to share.
