Closer To Love Karolin Ott

Closer To Love Karolin Ott Karolin is a London-based Estonian artist, working primarily with paint, but with her first solo exhibition in London, she uses sculpture as an extension to her goal in presenting what she feels it is like for her as a young woman, struggling between different divided roles, and developing her professionalism.

‘As a student I was in a safe environment dreaming about

becoming an artist whose only job was to be a professional artist. But after graduation, that did not happen. Why? Because I had to get a job, to earn money, and make this happen. But there was never enough money and what was even worse - there was not enough time anymore. And there I was, standing in my room and looking at things around me. These things told me how I spent my time on different roles - office worker, housewife, traveller, sexy girlfriend - instead of concentrating on a role that I missed the most. A year later I am closer to my true love - art. And things around me are more the way I like‌’ - Karolin

Artist Bio Karolin Ott is a London based artist, born in Tartu, Estonia, in 1989. She graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2011 with a BA in painting. During university, her works mainly concentrated on mixing painting with video, sculpture or computer programming. Her early paintings were never made on traditional canvas, but instead were produced on MDF. This was in order to cut them (with a jig saw) and diversify the possibilities to use them as 2D sculptures in her room installations. In 2009 – 2010 Karolin was an exchange student in Portugal’s Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, where her works became more colourful. In 2009 Karolin was awarded the Margaret Kevend scholarship. The following year Karolin’s first solo exhibition “Rosto de Portugal” was held in Lisbon’s Fabrica Features Lisboa. Throughout 2011-2012, Karolin was living in Singapore, where she worked as a T-shirt designer and freelance artist, starting to prepare her next exhibition. In the following year solo exhibition “Back To Love” brought her back to painting as a base medium. Also, contrary to her previous artist statement of denying the use of traditional rectangle canvas, all of her works were now made this way. In March 2014 Karolin works were exhibited in Helsinki group show entitled “Olohuonenäyttley” and in June she was a part of a joint Estonian art show exhibiting work for the Gabo Manchano Gallery. The concept was entitled This Is What I Am, shown in Clerkenwell, London, UK. The main focus of Karolin’s latest works is on the inner conflict of an individual, causing division within herself between different social roles, while following her biggest dreams. http://www.carxa.net/
