THE TASK WAS TO DESIGN A MODULAR AND COMPLETELY DEMOUNTABLE STUDENT RESIDENCE BUILDING IN THE CAMPUS OF MINHO UNIVERSITY IN GUIMARAES. DURING THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT I TRIED TO FOCUS ON WHAT KIND OF SPACES AND NEW TYPOLOGICAL ELEMENTS WE CAN OBTAIN BY JOINNING SEVERAL MODULES IN DIFFERENT WAYS INSTEAD OF FOCUSSING ON THE QUALITY OF ONLY ONE MODULAR PART.

EACH MODULE OF THE BUILDING CONSISTS OUT OF TWO LEVELS, HAVING AN L-SHAPED FORM IN THE SECTION VIEW. THE TOP MODULES ARE A MIRROR OF THE ONES IN THE BOTTOM. THIS WAY IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THEM FORMING A HORIZONTAL CORRIDOR IN THE MIDDLE AS SHOWN IN THE SCHEME ON THE RIGHT.

IF A TOP OR BOTTOM MODULE IS REMOVED, AN OPEN-AIR SPACE IS FORMED WHICH CAN BE ACCESSED FROM THE MODULES NEXT TO IT OR FORM ONE COMMON SPACE.

THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO MEET TOP LEVEL EUROPEAN SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS. ALL THE MATERIALS USED IN THE PROJECT ARE FULLY DEMOUNTABLE AND MODULAR, ALLOWING THE TRANSPORTATION OF THE BUILDING AND REUSE OF MATERIALS.

THE HOUSE TYPOLOGY IN A NOVEL SUBTLE WAY

TWO HOUSES COMBINED INTO ONE WHOLE WAS THE INITIAL IDEA OF VILLA MERGER. BY KEEPING THE FRONT SIDE PRIVATE, WE WERE ABLE TO OPEN UP THE FACADE FACING THE GARDEN. THUS, PROMOTING THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE GREEN LANDSCAPE.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, ARCHITECTURAL DETAILLING

FROM 2011/06/02 TO 2011/08/31 I WAS DOING A SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT ODBC ARCHITECTS OFFICE IN PARIS. DURING THAT TIME I WORKED ON THREE DIFFERENT PROJECTS. HERE I PRESENT THE ONE THAT I SPENT THE MOST TIME ON.

THE DESIGNED FLOATING TOURISM INFORMATION CENTER INCLUDES OFFICES, A CONFERENCE SPACE, TECHNICAL ROOMS AND A RECEPTION AREA. THE BUILDING REPRESENTS A VORTEX WITH THE MEETING ROOM AS IT’S “DIAMOND”, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE BUILDING. THE EXTERIOR COVERING IS DESIGNED FROM INTERSECTING WOODEN UNITS, COVERED BY A SEMI-TRANSPARENT ETFE MEMBRANE, WHICH EXPOSES THE BUILDING’S “SKELETON” DURING THE NIGHT.

DURING MY SECOND SEMESTER OF MASTER STUDIES IN THE DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY I PARTICIPATED IN THE COMPLEX PROJECTS STUDIO FOR THE VERTICAL CITIES ASIA COMPETITION HELD EACH YEAR BY THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE (NUS) AND SPONSORED BY THE WORLD FUTURE FOUNDATION (WFF) AND BEIJING VANTONE CITYLOGIC INVESTMENT CORPORATION.

EVERY YEAR A ONE SQUARE KILOMETER TERRITORY HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF THE COMPETITION. THIS AREA HAS TO HOUSE 100,000 PEOPLE LIVING AND WORKING. THIS SETS THE STAGE FOR TREMENDOUS RESEARCH AND INVESTIGATION INTO URBAN DENSITY, VERTICALITY, DOMESTICITY, WORK, FOOD, INFRASTRUCTURE, NATURE ECOLOGY, STRUCTURE AND PROGRAM - THEIR HOLISTIC INTEGRATION AND THE QUEST FOR VISIONARY PARADIGM ARE THE CHALLENGES OF THIS URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL INVENTION. THIS NEW ENVIRONMENT WILL BE A FULL SLATE OF LIVE-WORK-PLAY PROVISIONS, WITH THE RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT MAKING UP TO 50% OF THE TOTAL FLOOR SPACE. IN 2014, IN THE FOURTH OF THIS SERIES COMPETITIONS, THE SITE WAS HELD IN MUMBAI, INDIA WITH THE THEME “EVERYONE CONNECTS”.

OUR CONCEPT FOR THE COMPETITION WAS BASED ON EMBRACING THE EXISTING QUALITIES OF MUMBAI WHICH WE FOUND DURING OUR SITE VISIT (LIVELY STREET LIFE, COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES AROUND THEM, PUBLIC LIFE, DIVERSITY) WHILE FIXING THE HARD INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED FOR IT TO FUNCTION AS A METROPOLITAN CITY. DURING THE DESIGN WE TRIED TO IMPLEMENT THESE SOFT INFRASTRUCTURAL ACTIVITIES INTO OUR HARD INFRASTRUCTURAL INTERVENTIONS THROUGH OUR 4 FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES .

THE CURRENT LOOSE FABRIC OF THE SITE AND CONTOUR PROMOTED A DISCONTINUOUS NETWORK. OUR PROPOSAL ENCOMPASSES A NETWORK THAT COMPLETES THE STREET GRID, HIERARCHY AND BREAKS DOWN BLOCKS, NEIGHBOURHOODS AND CLUSTERS IN SUCH A FASHION THAT PERMEABILITY AND WALKABILITY IS INTRODUCED WITHIN THE SITE.

PROPOSED EXISTING

CURRENT SCENARIO LOOKS TOWARDS THE WESTERN SIDE OF MUMBAI AND HENCE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT STOPS AND CIRCUITS ARE MORE TOWARDS THAT FRONT.

WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE STREET NETWORK AND OPENING OF THE EASTERN WATERFRONT ONE CAN DEVELOP A WHOLESOME PUBLIC TRANSPORT NETWORK WHICH CONNECTS ALL MODES OF TRANSPORT AND SHARES STOPS. ALSO PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS DONE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE ROUTING DOES NOT BURDEN ONLY FEW ROADS BUT IS SPREAD EVENLY.

PROGRAM INFLUENCES STREET IN EXISTING FABRIC

THE MAIN STREET ACCOMMODATES LARGER FUNCTIONS AND PROGRAM WHICH FACILITATES THE GENERAL POPULATION IN COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY.

THUS, MAIN PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINES RUN THROUGH THESE ROADS WHICH BRANCH INTO SECONDARY ROADS.

SECONDARY STREETS FORM A LINK BETWEEN CITY ROADS WHICH RUN THROUGH THE SITE TO THE NEIGHBOURHOODS WITHIN IT.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS ROUTED WITH THIS BRANCH AS WELL BUT THE FREQUENCY REDUCES, THUS CONTAINING NEIGHBOURHOOD BASED COMMERCE, AMENITIES AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC.

THESE STREETS BRANCH FROM THE MAIN SITE ROADS BREAKING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND BLOCKS INTO SMALLER COMMUNITIES AND INCREASE WALKABILITY THROUGH PERMEABILITY.

THE GROUND FLOOR IS STILL ACTIVE ON THESE ROADS AND HAVE COMMERCIAL FUNCTIONS WHICH REQUIRES A PERSON TO STAY LONGER LIKE COMMUNITY SERVICE AS BARBERS OR SMALLER COMMERCE FOR DAILY LIFE, AND EVEN SMALL PRODUCTION BASED ON FAMILY UNIT.

THE PROGRAM HERE THOUGH IS MAINLY RESIDENTIAL. SMALL PRODUCTION IS BASED ON FAMILY UNIT.

IT FACILITATES DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANSPORT COMING FROM BOTH CITIES WHICH MAKE THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF MUMBAI.

WITHIN THE RING THERE ARE STOPS AS PER THE DIFFERENT ANCHOR POINTS ON THE WATER FRONT.

EVERY STOP IS ALTERNATIVE WITH OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORT STOPS AS WELL TO INCREASE PERMEABILITY WITHIN THE SITE AND THE TWO CITIES.

THE SHAPE IS ALSO USED TO LEVEL WITH THE DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANSPORT AND THEIR STOPS USING THE CIRCULAR SLOPE TO CHANGE HEIGHTS.

THE RING IS LAYERED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT ACCOMODATES NOT ONLY THE TRANSPORTATIONAL INFRATRUCTURE BUT ALSO IS A CONTINUUM OF THE STREET LIFE AND ACTIVITIES.

THE CAFE INTERIOR LOCATED IN STORTORGET - THE OLDEST SQUARE IN STOKHOLM USES A LOT OF NATURAL ELEMENTS LIKE BAMBOO, WOOD, MOSS AND PLANTS.

TOGETHER WITH ASIAN MOTIVES IN DETAILING THEY ARE USED TO FORM A UNITY WHERE THERE IS NO BOUNDARY BETWEEN WHAT IS ALIVE AND ARTIFICIAL.

THE RESTAURANT SHOWN IS LOCATED IN SUNDBYBERG, A SUBURB TO STOKHOLM. THE GOAL WAS TO ACHIEVE A FEELING OF LIGHTNESS AND JUXTAPOSITION OF THE NEW STRUCTURE CREATED USING A GOLDEN MESH TO THE EXISTING FLOOR MOSAIC AND THE LARGE TILES IN THE BAR AREA. THE NEW FABRIC IS NOT THE SAME AS THE OLD BUT BEHAVES ON ITS OWN - A BUILDING WITHIN A BUILDING. IT HELPS TO DIVIDE THE SPACE MAKING MORE PRIVATE AREAS.

THE RESTAURANT IN THE IMAGES IS LOCATED IN THE SWEDISH TOWN OF NORRKOPING. TWO VARIATIONS OF THE PROJECT ARE PRESENTED. THE CLIENT’S REQUEST WAS TO HAVE A TRADITIONAL ASIAN FEEL WITH THE USE OF WARM WOOD AND METALS AFFECTED BY NATURAL PROCESSES LIKE CORROSION.

THE LARGE TWO-LEVEL ATTIC APARTMENT IS LOCATED IN ŽVĖRYNAS DISTRICT IN VILNIUS. THE UNIQUE WINDOW LAYOUT ALLOWS TO FILL EVEN THE FAR SPACES WITH LIGHT WHICH IS USED TO CREATE INTERESTING CONFIGURATIONS LIKE THE MASTER BEDROOM MERGED TOGETHER WITH THE SHOWER AND DRESSING AREA. MIRROR SURFACES, GLASS AND HANGING ELEMENTS ARE USED TO AVOID OBSTRUCTIONS AND ACHIEVE A VISUALLY CONTINUOUS SPACE.

THE APARTMENT LAYOUT ALLOWED TO THINK OF NEW TYPES OF USAGE FOR SPACE LIKE THE WINE CELLAR WITH A DEGUSTATION AREA IN CONNECTION TO THE LIVING ROOM WHICH CAN ALSO BECOME A PRIVATE SPACE WITH THE USE OF CURTAINS. WARM WOODEN TEXTURES ARE USED TO GIVE THE SENSE OF COSINESS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP WHICH GOES INTO PRODUCING THE BEVERAGES TO BE SAVOURED HERE.

THE PRIVATE HOUSE SHOWN IN THE IMAGES IS LOCATED IN VILNIUS AND PROVIDED WITH INTERESTING OPPORTUNITIES. THE GARAGE LOCATED ON THE FIRST LEVEL IS A SHOWROOM WHICH EXPOSES THE AUTOMOTIVE COLLECTION OF THE OWNER. ITS VISUAL CONNECTION WITH THE SWIMMING POOL AND TERRACE CREATES AN INTERESTING AMBIENT SPACE WHICH GIVES A TRANSCENDENTAL FEELING DURING THE NIGHT. ROUGH NATURAL STONE MATERIALS WERE USED WHICH EXPOSE THEIR VIVID TEXTURE WITH THE HELP OF SUBTLE LIGHTING.
