FOREWORD This portfolio presents the most representative projects undertaken in the last five years. It was a productive period, first because of the professional experience and second because of having the chance to collaborate with numerous people from around the world. During this, my creation process moved towards projects in which innovative building techniques are used as a tool to obtain sustainable, ecological spaces and to enhance performance oriented architecture. This book is organized into tree chapters. The first contains a selection of completed and under-construction buildings. The second presents a compilation of projects carried out as a staff architect in various phases of design. The final chapter illustrates three competitions as an individual architect working with different collaborators and I also want to bring foreword the creation process and how ideas emerged. Each project was a unique challenge and is the work of one person, but it represents the effort of many. I would like to thank WESTFOURTH ARCHITECTURE for providing an exceptional work and research environment. I am particularly grateful to Vladimir Arsene, president of W4, for his constant support and sage advice throughout the entire process.. Finally, I want to thank my colleagues and friends for their continued support.

At 25 stories and 110 m, the BTC tower, is presently the tallest building in Romania.
In spite of its size, the tower does not benefit from either a large site or a surrounding plaza. The relatively small 2,500 sq m site is set on Ion Mihalache Boulevard, next to the Filantropiei Hospital and close to Piata Victoriei. The tower, while situated in the second plane of reference, behind Piata Victoriei, constitutes a dead-end perspective point for the Lascar Catargiu Boulevard, revealing most of its height from Piata Romana. An illusory presence, the tower seems to diminish behind the Antipa Museum, as one approaches Piata Victoriei, along the boulevard. Transcending its impact on the immediate neighborhood to the larger vistas of the city, the tower establishes an urban role for this much challenged typology in Bucharest.

core in the building. The core is set on the southern wall leaving the northern exposure available for most of the building. The transition from south to north along the façade is marked by the reduction of the ceramic frit density in the silk screening of the curtain wall, changing the tower's transparency towards north. The core mass that remains exposed on the south façade is clad with dark corrugated metal panels. The tower sets back above the four-level «base» containing larger office floors. This register reflects the height of the existing buildings along the boulevard. The base's top two levels are cantilevered over the building entry, revealing the lobby doors, set in the circular body of the tower at its contact with the ground. Above, another cantilevered volume parallels the «base» and separates the tower into lower and upper sections. The «base» is clad with alternating dark and clear glass panels. The horizontal dark glass strips that mark the office zones in the glazed areas correspond to one-meter width bands of tinted vision glass, set at eye level. The vision-glass panels above and below these strips are silk-screened. Within the floors' structure, these panels have a ceramic coverage between 30 to 50%. The slab structure and dropped ceiling areas are covered by «shadow-boxes», having the outer glass layer patterned in the same way as the vision-glass.

Site plan

The 15-story office building is located at the intersection of Dr. Felix Street and Titulescu Drive, diagonally across from America House. The site and the required setbacks determined the smallest office plate configuration (500-550 sq m) to date, in all Westfourth's high-rise projects. Above the third floor, the building's volume is split into two wings, one facing the street and the other facing the boulevard. This configuration, together with the different facade rendition for each component, enhances the building's verticality and marks the urban intersection.

The building is clad in timber - one of the oldest and most sustainable building materials. In Romania, building in timber is particularly appropriate in that it follows indigenous architectural traditions. The larch shingles will respond naturally to exposure to the elements, changing colour slowly over time to a silver-grey, and will last for a hundred years without the need for maintenance. Furthermore, timber is a renewable resource; the trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow; felling older trees reinforces the foresting practice of harvesting to encourage regeneration; and by using locally cut timber, little energy is consumed in its transportation. The building consists of six storeys of apartments and an underground level for car parking, plant and storage. The site is spectacularly located on the edge of a slope, looking down over valley towards the Poiana Brasov resort. Responding to this location and to local weather patterns, the buildings allows windows and balconies on the southern side to open up to the sunlight and panoramic views, while the colder, north facade is more closed, punctuated with deep window openings.

swimming pool Aerial view towards the outdoor pool area The pool is part of the hotel facilities and it was one of the first design that I coauthored at Westfourth Architecture. A key objective of the building was to compliment the surrounding landscape, including an adjacent golf course, in terms of building volume, expression and materials. Wood played a key role tackling this objective and was utilized in the roof construction of the hotel and swimming pool, and throughout the main common spaces. Large overhanging glulam roof elements soften the edges of the building and offer a visual attraction both inside and outside the centre. In addition to wood’s strength and natural beauty, its thermal properties made it easier to extend the structure through the building envelope to form large roof overhangs

The 135 m high building is Located in the center of Bucharest adjacent to Piata Victoriei Square. The typical tower configuration of central core with perimeter office zones evolves, in the design for Buzesti tower, towards a rectangular plan made up of three linear ‘slices’ each slipped in relation to each other. The central slice carries the core, while the outer two slices accommodate office space. The resulting plan generates the three dimensional form, expressed in elevation as three vertical bays. another feature of the building is the automated parking which run through the tower from the fifth basement to the fifth office floor. The central core rises to the highest point with the flanking elements stepping down on each side. The building will be clad in a number of external wall systems, including glazing that will incorporate various thermal and solar coatings to respond to the environmental conditions on each facade of the building. At high level, the screens around the plant areas take on the same appearance as the main facade, but will become lighter through the use of louvres that also provide the required free area for ventilation. The landscape incorporates a series of pedestrian links which enable access to the podium.

context The lachplesa development is conceived to form the urban counterpoint between the historic center (listed by unesco) and adjacent historic storage building complex. The development is located in the central part of Riga, between Lachplesha, Birzanieka-Upisha and Visvalzaha streets. The basic basic structure and the clear urban relationship of future quarter to the adjacent old city center are robust enough to accommodate changes in urban planing paradigms, irregular economic growth cycle, or newly surfacing constraints that may alter the character of the individual quarters while not comprising the urban design of the whole district.

Lakplesa Development - Master Plan

buildings projects competitions program We propose a high quality mixed use development, including residential apartments, retail space, office space, a hotel and 1,800 underground parking spaces. The site has a unique identifying mark called the Chimney- a former factory chimney listed by the Riga municipality as a historical monument, which will act as the focal point for the development. At the heart of the project is an internal courtyard that leads into a planned pedestrian shopping street with coffee

Canion is located in Voluntary/Pipera in the affluetial northern neighborhoods of Bucharest comprising of residential condos, business park, a hotel and shoping mall. the site located adjacent to a lake and will include docks for private use of residents and the tenants of the business park. The surrounding area is rapidly developing as one of the most important expansion areas of Bucharest. Our design embraces both the natural landscape of the site and contemporary urbanism, generating a new, 21st-century image for Canyon Pipera. The new buildings complements the existing character of the city and takes advantage of the lushness of the surrounding

Rising to 180 meters , our proposed addition to the Bucharest skyline sits at the edge of historic center and will represent a distinctive presence but it will also be anchored into the lower-scale city fabric, with restoration and sensitive rebuilding of the perimeter structures reinforcing the original scale of the block. These developments at street level will provide shops, carparking, apartments and a banking hall, and will forge links between the Torre Berzei and the broader community. The main structural element is the concrete core in the centre of the building. The facade of the tower is a combination of glass and vertical stainless steel fins. These fins act as energy efficient sunscreen at the same time captures and reflect the shimmering and colors of Bucharest’s light.

At 27 stories and 120 m, the Craiova tower, will represent the tallest building in Craiova city.
The building ,clad completely in glass , rejects the classical architectural standard of base ,shaft , and capital in favour for singular, scluptural tower. Enveloping this continuous form the building s facade offers a shifting, geometric modulation of vertical and triangular surfaces, taillord in part to maximize views over cities center .The glass skin of the skyscraper , and its 27 floors, are supported structurally by central core, freeing up the surface of the building to express a striking silhouette.

This building houses the headquarters of ''Casa Noastra'', a major glass company and is located in one of the most emerging areas of Craiova city. The result is an elliptic building that efficiently accommodates office functions on plates hinged on a central core. The ground floor is set back and align to a different geometry. This allows the remainder of the building to cantilever above and below these levels and sets the dynamic of the building's perception from the street. the elliptical upper volume of the building has a curtain wall facade fitted with vertical ceramic frit patterned glass louvers witch encompasses a wide array of shades, as a remainder of company profile. The interior core, the concrete walls are power-washed to reveal the aggregates within. This stands in contrast with the finish of the lobby floor, an alternation of smooth and matte granite slabs.

The swimming pool is the centerpiece of the Aquatic Center. The building is organized like a continuous loop with one crossing points. The loop houses the various programmatic elements and the complimentary program. The design is based on generating the maximum interaction between building

and public construction. The three principal programmatic elements: technology, sports and leisure are translated into a mix of complementary programs catering to a large and diverse audience. Through the integration of carefully assembled programs into one coherent building organization, an

The brief is for a new home for musicians and composers copyright union. It's an office building, about 1000 sm with a auditorium in the basement. The main feature of the design is the facades made up of vertical fins. These fins twist and change shape as they move up and along the facade. This creates a wave like effect as you walk by the building.

An international competition was organised for the design of the Green 360.

The

project Green 360 is a new real estate concept, created as an alternative to the typical apartment buildings, at one of the most privileged sceneries in Lima (Peruvian Capital), at the mountains of the Camacho urbanization, by the Golf Course Los Inkas, in the district of Santiago de Surco. The project consists in developing two tower models, tower A (typical) and tower B (corner), emplacing the A towers on the plots 02, 03, 05, 06, 07 and 08; as well as the B towers shall be emplaced on the plots 01 and 04. for the lofts at green 360 we propose a building that literally grows out of the ground. We use the same logic that trees do, to create an exterior structural shell that supports the building. The apartments become nests within this structure, giving their owners the feeling of a safe haven while creating beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The process of creating the tree like facades was developed using the Lindemayer System algorithm which is used to mimic plant

patterns. This type of algorithm was usefull because of the amount of parameters we could adjust. We controlled the number of branches, their length, the angle between them, and the way they sprouted. You can see the control

competitions

life and is also the basis of many fractal

we had in an earlier video I posted. In that example the only variable that changed was

105

the angle between branches.
