O

ften criticized beforehand, the lowering of the age introduced at the beginning of the year by the CIK-FIA has proved quite positive in the international categories. The OK category largely benefited from this measure with very large entries, while the OK-Juniors maintained an excellent level of participation. The Rookies have regularly rocked the established hierarchy ahead of many experienced drivers. The KZ category raised questions with reduced entries, while KZ2 scored well.

T

he European Championships were uncertain for a long time, except in KZ where Paolo De Conto (CRG / TM) has quickly established himself. Titled in OK-Junior, Jonny Edgar (Exprit / TM) was one of the revelations of the year, while Sami Taoufik (FA Kart / Vortex) was assured in OK. The KZ2 verdict was disrupted by events before the crowning of Leon Köhler (Tony Kart / Vortex). Paolo De Conto won again in an exciting KZ World Cup while Alex Irlando (Sodi / TM) ignited the KZ2 International Super Cup. At PF International, the World Championships brought big surprises as a result of a confusing Qualifying due to the alternation of Vega and LeCont tyres. The final result probably did not reflect the real competitiveness of the 2017 protagonists. Danny Keirle (Zanardi / Parilla) was ahead of the best OK drivers, while Dexter Patterson (Exprit / TM) was ahead of Harry Thompson (FA Kart) /Vortex). The British approach to racing has often been rewarded.

On the mechanical side, 2017 was a great year for TM Racing whose dominance in KZ and KZ2 left the competition far behind. The engines prepared directly by the Italian factory clearly outpaced those of other tuners, which is not always a good thing for racing. TM Racing also had great success in OK-Junior via its tuner GFR. Vortex was well represented in the other categories, and IAME shone in OK. The chassis from the OTK group, under five different brands, still occupied a large part of the grid in front of CRG and Zanardi, who nevertheless had many successes, Birel ART was present in KZ / KZ2, while Sodikart made a remarkable breakthrough on the international market. The big factory teams were not always on the pace against the best private teams where British dominance has increased. The European meeting at Oviedo was very controversial because of the unsuitable layout of the circuit Fernando Alonso,

EDITORIAL

KARTCOM NEWS #38 tough for chassis and drivers. The detachable spoilers have continued to bring more calmness to the start of the race, but it is undeniable that they also contribute to obstruction strategies by limiting overtaking, which is detrimental to the interest of the competitions. The CIK-FIA is not announcing any major regulatory changes for 2018. The next stage of the definition of the Mini category looms for 2019 and 2021. The choice of Felipe Massa as successor to Sheikh Abdulla Isa bin Al Khalifa could be a nice surprise. New in 2018, RGMMC replaces WSK Promotion as the promoter of CIKFIA competitions, a difficult task for the next three years after the quality of the work of Luca De Donno's team. Kartcom News wishes a happy holiday season to its many faithful readers around the world and will return in February with the resumption of racing.

SONIC A FINAL RACE FULL

OF PROMISES FOR 2018 The traditional end-of-year rendezvous in the South of France, the Claude Secq Trophy on 18th and 19th November 2017 gathered a very interesting field at the circuit of Brignoles. Sonic Racing was well represented with no less than 13 drivers entered under the colours of Sébastien Caranta's team. A double podium in Minime for Kimi Durosne and Jules Caranta, a 3rd place in Cadet for the debut of Mathys Cappuccio, the success of the Rousseau-Ricci brothers in National and the excellent performances of Antony Dugué in X30 Senior were the highlights of the weekend for the team from Saint-Tropez.

A

lthough it was cool in the morning at Brignoles, the sun quickly raised the temperatures during the day during a most enjoyable meeting. Jules Caranta was in pole position in Minime, but lost his advantage because of a lost chain guard in the Prefinal. Meanwhile, Kimi Durosne made a splash with his

7

RPM engine, moving up from 18th to 5th in the Prefinal before finishing a superb weekend in 2nd place in the Final. Jules secured a brilliant Final, finishing 4th at the checkered flag, which turned into a 3rd position after a penalty. Meanwhile, Nathan Stupnicki and Ethan Launais enriched their experience with the team. Mathys Cappuccio did not miss out in his debut in Cadet in advance of next season. His 3rd Final position opens up good prospects for 2018. Paul Trojani and Wicken Teneketzian also raced with Sonic Racing Kart in this category and took advantage of this latest event to refine their future strategy. Alexandre Rousseau-Ricci has consiolidated his excellent progress of the year by winning the National category after a very solid weekend. His younger brother Florian was not outdone for his first race in National. Already very fast in Cadet, he did not take long to master this new context. He made a superb recovery in the Final up to the 7th position, having had a sparkplug problem in the Prefinal. They are undeniably two drivers to follow next season. In X30 Senior, Sonic was pleased to welcome three drivers back to enjoy karting alongside their career in car racing. Sébastien Chardonnet, Davide Farhi and

Gaëtan Loncle led the event throughout the weekend. The best performances were, however, to the credit of Antony Dugué, who has made beautiful progress this year. He was on the attack in 6th position in the Final before going off the track. The final word went to the boss, Sébastien Caranta: "The season is about to end on a very positive note. We are proud to have accompanied great progress and our efforts will continue in 2018 with many moves to higher categories, especially for the Minimes. Our engine hire business has experienced a good development phase under the RPM label and we thank all our customers

for their loyalty. The Sonic Racing Kart programme for next season is not yet fully completed, but the year looks very promising for many of our drivers."

NEW KALI-KART RANGE BY

For the historic brand manufactured by CRG, the main innovations concern the new model for non-gearbox categories(KK 03) which will support the famous KK 02.

T

he Kalì-Kart brand illuminates the history of karting by recalling the successes of Michael Schumacher and Alex Zanardi in the 90s. But Kalì Kart is also a great commercial success especially in the important markets of Germany and Northern Europe.

For 2018, the CRG factory , which produces and markets the Kalì-Kart, has decided to strengthen Kalì-Kart's range and international programme. The new KK 03 for direct-drive categories has just been launched for the 2018-2020 homologation period with a new design of its 30 mm tubing. The KK 02 continues its career without change, while the KK 04 has been slightly updated in terms of braking and bodywork. A technical change in the centre of gravity also gives it a better efficiency with KZ tyre. Find the technical specifications on

IP KARTING

CLOSES THE 2017 INTERNATIONAL SEASON BEAUTIFULLY The second part of the 2017 sporting year brought great satisfaction for the IP Karting drivers. The most convincing result went to Kevin Breysse and his Formula K chassis at the IAME International Final. At the Le Mans circuit, Breysse animated the X30 Super top category during the world meeting before concluding with a superb 2nd place against the top specialists.

M

ore recently, the biggest race of the year was held in Las Vegas with more than 500 drivers. Jérémy Iglesias was one of the protagonists in KZ at the wheel of his Formula K. After taking pole position, he dominated the Qualifying Heats before finishing 2nd in the Final. Two other podiums rewarded IP Karting performances for Gary Carlton in S1 and Christian Miles in Mini Swift, both also on Formula K.

At the same time, the Adria circuit hosted the WSK Final Cup. Francesco Pulito (IP Karting) was on the podium of the first round in the strong 60 Mini category with 83 participants. Everywhere in the world, IP Karting chassis prove their intense competitiveness at the highest level. The Action Karting team is proud to distribute the Formula K, Praga and OK1 brands, whose recognized quality brings complete satisfaction to their users. FELIX WARGÉ ROTAX GRAND FINAL 2017 :

VICTORY WAS AT HAND 13

KARTCOM NEWS #38

For his third consecutive participation in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, the Belgian Felix Wargé had never been so close to his goal. After an event free from pitfalls at Portimao, the Tys Racing Team driver had everything he needed to win in the Senior Max Final. The fight during the last laps between the leading trio allowed him to take 2nd place, a magnificent result, although one which caused some disappointment in his camp.

"f

elix was probably the strongest this year,” commented Philippe Kinard, Tys Racing's boss. "His talent is now fully mature. His perfect knowledge of the category, the track and the Sodi chassis used in Senior Max enabled us to refine the setup over the races and we were at our peak for the Final. The performances were very close this year between the protagonists and there was nothing between them in the race. It would have been enough if there was a better understanding between the pursuers to attack the leader who showed a formidable ability to resist. We felt great disappointment at the time, but in retrospect Felix’s overall performance was simply outstanding. I am

proud to have worked with him for six years in this decisive phase of his career. I think we have done a great job together and I want to be able to continue this momentum with new young talents." 26th in 2015 at Portimao, 4th in 2016 at Sarno, Felix Wargé continued his climb to the world level this year on his return to the Rotax Grand Final in Portugal. 14th fastest in Qualifying, he won two of his three heats and on Thursday night was in 3rd place, tied with 2nd. The fight intensified in the Prefinal, but Felix managed to take the advantage after being demoted to 5th place briefly. In the Final, he first faced Brett Ward and took control several times. Jean Nomblot came to join the fight, while Ward consolidated his lead. Felix recovered 2nd place in a daring move from the outside, but he was too late to threaten the leader. In any case, both Felix Wargé and the Tys Racing Team are leaving this long-term adventure in the world of Rotax Max. A success that should logically bring them new opportunities in their respective fields. Contact Tys Racing Team: +32 472 948 444 info@tysdesign.be Facebook Tys Racing Team

he explanations from the coordinator of the series, Stefan Wagner, are: "We have considered the requests that were sent to us after the publication of the 2018 DKM calendar with the greatest attention. The other dates will not change." Entries for the four categories DKM (OK), DJKM (OKJ), DSKM (KZ2) and DSKC (KZ2) can be made from January 2018 via the website www.kart-dm.de. 2018 DKM calendar:

VOLANT RNT SINGLE-SEATER FOR

ULYSSE DE PAUW, WINNER OF AN EXCEPTIONAL COHORT At the end of a selection process started last summer and which ended on the Bugatti circuit of Le Mans in recent days, Ulysse De Pauw has been selected to join the RACB National Team. From next year, the young driver will have the objective to shine in the French F4 Championship thanks to the support of Renault Belgium-Luxembourg.

"I confirm Marc Duez’s observation," said Bas Leinders, the Captain of the RNT. "The six finalists sometimes had to deal with a very cold track. It was not easy for them but it allowed us to learn a lot. This year, the standard was particularly high and despite the stakes, the atmosphere was always excellent between these competitors. Hats off to all of them."

T

"What has happened to me is frankly exceptional," said Ulysse (16), obviously moved by the news. "This afternoon, I had the feeling of having driven well and I waited impatiently for the jury's deliberation. From now on, I will devote all my energy to preparation for the 2018 season to try to take the colours of the RACB National Team as high as possible. It's up to me to prove that I deserved the trust of the jury."

he final of the RACB National Team Volant Single-Seater took place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bugatti circuit in Le Mans. At the wheel of Auto Sport Academy F4, the six finalists were faced with very varied track conditions.

"These young people have been very calm in the changing conditions," said Marc Duez, the coach of the RACB National Team. "To tell the truth, they met everything: intense showers, drizzle. They drove on a track that was sometimes dry, sometimes wet. Despite the impressive number of kilometres covered and the importance of the results, none went off. This edition of the RNT Volant Single-Seater was an exceptional vintage."

At the end of the deliberation, the jury, composed of Marc Duez, Bertrand Baguette, Bas Leinders and Geoffroy Theunis decided to select Ulysse De Pauw.

Already part of the RACB National Team, the young man will compete in the 2018 French F4 Championship with the support of Renault Belgium-Luxembourg.

FIRST FFSA HOMOLOGATIONS OF THE 2018 MINIME / CADET CHASSIS The FFSA announced mid-season the technical definition of the chassis intended to equip the Minime / Cadet categories in France from 2018. In a spirit of harmonisation, the Italian Minikart ACI-CSAI (2015-2020) and elements of the future CIK-FIA Mini category (from 2021) was used as the basis for the development of the Minime / Cadet technical regulations, the main feature of which remains the 950mm wheelbase.

T

he specifications of the 2018 FFSA 950 Minime / Cadet chassis was sent to manufacturers in July. The first three registrations were validated at the beginning of December during regulatory inspection visits. These are the AS 950 model from Alpha Karting homologated under the number 06-FFSA-18, the Birel ART C28 No. 01-FFSA-18 and the Sodi AS 950 No. 05FFSA-18. Several other brands will follow shortly. The updated list of homologated chassis is available on the ffsa.org website in PDF format under the heading "Karting Technical Annexes". The new FFSA 950 Minime / Cadet chassis will come into effect in 2018 for the French Championships and French Cups Minime, as well as for the French Championships and Cups, League Championships, National Series and Friendly Races in Cadet. FELIPE MASSA

TAKES OVER THE PRESIDENCY OF THE CIK-FIA

A

n important figure in the world of motorsport, whose reputation far exceeds the circle of enthusiasts, Felipe Massa has just hung up his helmet after nine seasons in Formula 1 and a Vice-World Championship title in 2008 with Ferrari. Like many car champions, Felipe Massa made his debut in Karting before climbing up the competition ladder to the highest level. At 36, he becomes the youngest President of the CIK-FIA.

Following the FIA General Assembly held on Friday 8th December 2017 in Paris, the name of the new President of the International Karting Commission of the FIA has been announced. The Brazilian Felipe Massa will succeed Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa to preside over the destinies of global Karting.

Felipe Massa takes over from outgoing CIK-FIA President Shaikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al Khalifa, whose long term from 2011 to 2017 has been marked by milestones for the development of the discipline. In 2013, the CIK-FIA Championships benefited from a private promoter for the first time with WSK Promotion. An emblematic measure for Driver safety, the new front fairing fasteners appeared in 2015, one year before the introduction of the new OK engines, while the lowering of the Drivers' age in 2017 has revitalised Karting competition all around the world. A man immersed in the field, with extensive experience and an encyclopedic knowledge of karting since its origins, Kees Van De Grint is confirmed in his place as Vice-President of the CIK-FIA.

2018 - REINFORCED INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR

VICTOR BERNIER Victor Bernier’s 2017 season has brought outstanding prospects. He does not intend to stop there and has greater ambitions for next year with a complete programme. Juggling with the dates, we will see him continuing his ascent in France as well as internationally.

2017

has allowed Victor to take several important steps out of the Cadet category. Winner of the last event of the French Junior Championship in Saint-Amand at just 13 years old, he took advantage of his training at the FFSA Academy to become French Vice-Champion in National and win the category, in the general classification as well as rookies, at the end of the three rounds of the NSK. His gamble of participating in the World Junior Championship at PF International (GBR) ended with an exceptional result of 9th out of 94 entries in OK-Junior.

Qualifying Heats. He finished in 5th position in his Prefinal and was downgraded to 20th because of a penalty. Victor threw all his strength into the Final battle to regain 11 places and finish 12th.

"I'm preparing for new challenges in 2018." explains Victor. "I'm going to join the VDK Racing team to race in some WSK events, the European Championship and the World Championship in OK-Junior with Aurélien Fath as my mechanic. The IAME International Final will also be one of my goals. Nevertheless, I will continue to race in France with PB Kart in the National category because it is very good training. The NSK and Rotax France Final are already on the calendar, but I would also like to try to win the title of French Champion, if I manage to participate in the League Championship in the middle of all these races." Victor thanks all of the partners who contributed to his tremendous progress: Mega Games, Extreme Limit, Heritage and Real Estate and City Kart, while promising them great battles for 2018.

Qualified for the second time for the Rotax Max Grand Final Challenge, in Portimao (PRT) Victor faced the 71 best drivers in the world in Junior Max. Very fast in free practice, he did not find the right slipstream in Qualifying, but managed to climb to 9th in the

HUGO VAIR,

THE EMERGENCE OF A PROMISING TALENT AT PORTIMAO Although Hugo Vair’s ticket for the Grand Final Rotax surprised more than one observer, it is mainly because this young driver doesn’t blow his own trumpet. Rather reserved, even shy at first, Hugo nonetheless a resourceful driver. At Portimao, he still managed to reach 10th after the Rotax Junior Qualifying Heats on a level playing field including the top 71 drivers in the category from around the world. The Final stages were not favourable to him because of a recurring technical problem, but his astonishing potential did not go unnoticed.

H

ugo made his competition debut just two years ago, in the Cadet category in the PACAC region. He then raced at the national level during the

2016 season with very average results. The work done with Jean-Philippe Guignet's Trèfle Racing team has begun to bear fruit this year in National. Delighted with his 2nd place in the NSK at Salbris, Hugo kept up the pace and finished 5th in the Championship out of 70 drivers. His 2nd place in the rookie standings behind Victor Bernier opened the way for the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Portimao.

"I was very tense with the challenge of Portugal at the last NSK in Val d'Argenton,” Hugo confided very calmly. "At the beginning of the season, the general standard in National seemed to be than I imagined. But little by little, I found my place and I began to believe in myself. Receiving the ticket for Portimao with Team France moved me deeply. I was stressed and I do not like that feeling. That's why I decided to tackle the Rotax Grand Final in the most relaxed way possible.” “It was not very effective during testing where I was really not very fast. The team worked very well on my kart, but I was not in the game yet. From my 32nd in Qualifying, I thought I had to go forwards. I managed

56

REPORTAGE

some great runs, leaving a margin by not taking risks. My ambition was to qualify for the Finals. I was very happy to be in the top 10 of the heats. Unfortunately, I was then faced with a technical problem that the Rotax Service could not resolve. Many engine cutouts prevented me from defending my chances in the Prefinal and I could not get to the end of the Final. “Portimao was my first international race. Beyond the Final disappointment, it will remain a great memory for me, because I am basically very satisfied with what I managed to do. I want to thank all my local sponsors who allow me to race all year long and who supported me for this great challenge. I made a lot of progress thanks to Jean-Philippe Guignet and the Trèfle Racing team. A big thank you to Thomas Benisri, Chicco and Gérard Davitti, not forgetting the know-how of the engine builder Win-Max Engines." At only 14 years old, with a limited experience of racing, Hugo has this year revealed unsuspected qualities that must undoubtedly make everyone proud. Having seen him race at Portimao makes it possible to envisage a bright future for this young, very intelligent driver whose endearing personality and astonishing maturity deserve to be encouraged.

MARCUS AMAND

ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS French Champion and winner of the French Minikart Cup in 2015, Marcus Amand then achieved remarkable results in Minime and Cadet. At 11, his victory in Mini Max at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final at Portimao has confirmed the hopes logically placed on him.

lthough the federal competitions have not been successful since the Minikart, Marcus has nevertheless achieved top results at the national level. At the wheel of his Bertrand Pechon PB Kart team Zanardi, he became vice-champion NSK Minime in 2016 and he has largely dominated the Cadet category this year, earning his ticket for the Rotax World Finals in Portugal. In an extremely competitive context, he knew how to make the difference on an equal basis with the best drivers from 30 countries around the world, competing in the Mini Max category (10-13 years old) on Birel ART chassis.

Very fast in the free practice sessions, Marcus set the 6th fastest time before progressively returning to 4th position in the heats. He soon took control of the Prefinal and won the race with a consistent lead over his rivals. The fight was tighter in the Final, but Marcus was not intimidated by the threat of very close opponents and assured a great victory for France which testifies to his potential and maturity.

"I was already very happy to have won the NSK in my first season in Cadet, explained the young driver with Franco-Finnish ties. "But it's another thing to win at the Rotax final. I loved this competition which is a bit special. We all fight on equal terms, chassis and engine, and the set-up changes are limited. The team worked well to find the right set-up in this highly regulated environment. On the track, detachable spoilers had to be taken into account and penalties avoided. I was confident because I knew I could be very fast. It was necessary to manage the opposition, but everything went well. I will now move towards OK-Junior, a challenge that I look forward to and for which I am actively preparing." See you early in 2018 for Marcus’ first appearances in the Junior category where his talent should allow him to shine in his first international season.

Camille Prouteau started in karting at the national level in the Cadet category before moving to National last year. A breakthrough has occurred this year thanks to first-rate performances such as his victory at the NSK in Varennes. A member of the CBK team, he has progressed a lot at the wheel of his Kosmic. His results came to fruition with a 2nd place finish in the NSK championship, which won him his ticket for the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final at Portimao.

But it was from the heats that he really entered top gear, after a very solid run in which he showed excellent speed and good passing ability without making mistakes. His quick assimilation of all the parameters allowed him to reach an incredible 5th position.

His team progressed simultaneously in the development of the equipment thanks to the very effective feedback from the young driver after each race. Prefinal A confirmed Camille’s rise to 3rd position. Highly motivated, he attacked as soon as the lights of the Final went out and joined the top three. The fight then intensified in the lead pack. BOWS OUT ON THE PODIUM OF WORLD ROTAX A great animator of the DD2 category in France, Charly Hipp is also one of the DD2 Masters protagonists of the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. For his fifth participation in the event, probably his last, success has finally come to him in the end as he climbed to the 3rd step of the Final podium in front of the world's top drivers in the discipline.

"I

had a lot of fun this year at Portimao," confided Charly. "I like the track and the Algarve region, I was spared from problems and I fought in the top three all the time. In addition, the atmosphere was excellent and the weather superb. What more could I want? I will take this opportunity to thank Sodikart, Jean-Marie and Mickaël from the Kurb team, Olivier and Mathieu the mechanics and of course my whole family. I will now hang up my helmet as a newcomer arrives, Noa, my son, who is making a very interesting debut in karting."

Charly qualified at the end of a very good season in NSK. Triple winner in DD2 Master, he prefers to look at the general classification of DD2 where he likes to compete against the younger drivers. After a pole position and two overall podiums, Charly is not looking his 37 years! This is how he qualified for the Rotax Grand Final at Portimao, a circuit he likes on which he has already taken two 7th places in 2012 and 2015. Taking advantage of the Free Practice to work on the search for the ideal set-up, Charly was already 8th out of 72 in Qualifying. Improving his strategy by trying to calm his enthusiasm behind the wheel of his Sodi, he completed a remarkable run in the heats by returning to 3rd position. Although he didn’t have the fastest machine in the field, he managed to control his opponents thanks to his legendary braking. He continued at the same pace in Prefinal A and crossed the finish line in 2nd position. Unfortunately, a penalty of 10'' initially relegated him to 19th place. This setback was offset by the new rule averaging between the heats and the Prefinals. Charly could therefore start from 8th place on the starting grid of the Final. Although the coveted victory was now difficult to achieve, he still had a good hand to play during the 25 laps of the race. He quickly joined the leading group and fought for 3rd place until the chequered flag. A little help from fate allowed him to get on the podium to celebrate a great career in DD2.

His mastery at the last event at Val d'Argenton allowed him to take a great victory and win his ticket to the Rotax Grand Final at Portimao.

"My goal was to be in the top 10 of the competition," confided the ten year old driver. "In fact, I immediately saw that I was able to compete with the best, and I was really comfortable. I then had to deal with several incidents in the heats, but I caught up during the Prefinal. Of course, I was very disappointed not to be able

A spoiler unhooked in the fight of the second heat was costly for him, returning him to 17th. Theophile drove a good Prefinal and finished 7th with a gain of four places. Everything was still possible. Unfortunately, he encountered engine problems from the start of the Final and was hit. With a damaged chassis, he had to leave the scene after a lap. ROTAX GRAND FINAL: WELL DESERVED WORLD PODIUM FOR

NOMBLOT The value of his performance in Portimao could have even raised hopes for a victory for Jean Nomblot during the world showdown of the best Rotax Senior drivers, but the race decided otherwise. The 2017 season for the young Parisian driver has nonetheless been exceptional with many successes confirming his maturity and talent.

W

ith the KPR team of Dominique Chech, Jean won his first French Championship in Senior X30 before taking the podium of the French Rotax Max Championship at Muret a week later. In NSK, he won the prize in the Rotax Max category with two consecutive and indisputable successes at Varennes and Val d'Argenton, completing a landmark season at the national level. Qualified in Team France, he then raced in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final in Portimao for the first time in his young career.

REPORTAGE

His ability to adapt allowed him to be in the top 10 in Free Practice, but the Timed Practice didn’t go as well as expected. After setting the 14th time in his group, he was only 37th overall. He had to push without making mistakes during the Qualifying Heats by starting far from the front row. Both fast and combative, Jean fulfilled his mission by reaching 10th position on Thursday night. He then continued his momentum in Prefinal B by taking the lead after only five laps and took a very convincing victory. After a cautious start, he joined the top three of the Final at half way.

"The team did a great job in the highly regulated setting of the Rotax Grand Final,” explained Jean with his usual calm. "I had no other worries than coming back to the front of the race. I did not rush at the start of the Final and I was able to raise the pace at the right time to go back to the leaders. After that, things got complicated. With the presence of detachable spoilers, it is very difficult to overtake a clever driver like Brett Ward without risking a penalty. At this level, all shots are allowed, it seems. Blocked behind the Englishman, I was even attacked by Felix Wargé at the end of the race and I had to settle for 3rd place. That said, I think I managed a good overall performance after the Qualifying with many overtakes. I really enjoyed this event, especially as the atmosphere was excellent between the French drivers."

CRAIG TANIC CONFIRMS AT PORTIMAO

Crowned French Cadet Champion at Saint Amand at the end of July, Craig Tanic proved the extent of his talent at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final in November in the south of Portugal. Fast as well as combative, he was noticed in the Qualifying Heats before meeting several setbacks during the final stages.

T

he young Martiniquais stands out from the other drivers of his age with an astonishing calmness and a taste for hard work. It is not easy, however, to train in the West Indies, where the lack of a track often forces him to drive in a slightly landscaped car park. It seems that this difficulty hasn’t decreased Craig’s passion, always joined by his parents, both former kart drivers. On the contrary, his motivation increases tenfold when he arrives in France to race on real circuits. At Saint-Amand, he caused a sensation by winning the French Cadet Championship against the top mainland drivers. Qualified for the Rotax Grand Final in Mini Max, he used the Birel ART chassis he knows well. Otherwise, the engine, the tyres, the Portimao track and the very restrictive rules of the Rotax world competition were

totally unknown to him. He and his father were fumbling somewhat during the equipment development during free practice, at the same time as he was becoming familiar with the track. Work began to pay off in Qualifying with a 12th position among the 36 best Mini Max drivers from 30 different countries. But it was during the Qualifying Heats that Craig was at his most brilliant. He made two good recoveries despite the intensity of the battles in the pack and was ranked 8th in the competition. Unfortunately the situation was complicated during the final stages: jostling, an incident and a penalty prevented him from scoring a good result at the end of the meeting.

"I was a little upset after all these problems," confided Craig with his legendary calm. "I knew I had the ability to get a good result once my dad found the right settings. I was on fire in the heats and I think everyone could see what I could do on equal terms with my opponents. For the rest, it's the racing. My 2017 season has been fantastic and I will do everything I can to continue the dynamic next year."

WILLIAMSON, A YOUNG AND PROMISING DRIVER AT THE ROTAX GRAND FINAL

The most obvious trait of Andrew Williamson is his permanent smile and his joy at participating in a world event like the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final. To appreciate his performance at its fair value, it is important to keep in mind his tender age, 17, and his short experience in racing. A sportsman at heart, Andrew came to karting late in 2014. He really began to make progress the following year when he joined Didier Durand's DSS team.

"I

m very happy with my first season in DD2,” explained this Anglo-French driver with a slight accent. "I won the Rotax Max France Challenge at Ancenis in front of drivers who were much more experienced than me, and that gave me real confidence. I also finished 3rd in the NSK with a podium at Salbris and a victory at Varennes. It was great to participate at the Rotax Grand Final in Portugal for the first time. The event is amazing and the atmosphere excellent in the French team. I had a great time, even though I narrowly failed to qualify for the Final. After such a season, I have only one desire, to continue to progress in karting with the DSS team! "

82

REPORTAGE

Andrew took advantage of free practice to understand the subtleties of the Portimao layout and develop his Birel ART DD2. Not quite everything was in place during Qualifying Practice where he only achieved the 59th time. By making great comebacks in the Qualifying Heats Andrew showed his true competitive face. The mission, however, was difficult from the back of the grid, but the youngster’s morale was never in question. He was 37th in the Intermediate Classification and he gave his all in Prefinal A. Unfortunately, it became more difficult to continue to regain ground as the struggle intensified. He finished 18th, which placed him as the first non-qualifier, in 37th position. While some might have let their disappointment burst out, Andrew only remembered the positive points of the competition and did not hide his pleasure at having raced among the 72 best Rotax drivers in the world at Portimao. See you in 2018 for new performances from Williamson and his infectious pleasure in kart racing.

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

Rotax and the electric a very coherent bet on the future BRP-Rotax's announcement last September of its electrically-powered competition kart caused a sensation while posing many questions. A long discussion with Helmut Voglsam, sales manager for the Rotax kart division, gave us a better understanding of Rotax's strategy in this area.

Mr. Volgsam, firstly, where does the new electrical project sit in Rotax's strategy? - The arrival of Rotax THUNDeR is a major strategic development for Rotax, accompanied by a radical change in philosophy. The concept we have developed is not intended to overshadow our internal combustion range nor classic karts in general. This is for us to take advantage of the latest technological advances to attract new participants to karting.

What are the main axes that you have chosen to widen the base of karting drivers? - The Rotax THUNDeR project is a bridge between what we today call esport, that is to say the world of

87

KARTCOM NEWS #38

video games, with pure competition. We want to attract a large number of young people familiar with computer or smartphone screens to actual racing. We must introduce a good dose of innovation at all levels of our project, especially to facilitate access to racing at a lower cost.

In concrete terms, how does this translate? - The first part of our concept is 100% virtual. The entire discovery and learning phase is done via a smartphone app. I speak of course of driving, but also of set-up and development of the kart. As each change has a direct impact on the machine's performance, the e-driver's experience grows at a rapid pace, drawing on the skills and passion of gamers. The torque of an electric motor is completely different from that of an internal combustion engine and lends itself more to

88

INTERVIEW

89

KARTCOM NEWS #38

computer modeling. The parameters of the app allow the modification of its characteristics and to test them in simulation. This is particularly important for learning how to manage power consumption according to the set-up. The simulation of a complete race makes it possible to choose a strategy adapted to the energy available in the batteries. The driver must decide for himself how he uses his standard reserves and the boost he has.

And for the transition to real competition? - When they come face to face with the reality of the track, young people will be better equipped to immediately assimilate the behaviour of the kart and they will need much less time and work to develop their equipment. They will always fine-tune the hardware, but the margin will be much narrower thanks to their knowledge already acquired in the virtual world.

90

INTERVIEW We are preparing a new type of championship, more spectacular and fast-paced thanks to an intensive race format. This will lend itself to TV broadcasting for a wide audience. The races will be much shorter than the usual 20-25 laps of a Final. We imagine several drivers will race at once during runs of a minute or two. The suspense will be important until the end with different possible ways to use the amount of available energy. Several events are planned for next summer to test the implementation and the best adapted formats. Of course, the equipment will be provided by the organiser, which will allow us to control the operation and to evolve the technology when needed. We are working closely with the designers of the tracks to develop sites suitable for this type of event. There will be a significant need for power to run fast chargers and not all tracks are equipped for this at the moment.

91

KARTCOM NEWS #38

What are the first responses to this innovative formula? - We are targeting a new audience of drivers. We are convinced that electric power will develop and we have long-term goals in this area. We have already recorded much positive feedback on our project as well as several very serious requests from companies that are keenly interested. Circuit designers are also keenly interested, which makes us very optimistic.

Characteristics of the Rotax THUNDeR The chassis chosen for this innovation is the Sodi DD2 with its integrated front and rear braking system. For the motor, BRP-Rotax has teamed up with Italian company SMRE, which specializes in green mobility. Based in Austria, RIC TECH was created by combining the skills of both companies to produce the Rotax THUNDeR.

92

INTERVIEW Engines The Rotax THUNDeR is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) developing torque of 46Nm and a standard power of 20kW with a boost to 24 kWh. The unit is air cooled and its maximum speed is 7800rpm. Three different gear ratios are available as well as a reverse gear.

Energy Electricity is stored in two 96v Lithium-Ion batteries, for a total weight of 18kg and a capacity of 2.5kWh. A full charge takes six hours, but a fast charge is possible in 50 minutes.

Performance The Rotax THUNDeR weighs 130 kg empty, is capable of reaching 130 km / h and goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5'' without emitting the any CO2 while benefiting from reduced maintenance and many set-up options via a connected terminal.

HUGO CHEVALIER,

2018 PORSCHE CARRERA CUP FRANCE HOPEFUL After a four-day selection process at the Paul Ricard Circuit, Hugo Chevalier has been named the Porsche Carrera Cup France Hope of 2018. The HautSavoyard will receive a large financial endowment and sports coaching to make his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup France the next season.

E

ach year, Porsche France and its partners organise an initiative to detect young talents aged between 15 and 25 with high level experience in karting or motorsport, who haven’t yet raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup or the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

Advised by Patrick Pilet, sponsor of the Porsche Carrera Cup France, the candidates took part in driving assessments, a physical evaluation and individual interviews, which allowed their competitiveness to be rated, as well as their ability to represent the Porsche Motorsport values, their language skills and their willingness to put together a supplementary budget for the coming season. After a season of single-seaters, saloons or karting, Jérémy Sarhy (Clio Cup France), Hugo Chevalier (F4), Victor Blugeon (Mitjet), Theo Coicaud (Formula Renault 2.0), Alexandre Marchois (Mitjet), Jérémie Lesoudier (Clio Cup Spain), Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer (Formula Renault 2.0) and Evan Pichard-Arnaud (KZ2) participated in the event organised at the Paul Ricard Circuit before the final of the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup France. Never since the creation of this selection process had the level been so high and consistent.

118

AUTO Hugo Chevalier, aged 17, succeeds Valentin Hasse-Clot as Porsche Carrera Cup France Hopeful. He will receive 30,000 euros from Porsche France, financial support from a Porsche Center, a Michelin tyre endowment and sporting support from Patrick Pilet ...

"I have the feeling of entering the big leagues. The process went really well, with a great atmosphere between the drivers. I learned a lot during the track sessions and interviews. I think my determination made the difference. Every morning, I get up with the goal of becoming a professional driver. I live for that. And it's no coincidence that I chose to participate in this selection ... Entering the Porsche system with the goal of climbing the pyramid is an almost unique opportunity. I will work even harder to progress. It's still difficult for me to set goals for 2018, but I would like to win the Rookie standings, aim for a podium, then a pole position and try to win a race. It will be especially necessary to be consistent throughout the season."

A Junior Karting driver last year, noting his incredible 34th-9th run in the Bahrain World Championship Final, Charles Milesi has shown great potential in his first season in single-seaters. With four victories and seven podium finishes in the French F4 Championship, as well as a victory and three podiums in FR 2.0 (NEC), the young Burgundian driver has risen to his new challenge. 2017 has allowed him to identify the points to work on in 2018, a year which he addresses with strong ambitions.

A virus contracted in mid-season could have thwarted his progress, but with determination he was able to cope. Few drivers can boast of equally flattering results in two categories for a first year in motorsport. Anthony Beltoise, who follows him closely and advises him, was able to appreciate the progress of his protegee with a keen eye: "Charles deserves to be congratulated for his debut in motorsport. He is an intelligent boy who takes every opportunity to progress. I am convinced that he will go far!"

Very fast, Charles has achieved spectacular coups against opponents much more experienced than him. He is now focusing on improving his consistency and his ability to adapt to different conditions in order to reap the benefits of its high potential more regularly. The manager of the R-ace GP team, Thibaut de MÊrindol is delighted with his progress: "Charles did very well for his first season in single-seaters. We were very satisfied with his debut in FR 2.0 and we think that 2018 will bring good results for him in Eurocup. It is true that Charles’ lucidity, perfectionism and courage of make him one of the young French talents to watch closely next year.

"I've had the pleasure of reaching many podiums in 2017," said Charles. "And I took four victories. I can be satisfied with my first single-seater season, although I think I could have done even better. In any case, I quickly found my bearings during an enriching double programme. I will approach 2018 with a good knowledge of my strengths, as well as the gaps I have to fill. The offseason will allow me to work in this direction without moving away from the circuits. My goal is to be one of the top rookies in Eurocup FR 2.0." An intensive programme of physical and mental preparation will be at the heart of his winter schedule. Charles will also participate in the Castrol Toyota Racing Series with the MTEC team, a championship over five events in New Zealand in January and February 2018, before starting well-armed in the ten events of the Eurocup FR 2.0 with Team R-ace GP.
