A FLYING START TO THE AUTUMN Although the international teams have not exactly spent August at the beach, the holidays have allowed a certain lull for most competitors before a return at the end of summer. The FIA Karting World Championships were two weeks apart, moving from Finland to Italy. Efforts have been made on both sides to offer attractive meetings to karting enthusiasts.

I
n this area, the new Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy also made the difference in late August at Le Mans with great attention to the enjoyment of the participants. The success of single international events bringing together big entries has not been lost in recent years. It must be said that the organisers can rely on consistent resources to make their meetings a success. Scrutinised in the slightest detail, national and regional competitions suffer from the comparison, with local teams sometimes struggling to implement the rigour now essential for success. We still rely on volunteers, often aging, whose replacement is always more difficult. Indispensable and widely used, they are also the target of some polemics, where criticism is easy, but concrete proposals much rarer. A new operating model still needs to be invented to move forward.
In terms of racing, the Alahärmä weekend was exciting thanks to an exceptional setting and a spectacular layout. Lorenzo Travisanutto confirmed his leadership and that of the KR / Iame in the OK category by winning a second world title. Thomas Ten Brinke has earned a deserved success in Junior after a quick rise and many battles. Several protagonists were not able to satisfy their ambitions on a track they were learning. In contrast, all the drivers knew Lonato perfectly and without a doubt the record was exceeded in the preparatory test sessions. However, a hierarchy quickly formed, both in KZ and KZ2. Has the technical aspect taken precedence over the talent of the drivers? The answer is impossible to give, but we saw very good performances from two teams, Birel ART and Sodi, in the face of the constant speed represented by Tony

The TM Racing engines have once again demonstrated their value in the hands of different tuners Franco Drudi and the TM Racing factory in KZ, Bruno Daldosso in KZ2, as well as a newcomer, the Frenchman Cédric Sport Motors in both categories. World KZ has also experienced a rejuvenation of the top drivers, as young people are now able to surpass those who were called the professionals of karting. With the end of Marco Ardigo's racing career, the highly exclusive club of experienced professional drivers loses one of its big names. The French team CPB Sport has confirmed its leading role in KZ2 with the irresistible rise of Emilien Denner to the victory of the FIA Karting International Super Cup that we can’t call the World Championship, despite its undeniable global standard.

FRANCE AUTO KARTING A look back on 15 years of the Julie Tonelli Foundation for Children
I
n October 2002, Julie Tonelli died in a car accident. This young 19-year-old driver immediately aroused a surge of solidarity that would give birth a little later to a foundation bearing her name. Created by her parents, the Julie Tonelli Foundation for Children has since honoured her memory by defending values that were dear to her. Help for children who are sick or in difficulty are at the heart of the Foundation's concerns, which uses its own funds for this purpose. At the same time, the Foundation brings its memories to life in the world of karting and motor racing through the famous pink butterflies on stickers, t-shirts, caps and other materials that it distributes for free. Thanks to the complete article published in issue 129 of the French magazine France Auto Karting, you can read Julie’s complete story and the commitment of her parents through the Julie Tonelli Foundation for Children.

The FFSA Academy is already preparing for the 4th season of the French Junior Karting Championship. The success of the third edition, won by Esteban Masson has definitely backed up the place of the FFSA’s detection and training formula in the French karting landscape. The quality of the equipment, the extremely competent management, the five-race programme and the budget with no surprises make this turnkey concept a very interesting option in the careers of young drivers, who can approach it without logistical concerns.

RMCIT DRAW OSCAR PELLEMELE RECEIVES HIS RYKER! Oscar Pellemele lined up at the start of the 1st Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy which took place at the end of August on the Le Mans circuit. Although his beautiful performance ended in retirement, Oscar was very happy to have participated in this beautiful event, especially as he did not leave empty handed. The organisers had prepared two very well-endowed prize draws and Oscar had the chance to win a BRP Can-Am Ryker. Too young to be able to take the handlebars before next year, his father Christophe took the controls of the machine and reported on this memorable moment. ROBIN DOUCET FROM THE EFK TO RACING THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF THE CENTRAL LEAGUE AND KARTAGENE
Moving from an FFSA French Karting School to racing is a crucial step and often difficult to manage for parents. Beyond the budget needed, lack of knowledge of the environment and the right information is at the origin of many premature retirements. However, sometimes it takes a little help for the move to be made painlessly. The story of young driver Robin Doucet is a good example. Robin is a very young driver who has approached karting by the right route by taking part in an EFK from the start. In this case, Robin made his debut at Salbris within a very dynamic EFK. Thanks to the experience with Kartagene and Marc Berteaux, his basic training proved solid. With his Golden Wheel in his hands, Robin wanted to discover racing, with the agreement and

support of his parents. Before starting, they thought additional training would be an advantage. This is where the Central Karting League comes in. Under the leadership of its president Martine Raynaud, the League generously puts competitive karts at the disposal of future drivers to allow them to test during the winter.
Robin took his chance and put in many laps at Salbris during the winter training sessions offered by Kartagene. With his motivation and talent confirmed on the track, the decision was made to launch Robin in the Minime category with the technical and logistic support of Sologne Sport Tech and the support of Kartagene. The record of this first season is interesting in more ways than one. Thanks to the involvement of the FFSA representatives and the professionals concerned, the transition between the EFK and competition was painless and karting has gained a new driver determined to continue to progress. Robin's results brought himself and his family great satisfaction.

GABRIELE MINI’ CROWNED FIA KARTING ROOKIE OF THE YEAR 2019
In order to highlight the emergence of young talents at the highest level of Competition, each year the CIK-FIA organises a specific classification for Drivers up to 16 years of age participating in the FIA Karting World Championship and in the FIA Karting European Championship in the OK category for the first time. Among the thirty Drivers who met these criteria, the Italian Gabriele Mini' has been remarkably prominent throughout the season. He had the most points in the fight to be named Rookie of the Year 2019.
T
he young Drivers competing against their elders in the benchmark karting category, OK, regularly occupy a large proportion of the field. Developed in OK-Junior, these youngs-
ters challenge the very experienced Drivers with no difficulty throughout the international season, including former World Champions and European Champions. This is why the CIK-FIA has decided

ALEX POWELL THE SERIES OF PODIUMS CONTINUES
The young Jamaican go-kart champion Alex Powell has distinguished himself throughout the five meetings of the famous Italian Championship of 2019. After another podium at the beginning of September at the closing event at Val Vibrata, the Mercedes F1 Junior Team protégé concluded his Championship with a convincing 3rd position overall in the 60 Mini category. With the Energy Corse team, Alex is now focused on the last major events of the season, with a major step to be taken very soon for the motorsport hopeful.

A REGULAR PRESENCE IN THE TOP THREE IN ITALY
I
n 2019, no less than 70 drivers were classified in the ACI Karting Italian Championship. Among them, Alex Powell scored eight top six finishes in 10 races, including four podiums and two victories. At each race, the young Jamaican applied the instructions of his team and his coach Mike Wilson, the most successful karting driver ever with six world titles to his credit. "Alex was quick in all conditions," he said. "Even when the weather turned to rain at Adria at the end of July, Alex remained steady and scored important points in the overall standings. He is very attentive, determined and effective. He has won several Qualifying Heats in this championship, as well as Finals, but I think he can be even more combative because it is important to be respected in the pack, if he wants to continue his career in the high-level international categories in the best conditions." In the end, Alex Powell draws a very positive assessment of his Italian campaign, in addition to having gained valuable experience on circuits that he will undoubtedly visit again very soon. The winner of a race at Castelletto at the start of the season and on the podium a month later in Siena, he

or drivers in the Mini category, the International Rok Cup Final from 9th to 12th October is a very important event and Alex Powell has already started his preparation of this great event. He also participated in a Rotax Challenge event in New Jersey, USA. He led the race until a collision forced him to give up. At the end of the season, while Alex has just turned 12 on 18th September, it will be time to discover the Junior category before a highly anticipated 2020 season. In Junior there are two major official FIA Karting competitions, the European Championship and the World Championship, which have seen all the great Formula 1 drivers compete in recent years. A highly anticipated challenge for the well-motivated Jamaican driver!

AN INTERVIEW WITH
DINO CHIESA "IN A TEAM, THE HUMAN FACTOR IS ESSENTIAL"
Born in 1967, Dino Chiesa is one of the most respected and iconic team managers in the paddock. His career started as a driver in 1980, then quickly as a technician from 1984, where he supported the victorious karting careers of drivers like Alessandro Zanardi, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Nyck De Vries, Lance Stroll and many others. He has reached yet another dimension by starting to win with its own chassis brand KR. This new machine is already a champion, which is also to the credit of everyone around him throughout the season and who have been faithful to him for a long time already. You have attacked a second year with Kart Republic and the KR chassis, which were homologated by the CIKFIA on 1st January, 2018. What first assessment have you made from the beginning of the adventure?
- Honestly, I am very happy, the current situation exceeds my most optimistic forecasts. Creating a team with my own brand of chassis was a project I had had in mind for some time already. Since last year, it has become a reality and I do not regret it.
Did you expect such results in the first season of Kart Republic in 2018?
- The FIA Karting World and European Champion in OK was something incredible. Of course, I thought I could do best in this category. For the previous two years, I was team manager at CRG when Pedro Hilbrand became World Champion, then I held the same position at Zanardi when Danny Keirle took the world crown. I am also fortunate to have a strong partnership with the IAME factory, which provides me with high performance engines.
42
INTERVIEW Is the goal now to win as much in other categories? - The teams that race with our chassis have allowed us to win many victories in the Mini categories and in the brand challenges. We also have had great satisfaction in OK-Junior and KZ2. In 2018, Rick Dreezen became FIA Karting World Vice-Champion in KZ with a KR-IAME package. This is encouraging because the engine is still under development. The Pex brothers now use our chassis, so it will be interesting to see how the rest of their season will unfold, using TM Racing engines.
Kart Republic is currently a large team. You have also formed partnerships with other entities. Can you talk about it? - Thomas BraumĂźller's TB Racing Team was among the first to trust us and he managed to take Hannes Janker to the title of European Champion in OK in 2018. Hannes also finished as Vice World Champion. Last year, Nico Rosberg wanted to get involved in karting and he turned to me to take care of the technical part of the Rosberg Racing Academy. Together, we put Lorenzo Travisanutto on
43
KARTCOM NEWS #54
the road to the world title. Since the start of the season, Sauber Racing Team has wanted to be present at all stages of motorsport, from Karting to F1. We are in charge of the two karting drivers, Dexter Patterson and Joshua Dufek. Rickard Kaell, who has been working with me for a number of years, manages this pair. As another team involved in both karting and cars, there is CV Performance Group, which runs Lorenzo Travisanutto in 2019, they have already won a European and World Champion title! The KR brand can also count on other private teams. It's true that all of this is a lot of responsibility. The day-to-day management remains difficult, but it's also very exciting.
What is the strength of KR today? - Apart from the equipment, I can count on excellent technicians, whom I trust, because we have known each other for many years. Some have been there since I launched the DC-one brand in 2003. At that time, I had not managed to build enough structure to work in the long term. From now on, everything has changed! This is proof that the human factor is of great importance at all levels. We must manage very young drivers, but also their supporters, as parameters to take into account. Today, I have more time to think
about technical and strategic choices. We have about 45 people working with our drivers. Each of them spends more time at a track than with their own family!
Very often your drivers manage to make a difference compared to the competition. What is your recipe? - First of all, it is essential to have a chassis that can come straight from the assembly line and be effey in all conditions, with as many different tyres as possible and with settings close to those recommended as standard by the manufacturer. This objective implies perfect tube quality and adapted parts: seat, stub axles, rear axle, etc. In this way, it's possible to concentrate on the details, knowing that the most important thing during a race is the use of the tyres and the choice of their pressures. Making them work at the right temperature is crucial.
In the end, is the role of the driver still important? - Of course, I even think it's essential to win. In OK or Junior for example, at least 80% of the finalists have the equipment to win. Only the best manage to reach the podium.

Thomas Ten Brinke (FA Kart / Vortex) had a solid record of five wins in six heats and was leading, followed by Josep Marti Sobrepera (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR / Iame). James Wharton (Parolin / TM) presented himself as a formidable opponent at the start of the race, but his engine forced him to retire. Ten Brinke then pulled away from the chasing pack led by Rafael Camara (Exprit / TM). Starting 16th, Kajus Siksnelis (Tony Kart / Vortex) began an incredible comeback. TEN BRINKE JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPION AT ALAHÄRMÄ RFM.TEAM

KARTCOM NEWS #54
+
On the fast and selective circuit of Alah채rm채 in Finland, the RFM drivers have been very competitive despite the changing weather conditions and an often slippery track. The British team demonstrated remarkable expertise in managing the complex situation to perfection. Thomas Ten Brinke was crowned Junior World Champion after a mature clear run while in OK, Harry Thompson fought bravely to reach the podium in the Final.
T
he 2019 World Championship took place in early September in Finland on the Alah채rm채 circuit where Sami Taoufik took a decisive advantage in winning the OK European Championship in 2017. The fast and demanding layout of the Power Park does not make overtaking easy and mostly rewards the strongest drivers. This year, the changing weather produced a wide range of grip conditions, from dry to soggy asphalt and everything in between. A real challenge for teams and drivers, this particularly difficult World event has once again shown the mastery of Ricky Flynn Motorsport and the potential of its FA Kart / Vortex karts powered by One Engines. Because of the huge entry, 88 in OK and 104 in Junior, Qualifying Practice was of greater importance while the heats were stretched to five and six races respectively.
TEN BRINKE CELEBRATES IN OK-JUNIOR
T
he young Dutchman dominated the category with ease. Fast and consistent, he overcame all the
pitfalls of the competition to win a fully deserved World title. 4th at the end of Qualifying Practice, he then won five of his six heats by posting three fastest laps. Starting on pole position, he led the Final from start to finish far ahead of his opponents, on wet tyres on a drying track. He set two consecutive fastest laps before crossing the finish line as World Champion. A great demonstration of his progress within RFM since last season.
TOP PERFORMANCE FOR ALL JUNIORS
7
th in Qualifying, Laurens Van Hoepen won two heats, but was penalised for his spoiler and started 6th in the Final. After a tough battle, he finished 8th in the world in OK-Junior. Ugo Ugochukwu set the 8th fastest time out of the 104, and had the right pace in the heats, except in the fourth, a particularly difficult race, where he had to retire. He still reached the top 10 and climbed to 7th in the Final, but a spin prevented him from taking the finish. The other three young RFM drivers had to fight hard in the heats, following Qualifying positions between 20th and 26th position, with all the risks that involves. Christian Ho came
back to 15th then 11th place at the finish. Conrad Laursen finished with a 10-place climb in the Final that took him to 16th. Finally, Martinius Stenshorme finished in the top three twice in the heats, but finished only 29th in the Final because of a spoiler penalty.
THOMPSON: A TOP THREE AND SOME REGRETS
H
arry Thompson posted the 4th fastest time in his group, but was 21st overall. He fell to the back at the start of his first heat and ended up retiring. He then went on the attack in the heats with determination and made up a good part of his delay thanks to his two 2nd positions with the fastest laps in the race. But it was during the Final that Thompson made his mark by regaining no less than 12 places to mount the 3rd step of the podium. A remarkable performance that left him with some regrets about the beginning of the meeting. Currently 2nd in the DKM, after his double victory at Kerpen and another victorious comeback at Genk, Thompson will have a good card to play in the last round of the German Championship at Ampfing in early October. Christian Ho is in a similar position in OK-Junior in the DJKM after his double success at Genk.

PAROLIN STRONG INTERNATIONAL PROGRESS CONFIRMED AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Parolin Racing Kart's efforts extend to every category in Karting. Noted for several seasons by its dominance among the youngest drivers, Parolin also benefits from its success in Junior and OK to increase its presence throughout the market. In Finland, at the FIA Karting World Championship - OK and Junior, the Italian brand was the third largest chassis manufacturer with 16 drivers entered in its colours. Meanwhile, the performance was there with Racing Team drivers Gabriele Mini' in OK and James Wharton in Junior.

"I
t was not the best feeling to come back from Finland without a podium in at least one of the two categories. The potential we have shown in Finland does not reflect what we have achieved in terms of results. Wharton drove a perfect weekend despite an arm injury suffered on Thursday, and after winning the pre-race two weeks ago he was ready to fight for the title. To James' credit, after just three races with the team he was immediately on the pace and one of the main contenders for the World Championship - only bad luck denied him the opportunity to battle with Ten Brinke and Camara. In OK, after a sensational pole position for Mini', both he and Sasse scored some very good heat results, including several top three finishes, but we suffered slightly in the rain. However, we are pleased with the performances of our OKJ and OK packages and our partnership with TM is leading to improvements at every event. We are just looking forward to the next competition to try to fight for victory again." A fast track known for its difficulty and selectivity, the Alahärmä Power Park circuit saw very variable grip situations, going through all possible conditions between completely dry and very wet. Whatever the conditions, the Parolin chassis enabled their drivers to best show off their talent.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY IN OK FOR MINI'
T
he results of his first season in OK made Gabriele Mini' one of the great favourites of the 2019 World Championship following his 2nd place in the European Championship. On the very challenging circuit of Alahärmä, he opened the battle by taking pole position among the 88 best drivers in the world. Unfortunately, destiny hit from the start of his first run. He lost control of his kart after being pushed onto a kerb and had to retire. The young Italian hopeful gave his maximum to return to 16th in the heats and regained another eight places in the Final to finish in 8th place. He remained the holder of the absolute fastest time of the meeting until the end. Hugo Sasse had four good heats with a 2nd place and two 3rd places, but he was also delayed in the heaviest of the rain. At the edge of the top 10 on the Final starting grid, he was long in 10th position before falling back in the fight and finishing 19th.
JUNIOR: WHARTON ON THE RIGHT TRACK
M
ore and more successful at the wheel of his Parolin / TM Racing kart, the Australian James Wharton began with posting the 9th fastest time among the 104 participants of the Junior World Championship. He then asserted his claim by climbing to 4th place at the end of the Qualifying heats in which he never left the top three. He made an
excellent start to the Final close behind the leader, on whom he was preparing his attack. Unfortunately, his engine betrayed him on the fifth lap of the race.
The karting season is far from over, but Parolin is already sharpening its strategy for next year to highlight the unanimously recognised quality of its chassis in multiple categories.
Brando Badoer and Lukas Malek were off the mark after a tough Qualifying. In a bubbling pack, they were unable to join the list of 34 finalists. That same weekend, Rashid Al Dhaheri achieved his qualification for the 2019 Rok Super Final by winning the Rok Cup Italy at the Adria Karting Raceway with his Parolin chassis.

Rafael was already fast in Free Practice, but he hit even harder in Qualifying with the 2nd fastest time out of the 104 drivers, just 54 thousandths of a second off the pole. Well placed at the start of his six Qualifying Heats, Rafael crossed the finish line three times as a winner, whatever the track conditions. He drove with relative caution in the pouring rain and took a penalty of 3'' in one of the starts, but finished this hazardous phase in the top five. Starting from 5th position for the decisive Final, he took the time to gauge the situation on wet tyres on a drying track before going on the attack. He took 2nd place after only the fifth of the 21 laps and outdistanced his pursuers, the leader having already escaped out of reach. Rafael maintained a very high pace without any mistakes and was rewarded for his efforts and his talent by becoming FIA Karting Vice-World Champion - Junior of 2019. "My joy is immense! said Rafael. "Mounting the second step of a World podium is a moment that counts in the life of a driver, especially as Felipe Massa, President of the CIK-FIA congratulated me. during this long trip to Finland. The weather conditions proved to be very difficult, but our tyres always managed to reach an ideal operating temperature to ensure both the efficiency of the equipment used by the drivers and the excitement of the races."
PERFECT MANAGEMENT OF THE CONDITIONS
F Organised this year in Finland, the FIA Karting World Championship in OK was a great sporting and popular success. In front of full stands, Lorenzo Travisanutto won a second consecutive world crown after an exciting Final. At a meeting with extremely changeable weather conditions, LeCont tyres played their role perfectly, ensuring performance, consistency and sporting fairness, both in the dry and the wet.
OPTIMUM OPERATING TEMPERATURES
T
he partnership between the CIK-FIA and tyre manufacturer LeCont for the 2019 season continued in Alahärmä, Finland with the longest-awaited event of the OK category: the World Championship. Located in the heart of the Power Park, the largest theme park in the country, the
circuit, named after the former F1 driver Mika Salo has its share of difficulties for both drivers and teams, as it does for tyres. However, the LeCont brand met the expectations of the competitors, as confirmed by Paolo Bombara, Marketing Manager at LeCont.
rom Timed Practice on a perfectly dry track, LeCont was satisfied with a gap of one tenth between the four groups. Then, during the Qualifying Heats on Saturday and Sunday morning, the drivers faced almost every possible situation: dry lines, barely wet, almost flooded, drying, etc. Despite these extremely demanding circumstances, the number of incidents and skirmishes remained minimal despite the significant challenge of such a global event. Some drivers took the opportunity to highlight themselves in extreme conditions: sometimes on slicks on a wet track for example or for others in the downpours. "I am pleased to see that safety has been ensured during the event. The efforts of the organisers, the promoter RGMMC and the CIK-FIA were not in vain, while our CIK-FIA homologated tyres proved to be well-adapted to the situation."

At the end, the Finn was unable to counter the final rush of the two Britons Taylor Barnard and Harry Thompson, who accompanied the Italian champion on the podium. The excitement of the many spectators gathered around the circuit testified to the intensity of this Final. For LeCont, it was a new technological challenge that has been successfully met. For a few months now, another challenge has begun for the Italian brand. "2020 marks the beginning of a new CIK-FIA tyre homologation cycle. LeCont has the technology, the knowledge, experience and a large production unit able to perfectly meet the stringent specifications of the international federation. We are ready to welcome their representatives for the planned inspection very soon." In addition, the end of the season is traditionally the period during which the next tenders for tyres are prepared. T
he FIA Karting - KZ World Championship is undoubtedly the greatest and toughest event of the season. This year the world's best drivers competed on the famous Lonato track, the favorite training ground for the Italian factories. It was a dream field for a legendary race. In front of the specialists in the category, the young Adrien Renaudin was already formidable in Free Practice and confirmed this by taking pole position in Qualifying driving his Sodi / TM Racing powered by Cédric Sport Motors. He continued his exceptional progress in the heats and delivered a memorable battle in the Final. While he was in full battle for first place, a slight unfortunate collision halfway through the race kept him out of contention and he crossed the finish line in 2nd place. Unfortunately, a penalty for a spoiler dropped in the battle then relegated him to 9th. Always among the frontrunners, Bas Lammers managed a remarkable recovery from 9th position and enlivened the Final thanks to his legendary sense of attack. He overtook multiple times and was rewarded with an extraordinary 3rd place in the world.

BIREL ART WORLD CHAMPION:
OBJECTIVES MET FOR THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY The Birel ART Racing Team has just won the most beautiful of trophies, the FIA Karting World Championship. The Italian brand was victorious in the most demanding of categories, KZ, against all the top drivers in the world. In Italy, at the Lonato circuit that all the teams know perfectly, Birel ART knew how to make the difference thanks to highly competitive equipment. After the Final, Birel ART even managed to take a double success. While Marijn Kremers was the main recipient of this major success, Riccardo Longhi celebrated his debut in KZ with the title of Vice World Champion. For Birel ART, the work paid off, as well as that of the TM Racing engine brand and the technical staff. For the 60th anniversary of Birel ART, the clearly forecast goal has been achieved!

The President of Birel ART Group, Ronni Sala welcomed this triumph. network. Only this World Championship has been denied to us for too long. It must be remembered that at Genk in 2018, Marijn Kremers had already started from the first row in the Final, but he was the victim of a collision on the first lap! A few months ago, a similar incident happened to Alessandro Irlando, while the European Championship was close. This time we hit the goal. Marijn completed a perfect race, and he deserves the title. Riccardo was also incredibly fast and this 2nd place in KZ is very rewarding; he was still only in KZ2 a few months ago. The competitiveness of Irlando and that of our TM Racing
engines has confirmed that we are performing well with all our drivers! It's a pity that Alessandro had a technical problem at the start."
PALOMBA AND DAHLBERG STAND OUT IN KZ2
E
qually effective in any category, the Birel ART CRY-S10 chassis proved to be just as competitive in KZ2, with two drivers in the top 10. Swe-
den's Alexander Dahlberg spared no effort to move up from 20th to 10th place during the long Qualifying Heats. The Italian Giuseppe Palomba, who recently joined the Birel ART Racing Team, was also at the forefront through the entire meeting. After fierce battles in the pack, Palomba and Dahlberg managed to finish in 9th and 10th positions respectively out of a total of 121 drivers. Also a nod to Filippo Berto (Team Emilia Kart), 20th in the Final on his Birel ARTTM, and Matthew Payne (Team Patrizicorse) of Australia, 22nd on the starting
grid of the Final with his Ricciardo Kart chassis but unfortunately forced to retire too soon. Also fast, the Italian Leonardo Marseglia didn't qualify for the Final, as well as the Frenchman Pierre Loubère. Birel ART also congratulates the other teams who use the chassis from the Lissone factory, such as Birel ART Racing KSW, Vzeta Racing and Renda Motorsport. Once again, the performance of Birel ART at this World Cup was particularly strong.
added Luca Filini, team manager of Birel ART Racing. "The staff have done a lot to prepare for this event, down to the last detail. Motivated and determined, our drivers were perfect, as was TM Racing and the engine builders. In the world of karting, winning at Lonato is something special. Of course, we will continue to work to stay on this victorious trajectory."
"To win the title of World Champion during the 60th anniversary year of Birel ART is tremendous. The emotion is huge,"

n the presence of the world's best KZ2 drivers, all the manufacturers and teams were in the starting blocks on Lonato's famous South Garda Karting circuit for the big event of the season. In these particularly competitive conditions, perfection was needed to hope to get on the podium and the Energy Corse team was in control of the situation thanks to the huge amount of work done. The performance of the equipment never faltered during this demanding meeting, the technical staff played their role admirably and Emil Skaras exploited this competitiveness perfectly. "It was an extremely difficult race," admitted the Swedish driver. "After having achieved 3rd in Qualifying, my run in the heats was impeccable with three wins and three 2nd places! Starting on the front row in the Final, I knew that victory was possible. I also managed to take the lead and I hoped to win the Cup for Energy Corse, who have already won in the past. But the situation got tense in the next corner and I lost some places. I remained focused and managed to win my place on the third step of the podium. I would like to thank the Energy Corse team who provided me with a really effective chassis and Galiffa Tuning for its high performance TM Racing engines. European Champion and 3rd in this great world race is beautiful!"

GOOD PERFORMANCES AND CONTRASTING RESULTS AT LONATO The last event of the 2019 FIA Karting Academy Trophy took place from 19th to 22th September on the Italian circuit of Lonato, in parallel with the FIA Karting World Championship - KZ and the FIA Karting International Super Cup - KZ2. The French FFSA Espoirs Karting Team brought its two young drivers who have interesting speed potential. Elliott Vayron finished on a positive note in the top five of the Final at the end of a very encouraging overall performance, especially in terms of combativeness. The season has been more complicated for Mattéo Spirgel, who has not always been able to exploit his speed during the hard-fought races.

n international one-make formula, the FIA Karting Academy Trophy offers very good training ground for the young drivers of the FFSA French Karting Team. Well supervised by the FFSA Academy thanks to the knowledge and commitment of Marc Berteaux, Didier Blot and Julien Ménanteau, Elliott Vayron and Mattéo Spirgel took advantage of the three race weekends to enrich their experience and progress in a very high level series led by rivals with many races in OK-Junior under their belts. The progression of the young French drivers has been encouraging throughout the season, their main asset remaining their top speed.

He recovered the situation with a good effort and managed to join the top five approaching the finish after strong overtaking. He was credited with the second fastest lap in the race. Elliott has undoubtedly strengthened his mind during the season with the help of the FFSA Academy. In the intensity of the final battle, Mattéo lost ten places during the first laps before being able to recover. He seized his chance several times and ended up taking eight places to 19th place in the race, while having achieved the 8th fastest time. "The balance of the season is a mixture of satisfaction and disappointment" analysed Marc Berteaux. "Our drivers showed very good speed and yet the results were not up to our expectations. Elliott, however, has progressed by
being very attentive to our advice which has helped him to gain more and more confidence. At Lonato, he performed solidly. Mattéo had some difficulties in using his strong speed potential during the races while the battle was in full swing. His lack of experience at the international level did not help him."

Hugo Choisnet (Birel ART / TM), Louis-Henri Soulat (Birel ART / TM) and Nils Kaplon (Exprit / Iame) were fighting for 2nd place and finally Soulat headed Choisnet on the finish line.

VICTORIES AND TITLES FOR
PKS DRIVERS AT LAVAL PKS Competition was once again among the best rewarded teams at the last event of the 2019 NSK at Laval. In addition to very satisfactory overall performances, three victories, including a double and two titles, have recognised the excellent performance of its drivers at the same time as the work of Arnaud Sarrazin’s team.
149
KARTCOM NEWS #54
"T
he record of our season in NSK is largely positive," said the boss of PKS. "Our reorganisation has shown its effectiveness on many occasions and we are now able to satisfy a greater number of drivers, both within the team and with engines. Like last year, we supported three drivers in their qualification for the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals at Sarno."
PREPARING FOR NATIONAL
G
aspard Simon was racing positively in his first year in National, staying on the pace until the Final after a great start to the meeting. His 6th place under the chequered flag allowed him to finish at the foot of the podium of the Championship, an encouraging result for the future. Coming from Cadet, Marceau Lequy had the pleasure of mounting the podium of the 3MK Events Cup.
ROTAX MAX: FOURQUEMIN WINS THE RACE AND TREILLARD DE QUINEMONT THE CHAMPION
I
t’s hard to imagine a better result in the top category of the NSK. Paul Fourquemin ensured a real celebration with his pole position in Qualifying, his four race wins and the first step of the Final podium. His most serious opponent was none other than his team-mate Guillaume Treillard de
Quinemont, aiming to take the title, who followed him on the second step before celebrating his victory in the Championship ahead of... Fourquemin! A magnificent double for PKS at the top of Rotax Max. 10th in Max last year, Arthur Roché was confirmed in the top five in 2019. With an excellent 3rd fastest time, he had to face some setbacks in the heats before improving his score with 6th position in the Final with the second fastest lap of the race. Meanwhile, Antoine Cousin ensured a superb Final climb of 17 places to 15th place at the end of a beautiful race.
ANTIER AHEAD OF EVERYONE IN ROTAX MASTER
T
he unquestionable hero of Laval, Antoine Antier flew ahead of the category for drivers aged 30 years and over. He first scored an indisputable pole position in Qualifying before winning the three heats with a comfortable lead, each time being the fastest on the track. His domination continued in the Final with a clear victory and another fastest lap in the race. This exceptional result earned him 2nd place overall. Clément Morin and Antoine Viano completed the success of PKS in the top five of the Championship while Jerome Rousseau could look forward to finishing his first season in the top 10. For his debut, Anthony Marc performed encouragingly, taking 12th place.
CHAMPION TAKES THE TITLE AGAIN IN DD2 MASTER
D
espite some technical problems, Rudy Champion achieved his goal of winning the Championship for the second year in a row. After a very nice Final, he took a decisive victory while being credited with the fastest lap in the race.
PKS ALSO POWERED OTHER DRIVERS
A
ntony Billout's 4th place in Rotax Max was added to Fourquemin and Treillard de Quinemont’s double. Joran Leneutre was extremely quick in the national league, but he certainly lacked success. Nolan Lemeray set the 4th fastest time, then the fastest time of the Prefinal, before climbing from 24th to 13th in the Final. "The Laval meeting confirmed PKS Competition’s place among the top French teams," added Arnaud Sarrazin. "PKS has been competing for 25 years and we have been stepping up our involvement over the past two years while maintaining the team spirit and quality of relationships between every team member. It takes a lot of work to achieve these results, but that's what we like! We have the ambition to continue our development next season. Finally I thank Sodikart for their much appreciated support.”

VICTOR BERNIER TWO MORE PODIUMS IN F4
In Hungary, Victor Bernier made the most of his return to action. During the fifth of the seven events of the French F4 Championship, held from 6th to 8th September, he was one of the most prominent drivers on the very technical circuit of Hungaroring in Budapest.
O
n this track, used a month earlier by Formula 1, which all drivers were learning, Victor demonstrated his ability to adapt by setting the 2nd fastest time, winning his place on the

front row for Races 1 and 3. "The settings we used after Free Practice proved to be very effective. I managed to make good use of my new tyres and set several quick laps," explained Bernier.
Although he was surprised at the start of Race 1 by two other drivers, the 2018 World Junior Karting Champion was looking to recover the lost places quickly, but the rain suddenly started. "We first found ourselves behind the safety car, then the officials decided to stop the race and the classification was confirmed after the first four laps. It was a slightly shortened race. In addition to having to be satisfied with 4th place, the points were halved because of the short distance covered.

Fortunately, Race 2 was much more exciting to watch, with a dry track and a very incisive Victor Bernier. Starting in 7th place, he made a magnificent start from 7th position with superb overtaking. In the end, he won his place on the third step of the podium at the very end of the race. Victor continued his momentum in Race 3. "My line was still wet and I did not get as good a start as the drivers on the other side, so I dropped down one position on the first lap. The rest of my race was perfect, with a fast and steady pace." In addition to this new top three, Victor Bernier achieved a full house in Junior with the three victories of the meeting. He has now returned to joint 1st place, while remaining extremely close to the best in the general classification of the FFSA Academy French F4 Championship. After this flattering assessment of the Budapest race, the driver from the Loire-Atlantique will arrive at MagnyCours more motivated than ever in midSeptember for the penultimate race of the season.

PIERREFRANÇOIS DURIANI FIGHTING SPIRIT BADLY REWARDED IN BUDAPEST
Progressively more comfortable driving his French F4 Championship as the season progresses, Pierre-François Duriani was planning to take advantage of the fifth race of 2019 in Hungary to significantly increase his points total. But the Hungaroring circuit and especially the changing weather conditions revealed some pitfalls that thwarted the progress of the young Corsican hopeful.
"A
s we had to do Free Practice with worn tyres, this first session was mainly used to discover the specifics of the Budapest route," said Pierre-François. "However, it
179
KARTCOM NEWS #54
was difficult to draw conclusions for the Qualifying session, where we started with new tyres. Despite everything, I managed to attack and improve over the laps. Unfortunately, I was held up in the
traffic when my car was the most effective. I had to settle for the 13th fastest time for both Races 1 and 3, while I was just a few tenths from the top eight." Determined to take advantage of the start of Race 1 to quickly win places, he was about to overtake two drivers on the outside, when one of his opponents went off the track and sent me to the front of the group! A few laps later, the rain started to fall, causing the race to stop. For Pierre-François, a possible top ten disappeared with another unfortunate consequence, as the start of Race 2 is in
the reverse finishing order of the top ten previous one. Starting 16th, Pierre-François Duriani was satisfied with the 15th position at the finish. "I could not fight with the car, it was inefficient. We managed to improve
the settings for Race 3 and I overtook to return to 11th. I even scored a point, because the driver ranked in front of me moved out of the Championship. The young Corsican, who trained in karting with the FFSA Academy, now
wants to take advantage of the last two meetings at Magny-Cours and Paul Ricard to gain results more in line with his potential. "At Spa Francorchamps, I demonstrated being able to get into the top five. I hope to be able to quickly repeat, if not improve, this performance."

ISACK HADJAR THE LEADER OF THE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP JOINS THE TOP FIVE OVERALL
While the French F4 Championship moved to the suburbs of Budapest for the fifth of the seven events of the 2019 calendar, Isack Hadjar discovered the specifics of the Hungaroring in capricious weather. The meeting proved complex to negotiate for the winner of the Winfield Trophy, but his perseverance was finally rewarded with a remarkable entry in the top five while he strengthened his leadership among the juniors.
T
he Hungarian circuit, which has hosted Formula 1 since 1986, is known for its narrow layout and bumpy surface whose grip is often reduced by dust. Very sinuous, it does not offer many possibilities for overtaking. The hot weather of the tests then gave way to torrential rain before ending again in the dry. Tyre management added an additional challenge to the competition.

The race was interrupted on lap 5 because of the torrential rain over Budapest. He did not have the opportunity to catch up and finished in 18th position. From this far-off place he started for Race 2. Despite worn tyres, he immediately went on the attack and managed to over-
take six times to cross the finish line in 12th place at the end of a significant and rewarding recovery. Race 3 was finally been the biggest payday of the Hungarian weekend for Isack. Once again 6th on the starting grid, he managed the wear of his tyres as best as he could by alternating fast laps and decelerations to cool his tyres and keep them until the finish. At the same time, he watched his opponents in his mirrors
to stay out of their reach. Isack even managed to overtake to take 5th place under the chequered flag, relieved to have finished with this very strange race.

eshad De Gerus was fastest in the Qualifying session against Hadrien David and Jules Mettetal. These three drivers chased the win in Race 1, but De Gerus resisted their attack and flew to victory over David. Mettetal made a mistake at the finish and Nicky Hays was 3rd, followed by Victor Bernier and Gillian Henrion. Evan Spenle took advantage of the reverse grid for the top 10, to start at the front of Race 2 and clinch his first victory. The Japanese driver Kakunoshin Ota had a good performance for his first participation, taking 2nd place while Hadrien David was ahead of Victor Bernier for 3rd place after several incidents in the pack. Reshad De Gerus took his revenge from Budapest by again dominating Hadrien David in Race 3. Sten Van der Henst confirmed his speed by taking the 3rd place, not without having tried to worry David. In 4th place, Nicky Hays also achieved the fastest lap in front of Isack Hadjar, who came back well.

VICTOR BERNIER STILL AMONG THE BEST IN F4 AT MAGNY-COURS
Over several races Victor Bernier has significantly increased his points total in the French F4 Championship and the Magny-Cours event allowed him to continue this momentum. At a meeting at the end of the season, the French hopeful has a place in the final top five in his sights and the title of French Junior Champion. "It's true that this weekend at Magny-Cours was positive, both in terms of results in Qualifying and in the races, as well as in points earned. I also took the opportunity to win two of the three races in Junior," said Victor.

t all started with a Free Practice session in which Victor Bernier did not feel completely at ease. Serious and applied, he then found an excellent setup for the Qualifying session with the staff of the FFSA Academy. The work paid off and the 2018 World Junior Karting Champion was among the fastest. "I ended up 7th for Saturday's Race 1, but the gaps were so small that I was less than a tenth away from 3rd." His timing also gave him 4th place in the Race 3 on Sunday, with

a 2nd time almost the same as his best, within 4 thousandths! Very quickly into action at the start of Race 1, Victor immediately gained a place and tucked into the slipstream of the leading group. Three laps later, he reached 5th place after a great overtaking manoeuvre and found himself 4th on the finish line, which meant victory in Junior. But above all, his lap times were particularly fast. Starting 7th in Race 2 with a reverse grid, Victor fought in a particularly chaotic field. Serene and effective, he gained three places and again took 4th position and another success in Junior. "It's the 9th of the season! It's always a pleasure to be on the podium and to thank everyone who supports me." Unfortunately, an early start ruined his efforts in Race 3. "In fact, the car moved slightly just before the lights went out! On the other hand, in addition to taking the lead of the French Junior Championship, I scored 22 points during this weekend at Magny-Cours, so that the 4th and 5th places are now within my reach." The talent and determination of Victor Bernier will both be assets in finishing the Championship well in October on the Paul Ricard circuit.

SMALL HARVEST IN BURGUNDY FOR
PIERREFRANÇOIS DURIANI In a French F4 Championship at a very high level this season, Pierre-François Duriani is displaying a level of performance increasing at every race for his first season in single-seaters.
"U
nlike many of my opponents in F4, I did not have the opportunity to race in karting at the international level, but my training with the FFSA Academy has allowed me to make great progress," says Pierre-François. "I am now much more competitive than at the beginning of the year, especially in racing. I am a fighter and I constantly aim for the

top of the standings. The Qualifying sessions are still my weak point, which prevents me from fighting for better places."
during the Qualifying session, but I was losing too much time in the last sector." Fortunately, Pierre-François was to be one of the most combative drivers of Race 1. Climbing from 14th to 11th place, he was even be close to entering the top 10, but a small mistake stopped him. "It's a shame, because 10th place means pole position in Race 2."
The analysis of the young Corsican driver was verified at Magny-Cours, during the penultimate race of the season. "A 14th place on the starting grid is obviously not what I was hoping for. My pace was good
Far from giving up, however, Pierre-François returned to attack the chasing pack and gain more places in Race 2, which he finished in 9th position. Unfortunately, his recovery in Race 3 ended much too early.
"I had a good start and was determined to gain places. But at a corner, the driver ahead of me suddenly under-steered. As I was at his side on the outside, I could do nothing to avoid it. We touched and my race stopped there, on the fourth lap."
Obviously, Pierre-Franรงois Duriani hoped to collect more than two points at Magny-Cours. His eyes are now turned towards the final of the French F4 Championship scheduled from 11th to 13th October on the Paul Ricard circuit at Le
Castellet. "The good thing is that I'll be able to take advantage of the two "joker" tyres we have for the season, while many of my opponents have already used them. To conclude with a good result would be ideal before the off-season."

F4 IN WINFIELD COLOURS AT THE HEART OF THE BATTLE The drivers supported by the Winfield Racing School played a major role in the two events of the French F4 Championship in Budapest (6th-8th September) and Magny-Cours (13th-15th September). They took podiums in both cases, while the top three in the general classification is gradually emerging in this top level international competition. Jules Mettetal and Nicky Hays are already looking forward to confirming the competitiveness shown this season at the last event at the Paul Ricard circuit in October 2019. For his part, Isack Hadjar will fight for the French F4 Junior Championship and will try to consolidate his place in the top five overall.

HAYS BACK IN BUDAPEST
C
hanging weather was waiting for the drivers on the Hungaroring for Race 1, while Qualifying had enjoyed a beautiful sunny day. Starting 3rd, but very quickly on the tail of the leader Hadrien David, Nicky Hays seemed determined to try his luck when the rain began to fall quite heavily, with the cars on slick tyres. The Race Director then issued the red flag at the end of lap 5, confirming the order on the previous lap and halving the number of points scored. "It's always good to be on the second step of the podium," admitted the young American, "but it's frustrating to not have been able to fight for the win to the end." In Race 2, starting with an inverted grid for the top 10, the fighting spirit of the Winfield-coloured drivers was unquestionably confirmed. They also achieved the two best laps in the race on a track that was still wet in places, with Nicky Hays on 1'52"967 and Jules Mettetal on 1'53"051. Jules scored points in 5th place, while Nicky gained a position and finished 8th. Unlucky in Hungary on Saturday, Isack Hadjar finally demonstrated his real potential in Race 3. The winner of the Winfield Trophy drove a strong attacking race which ended in a 5th place in front of Nicky Hays.
promising result was confirmed during the official Qualifying. Close to the pace, Jules Mettetal reached 3rd position on the grid for Race 1, three thousandths in front of Nicky Hays. The two drivers regretted dropping back respectively to 5th and 7th for the start of Race 3, decided by their 2nd fastest times . "I had already noticed this too big gap between my two fastest laps in Hungary, and it's something I need to improve in the future," said Nicky. The three races of the weekend in Burgundy would however allow the incisive American to register significant points in the Championship with successive 3rd, 5th and 4th places. He also took the lap record in the last race, while regretting the safety car period. "With the Winfield staff, we made the decision to mount the two new tyres that the FFSA Academy has made available to us once in the season. Unfortunately, this interruption slowed down the dynamics of this strategy. Too bad, because the pace that I was able to hold shows that another podium was within my reach, even a win!" As for Jules Mettetal, he confessed to a small mistake with serious consequences in Race 1. "I was on the verge of getting on the podium. It's very frustrating, especially as it would have made me bet-
ter placed in Race 2." The 2019 Winfield Volant winner regained confidence in Race 3, finishing 6th in the wake of Isack Hadjar. Hadjar, who is about to celebrate his 15th birthday, missed out on success in Race 2 while leading the Junior rankings and was fighting to get on the podium with a very high level of performance. After an accident that wasn't his fault, he was forced to retire. His victory in Junior in the final race allows him to keep his hopes for the title in this category alive.
FINAL PODIUM IN SIGHT "The French F4 Championship ends in mid-October at Paul Ricard. I hope that the drivers we support finish in style at this event, which is a home race for us, close to our offices and our international racing school. We hope to see Jules on the podium. Nicky is in a solid 3rd place overall and we are counting on him to confirm this excellent ranking. As for Isack, he has shown high potential throughout the season and to see him crowned in Junior would be a great reward," concluded FrĂŠdĂŠric Garcia, President of the Winfield Group.

his year Theo was racing with Ralf Schumacher’s US Racing CHRS team in the German F4 Championship, organised by the ADAC. The
French F4 Junior Champion last year, the young 16-year-old driver completed a second season in single-seaters, showing great maturity, combining speed and consistency at the front of the field. Theo has taken four victories, along with eight podiums, this season and finished in the top 10 16 times out of the 20 races on the calendar. "Arriving at the Sachsenring was not easy after the Hockenheim weekend, which did not go very well. I was only one point ahead and I had to concentrate on winning the title ahead of Hauger. It was my goal and I reached it! Everyone on the
team is happy, my family too, which is great!" Theo said. Very determined, he first took a double pole position in Qualifying and was 2nd in Race 1. Theo went on the attack in Race 2 to clinch a major victory in terms of points. In a very competitive Race 3, it was enough for him to mount the second step of the podium to fulfill his mission and become the ADAC F4 Champion of 2019. In the US Racing CHRS team, there was maximum satisfaction with its four drivers finishing in the top six, the team victory, the title for Pourchaire and for Roman
Stanek in Junior. Theo warmly thanks Ralf Schumacher and Gerhard Ungar for the exceptional work by the team throughout the season and for their very effective coaching. Also supported by Julien Abelli’s Simumotion operation, at the beginning of the year Theo joined the Sauber Junior Team whose support was essential for the ADAC F4 Championship win. The young Champion's 2020 programme is not yet fixed, but F3 would be one of the best ways forward for his career.
