HIGH EXPECTATIONS ALREADY FOR 2020 The WSK has just finished the international season with the second round of the WSK Open Cup in Castelletto and the WSK Final Cup in Adria, two rather cool and damp weekends which nevertheless allowed for some category and/or team defectors. Several Junior drivers have already taken the step to OK, the OK World Champion Lorenzo Travisanutto has left Dino Chiesa's fold to join the factory Tony Kart team alongside Pedro Hiltbrand. Harry Thompson made his KZ2 debut with KR Motorsport.

T

he rejuvenation of the KZ category seen this year is likely to continue in 2020. After Marco Ardigo's retirement in September, Anthony Abbasse also left racing, as apparently has Paolo De Conto. Will the professional category continue to expand, or more accurately, will the main factories continue to field professional or semi-professional drivers to ensure a solid base for the KZ field? There will be no lack of international high-level competitions in 2020. FIA Karting, WSK Promotion, Champions of the Future by RGMMC, the DKM German Championship... the calendar is likely to be very busy for those who want to be present on all fronts.

In France, the FFSA has renewed its karting service and the new team has already embarked on its complex task with new ambitions. We wish them all the energy they need to fulfil their mission, as French karting needs to regain its former glory. Efforts will initially focus on the aficionados of the French Endurance Championship in order to attract them back to the track. The season ended with the traditional awards ceremonies, moments of conviviality that encouraged exchanges between all members of the sporting community. In Paris, the FIA, FIA Karting and FFSA kept their promises within a few days of each other, despite numerous transport difficulties due to industrial action. We will also keep an

ROTAX FRANCE CHOOSES THE MOJO FOR 2020

THE FRENCH CRG IMPORTERSHIP GOES TO LOMMERANGE

"After two years with the Bridgestone YLM tyre, Rotax France has decided to use the new Mojo D5 CIK and Mojo W5 CIK tyres for brand cups for Rotax Max / Max Master and Rotax DD2 / DD2 Master in 2020."

The Lommerange Karting Track now officially manages the distribution of CRG products in France through SARL Deveen France.

"T

he Mojo D5 has already proven its worth at major international events such as the RMC Grand Finals, RMC International Trophy and the Euro Trophy. It was very well received and appreciated by the drivers. It is a very powerful slick tyre, as well as being constant and very durable. It enables a very good balance for the chassis and great ease of use." "The Mojo W5 is the latest addition to the Mojo range. The result of several years of research, this wet tyre offers very high performance and ease of use."

AVAILABILITY OF VEGA FFSA KARTING TYRES IN 2020 The manufacturer Vega, chosen by the FFSA to equip all federal categories from 2020 to 2022 except Endurance and Superkart, has announced that its tyres will gradually be available in different points of sale as of 2nd December, 2019. They can then be used for test sessions, but will only be usable in competition from 1st January 2020.

T

his is the successor of the famous Cadetti, approved by the CIK-FIA for the Mini class. This tyre, common to both federal categories for young drivers, will allow France to share its choice with many other countries. The FFSA has chosen a single tyre for the National, Senior, Master, Gentleman, KZ2, KZ2 Master and KZ2 Gentleman categories. These are the VEGA XH3 (slick) "Option" and the Vega W6 rain tyres, newly approved by the CIK-FIA for the 2020-2022 period. These tyres have qualities of performance and versatility that can satisfy a wide range of competitors, particularly in KZ2. On the other hand, the German manufacturer MOJO was selected to supply the tyres for the French Endurance Championship.

KARTCOM NEWS #56

FFSA MINIME/CADET CHASSIS

- Complete FFSA-homologated chassis (presented in its global FFSA homologation form). - 2020 Technical freedoms : Free hubs. Free rear axle shaft. Mounting of CIK-FIA approved bodywork and bumpers authorised.

REGULATORY CLARIFICATIONS

- The use of the following materials is prohibited: magnesium, carbon, titanium, ceramic... Examples of prohibition: magnesium hubs and rims, carbon seat, titanium parts, ceramic brake disc...

On Wednesday, 20th November, the FFSA Executive Committee validated the CNK's proposals concerning Minime/Cadet chassis from 2020.

T

he aim was to take into account the new international CIK-FIA homologation of the Mini class. In France, the FFSA Minime/Cadet and CIK-FIA Mini chassis will coexist without problems from the 2020 season, with an adjustment of the technical freedoms for FFSA chassis compared to CIK-FIA chassis. The Minime/Cadet engines remain identical to the FFSA regulations in force for the 2018-2022 period.

Here are the chassis configurations that will be able to take part in French competitions in the Minime and Cadet categories from 2020 onwards:

MINI CIK-FIA CHASSIS - CIK-FIA-homologated chassis. - CIK-FIA-homologated brake. - CIK-FIA-homologated bodywork.

Examples of approvals: aluminium hubs and rims, fibreglass seat, magnetic steel brake disc - The rear axle shaft used on the chassis does not necessarily have to come from the same manufacturer as the chassis itself. - The combination of the three CIK-FIA approved bodywork elements (front fairing, front panel, side pods) of different makes or models is permitted, but the two side pods must be used together. - As a reminder, the FFSA and CIK-FIA chassis do not have an end date of homologation in France.

FIRST ECONOMIC BAROMETER OF MOTOR SPORT The Minister of Sport, Roxana Maracineanu, the President of the French Motorcycle Federation, Jacques Bolle, the President of the French Motor Sport Federation, Nicolas Deschaux and the President of the National Group of Automobile Circuits and Industrial Test Centres, JeanPierre Mougin, organised the presentation of the 1st Motor Sport Economic Barometer produced by EY on Tuesday 26th November 2019 at the premises of the Automobile Club de France (Paris).

T

his study, carried out within the framework of the Observatory of the Economy of Sport of the Ministry of Sport, is part of the process of structuring the sports economic sector promoted by the State since 2015 to better value the economic stakeholders of sport and strengthen their competitiveness on an international level.

A MAJOR ECONOMIC AND SPORTS SECTOR IN FRANCE

Thanks to its activity, the motorsport ecosystem has an estimated added value of 510 million euros. Manufacturers represent 39% of the total turnover of motorsport and more than half of the sector's jobs (7,200). Finally, the sector contributes to public finances. The amount of tax and social contributions paid by its participants is estimated at â‚Ź233 mil-

A SECTOR ROOTED IN FRENCH LIFE AND THAT OF THE TERRITORIES

E

very year, 1,600 clubs and associations throughout France organise around 2,300 events in each of the 47 motorsport disciplines, with a total of 160,000 members. About 130,000 people participate in the organisation of these events each year throughout the country. The circuits and venues represent 28% of the sector's turnover. The territory has more than a thousand venues for a total number of 2,800 jobs. They contribute to France's international influence thanks in particular to the major competitions and world-class reputation of the events that take place there (24 Hours of Le

Mans, French F1 and Moto Grands Prix, Enduropale du Touquet Pas-de-Calais, Rallye de France WRC, WRX Lohéac...). A total of 1.4 million people attend these major events each year.

Motorsport tourism has strong growth potential. For example, the tourism impact of the 2018 F1 French Grand Prix was estimated at €46 million.

A full-scale laboratory for manufacturers to experiment and develop industry responses to ecological, digital and mobility issues. Symbols of this transformation: the Formula E World Championship, the hybridisation of F1 and WRC, the new WEC regulations (24 Hours of Le Mans) with electrification as well as the launch in 2019 of the FIM MotoE World Cup and the FIM Trial-E Cup.

his study shows that motorsport stakeholders occupy a special place in the economic sector of sport. They are historically and naturally closely linked to the industrial sector from which they come. As a follow-up to this study and according to the Minister's roadmap, the heads of networks in this sector aim to continue structuring their sector by creating a "motorsports collective" that will be integrated with the Sport Sector.

Mrs Roxana Maracineanu, Minister of Sports: "I am pleased that the Ministry of Sports is supporting the motorsports sector in defining the economic impact of a sector with exceptional dynamism and territorial coverage. I have confidence in this field of excellence, with innovation in its DNA, to meet a twofold challenge: that of the environmental emergency and that of the safety of both practitioners and spectators."

Mr Jacques Bolle, President of the French Motorcycle Federation: "This economic barometer of motorsports is a first and constitutes a fundamental and decisive element to enhance and promote our activities; rich in their diversity and armed to face new challenges."

Mr Nicolas Deschaux, President of the French Motor Sport Federation: "As President of the FFSA, I wish to continue to act on behalf of the players in our sector by supporting their dynamism while fully meeting our economic, societal and environmental challenges."

Mr Jean-Pierre Mougin, President of the National Group of Automobile Circuits and Industrial Test Centres: "The GN CACEIPA, which brings together almost all of the French car and motorcycle circuits as well as the industrial

test centres, was strongly involved in this study, which highlights the importance of the motorsports sector in France, both through the jobs it generates and through its economic and fiscal impact and through the number of associations and volunteers who run it throughout the country."

Mr Marc Lhermitte, Partner at EY: "This first barometer tells the story of a surprising economy, beyond the major sporting events that symbolise it, through the incredible variety of activities and their industrial and technological reality.

Powerfully relayed by the media and social networks, motorsports also have a very local foothold, via the 2,300 events that link the territory, with their multiple economic, tourism and tax benefits."

ALEXANDRA HERVÉ A POSITIVE RESULT IN 2019

Alexandra Hervé, who graduated from the Cadet category in 2018, has successfully progressed to the top categories this year. However, the move was not easy, with more powerful equipment and experienced rivals.

A

lexandra first discovered OKJunior during the FFSA Academy French Junior Championship. Thanks to the training provided by the federation coaches, she was able to start scoring her first points as early as mid-season. Always supported by Didier Blot's MATEC Competition structure, Alexandra immediately appreciated the performance of the X30 Senior karts. She was delighted to finish in the top 10 of the Ladies Cup organised by IAME Series France on the very fast circuit of Varennes sur Allier.

"I immediately felt comfortable in the X30 Senior. The standard is very high, my rivals often have much more experience than me, but I like the power of the engine and the grip of the tyres. This is better for my driving style and enables me to achieve better results. In addition to another season with the FFSA Academy, I will be racing in Senior more often next year. It will also be a good way to prepare for the French Women's Championship, which is now reserved for X30 Senior engines," said the young Valdoisienne, who is eager to compete in the 2020 season.

LATEST FFSA DECISIONS CONCERNING KARTING NOVEMBER 2019 On 30th October 2019, the National Karting Commission (CNK) adopted a series of proposals from the CNK itself and from the various Working Groups. These decisions were definitively validated by the FFSA Executive Committee held in Paris on 20th November, 2019. Their application will be effective from 1st January 2020.

STARTING ENGINES

In order to limit noise pollution and increase safety, the regulations concerning the starting of CIK-FIA engines will be applied: starting, heating and running in of engines is strictly prohibited in the Paddock under penalty. (CIK-FIA General Requirements, Sporting Requirements, Article 2.14 General Safety, paragraph Q).

LENGTH OF GENTLEMAN RACES

To adapt the races to Gentleman drivers aged 45 and over, the length of the Final phases will be reduced by 5 km during the French Championships and Cups.

ROOKIE RANKING IN MINIME, CADET AND NATIONAL

In order to promote new participants in the French Minime, Cadet and National Championships and Cups, a Rookie ranking will be set up for drivers participating in each category for the first time.

TEST DAY

Circuits hosting a French Championship or Cup must reserve, during the month preceding the event, at least one Saturday or Sunday for the participants' testing.

BALLAST

In order to harmonise the positioning and fastening of weights on the karts, the CIK-FIA Technical Regulations (article 2.4-3) will now be applied.

KART SAFETY

- The two rear protection fixing brackets must be parallel vertically and at 90° to the frame tube. - The seat fixing bolts and rear protection can be freely tightened. However, the latter must not be able to move laterally under any circumstances.

CHASSIS PROTECTION

In order to extend the life of the tubes, the use of chassis protection is allowed.

CREATION OF "DIVISION 2" RACES

To attract as many drivers as possible who have not yet taken the step or to facilitate their return to competition, test races will be held during clearly identified "club races" during the 2020 season, particularly in the Aquitaine League and the ĂŽle-de-France League.

CHARLES LECLERC KARTING COMPETITION DEPARTMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE TEAM LENNOX RACING

Not long ago, Charles Leclerc announced the launch of his own range of kart chassis, produced in the Birel ART factory. The news has made a big impact in the industry and beyond thanks to the incredible popularity of the Monegasque prodigy whose recent exploits at the wheel of his Ferrari F1 have delighted motorsport enthusiasts around the world.

ccording to Charles' wishes, the chassis bearing his colours need to shine in competition in order to broaden their audience and at-

tract as many drivers as possible. Since the launch of this great adventure, Birel ART had decided to equip the Charles Leclerc brand with its own racing depart-

ment as soon as possible. The choice quickly turned to the Lennox Racing team, led by a 27-year-old Briton, Jordon Lennox Lamb, a former top-level driver and dynamic team manager. "I have always had a good relationship with Birel ART and in particular with Ronni Sala," Jordon said. "In my career, I have driven Lissone chassis on many occasions. In particular, I achieved one of my best results, vice-World KF Champion in 2015 at La Conca, at the wheel of an official Birel ART. This cannot be

For the past two years, despite his youth, he has established himself as one of the most competent team managers. In particular, he knows how to train young drivers in all aspects of today's racing." "I know Jordon well because I have faced him many times in karting," said Charles Leclerc. "I have always appreciated his very competitive spirit and his desire to win. I am delighted that my race department is under the responsibility of a young and dynamic team manager like him." Under the Charles Leclerc chassis banner, the Lennox Racing team, based in Lonato (ITA) will compete in a full international season in 2020 with the full support of the Birel ART factory. The list of its drivers will be announced soon. The Lennox Racing team also distributes Charles Leclerc chassis in Italy.

A NEW ERA FOR THE FRENCH

ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP The FFSA has taken over the reins of the French Endurance Championship for 2020 with the aim of restoring the attractiveness that this important discipline deserves for karting. The idea is to return to the simplicity that in its time allowed Endurance to bring together many participants thanks to an incomparable ratio of driving time to cost, the pleasure of team racing always being at the forefront. For this reason, several important changes have been decided for next season in consultation with the professionals and regulars of Endurance Karting.

A MORE CONCENTRATED CHAMPIONSHIP

I

n order to relaunch the Championship on a secure basis, firstly it has decided to organise the French Endurance Championship over three events.

10th-11th April: Le Mans (72) 6 hours in semi-night ----------------------------------

15th-16th May: Anneville-Ambourville (76),

or reasons of budget and fairness, OK and OK-Junior engines are no longer part of the Endurance landscape. The selected engines are more economical and widespread throughout the country. For the Elite and Espoir categories, the number of relays is no longer counted, but a maximum driving time of 40 minutes per relay will be introduced. - Elite: for drivers aged 14 and over, the Federal Senior category and the 2020 FFSA approved brand cup karts with 125cc 2-stroke engines without gearbox (Rotax Max, X30 Senior) will compete in the Elite category.

NEW AND MORE AFFORDABLE CATEGORIES

- Espoir: the National category, and the karts of the approved 2020 FFSA brand cups with 125cc 2-stroke engines without gearbox (X30 Junior, KFS 100) are grouped together for drivers from 12

years old in the Espoir category. The French Minime/Cadet Endurance Championship will be renewed on the same basis as before with some modifications. There will be the introduction of a minimum time in the pits, the number of driver changes goes from three to five and the maximum driving time per relay goes from 25 minutes to 20 minutes.

MORE MEDIA COVERAGE

T

he French Endurance Championship will now receive the same media coverage as the other French Karting Championships. In addition to the allocation for the French Champions at the end of the

season, an allocation of tyres will be made as follows at the end of each event: One set of tyres for the top four in the

Elite category One set of tyres for the winner of the

Espoir category One set of tyres drawn at random among the other competitors

GREAT PROGRESS IN 2019 FOR

ENZO CALDARAS How much progress has been made since his debut in the Kart Racing Academy in 2015... Enzo Caldaras then made his debut in the Minime category in 2016, then in Cadet with a 4th place in the NSK championship the following year. In 2019, he joined Dominique Chech's KPR team with a more extensive programme, particularly in the National category.

6

th in the French Championship at Salbris and 8th in the NSK Championship, Enzo also discovered international competition. He was particularly visible at Le Mans during the new Rotax Max Challenge International Trophy with his 12th Final position among 84 drivers from 26 countries. Present at the start of the IAME International Final, he qualified in 26th place out of 108 X30

Junior participants. He continued with the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals on the Italian circuit of Sarno. Again, he qualified for the Final and climbed from 37th fastest to 26th among the 72 best Rotax Junior drivers in the world. "I'm very happy to have made such progress this season," said Enzo. "I have learned a lot by racing with the KPR team

NEWS many times. The confrontation with drivers used to international competition was very rewarding for me. The races are harder than in France, you really have to fight every minute. I'm still a little too inexperienced, but I'm getting tougher! I feel that 2020 will be an important year thanks to an intense and varied programme.” Enzo is 100% passionate about karting and does not hide his thirst for learning and is participating in the French Junior Championship next year. In this privileged setting, he will drive a more powerful OK-Junior kart and will benefit from the renowned guidance of the FFSA Academy. He will also take part in the National category events and will compete in a few races in X30 Junior. "I am fortunate to have many strong partners who believe in me and support my progress. This is an important element in achieving my goal of becoming a motor sport professional in the future. I thank them from the bottom of my heart.” Speed Metal - SMD deserves special thanks as he has believed in Enzo since his debut in competition and continues to actively support him. Interview with

RICKARD KAELL "SAUBER'S PROGRAMME REALLY MAKES SENSE"

Like many technicians working for a large international team, Rickard Kaell (45 years old) started in karting as a driver. The Swede reached the top level and had the honour of winning a European Formula Super A Championship event in 1996, during the Italian Grand Prix at Lonato. Subsequently, his professional career has led him to work with many teams. In 2019, he took on new responsibilities as team manager of the Sauber Karting Academy. Rickard Kaell, we have the impression that we have been meeting you in the karting paddocks for about thirty years. Is that correct? Yes, that's about right! I started my karting career in my country, Sweden, at

47

KARTCOM NEWS #56

the age of 11. I competed in my first international race in Pomposa at the Junior World Cup in 1988. So that was 31 years ago! I climbed the ladder to Formula Super A by becoming an official driver for the PCR team, which was a prestigious brand in the 80s and 90s. I finished 5th in the European Championship in 1996. I worked with Pantano, Quintarelli, Manetti and Rossi. It

was a beautiful time. I retired in 2000, when water-cooled engines appeared.

For you, was it natural to stay in the karting business? Yes, completely. I am one of those great enthusiasts who are happy when they are in the paddock and when they can see exciting kart races from the inside. First I created my own team, Italsport. I gained my reputation by assisting the Briton Jamie Green, who then had a great career in single-seater racing. Together, we won a European Formula A Championship event at Valencia, the year the title was decided between drivers like Hamilton, Kubica, Rosberg, Piccione, Duval

and Ardigo! Then Paul Di Resta, then a future Formula 1 driver, joined me and we achieved another excellent result. How did the collaboration with Dino Chiesa come about? After PCR, I also worked with the Birel factory, before Dino presented me with a project with the LH brand that Anthony Hamilton, Lewis' father, wanted to launch and develop. My best memory of this period is the 2012 Macau Grand Prix in Macau that British driver Tom Joyner won, which allowed him to become World Vice-Champion. When the LH team had to finish, I wanted to continue with Dino Chiesa. He's someone I respect very much. For me, he's the best technician in the paddock. He knows how to listen to drivers, mechanics and team managers, and then make the best decisions. We shared the Zanardi-Strakka Racing adventure, this time with the title of KF World Champion for Joyner in 2013. You definitely like to be around F1 names, as we have seen you with the Ricciardo Kart brand... When Dino Chiesa returned to CRG to take over the responsibility of the competition department, I participated in the launch of the Ricciardo Kart chassis with the official team. It allowed me to discover something else, to take on a new

48

INTERVIEW challenge. But when Dino created Kart Republic, he called me and I naturally agreed. We get along very well, he trusts me and it works perfectly between us. The KR brand was another success!

Rosberg then Sauber, again close to Formula 1... I think it's a good thing that F1 teams are investing in karting and helping young drivers climb to the top of the pyramid. In 2018, the creation of the Rosberg Racing Academy with KR chassis and IAME engines left its mark on people's minds. We finished the year with the World Championship in OK for Lorenzo Travisanutto and 4th place in OK-Junior for Taylor Barnard. Then, at the beginning of 2019, when the Sauber Junior Team wanted to get involved in karting, Dino Chiesa immediately told me about it. I met with Frédéric Vasseur and Alessandro Alunni Bravi, two people I had already known for a few years. By the time we got everything in place, we missed the first preparatory events, but we were ready for the first European Championship competition in Angerville. On this occasion, Dexter Patterson won the Final.

49

KARTCOM NEWS #56

What is your assessment of this experience? Overall, it was a good first year of collaboration. We also ran the Swiss driver Joshua Dufek, who made great progress in 2019. He wasn’t missing much to be a title winner compared to Patterson, and he finished 3rd in the European Championship and 6th in the World Championship in OK. He will be racing in a single-seater next year. Singaporean Christian Ho joined the team at the end of the season in OK-Junior. We also closely followed the promising Briton William Macintyre, who competed in the Mini class in 2019 and is about to enter the OK-Junior category. The year 2020 is looking very promising, and we will have a solid team to face the new season.

In addition to the results, what is Sauber's philosophy? The objective of this partnership is to participate in the training of drivers, to prepare them as well as possible for cars and to help them when possible in terms of financing. For karting, it is positive to see such channels being set up. We have a lot of talented kart drivers so identifying them and sup-

porting them in their careers remains an excellent initiative. It is a good solution for those who do not necessarily have large amounts of money to spend on cars. It's motivating for the most deserving drivers. In my opinion, this programme set up by Sauber really makes sense.

On a more personal level, did you enjoy your involvement? Yes, I like that part. Although I am mainly assigned to the Sauber Karting Team, I have many discussions with Dino Chiesa on all the other subjects: equipment, technique, strategy, driver management, etc. There is a great dynamic at the moment with all the teams working under the colours of Kart Republic and using KR chassis and IAME engines. In the end, everyone progresses and the drivers all have something to gain. It gives everyone the same opportunity. Then, of course, it is up to the driver to make a difference on the track.

KARTCOM NEWS #56

Info KARTCOM - Renaud Didier © Photo KSP - Philippe Kalmès

Interview with

DAVIDE FORE’ "MY PROFESSIONAL FUTURE IS NOW MY PRIORITY"

Davide Fore’ is a great personality in the karting world. Four-time World Champion between 1998 and 2006, several times the World Cup winner in 100cc and KF1 in Japan or in Super ICC, he has shown an incredible commitment to karting. Having been team manager for Birel ART for more than a year and now a driver coach, he continues to race whenever he has the opportunity. Despite his 45 years of age, he didn't want to miss the 2019 KZ World Championship in Lonato, a stone's throw from his home... Taking part in the World Championship this year was particularly close to your heart, wasn't it? As soon as I was informed of the 2019 FIA Karting calendar, I immediately

thought about participating in this competition. I had just started karting when the South Garda Karting circuit was created in the late 1980s in the Brescia region, where I live. I raced on the track a lot, I spent an incredible amount of time there, and I saw the evolution of the site. I never imagined

I would experience the return of a World Championship to Lonato without taking part as a driver. I had participated in the previous one, in 1996!

How was your participation organised? It was not necessarily easy, as I no longer belong to a particular team since I left my position as team manager with the Birel ART Racing Team. Initially, I was thinking of racing with TK Racing. But for various reasons, the project suddenly ended. I was able to reach an agreement with the Intrepid team and the TM factory for the engines. I thank them for that, as well as all the people who supported me and enabled this participation.

52

INTERVIEW Unfortunately, the result was not up to your expectations.... The standard was still incredibly high this year. I realised that it was very difficult to join a team for such a competition, without having been able to race together in other events to start the preparatory work. I didn't have a sufficient understanding of the equipment to compete with the most well practiced. I would have needed to achieve a time in the top 10 in timed practice to aim for a better place. On several occasions, I was still able to get within two-tenths of the fastest. I gained seven places in the Final to join the top 20 on Sunday. This presence as a driver will remain a great feeling. My family came, I met many friends and I thank the Corberi family for the tribute they paid to Marco Ardigo and myself during the drivers' presentation.

How did you prepare physically for this great event? I already play sports regularly. I never stopped training, even when I wasn't racing. Having a good physique

53

KARTCOM NEWS #56

is essential for me. I often run and complete my preparation with various fitness sessions. I'm not 20 anymore and if I want to stay at the front throughout a competition and a Final, I have no choice. In the months following the competition in Lonato, we could see that this World Championship was not your last race... Exactly! Exactly! I didn't forget about racing. Racing is a big part of my life and I don't want it to stop, at least not now. Today, I am still competitive, I have the motivation and the desire. So I will take part in competitions as long as I have the opportunity. At the end of the 2019 season, I had the opportunity to step on to the podium in Malaysia on the Langkawi circuit and take part in a race in Macau. However, I must admit that my professional future remains my priority from now on.

What is your new job? I work with drivers to help them progress. The younger ones want to go fast and climb the ladder quickly, but they lack experience and find their ascent limited. I am here to help them understand all the subtleties of kar-

ting so that they can perform better on the track, so that they can better assimilate the technical aspect of the discipline, so that they understand the importance of good physical fitness and so that they are able to manage the entire race. Being a coach is not for everyone but I think I have enough reference points to do my job well. Recently, I was with the Moroccan Suleiman Zanfari when he became Swedish Champion and the American Connor Zilisch when he finished 2nd in the Supernationals in Las Vegas.

In more than 30 years of your career, if you had to keep only one of your many trophies, which one would it be? Difficult question, I've had so many great moments! The emotions are different depending on the team around you, the circuit where you win, the conditions in which you mount the top step of the podium. But I remain very proud of my first World Championship. It was in 1998 in Ugento in the top category of the time, Formula Super A.

orenzo Travisanutto (Tony Kart/Vortex) had done most of the work in the rain by achieving pole position, winning the heats and then winning his Prefinal. His new team-mate Joseph Turney (Tony Kart/Vortex) was once again a formidable opponent by lining up in 2nd place while Kirill Smal (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Josep Marti Sobrepera (Tony Kart/Vortex) had an outside chance. Hiltbrand had the 11th fastest time, 8th at the end of the heats and took 5th place in Prefinal B before letting his talent explode during a Final finally run on slick tyres. Hugo Sasse (Parolin/TM) missed his start from the first row, while Travisanutto and Hiltbrand competed for the lead. Hiltbrand never gave up and managed to win 2'' in front of Turney and 4.5'' in front of Travisanutto. Thomas Ten Brinke (FA Kart/Vortex) made his OK debut with 4th place ahead of Juho Valtanen (KR/Iame). PREPARATION FOR 2020 ALREADY IN PROGRESS AT

RFM

The last two international competitions of the season were a week apart, both taking place in Italy and both started with rain. Ricky Flynn Motorsport took advantage of both events to continue setting up the team for the 2020 season on the heels of its 2019 success.

T

he second round of the WSK Open Cup at Castelletto and the WSK Final Cup at Adria did not benefit from good weather conditions due to heavy rain and often limited grip. Despite these inconveniences, the drivers were able to expand their skill set while preparing for next year. Two RFM Junior drivers made their debut in the top category. Thomas Ten Brinke, the 2019 Junior World Champion, quickly found his mark in OK. He set the 3rd fastest time in Qualifying at Castelletto before finishing in 7th place in the Final, which put him in the top 10 of the WSK Open Cup. Starting from a distant 26th at Adria, he regained ground in the final stages with a 5th place finish in the

Prefinal and a 4th in the Final. Laurens Van Hoepen performed well in both WSK Open Cup round heats, but then had problems in the final stages. He made up for it at Adria by gaining 12 places on the almost dry track of the Final and returned to the top 10. A Portuguese driver trained in Rotax, Guilherme De Oliveira tried out the OK category with RFM at Adria. Although 43rd at the end of the heats, he managed to qualify after a good Prefinal, but had to retire halfway through the Final. Unsatisfied with his results at Lonato, Ugo Ugochukwu raised his game at Castelletto. After strong heats, he won his Prefinal and finished 4th in the

Final, which allowed him to gain 10 places to 4th place in the WSK Open Cup. He confirmed his form the following week at Adria, also moving up to 4th in the Final. Starting from a distance in the Castelletto Qualifying, Conrad Laursen first came back to 21st in the heats before gaining another eight places in the Final. The young Dane made a solid run in the rain at Adria, but the Final on a dry track was less successful and he had to settle for 20th place. Coming from Singapore, Dion Gowda moved up from Mini to the OK-Junior category in the RFM colours, but could not repeat his successful qualification for the Final at Lonato. Also present in the British team were Rintaro Sato (JPN) and Sonny Smith (GBR) at Castelletto and Emerson Fittipaldi at Adria. Ricky Flynn's team is now gearing up for next season's active preparation with a new line-up and a lot of practice ahead of the first competition of 2020, the WSK Champions Cup, at the end of January at Adria.

RAFAEL VILLAGOMEZ RECOGNISED BY THE RICHARD MILLE YOUNG TALENT ACADEMY IN LE MANS

114

CARS

Held in difficult weather conditions, the second Richard Mille Young Talent Academy highlighted Mexico's Rafael Villagomez among the 17 young talents gathered at Le Mans. After rigorous physical, mental and sporting evaluations, Rafael made the difference with his ability to progress, suggesting excellent potential in motor sport. Richard Mille has shown his confidence in him by offering him the chance to participate in the 2020 French F4 Championship.

A

manda Mille, Director of Customer Marketing, praised all the participants before revealing the name of the winner: "The constant fog on the Bugatti circuit made the young drivers task particularly difficult. We were pleasantly surprised by their seriousness and motivation in these harsh conditions. Despite the changes we have had to make to the programme, they have all demonstrated great abilities and I am sure they have a bright future ahead of them. The jury was unanimous in selecting Rafael Villagomez, a promising talent who has shown strong potential for adaptation and progress in every circumstance. With no experience in motor racing, he was able to significantly improve his lap times despite the reduced visibility. His performances, among the fastest at the end of the day, completed an already very

positive physical and mental assessment. We are delighted to support him in 2020 in the French F4 Championship and in the longer term, if he fulfils the hopes we place in him." As the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy rule states, the commonality between the 17 drivers aged 14 to 18, from 14 nations and four continents, remains their remarkable karting experience on the Birel ART Group chassis, the partner of this unique scholarship. Chosen by their respective Birel ART distributor or by the Birel ART Racing Team in Maya Weug's case, they were invited to participate free of charge in the two and a half days of the second edition of the RMYTA from 3rd to 5th December 2019 at Le Mans. Within the FFSA Academy facilities, they were first subjected to physical and mental assessments prepared by Formula Medicine, Dr. Riccardo Cec-

CARS carelli's famous driver training facility. Then, an instructor from the FFSA Academy introduced them to the basics of driving the F4 FIA on the Bugatti circuit. The day ended with a one-on-one interview with members of the panel in the presence of the parents. On Thursday, 5th December, the driving sessions on the Bugatti circuit had to be adapted to the reduced visibility caused by fog. The contenders learned the track behind the safety car before having two 30-minute sessions in the early afternoon. Seven drivers were then selected for the final phase. Giorgios Markogiannis (GRC), Satumno Thanapongpan (THA), Craig Tanic (FRA), Pablo Perez De Lara (MEX), Mac Clark (CAN), Shrien Naidoo (ZAF) and Rafael Villagomez (MEX) faced the clock one last time in the fog for 15 minutes.

"Rafael Villagomez undoubtedly made the difference by making steady progress over the two days," said Ronni Sala, President of Birel ART Group. "This second edition of the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy confirmed the great interest in its concept by giving young kart racers racing under the colours of Birel ART a great opportunity to prepare for their move to single-seaters. I would like to thank Richard Mille once again for his essential involvement in this unique event in the world, as well as the professionalism of the FFSA Academy teams who contributed greatly to the success of this second edition. I salute the impeccable behaviour of every participant and wish Rafael, our 2019 winner, every success." THE RICHARD MILLE YOUNG TALENT ACADEMY RENEWS ITS CONFIDENCE IN THE FFSA ACADEMY

127

KARTCOM NEWS #56

After the success of the first edition, the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy once again called on the expertise of the FFSA Academy in 2019 to organise its operation to find young talent. Thanks to the quality of the infrastructure and services of the federal training centre, 17 drivers aged 14 to 18 from 14 nations and four continents competed at Le Mans from December 3rd to 5th. The Mexican Rafael Villagomez, who was chosen as the winner after a full battery of tests, won a full season in the French F4 Championship for 2020.

O

nly the FFSA Academy can now offer a range of services at this level. At its Le Mans premises, it has sporting facilities specially designed for the physical preparation of drivers, a driving simulator and multi-purpose rooms for video sessions and mental evaluations. All this is next to the workshop where the FIA F4 Mygale/Renault cars of the French F4 Championship are assembled and maintained and made available to the RMYTA. Single-seaters can even reach the pits of the Bugatti circuit in a few minutes. The skills of the FFSA Academy personnel ideally complement the Le Mans infrastructure. Qualified instructors and experienced technicians provide an irreplaceable service thanks to their extensive experience in the field. The nine F4s made available to the 17 participants were therefore able to be

adapted between each run to suit the physiology of each driver, particularly as regards weight and control position, while each driver used his own sets of tyres. It is difficult to do better in terms of equality. "It is very gratifying to see that prestigious entities such as Birel ART and Richard Mille appreciate our knowledge," said Christophe Lollier, National Technical Director. "Our facilities are at the forefront of what is being done in training and we handle the logistics of this type of event from A to Z. The young drivers and their parents who experienced the possibilities of our structure were won over. This type of operation opens up new horizons, which is beneficial for karting as well as for motor sport".

A unique detection formula, the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy offers young kart drivers using Birel ART chassis the opportunity to confront each other on a physical and mental level before competing on the track for a prize with great financial benefits. Beyond the designation of a single winner, the introduction to F4 benefits all participants, thanks to the professionalism of the FFSA Academy. Despite reduced visibility due to the persistent fog, the confrontation on the Bugatti circuit was finally able to take place behind the wheel of the F4 cars in order to determine the candidates' potential for development and to reward the most promising following the evaluations. The Mexican Rafael Villagomez will wear the colours of Richard Mille during the 2020 French F4 Championship, which already promises to be very open for the young talents.

The 2019 F4 French Championship ended at Le Castellet with Hadrien David winning the title, while Victor Bernier won the Junior ranking. But another, less well-known challenge was also at stake this season, that of the Motorsport Leagues.

A

s an essential link between the FFSA, clubs and licence holders, the Motorsport Leagues operate at the regional level. They have the opportunity to support their drivers in the French F4 Championship by awarding them a scholarship for the entire season. Capped by regulation in the interests of equity, however, these financial aids contribute substantially to reducing the total cost of the season. The involvement of the Motorsport Leagues in the training of these young people is an important element in their progress towards a higher level.

This year, four Leagues were able to support seven drivers during the French F4 Championship. The League Challenge establishes a ranking by adding the points of the driver or drivers they support.
