ot that races at the start of the year are not important, but the international and national championships that distribute official titles have mostly been waiting for the second quarter to get going. The first part of the season let the drivers work

on their development. In International racing the WSK Super Master Series filled this role throughout the three Italian events, with the last meeting at La Conca having particular importance for the competitors in KF and KF-Junior, two weeks before the first round of their

European Championship at the same circuit at Muro Leccese. In France, similarly, the FFSA events will begin with the French Cup for KZ 125 at Le Mans, with a very high level of entries.

ALEXANDRE VROMANT

TO REPRESENT FRANCE IN THE 2014 CIK-FIA ACADEMY TROPHY

Consistent with its strategy at the highest level, the FFSA has decided to select a single driver to defend the colours of France in the 2014 CIK-FIA Academy Trophy. In agreement with the President of the FFSA, Nicolas Deschaux, and the President of the CNK, Jean-Pierre Deschamps, a driver from the 10-15 programme, Alexandre Vromant, was chosen.

S

ince 2010, the CIK-FIA has established a one-make international competition designed to enable young hopefuls from all over the world to compete on equal terms in a strict regulatory and economic framework. Anthoine Hubert finished 2nd in the first year of this competition, Dorian Boccolacci was ranked 8th in 2011, Erwan Julé 3rd in 2012 and Gautier Becq 6th last year.

Alexandre Vromant was considered the most suitable drivers of the drivers in the 10-15 Programme to represent France in 2014, given the motivation and the skill he has shown since joining the programme in early 2013, which involves scouting and training set up by the FFSA. 14 years old, he is a serious young person, who shows good academic achievement, and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sport.

The Academy Trophy is run over three rounds on karts that are drawn randomly, Parolin chassis and FIM engines similar to those in KF-Junior. In 2014, the competition will begin in mid-June at Genk (BEL), will continue in mid-July at Wackersdorf (DEU), with the European KZ Championships, and will finish at Sarno (ITA) during the mid-October KZ World Championship.

Jean-Pierre Deschamps, President of the National Commission Karting FFSA, discusses the reasons for this choice: "We chose Alexandre for several seasons. His first year in the 10-15 programme confirmed our impressions. It's nice to see a young man who really wants to succeed! The highest speed is not everything for a successful competitor, motivation and effort also have a heavy influence. Both on track and during physical activities during

the training sessions organized by the FFSA, we appreciated his desire to excel and this is what led us to select him for the Academy Trophy."

10-15 PROGRAMME: EIGHT DRIVERS JOIN IN 2014

FFSAKARTING.ORG

The programme of talent spotting and training from the FFSA has selected eight young drivers to participate in the first stage in 2014 that has just taken place at Le Mans.

T

he base of the pyramid which leads to the top level via the Equipe De France Karting and Circuit, the FFSA 10-15 Programme provides comprehensive training for the nominated drivers, both physical and intellectual, to ensure the best chance of progression. Beyond the support of the Federation, the involvement of the drivers and their families remains an essential element for success.

REPORT

Hugo Chevalier (13 years), Enzo Coursimault (13 years), Xavier Dias (12 years), Nathan HĂŠdouin (13 years), Charles Milesi (13 years), Theo Pourchaire (10 years), Adrien Renaudin (14 years) and Alexandre Vromant (14 years) were selected for the first of the four stages of the 2014 10-15 Programme which ran from March 25th to 28th at the Auto Sport Academy. The medical check-ups alternated with driving lessons, computer and media training, physical training and sessions on the track at Le Mans Karting International. The young drivers have clear benchmarks to enhance their progression during the season. The selection criteria for the 10-15 programme does not only focus on performance during a test. Consistency, improvement potential, motivation and behaviour of the driver and his family, are also taken into account in the federation's choice, based on their extensive experience in the field of driver selection and training. Investment and personal effort are decisive factors for the progression of the drivers. The FFSA is very vigilant on these points, and the positive behaviour of drivers and their families, as well as being familiar with the technique. Contribution from everyone is needed to get good results. To avoid involvement decreasing over the season, the selection does not cover the full year, but only for each race. If the results, efforts and attitude, are not up to expectations, the FFSA won't keep the candidates in the 10-15 programme for long. Top level competition is an extremely challenging field where they need to prove themselves at all times from the beginning. Accordingly, other drivers will be selected during the next scheduled events of May 13th to 15th, from 28th to 31st July and from 6th to 8th October 2014.

It was a dream come true! "Joining the Tony Kart Junior Team in 2008 and the Tony Kart Racing Team in 2009 was a major event. They are the most professional team in karting and it is an honour to work for such a prestigious brand. I had the opportunity to do some car testing, but I remain totally committed to karting. I would like to try my luck now in KZ alongside a great champion like Marco Ardigo. After a season of discovery in 2013, I hope to get results this year. I have taken several pole positions since the beginning of the season, but I have to fight against very experienced opponents in the races. This is a new challenge to overcome!"

THE TM & THE FUTURE OF KF "MORE THAN 20 000 RPM ON THE ALAHÄRMÄ CIRCUIT IN SUPER A, IT WAS FANTASTIC!" THE TONE WAS SET. FRANCO DRUDI, THE TM TECHNICIAN, WE ARE IMMEDIATELY IN THE DOMAIN OF PASSION. A MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC BY TRAINING, FRANCO MOVED ONTO KARTS ON HIS ARRIVAL AT THE FACTORY CREATED BY CLAUDIO FLENGHI AND FRANCESCO BATTISTELLI IN THE MID 1980S, WHOSE MAIN ACTIVITY HAS ALWAYS REMAINED DIRT BIKES. HOWEVER, TM HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MAJOR PLAYERS IN KARTING FOR DECADES, AGAINST ALL ODDS.

"The competition is the reason to live for TM. We have never wanted to start our own single-brand challenge. What motivates us is pure performance, racing, the truth. We have won a lot of European and world titles, but I do not want to recall one in particular. Or rather, the next one!" added the Italian sorcerer before bursting into laughter.

The landscape has changed since 2007. Of the 10 original manufacturers in KF, today there are only three main ones and TM is in first place in terms of volume. "In 2013, we broke our record number of engines produced for all categories," said Drudi. "In contrast, it is not the same for parts, we sell a lot less than before ..."

In statistics, TM engines currently rank first in all international categories. The introduction of the KF regulations in 2007 has still not been easy. "We designed strictly in accordance with the spirit and mechanical specifications that the CIK-FIA put forward at the time the idea of "long life" engines. It soon became clear that the constraints were not sustainable and thr regulations have had to adapt, which did not stop us winning the World Cup for KF2 at Mariembourg in the first year!"

Does this mean that the engines are now much stronger? "The high revs in FA and ICA obviously necessitated frequent replacement of pistons, bearings, connecting rods, etc. KF is now mature, and is very reliable mechanically. I do not agree with the blame given to it for the increased cost of competition. The context has changed, and the engine itself is only a small part."

Would TM therefore not be favourable towards the projects from the CIK-FIA for 2016? "We are not against it!" replied Franco. "Anything that can increase in the number of competitors is a good thing. In an international paddock today, you see a lot of rich, even very wealthy people. It is definite that karting has lost its popular appeal and that is unfortunate. I just think the engines are often thought to be mostly responsible and that is far from the case. I think the engine budget is around 10% of the total cost of the competition. If we can divide that by 2, which is huge, it will represent only 5% savings. Aside from this, we are actively working with the CIKFIA on future engines for 2016. We have already proposed two prototypes and it is not yet decided. Whatever the chosen regulations, TM must be present and we will, you can be sure!"

T

he Trofeo Andrea Margutti reached it's 25th edition in 2014, full of emotion on the anniversary of the young driver who was killed and he was mentioned more than usual. Although the Margutti is no longer a major classic for all drivers and the top teams, the competition remains a major event which has the merit of bringing together competitors from various perspectives, from pure amateurs to the leaders in their classes. The atmosphere is more relaxed, with charm that has too often disappeared elsewhere. The top ten in each category win prizes, making many happy. Winners leave with a chassis under the arm - they are quite beefy - and the others with lots of gifts and a big smile. Established at South Garda Karting at Lonato since 2012, the Trofeo Andrea Margutti saw very nice weather this year and nearly 200 drivers on the track, from over 30 different countries.

KZ2, A MARANELLO FESTIVAL

WITH ZANCHETTA AND CAMPLESE The fight was very close between the two Maranello / TMs of Marco Zanchetta and Lorenzo Camplese during the finals. There was obviously no team orders and it was uncertain throughout before Zanchetta emerged as the winner of the clash, while Camplese finished second with the fastest lap. Pole man and double winner in the heats, Luca Corberi (Kosmic / Vortex) lost time in a heat and then strived to catch up, especially in the final where he managed to reach the third step of the podium. The TB Kart / Modenas of Simone Brenna and Kristijan Habulin completed the top five.

LORANDI THE MASTER

OF KF

Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM) dominated from start to finish, finishing in the lead of the final with a lead of more than 3'' ahead of Jehan Daruvala (FA Kart / Vortex), who was then penalised , after a great duel with the fast driver from Singapore Julien Fong (Tony Kart / TM) who was finally second on the podium. Andrea Moretti (Exprit / TM) took third position to finish after very consistent race.

FEWTRELL

DOMINATES IN KF-JUNIOR

As with Lorandi in KF, Max Fewtrell (FA Kart / Vortex) won everything in Junior at Lonato. Qualifying, heats, prefinal and final, nothing stopped him from taking his first major international victory. Alexander Vartanyan (Tony Kart / Vortex) in second and Lorenzo Travisanutto (PCR / TM) in 4th tried everything to catch the British driver, while

Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM), after very bad start in qualifying, came back happily to 3rd place. Note the promising performance from Ross Martin (Tony Kart / TM) in 5th position and the convincing appearance of German Lirim Zendeli (Tony Kart / Vortex) in 6th place.

SERRAVALLE WINS IN THE END

IN 60 MINI

Intense fighting, constant overtaking Serravalle (Tony Kart / LKE) won ahead of and twists, the 60 Mini didn't fulfil its Dimitri Bogdanov (Tony Kart / LKE) and reputation. Polesitter Marzio Moretti Christian Cobellini (Top Kart / Parilla). FONG ON THE SECOND STEP OF THE PODIUM AT THE MARGUTTI

J

ulien Fong returned to his best form at Lonato for the Margutti Trophy. The driver from Singapore was resuming competition after the winter break. He had already performed well at Sarno during the first round of the WSK Super Master Series last week, but he really revealed the full extent of his talent at the 25th Margutti Trophy on the South Garda Karting circuit, finishing in 2nd place in the KF category. In qualifying Julien posted the second fastest time, just 61 thousandths from the pole sitter, Alessio Lorandi. It was not a surprise to Jarlath Keary, the team principal Kartronix International: "We have not really changed the Tony Kart / TM for Julien at Lonato. I know the driver, he needs to do several races in Europe to regain his full potential. This magnificent result at the Margutti will do him the greatest good for the rest of the season."

Julien perfectly maintained the pace in the heats, each time setting the second fastest lap. 4th in the intermediate classification, he had a more difficult job to to to 7th in the prefinal. Highly motivated, he made a great start in the final and joined the race leader quickly. He passed Jehan Daruvala for second place, but he put in a fierce fight to regain his property. The duel between the two men lasted until the end, allowing the leader to escape. Julian crossed the finish line in third position, but then recovered 2nd place after a penalty for his opponent. It was in any case a great weekend filled with appreciation for the 2013 Asia Pacific Champion, who is anxiously awaiting further exploits in the upcoming important competitions.

FORZA RACING UPS THE PACE

F

ollowing the excellent performance of Kevin Rossel at the opening round of the WSK Super Master Series at Sarno - a rise from 32nd place in qualifying to sixth in the final with excellent times - the other team drivers at Forza Racing were noted during the 25th Margutti Trophy run last weekend at Lonato. Thanks to the effectiveness of the Tony Kart / TMs from the British team owned by Jamie Croxford, they were all able to highlight their qualities. Yan Shlom has improved sharply since the beginning of the season. At Lonato, he was consistently running in the top 10 in KF. For example, he posted the fastest lap of the B against C heat and finished 6th in the intermediate classification and in the prefinal. Despite a difficult start, he ranked 8th in the final while following the pace of the leaders. Although she was racing in only her second race in KF, Wiktoria Pankiewicz was at the top of the table in the heats and simply the fastest time in the prefinal, running a tenth faster than the winner. Ross Martin, in his second international event, was strong in KF-Junior, 3rd in qualifying and twice second in the heats. He came back to 7th in the prefinal with a gain of eight positions, then returned to the top five in the final despite a difficult start after dominating a number of frontrunners. Starting far back, Julia Pankiewicz didn't give up despite several incidents in the heats and earned her qualification with a remarkable performance in the repechage. Again heckled in the prefinal, she put the situation right in the final with a 19th position by regaining 15 places during the race. FORZA-RACING.CO

The young Briton Max Fewtrell literally flew ahead of the category last weekend at Lonato. Faced with 56 drivers from 20 different countries, Max only left crumbs to

Running with the team since the previous race at Sarno, the American Logan Sargeant has now made his mark. He put the nose of his FA Kart / Vortex in the top five, especially in the heats and pre-final, before finishing the final in 7th place despite difficult early laps. In the top 10 in the intermediate classification, the Chinese driver Sun Yue Yang was able to finish 11th in the final, his best result of the season.

Jehan Daruvala was the only one to defend the colours of RFM in KF at the Margutti. Starting 10th after qualifying, he moved up to 5th after the heats, with a best lap in the A against C heat, and was second in the prefinal. He was not quite able to challenge the leader in the final, but crossed the finish line in second position before being demoted to 11th due to overtaking under yellow flag. Rotax Max Euro Challenge 2014

By Frédéric Billet / © Photo KSP - Guillaume VEUVE

ROBUST BEGINNINGS AT GENK A s is traditional, Belgium hosted the first round of the 2014 Rotax Max Euro Challenge, organized by RGMMC. The number of participants continued to rise compared to previous years with 213 drivers present, which is welcome in this period where we are more

accustomed to deflation. To stay with the figures, the British entry continues to lead the competition and the OTK group has increased its grip on the chassis market with a share that exceeds 55%. We were waiting to see how the factory teams would perform and were not disappointed. In DD2,

official drivers dominated the competition with Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG) winning the final against Jonathan Thonon (Praga), while De Conto (Birel) would have had some influence if it hadn't been for his exclusion from the prefinal. Is this a good thing for Rotax? Time will tell. RGMMC.COM

PERFECT RACE FOR PREINING IN JUNIOR

The Austrian Thomas Preining (FA Kart - Team TKP) dominated Rotax Junior without a break throughout the meeting. He only conceded a fourth place in a heat, which gave Max Timmermans (FA Kart Dan Holland Racing) the opportunity to lead briefly. Preining won the prefinal ahead of Dean MacDonald (Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing), Timmermans and Richard Verschoor (FA Kart - Team

TKP), another of the protagonists of the weekend. In the final, Preining and MacDonald were leading the race, leaving Verschoor and Timmermans to fight for 3rd place. Preining won by 2'' ahead of MacDonald, and Rinus Van Kalmthout (FA Kart - Racing VF) passed Verschoor on the wire in the final metres for 3rd place, but then dropped back due to a penalty, putting Verschoor on the podium.

REILLY ARRIVES AT THE FRONT IN THE SENIOR FINAL The two rival team-mates from the Rotax Winter Cup in Senior were finally side by side at Genk. However Guan Zhou Yu (Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) and Joseph Reilly (Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) didn't really shine during qualifying. Zhou made up for this and was faster to lead the intermediate standings then the prefinal, but Reilly, second in the prefinal, attacked two laps from the chequered flag after the race had been neutralized for a few minutes by "Slow" procedure. Edward Brand (Intrepid - Intrepid Driver Program) took the opportunity to steal second position, but Zhou recovered in the last few corners. Oliver Myers (Tony Kart - Coles Racing) and Victor Ă–berg (Gillard - PDB Racing) completed the top five ahead of Yannick de Brabander (CRG - CRG) who was very effective. Fifth at the start, Pierce Lehane (FA Kart - Dan Holland Racing) retired on the second lap.

place with two laps to go, but Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG - CRG), up from 13th place on the grid, was ahead by only 18 thousandths on the finish line.

ACCURACY THE FRENCH AGAINST THONON

Sean Babington (Tony Kart - Strawberry Racing) had pole in DD2 ahead of Paolo De Conto (Birel - Birel Motorsport KMS), but these two would not compete for the final victory. De Conto was excluded for cutting the track in the Prefinal, while Babington stopped back after a collision on the 5th lap of the final. Starting 5th, Jonathan Thonon (Praga - Praga Racing Team) went back to Ben Cooper (Birel - Birel Motorsport KMS), regularly at the forefront throughout the weekend, and he delighted in 1st

IN THE RED

AT GENK

Only Abbasse, Vuillaume, the Simmenuaer and the Benes families were successful in a tough weekend for the French clan. It seems there's a lot of work to do with regards to racing in traffic for the drivers, numbering 25 at Genk, despite the economic downturn, in the Euro Challenge this season.

Damien Vuillaume's (Flandria - Flandria Competition) performance did not go unnoticed in DD2. Constantly in the top 10, and fourth in the prefinal, he passed the finish line in 3rd position, but lost the podium because of a penalty. Anthony Abbasse (Sodi - Sodi) gave himself a big challenge in starting in 30th position for the prefinal after a lot of problems. Still solidly attacking, he managed to get into the top 10 in the final with 9th place. Louis-Ferdinand Simmenauer (Tony Kart - Jana Racing) did an excellent job at Genk: top 10 in qualifying, fifth at the end of the heats and eighth in the prefinal, he had to retire in the early laps of the final, leaving his brother Jean-Baptiste to reap the benefits of his consistency with 22nd position. The experienced fighter, Eva Benes (Kosmic - PKS) got the best French results in Senior with her 18th place.

he first round of the 2014 Rotax Max Euro Challenge took place on the very technical track at Genk on the first weekend of April. In anticipation of the event, the team did important preliminary work, both in the workshop and on track. "The standard is very high, and we are up against experienced teams who know exactly how to approach the Euro Challenge," explained Nicolas Moni, the boss of Jana Racing. "We have to be very rigorous in our approach to be able to compete. The results from Genk are positive: the equipment has progressed and the drivers did a good job for the start of the season."

Louis-Ferdinand was in an enviable position in the rankings for a long time. Already 10th in qualifying, he gave his all to gain ground in the heats and it paid off as he was in 5th place in the intermediate classification. Starting 8th in the final, he moved up to 6th before numerous attacks and he was forced to retire. The potential is there, and he must now become tougher in contact with the European specialists in Rotax Junior.

showed good speed throughout the Belgian meeting. Even more so than his brother, he lacks experience after moving up from the Cadet class in France and had to fight courageously in fields of 35 drivers in the heats. With little luck in the prefinal, his Tony Kart chassis was damaged in an accident that interrupted the race. After emergency repairs, he started a lap behind because of a disagreement with the officials. He then suffered the onslaught from his competition in the final Although he did not really succeed in and finished in 23rd place in spite of some qualifying (30th fastest), Jean-Baptiste convincing times.

CLOSE TO VICTORY IN DD2 IN EURO ROTAX

milliseconds was the tiny gap that separated Jonathan Thonon from the DD2 final win at the first round of the 2014 Rotax Max Euro Challenge in Belgium. A newcomer to the category, Praga Kart Racing Team won a gamble in competing against the most experienced teams on home turf with a record entry. As good a driver Jonathan Thonon is, he is first and foremost an expert in the KZ categories and a good result was not a foregone conclusion in a Rotax competition. However, it was an unprecedented success for Praga Kart allowing their top driver to compete for DD2 victory on his debut at the Euro Challenge.

Still missing a few tenths in his kart, Thonon took on qualifying on Friday afternoon on the Genk circuit. But the potential of Praga chassis in DD2 and the joint work of the team and the driver quickly remedied this slight deficit. Jonathan was able to begin his ascent in the heats: his achievements included the fastest lap in the second heat, A against D, while regaining nine places in 10 laps. Qualifying for the finals in 8th position, he did it again with a new fastest lap and a top five in the prefinal. On a damp track at the beginning of the final, Thonon was waiting for the right time to exploit the qualities of his Praga. Second in midrace, he attacked the leader with two laps to go and fought to maintain his ad-

vantage on the last lap. He was 18 thousandths behind to finish on the podium. The satisfaction for Praga Kart Racing Team is also justified by the constant improvement for the German driver Maxi Fleischmann, left far behind in qualifying, qualified through the Repechage and was 14th in the final. The Irishman Martin Pierce put in an excellent performance in DD2 Master by winning two heats and taking third in the intermediate classification. It was a shame that the DD2 Masters driver was unable to compete in the finals.

T

he 2014 WSK Super Master Series is a mix between the old Master and Euro Series. Although contested entirely in Italy, the Super Master attracts many teams preparing for the CIK-FIA European Championships, both private teams and factories. The level

of competition is therefore higher than in previous years in the Master Series. The programme consisted of three events: Sarno, Castelletto and La Conca, with varying track conditions for competition at European level that looks more and more like the CIK competitions.

T

he first round of the 2014 WSK Super Master Series at Sarno brought together 209 drivers in four classes, with 60 Mini on the programme. The weather had a few surprises on Sunday with a very wet track for the finals.

BASZ THE DRIVER TO BEAT IN KF

Already the winner in KF at the WSK Champions Cup, the Polish driver Karol Basz (Tony Kart / Vortex) repeated it at Sarno and largely took the ascendancy over the young Brit Callum Ilott (Zanardi / Parilla), while the Russian Nikita Mazepin (Tony Kart / Vortex) moved up to the third step of the podium. The Dane Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic / Vortex), in 4th position, remains one of the strong men in the category. Tom Joyner (Zanardi / Parilla), who won prefinal A, was ousted from the battle at the start of the final.

BAS LAMMERS BACK IN KZ2

The Tony Kart / Vortexes of Marco Ardigo and Flavio Camponeschi are always the reference in terms of performance in KZ2. The polesitter and the leader in the intermediate classification, Camponeschi lost everything, retiring from his prefinal while Ardigo, in 2nd, proved formidable in the final. But competition sharpens the weapons and the competition was very tight between the leaders in the category. Bas Lammers (Formula K / Parilla) improved his equipment throughout the meeting to come back from 33rd in qualifying and won the prefinal and final. For Arnaud Kozlinski (Intrepid / TM), the work since the Winter Cup paid off and the French driver could fight regularly at the front, even though he was annoyed not to have done better than third in the final. De Conto (Birel / TM), Hajek (Praga / Parilla), Dreezen (Zanardi / Parilla) and Thonon (Praga / Parilla) completed the final ranking ahead of the Swedish driver Douglas Lundberg (Alpha / TM) who was always very convincing.

TICKTUM

ASSERTS HIMSELF IN KF-JUNIOR After very solid progress, the British driver Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi / Parilla) made a strong impression in the rain. The Italian Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM) tried to resist him in the final, but it was useless. Less comfortable on the wet track, the British driver Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart / Vortex) returned to 3rd ahead of the aspiring Belgian Bejamin Lessennes (Kosmic / Parilla), which gave an opportunity for the VDK Racing team to show off their skills against larger teams. The Spanish driver Eliseo Martinez (LH / TM) demonstrated great potential in the dry during the heats after which he held 4th position.

SZYSZKO, WINS IN 60 MINI

After victories in the prefinals Makar Mizevych (Tony Kart / LKE) moved up from 19th position from pole sitter Nicola Abrusci (Tony Kart / LKE) then Maciej Szyszko (Tony Kart / LKE), who emerged in the rain in the final with a comfortable lead over David Vidales (FA Kart / LKE) and Skeed (Top Kart / Parilla). The leader in the intermediate classification, Giuseppe Fusco (Lenzo / LKE) was less successful in the final (9th), while the winner of the WSK Champions Cup, Muizzuddin Abdul Gafar (Hero / LKE) lost all hope in the prefinal.

SARNO WSK SUPER MASTER :

S R E : M M LA

FIRST SUCCESS FOR BAS LAMMERS WITH FORMULA K

I

n his second international competition of the season in KZ2, Bas Lammers was able to win with Formula K. It was a great satisfaction in more ways than one for the champion from Holland. In a field worthy of a world event, the work and progress made by the team, as well as adverse weather conditions, contributed to a particularly striking success at Sarno. The Neapolitan meeting had not started auspiciously: "We

encountered many technical problems at Sarno in the free practice for the WSK Super Master Series," explained Bas after the podium. "This is not an abnormal situation when the equipment is being developed. Our goal was to work on the race situation for the KZ World Championship taking place at this track in October. But when there performance is not there, it's hard!"

Seeing Bas Lammers in 33rd in timed practice is certainly not common. The first two heats did not see much improvement, with the Dutch driver running in around 15th position. "The whole team was united to solve the problems. The collaboration with Falcon RS (TecSav Engineering), the preparer of our IAME engines, was ultimately very successful. On Saturday afternoon, the mechanics gave complete satisfaction and the development of the chassis allowed me to come back." Bas gained 11 places in the last race, finishing 6th. The next day, the return to form of the equipment was confirmed during prefinal-A, in which the driver could finally fight successfully for the win. Leading from the first to the last lap of the final, the Dutchman gave his first victory to the Formula K team with all the mastery we know he has. On the podium, Andrea Bertolini, the founder of the brand, didn't hide his joy: "It is always a great satisfaction to win a race, but I admit that this has a special flavour. Not only is it the first of the season, the first with the Dutch driver, but in addition it has come about at a complex technical race that has enabled us to strengthen the team as well as the hardware. We made a big step forward in terms of the engine from the work of Thierry Savard. But don't forget that it is the driver who achieved the win on the track, so I especially thank Bas for his performance. Congratulations to him!"

WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES

#2 CASTELLETTO By Frédéric Billet / © Photo KSP - Philippe Kalmès

T

he second round of the WSK Super Master Series maintained it's popularity with over 200 drivers at the Castelletto meeting running in almost summer weather. The sinuous 7 Laghi track significantly changed the situation as the victory changed hands in all categories.

INTERNATIONAL

THE ARDIGO LAMMERS DUEL BEGINS Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart / Vortex) regained the lead in KZ2 after a faultless meeting on very fast equipment. Bas Lammers (Formula K / Parilla) recovered from 8th to 2nd place in the finals after a penalty for contact with Ardigo, while Paolo De Conto (Birel / TM) in third position, impressed with his sense of attack on a track that does not facilitate overtaking in KZ2. Always present at the front, Kozlinski (Intrepid / TM) finished fourth ahead of Ben Hanley (ART GP / TM).

DARUVALA WINS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN KF

The result was uncertain until the end in KF. First Lando Norris (FA Kart / Vortex) was noted for his pole position and his three consecutive victories in the heats. He went off at the start of his prefinal which ended his domination. Jehan Daruvala (FA Kart / Vortex) took over and won prefinal A and the final with a substantial lead. There was a big attack from the French with Gabriel Aubry (Tony Kart / Vortex), who was hit in his three heats, 42nd in the intermediate classification but on the

second step of the podium ahead of Karol Basz (Tony Kart / Vortex). Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic / Vortex) took 4th place ahead of Marco Maestranzi (Top Kart / TM).

SURPRISE WIN

FOR BAIZ IN KF-JUNIOR Mauricio Baiz (Exprit / Vortex) stole the show from the favourites in KF-Junior with a very

convincing performance at Castelletto. As the poleman he went well in the heats before pushing his advantage in the finals. Mick Junior (Tony Kart / Vortex) was on the podium for the first time in second place after solid battling. Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM) took third position in front of Baiz's team-mate, Davide Lombardo (Exprit / Vortex), a revelation then Logan Sargeant (FA Kart / Vortex) who also got one of his best results of the season.

ABDUL GAFAR

SEIZES HIS CHANCE IN THE FINAL

The 60 Mini win looked like to it would go to Nicola Abrusci (Tony Kart / LKE) or Antonio Serravalle (Tony Kart / LKE), winners of their respective prefinals, but their intensity in duelling for the final win was a reason they missed out. The polesitter Muizziddin Abdul Gafar (Hero / LKE) took advantage of the crash for the two leaders on the last lap to win against Makar Mizevych (Tony Kart / LKE) and Christian Cobellini (Top Kart / Parilla) for a surprise podium. Abrusci finished fourth from Serravalle.

work was bearing fruit, as the Vortex engine was at full power and allowed the driver to take full advantage of the Tony Kart chassis on the twisty Castelletto track. As motivated as ever, Aubry attacked from the start of prefinal-B, already gaining seven places at the lights, then nine more positions on his opponents without a pause to finish fourth at the end of the 16 laps, with a bonus of the second fastest lap time. The final was similar: an impeccable start from 8th place to 4th on the sector of the first lap and up towards the front of the race, including overtaking his teammate Karol Basz. The gap to the leader decreased over the laps, but not enough to deny him victory. Gabriel finished an incredible second place, ahead of third by almost 3''. The performance from the driver from the Equipe de France FFSA Karting was unanimously praised.

A

weekend of contrasts, full of twists and an incredible happy ending, summarises the second round of the WSK Super Master Series for Gabriel Aubry at the 7 Laghi circuit at Castelletto. It is also a good illustration of the potential of this amazing driver. On Saturday night, with a 42nd place in the intermediate classification, the Tony Kart driver was not tipped for a result, but ... With second fastest time in his group in qualifying, 4th overall, Gabriel confirmed the effectiveness of his very clean driving style, but the heats were to be catastrophic. At the first start on the outside

lane, he went out at the first corner, stalled and set off again last with a considerable delay, even though he had started from the front row. Not discouraged, he attacked like a man possessed, and caught up with the pack and passed as much as he could. He limited the damage with a 16th place and fastest lap. The other two races ended in two retirements with mechanical problems while Gabriel had been in 4th and 2nd positions. Nothing to worry about for the competition. Tony Kart Racing Team mobilized all their resources and experience to provide Gabriel with a competitive machine for the prefinals, as they had for the heats. The team's

"It is of course a great pleasure to return to the podium positions," Gabriel explained. "Since the beginning of my first season in KF, I was often fast, but could not get a really good result. I have the chance to race for one of the best teams, we work hard and it does pay off. Even though I had a lot of trouble early in the weekend at Castelletto, I was confident because I knew I could run at least as fast as the best. In my situation, the challenge was to avoid accidents and not to lose time in overtaking. I think I am on the way!"

ualifying at the second round of the WSK Super Master Series was not as bright as Sarno for the Brazilian Ennio Gandolfi Racing team. Giuliano Raucci had to fight hard in the heats at the very twisty Castelletto circuit to get over his initial handicap, while managing the lively pack. At the starts Giuliano showed each time that he is very responsive and gained the maximum places, even though the Energy / TM was not at this stage among the fastest in the field. The best time of the weekend came in prefinal A. Qualified in 31st position in the intermediate classification, Raucci jumped

at the lights and attacked to quickly move up into the top 10. Driving a significantly more effective kart, he was in 8th position when the ranking was frozen by the 'Slow' procedure, the karting equivalent of the Safety Car. Unfortunately he couldn't enjoy this more favourable position in the final, as he was ousted from the race on the second lap. The short term goal is now to cement the progress at the next round of the WSK at La Conca, the last major step before the CIK-FIA European Championship for KF-Junior starting at the Italian track in early May.

RFM

RFM TAKES FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON IN KF WITH DARUVALA

T

he young drivers in KF at the RFM team have progressed well since the beginning of the season. During the second round of the WSK Super Master at Castelletto, Lando Norris dominated early in the meeting and Jehan Daruvala emerged in the finals, taking his first victory in the category. In KF-Junior, Logan Sargeant picked up the pace and was at the front for a long time before finishing in the top five of the competition which was marked by several incidents. More than ever, RFM is positioned as the No. 1 team in the CIK-FIA categories of KF and KF-Junior. It was a great success for Jehan Daruvala on the twisty 7 Laghi circuit, with the first win of his young career in KF, and the first for the British team in the category this season. However it was Lando Norris who marked the beginning of the event by achieving a perfect score in qualifying with his pole position and in the heats with three straight wins. His time of 47'' 824 was also never equaled. A collision early in the final wrecked his chances of victory. Meanwhile, Jehan Daruvala was gradually getting the measure of the track at Castelletto and won his prefinal thanks to a relentless ascent. He was then alone in the lead from the first to the last lap of the final by dominating the competition, without fal-

tering, so it was an indisputable victory against the best specialists in the category. The intensity of the races at Castelletto somewhat thwarted the plans for the RFM drivers in KF-Junior, and several race incidents prevented them from getting the desired results. However, Logan Sargeant did beautifully in the heats with a win and fastest lap, and took the lead in the intermediate classification and then his prefinal. Starting on the front row of the final Logan dropped back to 7th in the battle before finishing in 5th position. Enaam Ahmed was less successful: in the Prefinal he was 5th with the fastest time of the race, but he lost time on the first lap of the final, although he managed to climb up to 8th position. Max Fewtrell was not particularly inspired by the Castelletto track. Although he made a great comeback to 6th place in his prefinal he dropped to the back of the pack with his teammate Sun Yue Yang in the final. Now as competitive in KF as in KFJunior, RFM drivers are well prepared for the rest of the season which looks very promising for Ricky Flynn's British team. RICKYFLYNNMOTORSPORT.CO.UK

WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES

#3 LA CONCA

By Frédéric Billet / © Photo KSP - Philippe Kalmès

T

wo weeks before the first round of the CIK-FIA European Championship for the KF and KF-Junior categories at the same track in southern Italy, the WSK naturally attracted additional drivers to complete their preparation or to learn the track at La Conca. Given the number of engine failures for some favourites, we can imagine that engine builders have pushed the engines as far as they can, just to see how far they could go before breaking. In any

case, the competition is fierce in this area as well. The rain did not disrupt the meeting as had been feared, although this didn't stop the frequent clashes, especially going into the first hairpin. Many penalties were given to try to curb the phenomenon. Finally, we should bear in mind that the points scale for the 2014 WSK Super Master Series was progressive, with more points awarded over the events (50 at Sarno, 60 at Castelletto and 70 to finish with at La Conca).

INTERNATIONAL

ILOTT PULLS OUT THE PIN IN KF

Ranked only seventh after the Castelletto meeting, the British driver Callum Ilott (Zanardi / Parilla) clearly raised his game at La Conca, regularly achieving performances of the highest caliber. The pole man in qualifying, he had a few problems in the heats then resumed perfection in the finals. The title did not come by chance, even though the two favourites, Karol Basz (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Jehan Daruvala (FA Kart / Vortex) failed to qualify, victims of mechanical problems in the prefinal. They had not been a threat up until then, qualifying 56th and 8th in the intermediate classification for the Polish driver and 16th in qualifying and 19th after the heats for the Indian. Ben Hanley (ART GP / TM) was partially successful in his return to KF with his second in qualifying and very convincing heats. Third in his prefinal, he had to retire in the final, as did Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic / Vortex) who was one of the best outsiders. Felice Tiene (CRG / TM) successfully finished 2nd in the final against Niko Kari (Tony Kart / Vortex), who put in a very good performance. Finally in fourth, Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM) took 2nd place in the championship ahead of Basz. The two French drivers competing, Gabriel Aubry (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Julien Darras (Kosmic / Vortex) had to retire due to mechanical problems in the final.

AHMED BECOMES A DOUBLE WINNER IN KF-JUNIOR While he had not so far not been very active at the front in KFJunior in the first two rounds of the WSK Super Master Series, Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart / Vortex) returned to the sharp end at La Conca where he won prefinal B and the final, which allowed him to win the series ahead of Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi / Parilla), slightly down this weekend. The leader before the event, Mauricio Baiz (LH / TM), was unable to repeat his feat at Castelletto. He was behind, and completed his misfortunes with exclusion from the final due to a bad manouvre. Second in the final, James Pull (Tony Kart / Vortex) had his best result of the year in a very convincing manner, beating Alexander Vartanyan (Tony Kart / Vortex), Davide Lombardo (Exprit

/ Vortex) who was still in the game and Max Fewtrell (FA Kart / Vortex) who was passed by the top three. Not on top form during the meeting, Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart / TM) still finished in 3rd place in the championship. Note the steady performance in his first race of the season for Jules Bollier (Kosmic / Parilla) who finished 13th in the final. Giuliano Alesi (Tony Kart / TM) deserved to participate in the finals, but the agitation in the pack in the prefinal stopped him. We also saw a good rhythm for the rookie Charles Milesi (ART GP / Parilla), who was 18th in qualifying and a 11th place after the heats; so qualification was not far away.

INTERNATIONAL

KZ2: THONON OPENS THE SCORING BUT ARDIGO REAPS THE REWARDS There was excellent performances from Jonathan Thonon (Praga / Parilla) throughout the weekend with pole position in qualifying, 1st place after the heats and the pre-final victory. But Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart / Vortex) protected his first position in the overall standings with victory in the final, and has always been at the forefront this season. A victim of various problems, both technical and sporting, Bas Lammers (Formula K / Parilla) had a very difficult meeting. However, he managed

to save his rightful second position in the championship from Thonon. With factory equipment, and also a sense of attack that can not be denied, Davide Fore (CRG / TM) was on the 3rd step of the podium in front of Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Arnaud Kozlinski (Intrepid / TM). The French driver gave everything to compensate for a less efficient machine and finished 4th place in the series. Very fast, Paolo De Conto (Birel / TM) had to retire in the final because of a mechanical

failure and is merely in fifth position in the championship. The other French driver in the race, JĂŠrĂŠmy Iglesias (Lenzo / LKE) was 6th after the heats, but his equipment betrayed him on the 2nd lap of the final when he was up in the top 5.

VICTORY AND TITLE IN 60 MINI FOR ABRUSCI Rewarded in the overall classification, Nicola Abrusci (Tony Kart / LKE) struck a double blow by winning the 60 Mini final at La Conca while his rival Makar Mizevych (Tony Kart / LKE) crossed the line in 13th

position before being excluded for a bad manouvre. 3rd in the final was Muizzuddin Abdul Gafar (Hero / LKE) who also deprived him of 2nd place in the championship. There was a big rise for Giuseppe Fusco

(Lenzo / LKE), who was 31st in qualifying and second in the final, a performance that allowed him to move from 9th to 4th place overall.

SUPERKART OF

DIJON DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES

By Jean-Christophe Bourlat © Photo Mediasuperkart - Eric Sevère

T

he French Superkart Championship confirmed its international character (though lacking the British drivers) began with a bang: an entry of 33 competitors, intense and spectacular fights, promising young "rookies" who integrated honorably with the new experimental format and weather that made the discovery of the Dijon track and their equipment easier for a significant share of the competitors. A young German, noticed on a few occasions last year, was the revelation of the weekend. The sparkling Andreas Jost (Anderson / PVP) aims to break into the top 10 in Europe, and came to prepare his season at Dijon successfully as he won the first two races and yields only face a confirmed champion, Peter Elkmann (MSkart / VM) for the last, settling for second place on the podium.

NATIONAL

The first race gave us a fight without respite between five drivers at the front, exchanging their positions and showing their strength. Laurens Westerdijk - with 10 races under his belt - made a sensational start and was between Jost and Alexander Sebastia (Anderson / FPE). The 2013 French Champion Sébastia passed beautifully in the slipstream while the two leaders fought side by side, but suddenly overran. Then the Swiss driver Etienne Aebischer (3rd in the

championship in 2013) was between them, and played a leading role. Peter Elkmann, not so fast in qualifying, was back in the game and joined in with the fight. With just a length between them, the trio of Lacoste, Vayssié and Harvey were fighting. Jost took over the lead and resisted Sebastia, with Aebischer stuck in his bumper. Vayssié was the fastest on the track and was trying to join this group but had to give up after a fuel problem two laps from the chequered

flag. Martin Eteki, from 10th row, was the best "rookie". In race 2, we saw the same protagonists who resumed with closer racing. Aebischer held his nerve to take the lead on the first lap, Lacoste very quickly tucked in behind the Swiss driver and Jost, and Harvey was now ahead of Westerdijk who could not repeat his previous achievements. Sebastia stayed deliberately in ambush, he

was in 4th and seemed to have the perfect package (240 km / h at the end of the straight!) Then in the second third of the race he started to attack and was nestled behind Jost. Mechanical problems would decide the fate of the leaders. Aebischer had an ignition problem then broke down. VayssiĂŠ followed Elkmann, causing a disturbance on the last lap. In the last dramatic twist, Sebastia broke down (rod). Jost won again, with Elkmann and VayssiĂŠ

accompanying him on to the podium. The damage in the second race was not without consequence. Sebastia, Aebischer and Harvey (a timing problem) couldn't start in Race 3. The grid was different, typical of traditional karting, based on the results of the first two races. Jost took the lead before being challenged by Elkmann who improved throughout the meeting. VayssiĂŠ started well and could have caused

a surprise but took 3rd place. At the end of the race he had difficulties but after gaining a lead, he could lift off foot crossed the finish line losing only one place. It was a good end of weekend for K.Busby. He had not completed more than a lap before the first race and he finished honorably. He was well-placed in the morning (5th) and ended up on the podium in the final! Eteki was again best "rookie", with a better position even as high as an encouraging 7th.

MAWSON GETS HIS SEASON OFF TO A FLYING

START! T

he Auto Sport Academy trainees had an enjoyable weekend’s racing in the first round of this year’s French F4 Championship on the Le Mans Bugatti circuit despite the inclement weather. After two official test days included in their training course at the end of March and the beginning of April, the young chargers were able to have their first taste of real competition in the context of the GT Tour. Australian Joseph Mawson gave a superb display of his talent with three top-3 finishes including two victories in a series of action-packed events. The second round of the season will take them to the historic setting of Pau for the 73rd International Grand Prix on the city circuit.

Qualifying quickly revealed the weekend favourites Joseph Mawson and Anglo-Swiss Felix Hirsiger who took pole for races 1 and 3. In the first heat Mawson transformed his pole into victory without problems. He shared the podium with Lasse Sorensen from Denmark and French driver Dorian Boccolacci who started in ninth place. The start of race 2 was marked by a spectacular somersault by Valentin Moineault who was fortunate to emerge unhurt from the accident, but was unable to take part in the third and last heat of the weekend. Poleman Bryan Elpitiya never lost his lead and took the chequered flag after 20-minutes racing on the Le Mans track during which he opened up a comfortable gap over his nearest pursuers.

Joining him on the podium were Mawson and Hirsiger, while Paul Hockfelt Jr from Switzerland made a spectacular comeback to finish just outside the top 3.

PIERRE GASLY W

inner of the 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Pierre Gasly has moved up to the next level thanks to the scholarship offered by Renault Sport Technologies. The man, who recently got his driving licence on his 18th birthday, also a member of the Red Bull Junior Team and French FFSA Circuit Team, will try to imitate Robin Frijns and Stoffel Vandoone, in battling for the title in his first year in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. On pace during the collective tests, the Frenchman hopes the momentum will accelerate. WORLDSERIESBYRENAULT.COM

CARS

Coming from a family where his grandfather, father and three of his brothers all raced, it was natural that Pierre Gasly tried his hand in karting before making his competition debut at the age of nine. His performances soon caught the eye of the "Fédération Française du Sport Automobile", which integrated him into the 10-15 years of age programme then the French FFSA Karting Team. In 2011, Pierre Gasly began his open-wheel career in the French F4 Championship. With four victories and six podium finishes during the last six races, his results allowed him to take part in testing sessions in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, "the logical next step" for the native of Normandy. Soon among the best Europeans, he took his maiden pole position and first podium in his second outing at Spa-Francorchamps in 2012. "I didn't drive much before, so my results were a little unexpected", admits the Frenchman. "Alas, I wanted to do too much while my team-mate at the time, Nyck de Vries showed that the top 5 was possible. Once my errors were analysed, I learned a lot to be stronger, especially in the construction of a weekend." For his second season, Pierre Gasly joined the most successful team in the World Series by Renault, Tech 1 Racing. Success came after an epic duel with Oliver Rowland, who he will compete against this year in the

Formula Renault 3.5 Series. "Simon Abadie's team doubled its effort for us to work and win the title together. Without the scholarship, I would certainly not be in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series", he concedes. Winner of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Pierre Gasly has the scholarship offered by Renault Sport Technologies, but also the support of Red Bull after joining the Junior Team. "The FFSA has been in contact with Red Bull since the ascension of Jean-Eric Vergne. In 2012, I had the opportunity to work with the Austrian company, but they didn't want to bring me into their team. Morgan Caron, National Technical Director of the FFSA, set up a meeting a year later after I had won the championship. A conversation with Helmut Marko led to a contract with Red Bull", says Gasly. "I now have access to the Red Bull simulator where I work with the engineers. I am also working with two coaches one of which was Sebastien Vettel's. Between the physical tests, the complete nutritional studies, the sleep and mental evaluations, everything is being done to optimize my potential", details the 18-year old driver. "I also take part in training sessions with the French FFSA Team, while also studying for my degree from the ‘Pôle Espoirs du Mans'. Once I have my diploma I will head to Milton Keynes". As the first meeting of the season nears, is Pierre Gasly ready to walk in the footsteps

of his predecessors Robin Frijns and Stoffel Vandoorne ? "As we get closer to the goal it becomes more difficult. Their successful transition is motivating, so why would I not be capable ? I will give it my all to make the difference and have no regrets. Although there are a lot of new things, such as the length of the races, pit stops and dealing with the DRS, the top 3 is possible...although I am competitor who wants to win quickly !" Another new experience for Pierre Gasly is racing for a British team : "The world of F1 is based essentially in Great Britain. So to be at Arden Motorsport is a bonus for me. I will be able to get used to their way of communicating, their visions, their methods and their experience." Pierre Gasly has competed in all the Renault Sport Technologies open-wheel categories, demonstrating the effectiveness of the driver development academy. "From Formula Renault 1.6 to the 2.0, it has gone well. I was a little apprehensive in the move to Formula Renault 3.5 as its potential is unimaginable, but the feelings remain broadly the same. Success proves that we are ready to do great things, like the performances of the past drivers in F1 demonstrate. The pyramid put in place by Renault Sport works and prepares you in the best way. When you wake up every morning with the goal of making it to F1 it is very motivating."

LIKE KARTING IN BAHRAIN FOR HAMILTON AND ROSBERG! A

t the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2014 which was punctuated by intense struggles, karting came to mind for Lewis Hamilton to discuss his magnificent duel with Nico Rosberg:

"We have not done a race like this, with Nico, since we started in karting. I just told him that I don't remember the year, but it was our first big fight. He led throughout the race and I have overtook on the last lap to win. I was sure he would do the same thing today, that was what was in my head."

WE WILL MAKE A WISH: THAT F1 WILL LOOK A LITTLE MORE LIKE KARTING, AND NOT VICE VERSA ...
