Rachael Collins from Fleur Florist
All Things Local has joined forces with Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community.
The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Kelly Marshall from Kilburn. She was nominated by Jayne Carver also from Kilburn. Here’s what Jayne wrote:
“I would like to nominate my good friend Kelly Marshall. Kelly is a Nurse in the ICU at Nottingham Hospital and works so hard caring for critically ill patients. Due to COVID 19, I know that Kelly has had a really tough year, working so many extra hours at the hospital because of the greater demands on the wards, whilst also looking after her own family and home schooling her two children during the lockdowns! Kelly has played a huge part in many patients recovering from COVID this past year - I think she’s a pretty amazing person and would love for her to receive a beautiful bouquet! Thank you.” Jayne Carver.
Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet.
All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/working at the same address… and remember, flowers don’t just have to be for women!
The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in the distribution area of All Things Local Village Edition (listed on front cover). Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to karyn@allthingslocal.co.uk putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.
Closing date for nominations for the next issue is Wednesday 23 June 2021.
All nominations are kept on file and you will be contacted if your nomination has been selected. Contact information is only used by All Things Local; no information is given to any third party. Kelly Marshall (left) with her lovely bouquet – presented by her friend Jayne Carver.

Local History
Something from Strutts
If you are local to Belper you will probably be familiar with the wonderful landmark Grade II listed building built as a school for the township, generously funded entirely by George Herbert Strutt. Designed by architects Hunter and Woodhouse, it was intended to complement the style of Babington Workhouse built opposite.
Opened by the Duke of Devonshire in 1909, the building has stood the test of time, adapting to various changes, becoming Higher Elementary, Grammar, Middle and Primary Schools over the years. Many a ‘Strutty-Banger’ has passed through these doors!
When Herbert Strutt Primary School moved to new premises in 2008, a local group of people, passionate about the building, its legacy and importance to the community, worked with the council authorities to achieve an agreed change of ownership. Their commitment and dedication ensured that the site would become a social enterprise, providing facilities for the community and local businesses, under the terms of the original deed of covenant set out by George Herbert Strutt.
Strutts Community Centre remains a valuable asset to Belper.
The invaluable team of hardworking, friendly volunteers enable many clubs, groups, business meetings, activities and events to take place. With the wonderful balconied hall, external grounds and rain garden, gym, library and a variety of rooms of different sizes for multi-purpose use, this grand building still proudly serves to educate, entertain and embrace the people who visit.
Having battled through the most recent unprecedented challenges, Strutts Community Centre is again adjusting to changing times ahead with renewed optimism and vigour!
During the difficult past year, the doors have had to remain closed for far longer than anyone might have anticipated. However, this time has been put to good use and plenty has been happening behind the scenes. In addition to new administrative and procedural protocol now necessary, returning visitors will notice that refurbishments, redecoration and revamping has taken place, but the character, atmosphere and very warm welcome remains.
There’s even a slight change of name too… As the summer arrives and life gradually moves cautiously on, ‘Strutts Community & Business Centre’ looks forward to seeing familiar faces return – and hopefully some new ones too!

Upbeat: Derbyshire Constabulary Invest in New Drone Technology
Derbyshire Constabulary has invested in a number of new drones, which will allow better assistance at incidents such as warrants, road traffic collisions, and searches for missing people.
Based with the force’s central drone team, the DJI Matrice 300 RTK will allow the team to fly for longer and in all weather types. The new piece of kit has a 55-minute flight time (an increase of 20 minutes on current equipment), as well as the ability to fly in the rain, and in winds of up to 33mph.
It also has a much higher transmission range, which will allow larger areas to be covered by drone. The upgraded camera has thermal capabilities and features a 20x zoom, which will allow operators to get a closer inspection or identification on what they’re filming.
Additional features mean a quick tap can track an object from the camera, which will be invaluable when the team assist in car chases, or when suspects try to leave their property. To support this, an advanced sensor can also immediately deliver coordinates to officers on the ground, allowing them to get a precise location when searching for missing people and suspects.
New drones are also being delivered to officers at stations across the county. The Mavic 2 Enterprise is an upgrade to the drones teams currently have, and features an improved thermal camera, 48MP visual camera and 32x zoom capability. These will give a considerable improvement for the day-to-day use in fair weather, as well as for night-time search capability, while the larger M300 drone will predominantly be used in the more rural areas in adverse weather.
Back in August 2019, the drone team launched a 24/7 capability. Since then, they have proved to be invaluable in life-threatening situations, finding missing people, helping to detect cannabis grows, and tracking down suspects on the run as they hid in bushes or jumped over fences.
The use of drones in policing continues to save the force money in officer deployment hours and call outs for the National Police Air Service.

Bereavement Matters
It may not have had the pop music, the crowds and the outpouring of grief that Diana, Princess of Wales’s funeral did, but the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral was still, in its own way, remarkable.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that it was an event the like of which we will never see again.
This is not so much for the arrangements themselves, which, from the pomp and circumstance and the military precision to the eccentric inclusion of his favourite Land Rover and the choice of music and readings, were very much in keeping with a traditionalist who did things his way.
Instead, its uniqueness comes from the fact that it took place during a pandemic, when so much of what we would expect from a Royal funeral – from foreign dignitaries in attendance to large choirs and crowds lining the streets – were absent because of the coronavirus restrictions.
This was certainly something which was very quickly apparent to anyone who has not attended a funeral over the past 12 months, especially when they saw the heartbreaking pictures of the Queen sitting on her own, with her head bowed, just yards from her husband’s flag-covered coffin.
Social distancing meant that the members of the Royal Family had to keep their distance in the same way as the families from all walks of life throughout the year were prevented from gathering closely together, unable to offer each other a shoulder to cry on during the service.
To see such well-known people, of the highest standing in the country, placed in the same situation as everybody else because of a pandemic was unique and it will stand tall in the history books as a sign of the extent to which the coronavirus affected everyday life.
As for the rest of the funeral, I was most full of admiration for the pall bearers, who undertook their duties without putting a foot wrong to deliver the Duke’s coffin respectfully and on time under what must have been intense pressure and with the eyes of the world upon them.
