WELCOME LETTER Hello readers, old and new. Welcome to the October/November edition of All Things Local! Once again, we’re thrilled to be back after our short, enforced hiatus earlier this year. The ‘Late Summer’ comeback edition was so well received – we’ve had wonderful feedback from many readers who’ve kindly taken the trouble to email or write to us expressing how pleased they were to see our little magazine again. Many of our distributors also passed on messages from the public who thanked them for delivering All Things Local. It’s really heart-warming to know how much people in the local community value, enjoy and appreciate our magazine. Thirteen years ago All Things Local was created with this purpose in mind and it’s great to see that, over a decade on, despite many changes in the world, we’re still fulfilling this aim. We’re now pleased to be delivering to some new areas and the reaction from these places has been fantastic too! If you’re among our new readers, thank you for the warm welcome and we hope that you’ll continue to enjoy all that All Things Local has to offer. Many of our advertisers have reported enquiries from these new locations so thank you for supporting these local businesses – and for mentioning All Things Local when you make contact! As things are starting to move slowly back to some form of normality, life is still different in many respects, as we all know. Due to the restrictions on events and public gatherings we haven’t reintroduced the ‘Community Diary’ and ‘Little Black Book’ sections of the magazine…but we are planning to publish these sections online in the future. Watch this space for updates. We’ve recently launched a new All Things Local Facebook page (Facebook.com/AllThingsLocalMagazines) so please give us a like on there! After the beautiful spring we were lucky enough to enjoy during lockdown, these last few months have been pretty turbulent weather-wise, haven’t they! From temperatures of thirty-plus degrees, to torrential rain and then storm Francis, every day’s been different! With travel abroad being more difficult and visits to some countries subject to quarantine restrictions, many

people have chosen to holiday in the UK this summer or even just enjoy a ‘staycation’ at home with local day-trips. The good ol’ British weather may have kept us on our toes but we hope you’ve had the opportunity to enjoy some ‘downtime’ and the best that the UK has to offer. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful area, where a walk or a short drive can take you to some of the most beautiful countryside anyone could wish for. While this year has certainly proved that none of us know what’s round the corner, it has, in many ways, shown how resilient and adaptable we can be – both in life and in business. We hope that you are all still weathering the storm and that the situation with the global pandemic continues to improve in the UK and around the world. We will be back in two months’ time for the Christmas edition as we prepare to bid a not-so fond farewell to 2020 and hope for a much better 2021! Nowadays the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, JK Rowling, Boris Johnson and Lily Allen are celebrated for their outspoken views, and yet we average Brits are apparently so fearful of causing offence that we remain tight-lipped even when we are subjected to discomfort or inconvenience. If someone is thoughtlessly blocking our way, we say “excuse me” as if it were our fault, and if we receive grudging service in a restaurant, we’ll not only say “thank you”, we’ll probably even leave a tip. Another classic British trait is our talent for understatement. Our tendency to underplay everything was famously demonstrated during the Korean War, when embattled British soldier Brigadier Tom Brodie of the Gloucester Regiment reported to an American superior officer, General Robert H Soule, with the fatal words: “Things are a bit sticky, sir.” He meant that his men were facing an imminent and terrible defeat, but the General’s interpretation was that despite some difficulties, the Gloucesters were successfully holding the line. Unsurprisingly, this miscommunication resulted in huge numbers of British soldiers being killed, wounded and captured.

Media personality Stephen Fry, dubbed ‘the most polite man in Britain’, admitted to BBC presenter Mark Lawson: “Being over-polite is not attractive … I can’t watch someone not saying thank you, and I can’t not say it myself. If I noticed I hadn’t said it, I’d have to come back in the room and say ‘thank you’. It’s feeble!” If Stephen Fry – an icon of good manners – dislikes over-politeness, what will become of the rest of us? Will we eventually ditch this quintessentially British behaviour in favour of a more direct (some would say more honest) approach? It doesn’t seem as though this will happen any time soon. A report published by research company Childwise looked at the way children interact with the artificial intelligence bots in devices such as phones and tablets. Researchers found that children were barking commands at their robotic helpers without using “please” and “thank you” and concluded that this behaviour might encourage them to become aggressive in later life. In response to Childwise’s findings, Amazon has now included a politeness feature (known as ‘Magic Word’) in its Echo software and it’s likely that other tech companies will follow Amazon’s lead. With robots getting in on the act, it’s unlikely that we’ll forget our “pleases” and “thank yous” in future. In fact, as the technology develops, it may even become easier to tell a stranger that he’s standing on your foot: simply get your unfailingly polite robot to speak to him for you. By Kate McLelland

Just a Thought... Perfectly Principled

In a world where perfection is lusted after and an imaginary bar is set to show us ‘the average’ person, I revel in the ‘Jaggedness Principle’. Todd Rose is the man I take my proverbial hat off to this edition, because he scientifically proves that there really is no such thing as normal – hurrah! Todd’s explanation revolves around the ‘Science of the Individual’ and ‘The Myth of Average’. In its most basic terms it seeks to understand that every person or concept is made up of many smaller facets and so you can’t create an average marker for anything because we aren’t linear or designed to be measured in one way. People’s size, intelligence and abilities are just some examples of how this is true. The ‘Jaggedness Principle’ lights the way in understanding how, really, the search for the

average or the perfect is utterly futile. It awakens us to the existence of individualism, difference and diversity. Its beauty lies in the simplicity of its explanation of thousands of years of human complication, misunderstanding and dissatisfaction. If you have ever heard someone say, ‘That’s not normal,’ or ‘He’s practically perfect,’ or perhaps, ‘She was an average size,’ and questioned what is normal, or perfect or average… well we can say thanks a bunch to Mr Rose because, my dear readers, he has offered us the proof that actually, when it comes to us humble humans, those concepts are frankly fruitless. Thus, I urge to you, celebrate yourself just as you are and stop striving to be ‘like everyone else.’ You must, it’s the ‘Principle’ of the matter.

Travel Andorra Enclosed by the Pyrenees in a narrow valley between France and Spain, the principality of Andorra is one of the smallest states in Europe at just 15 by 18 miles. On the right bank of the Gran Valira, at over 3,000 feet, Andora la Vella is the highest capital, its tall buildings making the most of limited space. But, beyond the duty-free shops of Escaldes, mountains and valleys spread across the land, so peaceful and unspoiled, it is nature at its best.

bearded vultures gliding overhead or a tiny goldcrest, ‘King of the Birds’ in local folklore. There’s a wealth of medicinal plants, mushrooms, flowers, trees and shrubs, thriving in their own microclimates according to altitude and soil, on sunny slopes or in the shade.

Imagine seventy-two peaks in this mini-country, dozens of lakes glistening blue, rivers and wetlands and, for those in the know, fabulous ski slopes in winter and in the bright summer sun wonderful trails rambling from Mediterranean to Alpine zones. Family walks or challenging hikes, this is a well-kept secret, and with so much to explore in summer the only problem is knowing where to start. Rambling, climbing, horse riding, canyoning, fishing, the scenery unfolds all along the trails, catering for different abilities and sometimes joining the long-distance footpaths dotted with mountain shelters.

Among the many trails is the ‘Mountain Path’ climbing up the Madriu valley, ‘the Mother River’, towards the distant peaks tackled by mountaineers. But even a morning trek from the capital is full of rewards, though steep in places. First there are fabulous views of the town far below, framed by peaks draped in eternal snow, then beyond the old bridge and foaming rapids is a nostalgic mule trail winding its way up through stones and rocks, as it has done for hundreds of years. At over 5,300 feet, the forlorn settlement of Ramio nestles among pastures and fields dotted with remnants of dry stone walls and huts. Lizards bask on the stones, butterflies flutter here and there then all is quiet until a thunderous roar sends shivers down your spine, the Madriu crashing through fallen branches and trees. But further up, beyond the conifers, the landslides and barren ridges, the valley opens out and the Fontverd refuge greets trekkers with flower meadows, rivulets and pools plus the young Madriu where they can dip their feet in freezing water. At 6,151 feet, it feels like a dream.

In the south-east, close to the capital, Madriu-Perafita-Claror is the country’s second most important river basin and a UNESCO site listed for its cultural landscape. Rising up to 9,530 feet at Portelleta Peak, the park stretches over seven miles and, with no traffic allowed, boasts 70% of Andorra’s 1,500 species of fauna and flora, including rare and endangered specimens. It’s sheer delight for nature lovers: here a lonely mountain goat perched on a rock, there a family of boars scrounging in the shadows, marmots twittering in the sun,

Plant Popularity Over the last few months, our house has gradually been taken over by houseplants. It appears that one plant very easily becomes two, two become three, then all of a sudden there are thirty. In our case anyway. Shelves, windowsills, bookcases, in fact any flat surface is now populated with various varieties. But where does the idea of keeping houseplants come from? How did species from the tropics end up in our bathrooms? And why are indoor plants becoming increasingly popular? I decided to dig around and discover some facts about my leafy companions: The origins of houseplants date back to early human history. In China, they were considered a status symbol and were found in homes as early as 1000BC. They became popular during the European renaissance and orangeries were used to show off exotic citrus varieties. Over time, the design of houses with heating and more natural light meant that tropical species could be kept successfully indoors.

These can be shared with friends or swapped for different varieties to increase your houseplant range. I now find it difficult to walk past plants without mentally categorising them into ‘got it’ or ‘need it’ for the collection. Once you start going down the houseplant journey a love of plants might grow on you too.

They reduce stress and can improve concentration. As well as this positive psychological effect they can benefit our physical health. They can survive low light and are tolerant of fluctuating temperatures. Nowadays there’s no need to worry about watering. There’s an app that will alert you when your plants are in need of refreshment. The best thing about houseplants is you don’t have to spend a small fortune. A lot of varieties are prolific propogators and its a simple job to root a cutting or transplant babies. The spider plant is a perfect example of this. They are the gift that keeps on giving.

Life List The Book of Luke When I watched the original Star Wars trilogy I never realised I was also getting an education. Even if these were not the lessons I was looking for! 1. It’s all your dad’s fault and he will sometimes behave as if he’s conquered the universe. 2. The first girl that you’re attracted to may only love you as a brother. It’s probably better in the long run. 3. Joining a rebellion can be fun. You meet interesting, like-minded people to complain about how oppressed you are and how no one understands you. 4. Don’t let your parents try to talk you into following a similar career path. Find your own way. 5. Respect your elders. A lot of wisdom has gone into making those wrinkles, and a lot of stupidity too.

6. At some stage you may end up with a terrible haircut. Wear it as a badge of pride. Dorkiness can be cool, especially among your rebellion friends. 7. When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle it can seem as if everyone else is out to get you. Keep safe and disengage the sat-nav if it’s distracting! 8. A dog – or anything that looks like one – will make a good companion. But don’t let it lick your face. 9. Always leave the party before it descends into schmaltz. The Bulls Head and The Marquis Pub & Kitchen Business partners Louise Knight and Simon West have been running The Bulls Head at Denby for many years but recently they expanded their business to include another local pub – The Marquis on Codnor Denby Lane. It turned out that 2020 hasn’t been the ideal year to be expanding in the pub trade, but Lou and Simon used the lockdown time wisely and renovated The Marquis both inside and out! The transformation is incredible and, when they were able to reopen in July, visitors couldn’t believe the difference. They’ve also been awarded a 5* food hygiene rating and customers have been enjoying their delicious menu of pub classics. The Bulls Head has undergone some changes too. Their previous chef has moved to The Marquis and a new head chef has joined at The Bulls Head, developing an exciting new restaurant menu packed full of homemade dishes created from the finest local produce. Both pubs source their meat locally from Hunts butchers – owned and run by Lou’s family – so it’s all top quality and fully traceable. Chicken and Pepper Jalfrezi Save a trip to the takeaway, just cook up this deliciously spicy chicken curry instead. Serve with pilau rice, warmed naan breads and some cooling cucumber and mint raita. Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Ingredients: 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp each ground turmeric and ground cumin 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 tbsp grated fresh root ginger 2 green chillies, deseeded and chopped 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 2 tbsp tomato puree 500g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 2 red and 2 green peppers, deseeded and cut into chunks 4 tomatoes, chopped 4 tbsp freshly chopped coriander Salt and freshly ground black pepper Strips of lemon zest, to garnish Method: Heat a heavy-based non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add the mustard seeds. Toast for 1-2 minutes until just popping. Place in a mini processor or blender with the turmeric, cumin, garlic, ginger and half the green chillies. Add 3 tbsp water and process to a paste. Heat the oil in the frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion and remaining green chilli for 10 minutes

until the onion is soft and golden. Stir in the spice paste, tomato puree and the chicken and cook, stirring, for 3-4 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink. Stir in the peppers and tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes then add 300ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Stir in half the coriander and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with the remaining chopped coriander and the strips of lemon zest.

Hollow Tree Brewing Co. I got talking to Steve from Hollow Tree at Belper Farmers’ Market and thought their story was worth telling. This local brewery, based in Whatstandwell, makes some great beers using relatively modest equipment. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself: your passion, mission statement and why a little village in Derbyshire? “Hollow Tree Brewing Co. as a business has been in development for over 2 years, in varying and progressing forms. I’ve always had a passion for beer and have been home brewing since 2013. When I started creating my own recipes, I realised that I could turn my hobby into a viable business, with a little help from my family. Hollow Tree takes inspiration from the surrounding Amber Valley landscape, using nature as its lead and from which the core beers take their names: Wren, Nightingale, Cambium, Verdure and Murmuration. It is this inspiration from nature that Hollow Tree bases its business and brewing philosophies on, producing clean, natural and flavoursome beers. Having lived in cities for many years, the thought of living in a peaceful little village in the countryside seemed idyllic. When I met my wife, who grew up in Derby, we decided it was the perfect time to move into the countryside so we found a home in Whatstandwell. When I plucked up the courage to start my own brewery there seemed no better place to do this than my home. We love living in Derbyshire and are proud to supply beer to our local area.” In quite a competitive market, how do you connect your beer to the local area and where can we expect to see your beers? “We attend Belper Farmers’ Market which is held on the second Saturday of every month. We have also attended Belper’s summer and winter food and drink festivals. More recently, we have reached out to local businesses and are proud to say that our beers can now be found at The Beer Trap in Belper, House of Beer in Ashbourne, Beer District in Buxton and The Beer Stop in Dronfield. They will also be available online soon from our own web store.” Your name, logo and branding are quite strong, how did you come up with brand identity? “I was inspired to name the brewery Hollow Tree after a walk through Shining Cliff Woods in Ambergate. I am

lucky enough to have a very supportive family and even more lucky that my wife and sister-in-law are both very creative; we teamed up to create the logo and branding. Myself and my wife are both keen beer drinkers and enjoy trying new and different beers. As such, we know how important branding is; it can be the difference between selecting an interesting looking new beer to taste or glancing past. Every beer that goes out is hand made from start to finish, from the brewing to bottling and labelling and handwriting every batch number and filled date. We feel that care and diligence to every bottle helps towards the brand further.” Do you have a core range and are there plans for any festive specials? “Our core range is 5 beers: Wren Red IPA, Cambium Golden Ale, Verdure English IPA, Nightingale Robust Porter and Murmuration Weissbier. We also have our Wild Series in which the beers all have ingredients which have been locally foraged. These beers include ingredients such as wild hops and wild fruits, so they are available shortly after picking and once they are gone they aren’t available until the following year. We will be creating a limited-edition Christmas beer which will be available from early December and is in development as we speak.” If last year’s Wild series was anything to go by, I would highly recommend seeking those beers out as soon as they come out, for fear of missing out. After the storms, rain, wind and, in between, some warm days, this has been a strange summer! As autumn approaches we can only hope for a few more ‘summer’ days so, to try and bring some more summer sun to you, I would like to showcase a wine produced in the sunshine of South Africa.

The signature wine of South Africa has become a white wine made from the Chenin Blanc grape. Originally, as with most wines, the vines originated in France; the variety is known as Pineau or Pineau de la Loire there. It has become probably the world’s most versatile grape, making everything from long-living sweet wines to mass produced white wine. In South Africa, it is used for a wide range of wines including sparkling and as a base for fortified wine and spirits. In 2000, South Africa had twice as much Chenin planted than France. ‘The Tea Leaf’ 2018 is the wine I would like to tell you about. Made for the Boutinot wine group, it is made from vines that grow in what was an old tea plantation. The Rooibos tea plant is indigenous to South Africa and the winemaker has to let the tea plants grow within his rows of grape vines, as they are protected but cannot be cultivated. The winemaker thinks that this gives the wine its own unique flavour. The vines, which are up to 70 years old, grow on the rocky slopes above the valley floor on the Piekenierskloof escarpment in the Western Cape area of South Africa. In the winemaker’s notes, the fruit is stolen away at night or in the small hours of the morning in chilled grocery trucks to the Zorgvliet winery to be sorted by Donovan Rall, the winemaker. It is then naturally fermented in a mixture of old wooden barrels and steel tanks which takes up to 10 months. The wine is finally gently racked and bottled. Only 4000 bottles are produced. Technical Details Grapes: 85% Chenin Blanc with Palomino and Grenache Blanc Appearance: Clean – clear wine with slight green tint (tea?) Nose / Aroma: Complex sandy stone fruit with notes of crushed granite, slight saline and Rooibos. Taste: Firm, high-key fruit flavours with a broad texture and long finish. Alcohol by Volume: 14%. Food match: Quiches, frittatas, omelettes and simply cooked fish dishes (scallops, squid and fishcakes). They also suggest pasta, risottos, salads & sushi. The Ten Cars with the Biggest Boots Practicality is an important factor when buying a car, so we’ve brought together examples with cavernous boots from a variety of segments: Skoda Fabia 330 litres with the rear seats up / 1,150 with the rear seats down. This pleasant walk includes some excellent scenery and two picturesque villages. The walk also contains a short section of the High Peak Trail and a rocky summit. The Route 1. The start of the walk is the car park overlooking Carsington Water (grid ref. SK249528) on the south side of the B5035 Ashbourne to Wirksworth Road near the village of Carsington. Please note it is not the car park adjacent to the main visitor centre for Carsington Water. 2. After parking, walk towards the entrance of the car park and take either of the footpaths signed on your right. These both lead to the B5035 where care is needed to cross the road and continue along the footpath on the opposite side of the road into Carsington village. The path, muddy at times, leads into a track. Follow this as it becomes a lane and leads to the crossroads in the village centre (grid ref. SK251534).

section the path enters a large field and climbs steeply uphill. Do be careful as there are many former mine shafts on the next section of the walk so keeping to the path is the recommended option. 4. The path reaches the boundary of a wood. Do not continue into the wood, instead go half left and with the stone wall on your right continue past the Kings Chair to a road (grid ref. SK250546). Turn right along the road for a short way. On your left is a gate leading onto the High Peak Trail as it goes east towards Middleton Top. The High Peak Trail follows the former track bed of the Cromford & High Peak Railway. If you need a short break, then approximately 200 metres down the trail is a former railway cottage with some picnic benches beside the trail. This makes a pleasant stop and also allows you to view the impressive incline just to the east of the station. 5. Between the road and the former station, turn left on a signed footpath (grid ref. SK252546). This leads across fields to a wide track. Turn left on this track and continue to a footpath junction (grid ref SK248556). Turn left here alongside a wall towards New Harboro Farm.

Health, Beauty & Fitness 6. The path goes to the right here before starting to climb onto Harboroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Rocks. A short diversion off the path to the trig point on the summit is a worthwhile diversion. The path descends to reach the High Peak Trail. Turn right.

7. After about a kilometre (grid ref SK236556), take the footpath on the left â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Limestone Trail. This leads uphill and then descends past a small Brassington farm to reach Manystones Lane (grid ref. SK234550). Turn right along this lane, left at the first junction and start the descent into Brassington village. It is more pleasant to go right at the first fork following a minor lane into the village. There is a pub and a convenient bench in the churchyard also makes a perfect place for a break.

8. To continue, descend down the lane keeping the pub on your right to reach the main road through the village. 9. Reaching this main road, the onward footpath is opposite reached via a farmyard almost straight ahead. The path then crosses a couple of pastures before climbing steeply over grass to reach a wall (grid ref. SK234542). Cross the wall and turn right. The path is obvious as it contours across the hillside. 10. Reaching a gravel lane go straight across, climbing slightly before starting the final descent into Carsington village. The route is never in doubt and you soon reach a gate leading into a tarmac lane (grid ref. SK248535). Continue along the lane past cottages into the centre of the village where you retrace your steps back to the car.

Wellness Matters Why Are People Choosing Aesthetic Treatments?

There is much more to aesthetic treatment than meets the eye. It is a combination of science, art and medicine.

Aesthetic treatments are becoming much more mainstream; it’s an area that is growing exponentially. Progression in scientific and medical technology are driving these advances. The popularity of aesthetic treatments is attributed to the fact that minimal invasive “tweakments” can restore or rejuvenate a patient to their former self or enhance their appearance. Aesthetic medicine is a broad term that focuses on altering or improving appearances through the treatments of conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, moles, cellulite, excess fat etc. However, there is so much more to aesthetic medicine than is portrayed in mainstream and social media. The images that make the news are not what aesthetic medicine is about. The treatments are much more popular with the older generation, but they are just keeping it more private. The approach is varied, with the older generation (40 – 60’s) interested in restoration and the younger (20’s – 30’s) in beautification. From the age of 28 our anatomy starts to change. The bone around our eyes (orbit), cheeks, mouth, chin and jaw are resorbed which means the bone around the eyes are getting bigger but the cheeks, chin and jaw line smaller. The ligaments are slacker and there is a loss of our normal anatomical fat pads which are either absorbed or slide down causing the dreaded jowls. The bone loss creates hollowness of our eyes, (tear troughs), the darker circle under our eyes, loss of cheek bones and wrinkles around our mouths with our lips curling inwards. The skin is also becoming drier with loss of collagen and elasticity and formation of fine lines and wrinkles, including ‘frown lines’. The skin is dull, pigmented and has old age spots. The chin turns upwards and the nasal hollows increase. These changes are now much easier to restore or prevent due to advances in aesthetic medicine.

Every angle of a patient’s anatomy is considered at rest and in movement; the underlying bony structure is considered and treatment given accordingly. The focus is on natural restoration, not the grotesque caricatures published in social media. Fillers are now so technologically advanced and made out of hyaluronic acid based on the body’s own natural hyaluronic acid. Different strengths are used for different structures and developed to blend in with the tissues to create a more natural result which is not affected by movement such as smiling. Other fillers stimulate collagen, creating tightening of the skin and acting as a moisturiser under the skin, which plumps and tightens. Muscle relaxants are used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles but also manipulate eyebrows to stop frowning, reduce nasal flaring or chins turning up. It can be used in hair growth and stopping excessive sweating. Medical grade skincare and peels are used to increase dermal turnover resulting in younger, rejuvenated skin free of blemishes and marks, giving a dewy, healthy look. ‘Vampire techniques’ use the patient’s own blood to stimulate fibroblasts which, in turn, stimulate growth factors and collagen crucial for tissue regeneration. Nutritional drips and tablets are now used to renew cells, help against acne, scarring, improve collagen and skin moisturisation and nourishment. A plethora of modalities exist to support restoration, regeneration, beautification and nourishment. Ageing as we know it is now becoming a thing of the past and aesthetics is an evolving medicine to support patients in living their best lives. Footnotes â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;My feet are really sore.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; This is the most common reason people give when I ask why they have contacted me for help. The most common causes of soreness turn out to be hard skin or corns or, more usually, a combination of the two. Hard skin is the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way of protecting the foot from pressure and friction. Unfortunately, when too much skin is produced it actually makes the problem worse by increasing the pressure on the affected area until a tiny piece of skin is under so much pressure that the blood supply is cut off and it dies. This is when it becomes a corn and becomes very painful. The body then decides to produce more hard skin to protect you from the pain and, from then on, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a nasty vicious circle. The only way to give relief from corn pain is by removing the excess dead skin to relieve the pressure on the corn and, if possible, allowing healthy skin to re-grow. Maintenance from then on depends on the site of the corn and can be padding or silicon protectors. The reality is that in most cases they will need periodic treatment to keep them under control unless we can take away the cause of the pressure which, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sad to say, is often difficult or impossible in the case of long standing problems. Gardening Setting Boundaries Garden boundaries mark the borders between properties, can help divide a garden into different areas, or can hide an eyesore or the garden from view. They can form an interesting and attractive part of the garden, so what are the options? Stylish Pleaching Pleaching creates a living boundary whilst minimising the space the boundary takes up at soil level. You pleach by removing all side growths up to the desired height, thus forming clear stems. The developing shoots higher up can be trained into a system of wires, forming a fan-like display of branches. The gap between the trunks could be left unfilled, or a more densely clipped hedge or a fence can be installed, increasing privacy while allowing space for ground-level planting. Classic Walls A wall made from good quality bricks in the same colours as those from which the house is constructed will be long-lasting, sturdy and look great. Brick walls can help to keep garden plants warmer, so make use of this for more tender plantings. Attach galvanised straining wires, held taut between vine eyes, to make a support system for plants. Blooming Boundary Many roses can be grown as hedging and look stunning, as well as helping to fill your garden with a magical perfume whilst they are in bloom. They can be grown next to another boundary, such as a short retaining wall.

Hurdles Hazel hurdles are popular for a rustic look. They can be bought as ready-made panels or a hurdle maker can construct the fence in situ. They usually have one pale face where the hazel stems have been split to reveal their woody insides, whilst the other face is darker and still bark-covered. A good filter for wind in a gusty site, their disadvantage is that they are not long lasting. Dry Stone Walls A truly classic look, dry stone walling is a specialist skill giving a lovely boundary, especially within the garden, perhaps around the edge of a raised bed or to create a seating area. Small plants such as the fleshy-leaved Sempervivums or houseleeks can be grown in gaps between the stones. Cheerful Colours Less-than-attractive concrete blocks or similar materials look better if painted with masonry paint. Clean and thoroughly dry the area beforehand and use a suitable paint for the surface. Classic Hedging A well-planted and well-maintained hedge is timeless, though it needs a few years to establish. For a dense effect, plant two staggered rows of hedging plants, with plants about 45cm (18in) apart within the rows. Keep the young hedge well-watered and fed during the first couple of years, pruning as necessary for a dense green boundary. Added Interest Break up a long expanse of boundary by including a feature, perhaps a garden seat or an arbour, with hedge plants behind and trained into a roof above the seat. Short Story A Nasty Case of the Whiffs “What a nasty pong!” Lisa said, winding up her window. “They must be muck-spreading these fields.” Gareth had noticed the smell a few miles back, but had chosen to say nothing. Diane, Lisa’s sister, had picked them up from the airport. He was tired after a long flight, and uncomfortably squashed in the back of Diane’s coupe with Lisa’s pink suitcase on the seat next to him. He strongly suspected that the smell was coming from inside it. “Wind your window down again, babes,” Diane said. “It’s not coming from outside.”

“We’ll see,” Lisa said, rolling up her sleeves. Gareth pulled out the offending suitcase. “I just want to say that my heart was in the right place,” Gareth said, unzipping the case. “You know that bottle of designer perfume I gave you last night?” “What about it?” Lisa asked suspiciously.

Lisa hurriedly wound her window down and gasped the fresh air.

“Well, a bloke outside the resort was selling them for a fraction of the price,” Gareth said. “I figured it was a fake, but,” he swallowed, “I didn’t think you’d notice the difference.”

“I can’t smell anything,” Gareth lied.

Diane and Lisa gasped in unison.

“I’m pulling over,” Diane said, indicating. “It’s like something died in here, I can taste it.”

“The bottle must have leaked,” Gareth finished, then added unnecessarily, “Obviously they didn’t get the smell quite right.”

Diane pulled into the layby, and Lisa tipped her seat forward so that Gareth could climb out. He looked at the suitcase. It was just a matter of time before his guilty secret would be exposed. He stood on the grass verge with his hands buried in his pockets while Diane sniffed inside the car. Straightening up, she announced, “It’s Lisa’s suitcase.” Lisa’s mouth dropped open. “I put all my dirty clothes in a plastic bag. I don’t have anything smelly.” “It absolutely stinks”, Diane said “and I’m not driving another second with that in my car.” “We’re not just leaving it here,” Lisa protested, “all my holiday gear’s in it.” Gareth sighed. “Alright, I think I know what’s making the smell.” “What?” Lisa snapped. “Have you put something in my suitcase?” “No.” Gareth sighed. “If I tell you, promise you won’t get angry?”

“Quite right?” Lisa said. “It smells like the barnyard of death. Just get the bottle out.” Holding his nose Gareth gingerly opened the lid of the case. “What’s that?” Lisa peered at the contents. “That isn’t my beach towel.” “You’re right,” Gareth agreed in surprise, lifting up the faded towel, “it isn’t.” As he did, something large and white slid out and fell onto the grass. “Good grief.” Diane stepped back in terror. “That stinks, what is it?” Gareth kicked it with his toe. “It’s a wheel of very ripe Camembert,” he decided. Then he looked up at Lisa. “You’ve picked up the wrong suitcase from the airport carousel.” “Who’s got my case then?” Lisa wailed. “Someone who really likes cheese?” Gareth offered, unhelpfully. The Diary of a Local Mum Holidays to Remember Very few people’s holidays have gone to plan this year – from cancelled flights, to travel restrictions, to quarantine periods – for many reasons, a lot of us have either chosen to or been forced to rethink our plans and, often at the last minute, book a different kind of getaway. Celebrating a ‘special’ birthday this year I’d decided last winter that, for once, I’d a) plan ahead and b) splash out on holidays in 2020. That’ll teach me! We had a beach holiday and a city break booked but sadly neither trip was meant to be. However, after spending much more time at home than usual over the last few months, getting away somewhere – anywhere – was fairly high up on the priority list; a change of scene was very much needed. Having already had two lots of flights cancelled, we were reluctant to take to the skies so a holiday in the UK it was – and, after exploring a few options (and kindly being offered a few days’ accommodation in a family member’s caravan) we settled on a couple of camping trips: the first in the aforementioned caravan, the second in our trusty old tent. The weather is always the biggest factor with a break in the UK. From one day to the next the weather can totally transform your experience of the same location. We were really fortunate with the weather in the caravan. Typically, less so in the tent when we were joined at times by rain, howling winds and plummeting night temperatures. Well, I suppose that’s what you get for camping in the wilds of Buxton! When I was young, more or less every holiday was a camping trip and I have very fond memories of these canvas covered breaks from life as we know it (a few less fond ones too, but I’ll gloss over them!). From the moment you leave home, car piled high with everything you could possibly need, a camping trip is

always a holiday with a difference. The freedom of a campsite is wonderful, especially to kids, and even the more tedious aspects like battling to get the tent up, trekking to the toilets and alfresco dishwashing are an adventure in themselves. It may not always be relaxing in the traditional sense, but I love how, after a day or two, everyone becomes noticeably more chilled out about things (either through choice or sleep deprivation) – I wouldn’t dream of wandering down my street in my PJs but on a campsite it’s practically compulsory. You can have an entire conversation with a stranger at the water tap with bed hair and no one will bat an eyelid! Many people say you should never pay to stay anywhere that’s not as nice as your own home, and I agree that ‘downgrading’ from your usual day-to-day lifestyle for fun is an odd concept, but there is something strangely magical about it... From playing rounders to endless card games, toasting marshmallows to late night tales round the campfire, there are so many ‘traditions’ that make camping special and unlike any other holiday. The kids run wild, everyone’s filthy and your hair permanently smells of smoke. Of course, there are the soggy clothes and wet tents, freezing nights and deflating airbeds that put it in a category of its own, too – but, for a few nights, it’s good to take the rough with the smooth, get out the dry shampoo, layer up with every item of clothing you can find, and enjoy getting back to nature. There’s also something really satisfying about packing away and leaving nothing but a flattened patch of grass to mark the place that you called ‘home’ for a short while. Of course, it’s also reeeaaallly nice to get back to your proper home and appreciate a soft bed, the wonders of electricity, heating and a very long bath… Ahhhhhh!

Hobbies A Micro-brew Hobby with Macro Potential A recent study carried out by a London estate agent showed that microbreweries now outperform the so-called ‘Cappuccino Index’ (which measures how many new coffee shops have opened) as an indicator that a neighbourhood is “on the up”. The popularity of microbreweries – small factories set up to produce craft beers, ciders and lagers – is undeniable, but they are simply doing what home brewers have done for years, on a larger scale. It’s good to know that many of the most successful factory owners started out with a simple brewing kit in their kitchen. Rob Witt, who runs a multi award-winning Nottingham micro-brewery, acknowledges that brewing at home is the best way to learn. He says: “I have a lot of people coming to the brewery asking about setting up themselves, but they have never even home brewed. It takes time to understand the finer points of the process and how the many ingredients taste and can work together.” It’s not just the taste of hand-crafted brews that is persuading more people to take up the hobby; the cost of beer is an incentive too. At well under £1 a pint for the home-made stuff, you’ll understand why home brewing is so popular.

Starting out The simplest way to try your hand at brewing beer is to buy a kit. You’ll also need a fermenting bin, some water and a warm place to leave your brew. You can purchase kits to match virtually any style of beer, cider or lager. They generally consist of a sachet of dried yeast and one or two cans of concentrated malt extract. The amount of malt extract not only determines the flavour and body of

the finished beer, it also provides the fermentable sugars that produce the alcohol, therefore the more malt you add, the stronger the brew. The ‘fermenting bin’ is a big bucket large enough to contain all the water required in the recipe. A standard 25ltr/40 pint fermenter should easily cope with all your brewing needs, as most beer, cider and lager kits make 36-40 pints. Beer is mostly made of water and once the liquid has been added, the mixture is known as ‘wort’. At this stage the yeast will be activated, but be warned! Many home brewing experiments fail because the temperature is allowed to rise above or fall below the level required. In summer it’s easier to maintain a constant temperature, but you may need to wrap your fermentation bin in an insulated jacket or use a thermostatic heater during the winter. The fermentation process is complete when the yeast has converted as much of the sugar as it can to alcohol. More sugar is added to the beer at the bottling stage to improve the brew’s foam, aroma and taste. This process – which ultimately produces the carbonated beer drink we’re all familiar with – typically takes around two weeks and at this stage you’ll need all your reserves of patience! When the moment to drink your freshly made brew arrives, you’ll have a real sense of achievement. You may not feel ready to run a microbrewery just yet, but you’ll certainly be more popular with your friends and neighbours! By Kate McLelland

Book Reviews: Inspiring Children’s Books This issue we’re looking at children’s books that inspire, educate and open minds: Boy at the Back of the Class Onjali Rauf There’s a new boy in class. Ahmet is shy, scared and doesn’t speak much English, but the nine-year-old narrator is determined to make friends with him. And, when it turns out that Ahmet could be forever separated from his family due to changes to the refugee laws, the narrator hatches a plan to help. A great book for both children and adults, The Boy at the Back of the Class gently introduces readers to subjects such as refugees, bullying, racism and fairness. My eleven-year-old and I loved it. Spy Toys Mark Powers and Tim Wesson The Raggy Dolls meets Toy Story in this action packed adventure. When three toys are rejected as not being fit for purpose, they’re soon recruited for a new mission – protecting the Prime Minister’s son. From a short-tempered doll to a less-than-cuddly teddy bear, these characters help to prove that differences can be strengths. My eight-year-old will find any excuse not to read, but he happily devoured all three books in the series. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World The latest instalment in the popular Rebel Girls series reveals the stories of athletes, entertainers, business women, activists, creators, scientists, politicians and other inspiring women. Each one is an immigrant and many of them

have had to overcome significant challenges to succeed. The mini-biographies only take a few minutes to read and each one is accompanied by an illustration, so it’s a good book for dipping in and out of. Wonder R. J. Palacio While some children want to be the centre of attention, Auggie is desperate just to fit in. But his facial disfigurement attracts stares, taunts and even screams. We meet Auggie as he’s about to start school for the first time, after years of being home-schooled. Above anything, Wonder is about friendship, families and acceptance. Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Dr Seuss Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is a rousing, rhyming call to the reader to follow their ambitions, forge their own destiny and do it all with a spring in their step. While it’s very optimistic and upbeat, there are also a few reminders that life doesn’t always go according to plan and that sometimes you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try another path. Matilda Roald Dahl Matilda has been pushed around and kept down her whole life. Her parents openly dislike her. Her headteacher is a sadistic bully. But what they don’t know is that Matilda is a genius, and has unlocked a part of her brain that allows her to do some pretty miraculous things. Local History The Rise and Fall of Southern Derbyshire Community Health Council Community Health Councils were established by legislation in 1974 to represent the patient’s interests within the National Health Service and monitor the service provided. Each was an independent group of members drawn from local authorities, voluntary organisations and other sections of the community. Derbyshire had three CHCs: one for each health district of North, Central and South. A reorganisation in 1982 of the health districts combined Central and South into the larger Southern Derbyshire Health Authority which served half a million people and looked after hospitals, health centres and clinics. Their two CHCs merged and Southern Derbyshire Community Health Council came into being in July 1982 to represent that population, supported by a small office of paid staff. Much of the work of the Council was carried out through its working groups and committees, and the members were kept informed through speakers from the health service at training days, attendance at conferences and visits. An idea of the extent of their role can be seen from this extract from the first report. “Community Health Councils are consulted by the main administrative and management bodies of the NHS with regard to their plans and intentions. CHCs can use their own initiative to put forward their views and give advice. They look at how local services measure up to recommended standards and can have a constructive influence on the shaping and direction of health service planning and policy. The CHC makes an Annual Report on its activities to the Regional Health Authority, on which the District Health Authority must publish its comments and an account of steps taken on advice or proposals put to it by the Council. CHCs have the power to enter and inspect hospitals and other health premises, and must be consulted before decisions are taken on any closure, substantial development or variation in the service.” The Community Health Council was keen to hear from members of the public about any concerns they had

with the health service, and it was able to offer advice and support to help patients through the complaints system. A description of the work of the Council is beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that a good relationship developed between the Derbyshire health community and the Council to the great benefit of both and the patients they served. Governmental reorganisations of various sectors of the NHS over the years led to many reviews of ways of working among the CHC and health community alike. Nevertheless, the patient’s voice retained an increasing prominence in the way health care was provided. In 1999, a Commission was set up to review the future of Community Health Councils, and the members looked forward to an increasing role in patient participation within the health service. The unexpected outcome was the NHS plan in 2000 announcing the abolition of CHCs by March 2002. Shocked by this decision, the members nevertheless decided to continue their work as set out by the Executive Committee until abolition, and to lend their expertise to the organisations which were to replace them. The moving of the abolition date to March 2003, then to September and then December 2003 created great difficulties due to loss of staff and members as they moved on to other things, but those left carried on as diligently as before. In the final annual report of 2002/2003 the Chairman wrote: “The work of this CHC has come to an end. It has upheld the finest traditions of voluntary service to the community.”

Raising Awareness of Courier Fraud In recent months we’ve seen an increased number of reports of courier fraud. How can you spot the signs and what should you do if you, or someone you know, falls victim to a scam? What is courier fraud? Courier fraud is when a fraudster telephones a victim pretending to be a police officer or bank official. The fraudster then cons the victim into revealing their PIN and credit or debit card details. For example, they may say they are a police officer or an official from your bank (they may even confirm some easily obtainable personal details). They will tell you something like: • a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card that needs sorting out • someone has been arrested using your details and cards To convince you the call is genuine you may be asked to call your bank using the phone number on the back of your card, but the scammer keeps the line open at their end so when you dial you’re unknowingly connected straight back to them or their friends. They’ll either ask you for your PIN or ask you to key it into your phone (no bank or other legitimate service will ever ask you for your PIN). The scammer then sends a courier or taxi to pick up

the card from your home. Once they have your card and PIN they can spend your money. This is just one example. There are many other ‘scams’ involving money, bank accounts or counterfeit goods. What to do If you receive such a call you should not give out any personal information and hang up the call immediately. Wait 5 minutes and ensure you can hear a dial tone before calling 101; to call your bank please use the number found on the back of your card. The police or your bank will never ask you to transfer money to a safe account for fraud or investigation reasons, even if they say it is in your name, nor will they ever send someone to your home to collect cash, pin, cards or cheque books, or expensive items. If you have family or friends who are vulnerable in any way please make them aware of this scam. Poem: Hugs Our hugs have all gone missing – we need them back real soon They’re as urgent as the vaccine, to keep us COVID safe – immune A hug to say ‘I’ve missed you’, ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘well done’ A hug that helps heal heartache, or a ‘bounce off’ hug for fun A gentle hug that holds a new born, a bear hug that squeezes tight Those for bedtime or ‘good morning’, or ‘everything will be alright’ A hug’s a precious feeling we’d never thought we’d be without Of all the things on hold right now, a hug’s right up there, there’s no doubt So when this wretched time is over and we’re told it’s safe to do Our arms will do what’s natural and wrap round loved ones close to you And it won’t be just a brief one – one arm that reaches, side by side We’ll be lunging, launching, leaping, with aching arms now open wide And, once safe within our clutches, clasping tightly, holding firm No ‘huggee’ will want to wriggle free, back off, retreat or squirm We’ve all missed that close core contact – a simple act to show we care When words can often fail us – one hug – it’s done. We might not be an industry that has been revolutionised by people having to work from home, but there is no doubt that the coronavirus lockdown has the potential to change the way that we work forever.

This service has always been available, but the take-up has not been anywhere near the levels we have seen over the past few months, and one of the few bright moments have been those where families have received messages from friends and relatives during the service, telling them that they are watching along.

I’m not talking about the wearing of masks, the ban on giving people a hug and the limits on numbers attending funerals – these I can well live without and I can’t wait until the social distancing measures we have to work with are lifted. Instead, I am talking about the way in which technology has helped us to function in a way that would have been unthinkable just 10 years ago and has helped us to continue to offer an efficient, professional and compassionate service in the face of unprecedented restrictions. In my view, the lockdown has moved our industry forward at least five years, if not 10. Although we have always had the technology at our fingertips, since March we have made full use of online resources such as emailing, document sharing tools and the internet meeting platforms such as Zoom and Skype.

When applied like this, technology can be wonderful, while the efficiency that it is bringing us, I hope, will make planning a funeral and looking after the paperwork less painful. I have written before about how our industry, while forever changing, does have a tendency to change slower than others, and I have no problem with that, because modernising something isn’t always to people’s advantages if it means they lose the human element. However, coronavirus has shown us that change is possible as long as it’s the right change – and it doesn’t mean that we lose the human element that is at the centre of our business.
