Take care and we’ll be back soon with our Christmas and New Year

Welcome to the October/November issue of All Things Local, as we move into autumn after a scorching hot summer.

Autumn of course brings darker nights and usually more inclement weather, but there’s still a lot to look forward to! This transitional season is associated with delicious foods and fruits, star gazing, autumnal walks, beautiful colours and, of course, the celebrations of Halloween and Bonfire Night.

WELCOME LETTER

So, without further ado, we’ll leave you to delve into all that our autumn issue has to offer. Enjoy! 2023

Please be aware that not everyone celebrates this occasion and some may feel intimidated by it so, if you’re Trick or Treating, please only knock on doors where pumpkins are displayed. Likewise, while Bonfire Night is enjoyed by many, some people and pets can be fearful so please be considerate of others when planning your events.

Whether you go all out for a huge Halloween pageant as they do in America or prefer something a bit lower-key, you can enjoy all kinds of activities and events from fancy dress parties to carving pumpkins, bobbing apples or ‘Trick or Treating’.

While the sun and dry weather hasn’t been without its difficulties and nature is certainly crying out for some rainfall, we were able to enjoy some lovely weather and, despite a few occasions where it all got a bit much and we had to hide from the heat, it has afforded us plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor living and exploring our beautiful local area.

Oh, and don’t forget to put your clocks back an hour on 30th October, otherwise you’ll be an hour early for your Halloween and bonfire parties!

As always, All Things Local is bringing you even more reasons to celebrate this autumn, and in this issue you can win a Sunday lunch for two courtesy of The Spotted Cow in Holbrook in our Prize Crossword on page 6, or a bottle of Champagne in our Champagne Sudoku on page 25.

Put as simply as possible, a Trust will arise where a person transfers property or assets into the name of their chosen Trustees, for the Trustees to hold that property or those assets for certain purposes and on certain terms, for the benefit of specific persons or a group of people.

It is important to understand the difference between different pension types. Some pensions are pots of money which can sometimes be converted into cash (subject to tax). Other pensions simply give a person the right to receive an income from a particular date until their death.

To advertise contact Ruth: T: 01332 883140 ruth@allthingslocal.co.uk72 Cassandra Worton, Partner with Shacklocks LLP and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, explains some of the mystery behind Trusts. Trusts are a very well established part of English law, but are generally not available in many European countries. So what are they, and how did they come about?

At Shacklocks we have set up a number of charitable trusts over the 150 years or so we have been in business and we still look after those trusts today. One of the charitable trusts we look after, for example, was established by a will in the 1940’s to provide accommodation for elderly residents. 70 years later the trust is still providing that accommodation. Another of the trusts we look after was set up by a client who wanted to help people with particular medical conditions. Her kindness has enabled her trustees to provide financial support to a gifted young musician who has experienced a number of health issues that have interfered with her education, to enable that child to be educated in the most appropriate Aenvironment.CharitableTrust can be set up either during your lifetime with savings and investments built up already, or alternatively through a specially prepared Will that will only take effect following your death and will therefore not deprive you of capital or income during your lifetime.

In fact, when it comes to making a Will, there are all sorts of opportunities open to you to make your Will what you need it to be. And why wouldn’t you? Why settle for ‘simple’ or ‘standard’ when there is so much more you can do with your Will? What sort of things do we talk about in our meetings? Well, let’s take one example that is not at all unusual. A client may be concerned that a beneficiary will struggle to manage an inheritance, for example because they find it hard to manage money or property, or they have health problems or other vulnerabilities. But did you know, the gifts in a Will do not have to be ‘absolute’? You can use your Will to arrange for an inheritance not to be passed outright, and to be managed until the beneficiary is ready to receive it.

a Thing as a

1. Pension sharing. This is where one pension is divided to create essentially two pensions, a reduced pension for the member of the pension scheme and a new pension for the other person.

Often it is necessary to involve other experts, for example pension actuaries, who will produce comprehensive reports to assist in the division of pension assets. The information given above is necessarily general and cannot be relied upon in any particular case.

Benbens@shacklocks.co.uk.Stubbins

Business & Professional

3. Offsetting. This is where the pensions are left untouched but the share of other assets are adjusted to take into account the value of pensions.

From time to time, we receive enquiries from callers asking for a ‘simple’ or ‘standard’ Will. But what is a ‘simple’ or ‘standard’ Will? After we have taken the time to sit down and talk through with our clients what it is they wish to achieve, and what might be available to them, we often hear our clients say, “I didn’t think of that.”

Our team at Shacklocks have a particular speciality in preparing arrangements of this kind and also of acting as professional trustees to enable wishes to be fulfilled and instructions to be followed. If you are thinking of supporting charities through your Will or during your lifetime with a lump sum, why not talk to us about the different ways in which we can help you benefit those good causes, and how to make the most of the tax rules that enable a charitable cause to benefit.

2. Pension attachment. This is where a court makes an order directing that some of the pension payable to one person is paid to the other.

Whilst the idea that someone travelling abroad may leave their property in Trust to be managed whilst they are away is still very useful today, Trusts may be used closer to home to protect and manage property or money in other circumstances too. For example, a parent may set up a Trust in their lifetime or through their Will for a child, or for an adult son or daughter who is not able to manage their own affairs perhaps because of disability or mental capacity issues. A married person may provide in their Will for their surviving spouse to have a life interest in their half of the family home thereby protecting that half of the home for the next generation. A Trust may be used where someone receives damages as a result of a personal injury or clinical negligence claim.

There are obviously many different pension schemes in existence. Each will probably be different to the next. It is very important that you receive the right advice and that the true value of each pension is understood and shared fairly.

A couple may set up a Trust to keep their family assets in the bloodline in case of changes in family and marital arrangements which may take the assets out of the family, or someone with a second family may set up a Trust to make special arrangements for their two families. A person with Charitable intentions may set up a Trust in their lifetime or on death for the benefit of those who they particularly wish to help in the future, and by doing so leave a lasting legacy: many of the charities we see now may have been set up in this way. These are all types of Trust.

To advertise contact Ruth: T: 01332 883140 ruth@allthingslocal.co.uk68 When a marriage or a civil partnership breaks down, consideration needs to be given to how the assets of the union are to be divided. Assets can include the home, savings, cars and other valuables but also pensions. Indeed the pensions can be the most valuable asset and care has to be exercised in how they are treated and how they are divided. Usually, pensions are dealt with in one of the following ways:

Business & Professional

And there are many other scenarios which can be addressed when making a Will. A client might want their husband or wife to have a roof over their head whilst at the same time ensuring as much of the family assets as possible pass down the blood line of the family. A client might want to ensure that one member of the family does not pressurise another, or may want to exclude someone who is estranged, or to look after those who are dependent on them or have cared for them, or to look after children from a previous marriage. And that is not to mention the importance of tax planning when it comes to making a Will. So, if there is such a thing as a ‘simple’ or ‘standard’ Will, it may not be everything you need. And, whilst there is no right or wrong answer as to how your Will is prepared, it is really important that your adviser identifies what you would like to achieve, what might cause a problem, and what might be available to you, and explores them with you. Of course, the final decision as to what you want your Will to do is always up to you.

Before you even think about dealing with pensions you need to know their value. The starting point is often the provision of a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (“CETV”). This needs to be provided in all cases. Whilst the CETV is important, further information is often needed in terms of benefit statements so that the full terms of the pension can be considered.

Legal Matters: Is There

The information in this article is for general guidance only and no reliance should be placed upon it. Such Simple Will?

Legal Matters: Trusts BUSINEww[knowledge+application]w.shacklocks.co.ukSS&PROFES SIONAL Legal ShacklocksMattersSolicitors

The difficulty is that the CETV for one scheme might produce completely different pension benefits to the CETV in another scheme. You might share a particular pension equally but the reality in terms of what you might each receive in your pocket could be significantly different. The court is generally concerned about the effect of a pension sharing order, especially when people might have been together for a long time.

In each edition legal advisors from Shacklocks deal with important legal topics. This month Marion Vesey (pictured) invites us to think about making a decision that will benefit future generations. Making a Will is a serious business. It is a time which gives many people cause to stop and think about how they want to be remembered when they are gone. Many people are attracted by the idea of doing something to help others less fortunate than themselves after they pass away, particularly if their family are adequately provided for or if they have no close family. Whilst some still like the idea of supporting major national charities, there are many who prefer to benefit more local causes or causes close to their heart, possibly where they have had a personal involvement or received support during their lifetime. Something that our team will discuss with clients in this situation is the idea of setting up their own charitable trust which can continue to provide support for charitable causes of their choosing long after they have passed away. Creating your own charity means that your trustees can provide support to those who need help most. There can be a great sense of satisfaction in knowing that your trustees will carry out your wishes after you have gone and that your name will be associated with such good deeds even after you are no longer around.

The CETV provided by a pension scheme might not be a true representation of the value of that pension. In some cases, especially some public sector pensions, the CETV provided can significantly understate the true worth of a pension.

Call us at Shacklocks to talk about how we can help you to help your favourite local causes.

To better understand Trusts we can take a look back to the times of the Crusades. Trusts first began to take shape in medieval England when men were travelling abroad to join the Crusades. They would transfer their property to a trusted friend for them to look after, manage and protect until their return, which may not be for many years. The moral obligation imposed on the friend is one of the earliest forms of a Trust, which over the centuries has become embedded in our legal Ifsystem.wefast forward to the present day, the reasons to use a Trust are broadly the same as in medieval England; there are different types of Trusts and there are many different types of situations which may create Trusts. Trusts may be set up in a lifetime, or through a Will following death. Trusts may provide circumstances in which beneficiaries will become absolutely entitled to the Trust Fund, or they may provide flexibility by allowing for discretion to be exercised as to who should benefit.

Shacklocks LLP have been dealing with Trusts for many years, though not quite as far back as the Crusades! If you would like to know more about Trusts and how they may be of help in your circumstances contact Cassandra Worton or Richard Farmer at Shacklocks LLP on 01773 822333 or 01623 626141 or email cassandraw@shacklocks.co.uk or Cassandrarichardf@shacklocks.co.uk.Worton

Bank accounts

The best-known option is a cashback credit card. This will give you a percentage of your spending back as money, usually sent to your bank account. You may get a fixed percentage on all spending, a percentage that depends how much you spend, or a varying percentage that depends exactly what you are spending on. Watch for any monthly fees and be sure these won’t wipe out the

ruth@allthingslocal.co.uk

Finally, don’t forget about supermarket loyalty cards. They don’t pay cash but do offer discounts on future shops. These days, the best value often comes from taking advantage of tie-ups with other retailers and programs, though this does mean doing some research and keeping up to date with the latest policies.

The interest rates on cashback credit cards are often quite high, so make sure you pay the balance off in full every month, preferably by direct debit. And don’t get cash advances such as bank machine withdrawals as, again, the rates can be high.

For example, earlier this year anyone using the option to convert Sainsbury’s Nectar card points to Avios air miles effectively boosted their cashback by 25 per cent – though of course, that’s only worthwhile for people who planned to spend their air miles. Remember also that how much financial benefit you get from air miles can vary depending on the type of flight you book.

Loyalty cards

Another option is to get a bank account that offers some form of cashback, often called a reward account.

Credit cards

Thebenefits.key rule for using such cards is that you should only use them for purchases that you would have made anyway: don’t buy stuff just to boost your cashback.

There’s often a small monthly fee, but if you are paying regular bills you can usually come out ahead. Check the conditions carefully though: some rewards accounts have a minimum amount that you must pay in each month.

10 years ago, Belper Independent Financial Solutions was formed after its founder (me, Kevin Glover) was made redundant from The Derbyshire Building Society. Since then, Belper has seen the loss of The Derbyshire, Woolworths, Somerfield, Thomas Cook and Britannia Building Society to name but a few long-standing institutions that are now confined to history Generations of people have been served or been customers of these organisations. You are probably one. State Pension Age has changed several times and will most likely do so again At least interest rates have not changed much! Rubbish then and not much better Ctodayonsider this joining the EU was considered the right decision once upon a time. From my dining room in 2009, to an office in Heanor, back to Belper and now to the present location, much has changed including the greyness of my hair and the size of my waistline! Now as a team of 8 we have seen the client base expand over the years. ‘Generous’ successive Chancellors introduce new legislation impacting the public and signposting the need for financial advice. What about you what has changed in your lives over the last 10 years? How many jobs have you had? Has your family extended or tragedy struck? How many times have you moved house? How many pension schemes have you been a member of and simply left, through one reason or another? How many cars, partners and other life events have occurred? How many investments have you made and when were they last reviewed and looked at? My point is

You can’t completely stop spending, but you can earn cash back when you spend. There’s a range of ways to do this, but you need to check the conditions carefully.

Inflation continues to rise, and with it the gap between your outgoings and income shrinks.

The newest option is to use specialist apps and online sites. These aren’t operated by banks or credit card providers, but rather by independent businesses. In principle, all you need to do is visit the site or app before being passed on to the retailer and you’ll then earn a percentage of any spending as cashback. However, make sure you check prices carefully and see if you could get it cheaper elsewhere, outweighing the rewards. Be particularly wary of any membership costs. Often such services are free or have a free tier, but they can have monthly fees that may come as a surprise and reduce the overall benefit.

Money Matters: 10 Years of Belper IFS: Our First Decade that the need for financial advice and a solution should not be seen as a one off. Financial products and solutions were probably right at the time, but just how much has changed since their inception? Investment funds (whether held in pension wrappers or alternative structures such as Stocks and Shares ISAs), are mostly run by fund managers who are also human beings. As humans they may retire, defect to other companies, or run out of luck! Solutions that may have been right at the start may no longer be suitable or effective. Leading fund managers in 2009 may no longer be leading fund managers as we approach 2020. In April 2015, pension regulations changed. They will almost certainly change again. Pensions from prior to this time may no longer be suitable but just how would you know? So, as you sit munching your turkey over the festive period, consider how many of these questions apply to you and see what may benefit from having a Ireview.s2020 the time to take a look at your financial arrangements once again and get them fit for Wpurpose?ishingyou a happy 2020 and a prosperous next 10 years. Seasonal Joke number 1 beautifully placed in the title – check. Armfuls of ghoulish sweets for putrid pests to purloin – check. Finally, something to make me look like a Zombie (passes mirror and realises final point already achieved!). We are absolutely killing this Halloween season, people (pun number 2)! Ok, I will come down from the silly step. Halloween is a time of year that evokes a lot of different emotional responses. For some it is a time of fabulous fun, dressing up, trick or treating and copious amounts of sweetie eating. For others it is more traditional, drawing on the Gaelic festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season and celebrating what has been while honouring the winter to come. There are those that it creates fear for, those with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. The elderly or those living alone may also feel scared by an unexpected knock at the door or a passing crowd of horror-clad kids. For me it is the time to demonstrate the fullness of our generosity of spirit (actually didn’t intend a pun there!). What I mean by this is that we each afford another the generosity of our spirit and consideration. So, to those who wish to throw themselves into trick or treat then I say have a spooktacular time (3!). If you wish to be present in a more pagan observance, then I wish you plentiful pumpkins and a happy harvest. And, to those who just wish it was November already and Halloween had been and gone, I truly respect your fears and want you to have the confidence to convey them.

6. They regenerate arms If they lose a limb, they grow another one. Sometimes an octopus sacrifices a limb to escape the jaws of a predator. The regenerated tentacle is as good as new, complete with nerves and suckers. This ability has led researchers to investigate the mechanisms behind it. Perhaps one day we will have the same ability?

World Octopus Day

Like other cephalopods, the octopus propels itself through the ocean using jets of water. They fill their body cavity with water then squirt it through a syphon. They can also walk or crawl on the ocean floor using their strong tentacles. The common octopus can swim at speeds of nearly 25 miles per hour!

The 8th of October. Is there a better date to celebrate World Octopus Day? Fans can look forward to spending 24 hours in admiration of these charming cephalopods.

The female octopus is so focused on the survival of her young that she neglects to feed herself. She protects them from predators and provides them with oxygen until they hatch. Shortly after, she will die.

Here are 8 facts about them:

Often considered as the aliens of the sea, they are definitely different.

5. Camouflage experts Octopus skin changes colour to help them blend in with their surroundings. The mimic octopus goes one stage further. It impersonates other sea-dwelling creatures to protect itself from predators. Amongst others, it can disguise itself as a sea snake, a lionfish and an eel.

1. They’ve got big brains

The octopus is a cephalopod. The word cephalopod means ‘head foot’ in Greek, given that their heads and feet are connected. This group of marine invertebrates also includes squid, cuttlefish and nautilus along with other species. In fact, there are over 800 recorded species so far with more to be discovered.

The octopus uses its suckers for grabbing prey, manipulating objects and even tasting. They also have three hearts. Their powerful beak lets them crack open shells with ease. Their lack of skeleton means they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. The blue-ringed octopus is venomous and known to be one of the most deadly creatures in the sea.

2. There are many species

The most commonly used plural for the octopus is octopuses, but using octopi is perfectly acceptable.

By Jessica White

Considered to be very intelligent, captive octopuses have managed daring and clever escapes from their tanks. They can navigate mazes and even unscrew jars. In the wild, they construct elaborate hiding places and protective barriers. Paradoxically, for a creature of such intelligence, they live relatively short lives. Most octopus species only live for one or two years.

4. Fascinating anatomy

7. Protective parents Octopuses are committed to the survival of their species. Shortly after mating, the male octopus will die. After using up all their energy for growing and mating, they fade away.

There are a huge variety of octopuses. The giant Pacific octopus is the largest species in the world. They can measure over 15 feet long and weigh up to 50 kilograms. The smallest octopus is octopus wolfi. This little specimen can sit on the tip of your finger and weighs less than a gram.

Beer: Beer Speak

By Sean

Word on Wine and is naturally unfiltered or unfined at bottling. The wine can be a bit of a ‘marmite’ wine, as the finished dry wine will have the slight smell and taste that we sometimes associate with wine that is undrinkable.

The one thing I would say to brewers, as an emissary from real Beerlandia, is that if you do choose to put ‘session’ on your label, just know that customers won’t understand that term in the way you do. The vast majority of regular beer drinkers just want a tasty pint and the shortest conceptual route it takes to get there.

Technical Details Grape: Solaris and Siegerrebe Appearance: Clean, dark yellow colour Nose / Aroma: Light nose of oxidised fruit Taste: Hints of citrus with a light finish Alcohol by Volume: 11.5% Food match: Pasta and fish dishes or on its own. Available from: Amber Valley Wines, £20 per bottle (very small quantities made). For more information about Amber Valley Wines, their tours, tastings and to buy their wines, please visit their website www.ambervalleyvineyards.co.uk. I get why they don’t know; craft beer is insanely complex.

I believe that people inside the craft beer bubble vastly overestimate the public’s knowledge and interest level. The word ‘session’ is a great example. In the UK it is often used as a term to indicate a low-ABV beer. When I’m standing with a friend in front of a beer list they’ll often idly ask the meaning of an unfamiliar word, but I’ve generally lost them halfway through my explanation!

The ‘Amber’ wine, sometimes referred to as ‘Golden’, is made by allowing the white grape skins to be oxidized during the fermentation of the wine. Over a period of time the skins, which turn brown, are pushed down into the wine allowing different skins to surface, giving the wine an amber/golden colour. This wine has a third of the wine aged in oak barriques

I was recently introduced to a new, local wine from Amber Valley Wines with grapes grown by Barry Lewis on his vineyard in Wessington near Alfreton. In 2020 he made an experimental batch of wine at home, using an old technique which successfully produced an interesting wine. Barry took a bottle to the vintners at Three Choirs, who have made and bottled his wine in previous years. They liked it so much that they agreed to take a quantity of Barry’s white grapes and replicate the wine. As it was an unusual wine they also decided to make a batch with their own grapes, resulting in their version of the wine which has since been awarded a trophy in the Wines of Great Britain 2022. The wine is called ‘Amber’, not after the vineyard, but the technique which originated in Armenia and Georgia possibly 6000 years ago. This area of Asia is believed to be where wine making started, using indigenous grape vines of the region.

If IPA isn’t their favourite style, they’ll know the word for the beers that are. That might be a style (porter, pilsner), but it might also be a beer (Blue Moon, Guinness).

There’s a Saison, a Vienna lager, a Helles, a Baltic porter, an ESB, something called a DDH DIPA and a wine-barrel-aged “mixed-ferm” wild ale. Really, mixed-ferm? Few beer geeks really understand that garble, I would guess.

I’d guess people understand maybe a half-dozen beer terms, and all incompletely. Lager is shorthand for ‘regular beer.’ It applies to domestic, green-bottle European and Mexican beer. If someone orders a doppelbock and later learns it’s a lager, they will probably be confused. It’s nothing like Budweiser!

Looking at a tap list is a bit like scrutinising a foreign language.

Many beer drinkers have learned to navigate a tap list or an array of pump clips to get the beer they want, but our discussion around beers usually starts and ends with “What would you like?” and “Yeah, it’s great.”

Prices are competitive, with second-generation cars built around 2015 standing at around £17,000. It’s a big, practical car for the money.

The Outlander was one of the ground-breaking hybrid models, and the plug-in hybrid is the go-to choice as it offers super-efficient motoring and the chance of seeing up to 156mpg providing you keep it topped up with electricity.

Early 2018 models of the spacious 530e can be had for under £20,000, so it’s definitely at the top end of our price list. Push that budget higher and you’ll find lowermileage versions, of course.

Fortunately, hybrids have been on sale for a little while now, so there is a reasonable number available in the used market. Let’s take a look.

push toward full-electric vehicles, for many people a hybrid vehicle is a great fit. Combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery means a traditional engine to fall back on, but with the opportunity to benefit from the lower running costs that electrification brings.

Lexus CT Lexus has been using electrical assistance in its cars for quite some time now and has the technology down to a fine art. The CT, a slightly elongated hatchback with a typically sharp Lexus design, is a ‘regular’ hybrid with a 1.8-litre engine and an electric motor and battery. It’s exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone charge, too. Early, high-mileage examples can be had for around £5,500, but reasonable-mileage versions with plenty of equipment are around the £10,000 mark.

First-generationeasily. cars – built around 2015 – can be had for as little as £12,000, though expect to pay slightly more for lower-mileage, higher-spec versions.

The CR-Z arrived in 2010 as a sporty hybrid and thus featured an eye-catching exterior design and a relatively compact body. It combined a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery and, strangely for a hybrid, had a six-speed manual gearbox. But today, with prices hovering around £5,000, the CR-Z makes for an inexpensive left-field hybrid choice. It’ll return over 52mpg and cost just £20 to tax.

prices starting from around £2,000 – though these will be earlier models with seriously high mileage. Later models use a 1.8-litre engine – compared with the older 1.5-litre version – but you’ll still get a very respectable 70.6mpg combined, so it’s ideal for reducing fuel bills.

The BMW 530e could be a great more-refined option. It’s as comfortable and spacious as the regular 5, but has that efficient petrol-electric hybrid setup to help reduce fuel bills.

Volkswagen Golf GTE Fancy something a little sportier? The Golf GTE aimed to combine Golf GTi driver involvement with the efficient running of a hybrid. With a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor with a battery, this plug-in hybrid can slot into everyday life

As you get older you may find you have more barriers to overcome when starting to build exercise into your routine. These can include discomfort and pain in your joints, limited mobility, or maybe a chronic condition such as arthritis or heart disease. I’d recommend speaking to a health care provider if you’re thinking of taking up exercise, although most doctors will encourage you to do so as many conditions benefit from regular exercise, including joint discomfort. Don’t let fear of injury hold you back as balance and strength training can help to reduce the risk of falling, or swimming can help build up your confidence and fitness. If you’re affected by loneliness or isolation, group fitness activities or classes are a great way to help with your health whilst meeting like-minded people.

So, when you force them to work in shoes that aren’t really the right size or shape, or force them to stand on hard floors for hours on end, or walk or run for miles, don’t worry – after all, they are only feet!

We really do take our feet for granted don’t we? After all, they are only feet aren’t they? Perhaps we should think a little bit more about what these unglamorous parts of the body do for us!

This debt will never be repaid So, we’ll just stand and quietly consider The part these brave souls played

The poppies and the people

Poem: Remembrance Day

Each foot contains 26 bones – that’s 52 bones between them or, in other words, over a quarter of the body’s 206 bones. The way that these bones work with each other gives approximately 40 joints in each foot! The joint behind the big toe takes approximately one and a half times your bodyweight each and every time you take a step. Not bad for a joint not much bigger than an Oxo cube. They give us constant feedback about the surface we are walking on and, thanks to all those bones, joints and untold ligaments and muscles, both in the foot and the lower leg, enable us to walk and balance safely on very uneven ground. Even the toenails have an active role by protecting the toes and helping with balance. The skin is three to four times thicker on the heel and ball of the foot than anywhere else on the body, offering protection to the bones and muscles of the foot in everyday use. We even have a pad of fat under the foot which acts as a natural shock absorber which again protects the underlying tissues.

As the nation still remembers Their sacrifices for the cause

For a professional and courteous service please call Paul 07912 749 910 I always carry out a clean, tidy job. “I have been using Paul to sweep my chimney for 3 years now. Dear Sir / Madam, Re: Would you like to sell your house this month?

• I specialise in buying properties very quickly, between 7 and 28 days is my normal purchase period

I hope that you don’t mind my direct approach but I thought that I’d write to ask you if you would like to sell your house quickly? If you are keen to sell within a month with no hassle from agents charging you fees, viewings that waste your time and buyers offering and then backing out, then I can definitely help. I offer a guaranteed purchase of any property which means that all you have to do is give me a call and I’ll give you a price that I guarantee to buy your property at If you decide to sell to me you could have the money in your account within a month.

1st Floor 17 Town BStreetelper DerbyshireDE564EH

If you want to sell quickly then give me a call today 01332 289572 I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

• I can buy with cash so that you don’t get messed around by mortgage lenders slowing things down I pay all your estate agent and solicitor fees - the price I pay is actually what you get

• There is no board outside or advert in the paper, just a fast, smooth, relaxed confidential sale

A Step Back in Time

Shrines of Gaiety

Take My Hand Dolen Perkins-Valdez

Kate Atkinson You know you’re in for a treat when Kate Atkinson releases a new novel and Shrines of Gaiety doesn’t disappoint. Told from the viewpoint of several connected characters living in London in 1926, Shrines of Gaiety follows the fortunes of Nellie Coker – a nightclub owner – and her children.

There’s also Freda, who’s come to London in the hope of becoming a star. And Detective Chief Inspector Frobisher, who’s on a mission to bring down Mrs Coker’s infamous clubs, which he believes are behind a spate of missing girls. Gripping.

SophieFortune-HuntingtoIrwin Kitty and her younger sisters are about to be made homeless. Their parents are dead. The house will need selling to repay their debts. Her fiancé has broken off their engagement. It’s 1818 so Kitty has little hope of supporting herself. That means she needs a wealthy husband, and quickly. Kitty soon sets her sights on a suitor, but his brother sees her for the fortune hunter she really is. Witty and lively, A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting is a whole heap of fun.

Civil Townsend embarks on a career in family planning. It’s 1973 and she has high hopes of helping women to take control of their lives. But amongst her first patients are two young girls – eleven and thirteen. The girls live in virtual squalor and Civil does what she can to help them. Soon it becomes clear that people in power are intent on making life-changing decisions for girls like these two. A saddening insight into a dark period of American history.

Genghis: Birth of an Empire Conn Iggulden Temujin falls into poverty after his father is murdered. In this fictionalised account of Temujin’s life, Conn Iggulden starts to explore how a boy on the brink of starvation became the ruthless warrior Genghis Khan, whose story still captivates us almost 1,000 years later.

A Lady’s Guide

It’s been 21 years since Journey to the River Sea was published, but it still captivates readers (old and young alike) across the globe. The main character, Maia, is an orphan who is sent to live with distant relatives in Brazil in the early twentieth century. The relatives are interested in little but Maia’s money. However, Maia finds loyal companions in her governess, a young actor and a local boy. The Key in the Lock Beth Underdown Secrets, lies and deception abound in this gothic thriller. Ivy Boscawen is mourning the death of her son in the Great War. She’s also still haunted by memories of a child’s death 30 years before. Ivy believes the boy was murdered and now she needs to find out what really happened. But will anyone be prepared to let the full truth come to light, even Ivy herself?

Who needs a time machine when you have historical fiction?

“JJN recently completed an extension to our cottage which we are delighted with. Their site team, led by Jeff, came up with a raft of ideas to improve the project; equally, all the changes and extras we came up with as we went along were incorporated without fuss or bother. The team were, without fail, helpful, polite, and hard working. They were also good fun to have working around the house – I think our dog is still missing the fuss each day – and kept

JJN’s office manager Sally Crossley explains: “We’ve found recently that since the pandemic, when people spent more time at home, many are choosing to improve the space they live in with renovations or extensions. We’ve been busy helping many happy customers to create a home they can be proud of and feel comfortable in. Whatever your vision, we’ll do our best to accommodate!”

The team comprises 8 employees, with a 9th soon to join as an apprentice, as well as many regular, reliable sub-contractors who are like extended family. Co-founder and director Jeff Kemp is still the main point of contact, managing jobs big or small. He ensures that all work is completed to the high standard that JJN have become known for over the years. But, this friendly, family-led business puts its success down to attention to detail and caring about the little things –they’re always polite, respectful, organised, clean and tidy. Coupled with their exceptional professional skills and high quality finish, these things make a big difference, as one happy customer confirms:

During this magical month, don’t miss the petrichor! It’s a real treat, and is the scent of rain that arises from damp earth after it falls on dry soil. This is a time to savour the daylight, knowing it will be seeping gradually away. But rather than mourn the loss of longer days, there’s work to be done outdoors as you need to get your garden in order to make it

As we dip into the mellow days of autumn, it’s a good time to reach for the camera. The light levels are often perfect for photography in the garden. Capture those glistening spiders’ webs and moisture droplets that decorate leaves. Soak up every moment of the golden times when long shadows make great shots. There is generally less pollution in autumn due to cooler weather, and skies tend to be clearer.

By Caroline Knight

October can catch you out. There are days that feel like an Indian summer, with bright blue skies and sun that warms, but also unexpected frosts. Protect vulnerable plants by moving them to sheltered sites, or cover them in horticultural fleece.

• It’s time to plant some underground flower power while there is still warmth in the soil. This is the best bulb-planting month for spring-flowering beauties such as daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, alliums and hyacinths. Tulips can wait until November, or even later if the weather is mild. This helps to avoid the dreaded tulip fire virus.

• Lawn lovers will be in their element during October, as this is a good time to rake out the thatch and apply autumn lawn fertiliser. Trim the lawn edges to give it a crisp shape that should last until spring.

•winter-ready.Beforeleaves are filling up every crevice and corner, remember to cover ponds using fine mesh. It will Gardening Garden Tasks and Treats for October stop the debris from falling to the bottom of the water where it will rot.

• This is a perfect pruning time for certain climbers and shrubs. Beware of cutting into old wood on lavender and rosemary, however. You can prune shrub roses and soft fruit bushes. Cut hedges without too much fear of disturbing bird nests and consider giving your hedge a mulch around the base. Always check before adding fresh wood chippings, however. Some newly shredded wood can change the pH value of the soil and others might deplete nitrogen levels in the ground underneath.

• Collect seeds for propagation. Many of them can be sown right away, but some can be scattered later. Check the preferences of each type of seed, as some require ‘cold stratification’, where they need to undergo a cold period before they are likely to germinate. They include many acer trees, most shrubs such as cornus (dogwood) and forsythia, clematis and perennials including lavender, nepeta, sedum and rudbeckia.

• Stop and think before you cut things back during autumn pruning. Many plants have high feed value for garden birds. The seeds provide food and the leaves and stems offer shelter for birds, small mammals and mini-beasts. Leave them in situ if you can.

The Diary of a Local Mum Picking up the Pieces

Sometimes, with the benefit of life experience, you can see that the problem isn’t actually all that huge – having been on this planet for many more years then they have, you know that, in the grand scheme of things, this ‘catastrophic event’ is a mere bump in the road that will be forgotten in a few hours/tomorrow/next week (or, in the case of a toddler who’s inconsolable because their favourite spoon is in the dishwasher, just a few minutes!). But telling a child of any age that whatever’s rocked their world is ‘unimportant’ is categorically NOT the right thing to say! In their mind it’s allconsuming, so we have to respect the way it’s making them feel, with no judgement. Whatever life throws at them, knowing that you’re a solid, reliable rock within their sea of uncertainty will help. As parents we can’t always prevent things from being broken, but we can be there to help pick up the pieces.

Usually this realisation hits pretty hard within the first few days of becoming a parent as you’re wading zombie-like through sleepless nights and endless days, or dealing with your first poonami (seriously, how can all that mess come from something so small and cute?!?). Then, there are the glory days of cleaning up sick or endless nit-combing … this parenting lark is certainly not all But,glamour!nothing is as bad as when things go wrong for your kids. Whether it’s losing their favourite toy or blanket, grazing their knee in the playground, falling out with friends, having their heart broken, not making the team or missing out on that grade, there are so many times in life when things just don’t quite go our way, and seeing it happen to your kids is like torture. If you could swap places and absorb the pain yourself, you would.

By Helen Young

As a parent, your first instinct is to try and ‘fix’ the problem but often it’s sadly not quite that easy. Tempting as it is, it’s not always possible or, even if it is, it’s not always the right approach.

There are undeniably lots of highs of parenthood. Those happy moments, memories to treasure, times when your heart swells to bursting with pride… but, as we all know, with the highs come plenty of lows. There are points in the parenting journey where you pause and think ‘Really?!? Is this my life?’

However, giving kids of any age a helping hand when times are tough is challenging in itself. How far do we go to intervene? Knowing we can’t take their pain away entirely is hard, so to what extent should we try to alleviate it? Is being there as a shoulder to cry on enough? And what do we do when they push us away? Sometimes they want their own space to deal with things … but give them too much time and space and they’ll feel like they’re alone. Conversely, intervening too much can make them feel stifled. It’s a minefield! We know, rationally, that they need to grow and learn – we’ve all had to do it –but standing on the sidelines as your child copes with difficult situations is so, so hard.

Part of our role as parents is to help them learn what to do in the rain and, at the risk of taking this metaphor too far, we can’t always be there with an umbrella!

Life can be cruel and sometimes your role is just to be there to help them weather the storm, learning how to navigate their own way through the inevitable ups and downs. Most of us would love for our kids to experience a life full of endless sunshine but it’s just not practical.

The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Julia Buxton from Kilburn. She was nominated by her neighbour Amy Fones. Here’s what Amy wrote: “I would like to nominate my neighbour Julia Buxton to receive the Friendship Blooms bouquet because a few weeks ago, one Friday morning, my shop delivery driver was having a hard time bringing my food shopping to my house so I had to come out with my baby to get the multiple bags. Julia was getting ready to start her shift when she saw me through her window and didn’t hesitate to come out to help me carry my bags, which is why I feel she deserves this nomination as she showed good civil character by going out of her way to help me, I hope that All Things Local can help me make her day so that she feels appreciated by her community. Thank you.” Amy NominateFones.someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. three-storey building, now a hairdresser and beauty salon. For many years it was a druggists (the old name for a pharmacy) owned by Samuel Kiddy. Elizabeth Grummit moved there when she married Samuel in 1855. Elizabeth was born in 1828 into a farming family at Elsthorpe Grange, Lincolnshire. At the age of 27 she accepted a marriage proposal from the fifty-year-old Samuel Kiddy. Samuel had his finger in many pies. He held a position on Belper Waterworks, was a Guardian at Belper Workhouse, a churchwarden at St Peter’s and served on the Carnival Committee. He was a Freemason, a dealer of nails and lead and rented land near the station from the Strutt Estate where he was complemented on the excellence of his turnips. In the recession of 1855, together with other businessmen, he set up a soup kitchen for the poor which he promised would continue every week “so long as trade continues in so depressed a state”. Elizabeth would have enjoyed being the wife of an influential Belper businessman. In an age when women’s prospects were limited she had found a new way of life away from the farm and had a comfortable life above the shop with a servant. Years before his marriage Samuel had taken in his young nephew, John Ashton, to train as an apprentice. Later John took over management of Samuel’s second shop in Ripley and married Ellen Hall. They had six children but five died in infancy and one child, Arthur William, survived. Unfortunately in 1878 John’s wife Ellen died, leaving him to bring up the five-year-old boy. Elizabeth and Samuel had 24 years of marriage, but no children. Samuel died in 1879 at the age of 74 and was buried with all honours in St Peter’s Churchyard. After Samuel’s death John took over the Belper shop, something he and his uncle may have been working towards since John’s childhood. The widow Elizabeth moved to Rotherhithe, London where she had friends or family. Then things moved quickly. Within a year of Samuel’s death John proposed to her and they were married in Rotherhithe in 1880. He was five years her junior and they had known each other for about 25 years.

Belper eyebrows would have been raised at the speed of their marriage after their spouses’ deaths, but it was very convenient for both parties. It must have been gratifying to Elizabeth to come back to her old home on the Market Place. They re-named the business Kiddy & Ashton, but sadly the couple had little time together as John died in 1882. She arranged for his burial in Belper Cemetery next to his first wife with a memorial inscription to Ellen and their five lost children: “They are flourished as a farmer, married Emily Adshead of Fenny Bentley Hall, then later became a druggist like his father. A daughter was born in 1905 but Arthur was killed in the First World War. Elizabeth Ashton disappears from the records and in spite of help from a researcher more skilled than I am, her subsequent life remains a mystery.

They will urgently ask for money transferring to pay for a replacement or general bills. These scams can be quite convincing, and there have been cases nationally where the victim transferred multiple amounts of money before realising the recipient wasn’t who they thought.

Technology, for most, makes our daily lives easier.

I only had to sit in a vintage car during a visit to Drive Dad’s Car in Ambergate recently to send my mind back to the day trips we took in my dad’s Ford Consul, where the feel of the upholstery, the primitive controls and the exterior styling all combine to create the same sense of nostalgia you can sense when a Morris Minor Traveller turns up at a crematorium or provoke the sigh of pleasure when a Land Rover Defender arrives at the funeral for a farmer.

The drive to make funerals more personal is in full flow in the industry and since few things are as personal as our choice of vehicle, expect to see many more unusual hearses pulling up at a crematorium near you.

Our latest brochure is the first ever to feature a whole page of alternative hearses and I’m sure we will be adding many more in the future, because this is a growing Theremarket.is no doubt that the vehicles we choose to drive come to characterise us, whether we’re a Mini Cooper person or a BMW-type. Then there are those our parents used to drive, which bring back memories of journeys or family holidays.

This month saw a new visitor arriving at our funeral home, in the form of a Subaru Impreza sports car which had been recently converted into a hearse. Sadly, as you would imagine, the occasion was a solemn one, being that of a young man who died in an accident and whose family wanted him to take his final journey in a fitting manner. In this case, the car was a perfect match: it was just the kind of car he would have loved to have driven himself and it summed up his personality, interests, youth and love of driving. It also adds to the collection of alternative hearses that we have hired on behalf of our families or are available for Overhire.the previous weeks we were visited by a converted Morris Minor Traveller and a vintage lorry, while in the past we have arranged funerals involving a motorbike and sidecar, a Land Rover and a VW camper.
