Welcome to the June/July issue of All Things Local! Hopefully, by the time you read this, the weather will have perked up a little … it’s been a pretty soggy spring so far!

All the rain should be doing the gardens good though and, when the sun does make an appearance, we’ll be able to enjoy some ‘blooming lovely’ displays of colour. If doing your garden is too much of a challenge or if you just want some advice on what to plant where, there are plenty of local experts willing to help in our ‘Homes and Gardens’ section – and, of course, the same goes for all our other businesses too! We’ve got a wealth of talented, knowledgeable and experienced people within these pages; you don’t have to travel far to find an expert, there are plenty right here on our doorstep!

At this time of year, many of us are thinking about holidaying. Where will your adventures take you in 2023? Our travel article, on page 15, looks at some stunning places to visit in Turkey. If you haven’t been, it’s a wonderful country and is well worth a trip.

Team ATL are big camping and caravanning fans and between us we’ll be taking trips to various locations around the UK, enjoying a bit of R&R and some time in nature. Sometimes, we don’t even venture out of the Peak District – you don’t have to travel far to feel like you’re on holiday! If you’re out Bakewell way, there’s a fantastic walk featured on page 31 which takes in the beautiful Ashford in the Water and Monsal Head Viaduct. At 8.8 miles / 14.2km it’s quite a lengthy trek, with a steep climb at the end, but it’s a beautiful route that’s worth the challenge if you’re up for it!

Do You Need to Take Action?

Being a Trustee has always carried with it weighty responsibilities. Added to those responsibilities now is the new requirement to register with HMRC’s Trust Registration Service.

Making a Will is a serious business. It is a time which gives many people cause to stop and think about how they want to be remembered when they are gone.

Trusts are a very well established part of English law, but are generally not available in many European countries. So what are they, and how did they come about?

When a marriage or a civil partnership breaks down, consideration needs to be given to how the assets of the union are to be divided. Assets can include the home, savings, cars and other valuables but also pensions.

The difficulty is that the CETV for one scheme might produce completely different pension benefits to the CETV in another scheme. You might share a particular pension equally but the reality in terms of what you might each receive in your pocket could be significantly different. The court is generally concerned about the effect of a pension sharing order, especially when people might have been together for a long time.

to hold property of the estate of a deceased person. Whether (and when) the Trust needs to be registered with the TRS depends on the type of Trust it is.

3. Disabled Person(s) Trust: This is a Trust set up for the benefit of a disabled person or persons. At the moment, generally speaking these trusts do not have to be registered on the TRS, but may have to be registered for taxable purposes if they have a UK tax liability

Another of the trusts we look after was set up by a client who wanted to help people with particular medical conditions. Her kindness has enabled her trustees to provide financial support to a gifted young musician who has experienced a number of health issues that have interfered with her education, to enable that child to be educated in the most appropriate environment.

In the fight against crime the UK has adopted the 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive of the European Union. In order to improve the transparency of Trusts, and to counter against money-laundering and terrorist financing, many Trusts not previously requiring registration must now register with HMRC’s Trust Registration Service (which we will refer to as the ‘TRS’ in this article).

Indeed the pensions can be the most valuable asset and care has to be exercised in how they are treated and how they are divided. Usually, pensions are dealt with in one of the following ways:

Many people are attracted by the idea of doing something to help others less fortunate than themselves after they pass away, particularly if their family are adequately provided for or if they have no close family. Whilst some still like the idea of supporting major national charities, there are many who prefer to benefit more local causes or causes close to their heart, possibly where they have had a personal involvement or received support during their lifetime.

Put as simply as possible, a Trust will arise where a person transfers property or assets into the name of their chosen Trustees, for the Trustees to hold that property or those assets for certain purposes and on certain terms, for the benefit of specific persons or a group of people.

1. Pension sharing. This is where one pension is divided to create essentially two pensions, a reduced pension for the member of the pension scheme and a new pension for the other person.

A Charitable Trust can be set up either during your lifetime with savings and investments built up already, or alternatively through a specially prepared Will that will only take effect following your death and will therefore not deprive you of capital or income during your lifetime.

Once registered, the Trustee’s responsibilities do not end: if there are amendments to the Trust, such as change of Trustees or a change of asset, these need to be updated within 90 days on the TRS. HMRC may impose penalties, currently up to £5,000, against Trustees who are required to register their Trust but fail to do so, or once they have registered, who fail to keep the details on the register up to date.

To better understand Trusts we can take a look back to the times of the Crusades. Trusts first began to take shape in medieval England when men were travelling abroad to join the Crusades. They would transfer their property to a trusted friend for them to look after, manage and protect until their return, which may not be for many years. The moral obligation imposed on the friend is one of the earliest forms of a Trust, which over the centuries has become embedded in our legal system.

The CETV provided by a pension scheme might not be a true representation of the value of that pension. In some cases, especially some public sector pensions, the CETV provided can significantly understate the true worth of a pension. There are obviously many different pension schemes in existence. Each will probably be different to the next. It is very important that you receive the right advice and that the true value of each pension is understood and shared fairly. Often it is necessary to involve other experts, for example pension actuaries, who will produce comprehensive reports to assist in the division of pension assets. The information given above is necessarily general and cannot be relied upon in any particular case.

Trust law and the taxation rules can be complex and are constantly changing. If you are a Trustee or Executor, it is important that you take advice about your particular responsibilities and keep yourself up to date.

The registration deadline was the 1st September 2022. Trusts set up on or after 4 June 2022 must be registered within 90 days. There are a number of exceptions which apply, which means there are some Trusts which do not have to be registered, but types of trust can be complex and it is the responsibility of the Trustees to determine whether or not their Trust needs to be registered. Importantly, even if a Trust is not taxable, it may still be required to be registered with the TRS. It will also be necessary for Executors to register some estates with the TRS.

Whilst the idea that someone travelling abroad may leave their property in Trust to be managed whilst they are away is still very useful today, Trusts may be used closer to home to protect and manage property or money in other circumstances too. For example, a parent may set up a Trust in their lifetime or through their Will for a child, or for an adult son or daughter who is not able to manage their own affairs perhaps because of disability or mental capacity issues. A married person may provide in their Will for their surviving spouse to have a life interest in their half of the family home thereby protecting that half of the home for the next generation. A Trust may be used where someone receives damages as a result of a personal injury or clinical negligence claim. A couple may set up a Trust to keep their family assets in the bloodline in case of changes in family and marital arrangements which may take the assets out of the family, or someone with a second family may set up a Trust to make special arrangements for their two families. A person with Charitable intentions may set up a Trust in their lifetime or on death for the benefit of those who they particularly wish to help in the future, and by doing so leave a lasting legacy: many of the charities we see now may have been set up in this way. These are all types of Trust.

2. Pension attachment. This is where a court makes an order directing that some of the pension payable to one person is paid to the other.

3. Offsetting. This is where the pensions are left untouched but the share of other assets are adjusted to take into account the value of pensions.

Something that our team will discuss with clients in this situation is the idea of setting up their own charitable trust which can continue to provide support for charitable causes of their choosing long after they have passed away. Creating your own charity means that your trustees can provide support to those who need help most. There can be a great sense of satisfaction in knowing that your trustees will carry out your wishes after you have gone and that your name will be associated with such good deeds even after you are no longer around.

Before you even think about dealing with pensions you need to know their value. The starting point is often the provision of a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (“CETV”). This needs to be provided in all cases. Whilst the CETV is important, further information is often needed in terms of benefit statements so that the full terms of the pension can be considered.

The following list is by no means exhaustive but represents some of the types of Trusts that need to be registered with the TRS:

The relevance? Millions of qualified UK workers have been enrolled into workplace pensions under auto-enrolment rules since 2012. It is considered a successful piece of employment legislation as it made it mandatory to be enrolled into a suitable workplace pension unless the worker subsequently chose to not be a member.

Now as a team of 8 we have seen the client base expand over the years. ‘Generous’ successive Chancellors introduce new legislation impacting the public and signposting the need for financial advice.

Many workplace pensions do provide members with information about the scheme, but few provide financial advice. Advice is a bespoke recommendation given based upon all of the facts but also the thoughts and feelings of those in receipt. Guidance is commonly known as the act of guiding, leading or providing direction. In the UK, guidance might be: it is usually good for you to join the pension scheme (there are a few exceptions). Once a member, the choice of where you invest your money is left for the member to decide or adopt the default investment solution within the pension if the member is unsure where to invest. The ‘default solution’ is generally likely to be suitable for the many, but not for everyone. All workplace pension schemes have a default investment solution and the masses would normally automatically have their pension contributions directed to this, unless they made a decision of their own (often with no advice) to direct their premiums to a place of their choice within the scheme.

intended to buy a lifetime annuity with the fund. In this case, as the member reaches 65, there is an assumption that at 65 they disinvest all the money on one day (let’s hope it’s a good day!) and buy a lifetime annuity. In that case, the intention above is to protect the fund from a sudden market crash in the run up to age 65. Note that the scheme has not questioned the member about their attitude to investment risk and everyone accepts the default.

But what if they either don’t want to retire at 65 (sooner or later) or preferred flexi-drawdown instead with some or all of their pension fund rather than a one-off annuity? In the first example (the automated lifestyle default), the funds will be removed from investment risk but also potentially real investment returns at the very time the fund peaks with contributions. In drawdown, funds are likely to remain invested for many years post-65 and therefore would ideally need to be exposed to other funds (other than 100% cash) to generate a real return, assuming the member understands the risks.

In April 2015, pension regulations changed. They will almost certainly change again. Pensions from prior to this time may no longer be suitable – but just how would you know? So, as you sit munching your turkey over the festive period, consider how many of these questions apply to you and see what may benefit from having a review.

In reality, whilst serving honourable intentions for its members, the default may be unsuitable for the individual scheme member. Therefore, there is a need for suitable financial advice whereby the retirement options are discussed, risk appetite considered and retirement investment strategy planned. A workplace pension is often a great scheme to be a part of. However, perhaps more thought could be given to how the money is invested to meet the member’s own needs.

Just a Thought...

Virtually Virtuous

I remember an embroidery on the wall of our village hall when I was growing up. In dutiful delphinium blue cross stitch it read, ‘Patience is a Virtue’. As an energetic 8-year-old I thought that sounded drier than a packet of cream crackers but, as I approach 40, I think I am beginning to see the wisdom.

Once upon a time we were glad just to have the internet; now if it dares to buffer we hit meltdown! We are not content to watch what is on TV at the time we sit down, we want instant access to the show we want, when we want it. If a new series deigns to only release one episode a week we are stomping off to bed with gritted teeth – we need all 14 episodes to watch back-to-back! We have zero patience.

Your social media post has been live for 3 minutes and still no comments – soul crushing! That message was read 54 seconds ago and not even an emoji response, painful! It is an ill-gained effect of modern life, and it comes at a

cost to our health. Humans were not designed to live life at this breakneck speed. Instantaneous breeds unrest, instability, anxiety, depression and is a definite hormone hoover. It is hard to feel that rush of dopamine when you haven’t had to wait for something, work at it or hope for it.

So, what do we do? Well, we make like Take That and we try a little patience. We tap into our inner Guinness-mode and remember that good things do come to those who wait. I have definitely benefitted from engaging in breathwork, slowing down and trying to relinquish control of so much in the moment. Don’t let the virtual world dictate the pace. Stop. Wait. Breathe. See, you are virtually virtuous.

Did you know that engineering work to connect more than 8000 homes and businesses to full fibre broadband

is set to begin in May.

Once completed, Belper, Kilburn and many other surrounding villages will join more than 650 other rural communities across 23 counties that are connected to Gigaclear’s full fibre broadband network – that’s more than 380,000 properties stretching from Devon in the west to Essex in the east and up into Derbyshire. Gigaclear has been working closely with local parish councils, community groups, the county council and the highways authority to minimise any disruption during the work and hopes to have the vast majority of it completed by November.

challenging layout of the communities we are extending to, their picturesque settings, as well as their historical landmarks, when deciding how best to extend its network.

He said: “There will inevitably be some short-term inconvenience caused during the engineering work. However, by listening to residents and keeping them informed and updated on how we are progressing, I believe we’ll be able to deliver the long-term benefits of full fibre broadband with as little impact as possible.”

The good news is Gigaclear has identified that around 60 per cent of the cable laying can be carried out using existing infrastructure, such as poles and underground ducts owned by Openreach. This will help reduce any disruption and will mean the work can be carried out more quickly.

Can you feel the excitement in the air? I know I can! July is time to celebrate National Baked Bean Month.

Baked beans have been such a staple of the Great British diet for over a century that they practically run through our veins.

As much as we may love to joke about the “musical fruit” aspect, there’s no denying these little legumes are both versatile and delicious.

One reason for their popularity is their unique, sweet and savoury flavour. They are slow-cooked to perfection, resulting in a rich, hearty texture that’s perfect for topping toast, jacket potatoes or adding to your full-English.

• Birmingham, UK was once crowned the capital of baked beans as it was found that most Brummies ate beans at least once a week.

• The iconic “Beanz Meanz Heinz” slogan was penned in a London pub back in 1967 and has certainly stood the test of time.

Few owners are grateful for the gift of a dead mouse or bird posted through the cat flap. But it’s natural instinct for cats to hunt, and presenting their catch to you means you are part of their family and they want to boast of their success. There’s no point getting angry as they won’t understand it.

Cats are instinctively attracted to small, enclosed spaces because they provide a sense of safety and security. They can feel protected and observe their surroundings without feeling threatened. The box is also warm, smooth and slightly padded. As far as a cat is concerned, what’s not to like?

As a natural hunter, climbing to high places allows a cat to survey their environment and assess potential threats. It is also a natural form of exercise for cats. It helps them maintain their balance, coordination and agility, which are important for hunting and self-defence.

No water, thanks

Cats are descendants of desert-dwelling wild cats, and their ancestors did not need to swim or interact with water regularly. As a result, cats did not develop an affinity for water like some other animals, such as dogs. Furthermore, water can make their fur mat, hence making it difficult to groom, which, as a fastidious animal, can be uncomfortable.

By far one of Turkey’s most iconic man-made structures is Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, built in the Ottoman era in the early 1600s. Hierapolis-Pamukkale, Büyük Menderes Valley

Nestled within a steep valley in south-western Turkey, Pamukkale’s white travertine terraces are a geological phenomenon. The spectacle is created by mineral springs that have cascaded down the hillside for thousands of years. The natural pools are terraced into the hillside, overspilling with the mineral-rich spring water, which dries over time, leaving behind that perfect white, frozen appearance.

It can get busy during peak season, so for some peace and quiet, head to the ancient ruins and hot springs of the nearby spa town Hierapolis.

Cappadocia, Central Anatolia

Set high on the Anatolian plateau, the curious landscapes of Cappadocia will transport you to fantasy land. Honeycoloured rocks have eroded into otherworldly sculptures resembling minarets, mushrooms and ‘fairy chimneys’, while entire subterranean cities, churches and monasteries lie hidden beneath the surface, carved out by settlers since the Bronze Age.

Take a hot-air balloon ride at sunset, or admire the landscape from the terrace of a rooftop hotel. This is truly one of the most romantic spots in the world!

Blue Lagoon, Olüdeniz

Turkey is known for its sun, sea and sand, with a staggering 8,333 kilometres of coastline. However, when it comes to crystal-clear waters and white sand, Olüdeniz’s Blue Lagoon and nearby beaches are hard to beat.

This bay of azure water with its strip of white sand is the perfect place to kick back and relax, but if that’s not your cup of tea there are lots of activities to keep you entertained. Why not take a paragliding trip or try your hand at paddle boarding in the lagoon?

Ephesus, Izmir

Once housing The Temple of Artemis, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, the remains of Ephesus recount a fascinating narrative of the 9,000-year-old settlement. After more than a century of excavation, we know that it was once a vibrant city of over 250,000 inhabitants, complete with colonnaded streets, temples, a huge amphitheatre and the Celsus library, which still stands today.

Short Story The Dig

“Hey you Nathan!” Derek looked up from his hole and hailed his neighbour’s young boy.

Nathan had been riding his bike around the cul-de-sac, watching Derek dig his hole in the farmer’s paddock with mild interest. Digging was thirsty work. The spoil heap was piling up around Derek, and his metal detector was still buzzing like a mosquito.

Nathan squeezed his brakes to a halt. “What you doing down there? Digging to Australia?”

Derek was now four feet down and still hadn’t got to the bottom of whatever was making the metal detector beep. Something big, possibly; something valuable, potentially.

“I’m doing important archaeology,” Derek replied. “Would you be so kind as to go and knock on the door of my house? My wife Debbie will be at home. Ask her if you can have a can of pop for Derek. She’ll know what you mean.”

“But will I know what I mean?” Nathan scratched his head. Derek sighed. “Just ask Debbie to bring me a drink. I’m rather parched.”

“Are you allowed to dig that hole?” The boy didn’t move. “Yes, I’ve asked permission.”

Nathan rang his bell gaily for no apparent reason. “I like digging,” he said finally.

“Good for you. If you fetch me a drink, I’ll let you have a go with my spade.”

The boy narrowed his eyes. “Am I allowed to play with your buzzy machine?”

“Certainly not. This is a sensitive piece of professional equipment. It’s not a toy.”

The very idea, Derek thought.

Debbie had grumbled for a week about how much he’d spent on his metal detector. He reasoned there was no point having one unless it was top of the range. Besides, it would pay for itself in no time; where there’s muck there’s brass, as his father always said.

Nathan looked at the metal detector with renewed admiration. “How about I just hold it?”

“No, you can’t just hold it.”

“But didn’t you say you were thirsty?” The child was a fierce negotiator.

“Alright,” Derek relented, “but only for one minute.”

Nathan rested his bike on the pile of soil and scrambled down into the hole, kicking dirt everywhere.

“You switch it on here,” Derek demonstrated, mustering all his patience. “Then you point it at the ground and listen for the beep.”

The boy put his hands around the handle while Derek watched anxiously. He aimed it at the ground and the detector chirped urgently.

“What’s it doing now?” Nathan asked in awe.

“It’s telling us there’s something made of metal down below.” “What sort of something?”

“Could be anything. A bronze helmet, a Viking hoard, a sword. Or it could even be something very small like a nail.” “Could it be a bike?” Nathan swung the detector up in the air, nearly taking Derek’s cap off. “Or even my toenails?” He swung it back at his feet.

“Not toenails, no.” Derek was unable to wrestle the equipment from the child’s fierce grip. “It wouldn’t work on them.”

“You just said nails could make it beep.” Nathan frowned. Derek wondered what on earth they were teaching kids at school these days. “Nails you hammer, but not toenails. They’re made of something else.”

“Like what?” the boy asked earnestly.

“I’m not sure precisely,” Derek confessed.

“What about yours?” He aimed it at Derek’s toes and the detector squealed louder than ever. “Your nails are made out of metal, listen.” He did it again.

“That’s not my nails.” Derek slumped, realising he’d wasted a whole morning and now had a very big hole to fill in.

“That’s my steel toe caps.”

Recipe

Pasta, Pronto!

Fuss-free and made in moments, Spaghetti alla Caprese (spaghetti from Capri) is a blissfully simple idea, yet looks stunningly sophisticated for a light lunch or quick midweek supper dish.

Serves: 4-6

Takes: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

• 250g cherry tomatoes on the vine, ripe and flavourful, cut into quarters

• 1 clove garlic, peeled and sliced

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 500g spaghetti

• 125g buffalo mozzarella, torn into bite-sized pieces

• A generous handful of fresh basil, torn

• 2 tsp chopped fresh oregano

• Freshly grated Parmesan, to serve

Method:

Place the tomatoes in a large bowl with the garlic, oil, salt and pepper, and leave to marinate for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pan of boiling, salted water until al dente. This will very much depend on personal preference, so taste as you are cooking and stop when the pasta is cooked to your liking. Drain, reserving a cup of cooking water.

Add the mozzarella to the marinating tomatoes. Add the spaghetti to the bowl of tomatoes and mix through, adding a little of the pasta cooking water if needed. Sprinkle with basil and oregano. Serve straight away, sprinkled with Parmesan.

Leith, Edinburgh, hasn’t always been the desirable place it is now, with the memory of high unemployment and rundown buildings fading fast following nearly three decades of regeneration.

Summer is in full swing and our thoughts turn towards cool white wines drunk on the patio in the sun.

During a recent trip to a new wine merchant that I have found in Castle Donington, he asked me to taste one of his wines … well, who am I to turn down a free glass of wine?! In the blind tasting, I recognised the flavours of the wine and correctly identified it as a Torrontés from Argentina.

It is thought that Torrontés came to Argentina from Galicia in Spain and became the area’s most widely grown white wine grape. It likes the high altitudes and mountain breezes. There are 3 types found in Argentina: the Riojano, Sanjuanino and Mendocino varieties. All are derived from the Muscat grape, with one being from a California strain. Coming from a Muscat grape it carries the floral flavours and aromas. It likes this area so much that it is also grown on the other side of the Andes in Chile.

The wine I found is Manos Negras Torrontés from Salta in Argentina. It is produced by Bodega Catena Zapata, by one of Argentina’s most knowledgeable viticulturists, Alejandro Sejanovich, who has worked at the Bodega for over 16 years. The vineyard focuses on latitude winemaking in the northern stretches of Cadayate in Salta. With warm sunny days and cool

Motoring The History of the Audi TT

There are some cars that offer an incredibly recognisable shape and silhouette, and one of those is the Audi TT.

Across its three generations, all versions have shared similar styling, and have built up a loyal following since the TT was first introduced in 1998. It’s become one of the most iconic pieces of car design in modern history.

But the TT will soon be no more, as Audi looks to focus more on electrification, which this petrolpowered sports car just can’t be a part of. Ahead of the model being discontinued later in 2023, we take a look back at the TT’s history.

1995 – The concept begins

Audi presented a concept version of its sports car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. The TT, with its cool shape and fun drive, was intended as a more affordable sporting model in the German firm’s line-up.

The name comes from the famous Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) bike racing.

1998 – Concept becomes reality

Three years later, the production TT kept the cool shape and design details of the original concept car. The Coupe model arrived in 1998 and the drop-top Roadster version a year later.

The model had stability issues at particularly high speeds, needing a full Audi recall to remedy this with a rear spoiler and electronic stability program. Cars escaping the recall are now the most valuable.

2003 – V6 engine joins the range

Previously available with a choice of 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engines, plus Audi’s quattro all-wheeldrive system, in 2003 the TT was offered with a 3.2litre petrol V6 engine, taking the power up to 247bhp. Quattro was included as standard.

2005 – Quattro Sport marks the end of the Mk1

The Quattro Sport edition was limited to 800 units in the UK. Engine power increased to 237bhp and weight-saving measures were introduced.

Differentiated by its Alcantara interior and black roof, special Recaro Pole Position sports seats were optionally available.

2006 – The second hit: stick to what you know

The second-generation Audi TT adopted a slightly more angular design, and was sportier to drive and slightly bigger.

A new 2.0-litre petrol engine was introduced, while an adaptive ‘Magnetic’ suspension was an option. The TT Roadster arrived in 2007, along with a diesel-powered model returning more than 50mpg.

2008 – Sportier TTS and RS models introduced

The much sportier TTS and TT RS models included a 268bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine in the TTS, and a 335bhp 2.5-litre RS version, giving 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 174mph.

2014 – A high-tech TT makeover

The third-generation TT was one of Audi’s most advanced models at the time.

A minimalist dashboard with a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster modernised the TT. 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines were available, with the TTS uprated to 306bhp.

The TT RS arrived in 2016 with a 395bhp 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine. 0-60mph took just 3.5 seconds, making it the quickest TT ever made.

2018 – Marking twenty years in style

A facelift version brought a subtle redesign, more power and additional equipment.

The TT 20 Years special edition was limited to just 999 units worldwide.

2023 – End of the road

The 2023 Final Edition bolsters equipment levels and adds unique elements, including an Alcantara steering wheel.

The highly limited TT RS Iconic Edition, of which just eleven examples will come to the UK, features an Audi Exclusive interior and sportier body kit.

Boxing is a combat sport that has been practised for years but it has recently become more popular as a form of exercise: ‘boxing for fitness’.

This is very different from fighting in a boxing match against an opponent. In boxing for fitness classes you can partner someone holding pads or punch against a punch bag. Boxing is a movement intense activity, involving footwork and pad combinations, helping to work on balance and coordination which can often be affected as we age. Boxing classes improve hand-eye coordination, as punching combinations can build muscle memory.

There is no better way to release stress than to punch pads or

a punching bag. Research has observed massive mood improvements amongst people who practice this type of training.

4. Improve Cardiovascular Health

Taking care of your heart by doing regular cardiovascular exercise is essential to keep it healthy and protect from heart disease and common illnesses. Boxing gets your heart pumping and lungs working harder, which results in beneficial changes within the body.

5. Mental Benefits

Working out releases endorphins, the happy hormone, which lifts your mood and fights off lack of energy. Endorphins are so powerful that regular exercise can actually be used to treat mild depression and seasonal disorders. Boxing is great for clearing your head; the repetitive motion of punching can help you switch off and focus, centring the mind and letting stresses fade away.

6. Socialising

When you attend a class you’re surrounded by like-minded people. You can have a laugh and, even if you didn’t feel motivated when you walked in the door, your mood will be lifted once you’ve started the first round.

For the most part this Peak District walk follows well used paths and trails. Do remember that there is a lengthy ascent towards the end of the route through Great Shacklow Wood. The start is the pay and display car park at Lees Bottom (grid ref. SK170706) where there are also public toilets. Refreshments can be obtained at Monsal Head and in the village of Ashfordin-the-Water.

The Route

1. Exit the car park onto the A6 main road. Cross over to the signed path, descend the awkward stile and follow into the woodland. Where the path splits, keep right and continue down to the River Wye.

2. Follow this pleasant path upstream through Monsal Dale. Just before the old railway viaduct turn left and climb up to the old railway track. Turn right and cross the viaduct. Then take the path on the left that climbs up to Monsal Head with its wonderful views across the dale and railway viaduct.

3. From the road junction at Monsal Head take the lane towards Little Longstone. Take the first footpath on your right opposite the chapel (grid ref. SK187716). Continue along this path to turn left onto the Monsal Trail. There follows a section of easy walking going past Thornbridge Hall on your right to cross the A6020.

4. About three metres further on, descend to the walled lane and walk south (grid ref. SK213707). Continue on this bridleway across Cracknowl to reach the River Wye.

5. Cross the river and walk up to the A6. Turn right along the A6 passing Lumford Mill on your right. At grid ref. SK209690 take the footpath on your right. This path loops along beside the River Wye before returning to the A6.

6. Turn right along the A6, cross the old bridge over the River Wye and walk into the centre of Ashford-in-the-Water. Turn left down Greaves Lane, left again into Church Street, continuing to cross the bridge on your right over the River Wye to the A6. Turn right along the A6, taking the lane on your left (signed to Sheldon).

7. Where the road bends to the left, go straight ahead onto the signed footpath at grid ref. SK189694. This path leads alongside the River Wye. Ignore paths off to your left and continue straight ahead.

8. You will enter Great Shacklow Wood. Initially the path stays by the river but eventually climbs steadily through the wood. Reaching a steep open field at the end of the wood, turn right and descend back to the start.

Gardening Changing Garden Trends

The average garden has changed significantly over the last 50 years. In a physical sense, it has become smaller but, in more general terms, expectations have grown. In a small garden every square metre matters. Today’s contemporary garden might have an outside kitchen and possibly a retractable roof to serve as a sunshade or umbrella, while a moving water feature provides a soundscape to accompany the outdoor dining experience.

Alongside the shrinking space, our need for privacy has expanded. The addition of pleached trees – often called a ‘hedge on stilts’ – has become commonplace. They allow taller boundaries that blur the fence line, thus bringing seclusion without harsh enclosure.

Look at the plants

Gardens follow fashion and plant selection tells you a huge amount about the history and evolution of a garden. Before the 1980s, a garden border would be filled with perennial planting that might include asters, campanula, delphiniums, hardy geraniums, helianthus, geums, lupins, peonies, pulmonaria, salvias and veronica. These provided spring and summer colour but would die down for winter. Newer or updated borders might incorporate a number of shrubs to give year-round shape. There could be some structural forms in terms of sculpture or topiary. There might be evergreen giant cones and maybe some roses, rather than an entire bed dedicated to perennials.

The palette of plants available to us has extended dramatically over the decades. Ornamental grasses and ‘new perennial’ planting, including naturalistic swathes of perennials in subdued colours, are now likely to replace some of the more traditional herbaceous plants. This style of planting has ecology at its heart and the layers of plants tend to be interwoven to form patterns that might be found in the natural world.

A contemporary border will place even more emphasis on forms, shapes and colours that last for longer. Some borders now feature a restricted palette of plant varieties, perhaps chosen for the foliage colour or shape. For example, an entire bed filled with ‘strappy’ shaped leaves in plain green, a shady bed filled with just one variety of fern, or foliage that contrasts such as burgundy and yellow. The gardener will be ruthless when interlopers try to seed themselves amongst such a carefully designed setting.

Making a comeback

Island beds filled with small conifers and perhaps a few rocks were a feature of the 1970s. Over the years we have tended to shun the idea of including these within a planting scheme, perhaps because some of the dwarf conifers grow larger than anticipated. They are beginning to make a comeback, however as we learn to embrace their charm. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show tends to set the trend and over the last few years these old favourite plants have been featured and applauded, along with hydrangeas, rhododendrons, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

The Diary of a Local Mum Simple Pleasures

Recently, I was offered some tadpoles from a friend who had an excess of frogspawn in their pond. I jumped at the chance!

I used to love watching little tadders develop and grow into teeny tiny frogs when I was a little kid. It amazed me – and still does – that these little black wiggly things can turn into something entirely different in such a short space of time, and seeing this transition occur is fascinating.

I must have temporarily forgotten that my kids are no longer toddlers, but teens … because when I introduced my exciting ‘surprise’ the reception was, well, underwhelming. It barely warranted a glance up from their phones, to be honest. Now, I don’t know a huge amount about TikTok but I doubt it can compete with the excitement of TADPOLES! Surely not?!? Apparently so.

Anyway, I didn’t let their lack of enthusiasm dampen my spirits so I set up my new pets in a little bucket home. Suffice to say, the teens’ initial frosty reception began to thaw. Their interest was piqued. I caught them once or twice glancing in the tadders’ direction and, very soon, they were hanging their noses over the bucket with actual, undeniable curiosity.

The next day, their grandparents called round. One of the first things the kids said to them…? ‘We’ve got tadpoles! Do you want to see?’ Ha. Not too cool, after all.

I’ve refreshingly reached that age where I like what I like and I don’t care at all. Yep, I’ll happily spend time watching tadpoles and I’m not bothered who knows it or what they think. There are so many simple pleasures to be had in life but somehow, between the baby/toddler years (when they’re awestruck by absolutely everything) and adulthood, there comes a time when taking an interest and gleaning enjoyment from simple things can be a bit of a slow burner. There are external pressures and fear of judgement about what you do, what you like, how you look, what you say … and those things all shape the way kids feel. This can dampen their initial reaction and cause reluctance and reticence, especially in response to

things that their parents suggest may be interesting because, as they begin to forge their own path, they become immediately doubtful about anything we oldies call ‘fun’!

As parents, we become used to our kids giving us the side-eye, watching with suspicion, disapproval or veiled curiosity as we find our own enjoyment from simple things. We, in turn, smile inwardly with amusement knowing that, given time they’ll probably give it a go and enjoy it too – whether that’s in hours, days or years. I remember, as a teen, rolling my eyes at my mum’s bird watching hobby but now, decades later … pass me the binoculars! I’ve even got an app for identifying bird song when I’m out and about! My mum, of course, finds this hilarious and I’m not too big to admit that maybe, as a disinterested teen, I was wrong.

We all go through this cycle – interested, disinterested, interested again – it seems to be a rite of passage as we develop our own personalities, so don’t take offence when your kids shun your favourite TV show, scoff at your hobby, or seem totally unimpressed by your fascinating facts. These things are sinking in whether they like it or not, and one day they’ll probably do exactly the same to their own kids, to be met by the same reception, as they give a knowing smile…

Belper People of the Past: Reverend Thomas Jackson of the Whitechapel Mission

What a prank! Some Belper youths looked in through the window of the Primitive Methodist Chapel and saw a group praying for rain. They climbed on the roof and tipped buckets of water down the chimney so it landed on their heads. The police were called, but the young men escaped. One of them was Thomas Jackson who fled to Sheffield, became a Sunday School teacher and later went to London where he devoted his energies to supporting the poor, which led to setting up the Whitechapel Mission.

Born in a small cottage at Windy Gap in 1850, Thomas was a nailer before his undignified departure from Belper. He was the cousin of my Belper great-grandmother Hannah Jackson who kept in touch with him throughout his life. Thomas married a Sheffield girl called Annistacia Ramsden and the couple had five children, four of whom survived to adulthood.

Once in London they settled in Walthamstow where he took over a disused independent chapel. Shocked by the poverty in the East End of London, he set up a Sunday School, Temperance Society and then opened three more chapels where he could offer help to the poor. Later he set up similar services in Clapham and then concentrated his efforts on Whitechapel, where attempts had been ongoing for some years to set up the Mission on a sound basis.

In 1897 he raised funds to give the Whitechapel Mission a place from which to operate. There he set up a night shelter and gave support to hundreds of destitute young men. He also started a medical mission, charging people one penny for advice and another penny for medicine, treating thousands of people in the days before the NHS. Known locally as the “Bishop of Whitechapel”, towards the end of his life he was honoured by George V at Buckingham Palace.

My uncle showed me a letter which Thomas sent to his cousin Hannah in 1931. He tells her that, in spite of poor health, he would like to visit Belper to preach at the Chapel anniversary, which he did in June of that year. I can imagine the amusement (or perhaps annoyance) of the Chapel elders, remembering the events of years before!

When he died in 1932 the Chapel held a memorial service in his honour. In the 1950s the Methodist Minister Rev. Connolly wrote a play about Jackson’s life which was performed at the Chapel. Sadly their place of worship was demolished in 1966.

In the nineteenth century Primitive Methodism attracted the poor and socially excluded by holding open air services and camps. Jackson was a popular open-air preacher and in London he was known for holding impromptu services, singing and preaching in East End drinking houses usually considered too dangerous to enter.

The Mission is still very active today and its work is much the same as it was in Jackson’s time – providing accommodation for the homeless, setting up food banks and opening soup-kitchens, perhaps a reflection on how little progress has been made in the last hundred years.

Now that summer is finally here, it is likely we will all hear a bit more from our neighbours – perhaps spending more time in the garden, at the local park or even just at home with the windows open.

Unless the weather has other ideas, children will be playing outside and hopefully we will all be enjoying everything the local area has to offer. Unfortunately, summer is also a time when noise or other behaviours can become a nuisance, which can really affect how you feel about being at home or in your neighbourhood.

There are things we can all do to help, such as thinking about how our behaviour might affect other people, as well as being tolerant of our neighbours. Often, people are not aware they are being a nuisance and a simple conversation might be enough for things to improve.

However, where there is repeated antisocial behaviour, the police, councils and housing providers are working together to help make our communities even safer by raising

It is also a good idea to talk to your children, especially as we approach the summer holidays. Please make sure they understand the importance of doing the right thing and reporting nuisance behaviour – especially if they know the names of those involved.

Keeping a diary is a good way to monitor and record persistent antisocial behaviour and can be used as evidence to support further action by the police and partner agencies. The sort of things to keep a note of, no matter how insignificant they may seem, could include:

• The exact time, date and location of the incident

• What they were doing

• How their actions affected you and /or others

• Any other witnesses

Bereavement Matters

Some time ago I wrote about how the death of music icon David Bowie could change the funeral industry and, seven years on, that prediction seems to have come true.

This is because, at the time, the Star Man created a stir by opting against the kind of send-off we’d expect from a titan of British music, preferring a direct cremation instead, with no get-together at a local church and no pictures of his coffin being borne by his pall-bearers.

For many people it was the first time they’d heard of such a thing – a funeral without a service. But they had long been an option offered by funeral directors and it wasn’t long before more families started looking into them for their loved ones too.

Now, where the percentage used to be in the low single digits, I would estimate that 10% of our funerals are direct cremations.

The figure for the national average is around 12%, but we are now starting to see some confusion arise thanks to the power of advertising, through which the concept

of direct cremation, also known as an unattended funeral service, has become known as a Pure Cremation.

This isn’t applicable, because Pure Cremation is a company’s name, rather than a generic description, and it describes a specific type of direct cremation, in the same way that we also offer a specific direct cremation service, which includes using a crematorium that’s local to the family.

Buying a funeral for a loved one is an emotional decision, no matter how you say goodbye. People want them to be looked after and to know what’s happening to them and they want choice – which is why they should be aware of what they’re signing up to.

Understanding that an unattended funeral can be just the way they want it helps to ensure that their wishes for their loved one can be properly carried out – which makes a huge difference when people are experiencing grief and starting their bereavement journey.
