Welcome This is the AUT ABC Student Guide, designed to help you learn all about the various services and facilities that are available to you. Inside you will find an alphabetized directory of everything that you would (hopefully) need or want to know about while studying. Each entry is accompanied by a QR code like the one below, which will direct you to where you can find more information.

Absences If you are unable to make in to class for any reason during the year it is important to inform your programme leader in advance (whenever possible). This is because you may miss out on an important or compulsory part of the paper which could cause you to be unable to finish your paper on time. If you are absent due to sickness AUT provides free health care to students who sign up with AUT’s GP. Visit the Health and Well-being section for more information.
After hours When studying afterhours at AUT you are resonsible for your own safety, however if you require help or feel unsafe you can call AUT Security on +64 9 921 9997. If you’re concerned about walking between buildings and campus car parks, a security escort is available during both the day and night. Once again contact AUT Security (in advance) to arrange an esort
After Hours Access Cards After hour access cards can be aquired through security Wellesley, WE Block, Level 3, Main reception. You can get access forms through your programme adminstator, which will give you access to your programmes facilities. You must carry your Student ID card on yourself at all times to be able to present it to any security staff. Without it you will be asked to leave the building. Advise Security immediately if your card(s) is lost.

Computer Labs AUT University provides facilities such as computing, scanning, CD burning and printing facilities for AUT students. Computers are available on each campus at “Tech Central�. These computers can be booked online for a maximum of 2 hour booking at a time. We also have a number of first-come first-serve computers. This includes Wi-Fi enabled laptops which are issued at Tech Central and can be used anywhere in AUT premises.

Counselling AUT provides students with a free counselling service to help you privately and confidentially talk through your problems and concerns. Counsellors will listen to you sensitively and without judgement, and will try and see things from your point of view. We provide a practical and solution-focused counselling approach to student concerns. Online counselling is also provided.

Clubs At AUT, there are many ways to get involved, be social and improve your time here. You can quickly fill your time outside of studying by joining one of the various clubs AuSM has to offer. Complaints & Concerns We appreciate that although we strive to provide you with excellent care that at times you may have cause to complain about your care from our centre. We would like to assist you in finding an acceptable resolution of your complaint. We encourage you to speak with the staff member concerned in the first instance. . If it is not comfortable for you to do so or the issue is not resolved, you can contact our complaints officer. We welcome your feedback on our services. Exams
Most programmes are assessed with exams. The Student Learning Centre offers workshops and help with test and exam skills. If you cannot attend your exam it is important that you contact your lecturer, programme leader or programme administrator and let them know asap, or at least within 14 days of the date of the exam. They will advise you about what to do in this situation. If you don’t have a valid reason, you will receive a failing grade. It is also a good idea to talk to a Student Advisor for assistance.

EMAIL SErvICES WebMail is web-based email which means that it can be accessed from anywhere you have internet access. When you enrol at AUT, you automatically get a personal email address based on your login name as well as 40MB of email storage. If your login is abc1234 then your email address would be abc1234@aut.ac.nz. To access your AUT WebMail click on the eMail tab via the UniCentral site or go to http:// webmail.aut.ac.nz. Forwarding AUT WebMail Emails To Personal Emails You can have the emails forwarded from your AUT WebMail
account to your personal email by following these steps: -Open up a web browser, for example Internet Explorer. -Log in to the AUT login page (http://distance.aut.ac.nz) -Click on Change Settings. -Check the Forward My Email checkbox and enter your personal email address. -Click the Change My Delivery Method button. Note: you must have money in your internet account in order to receive, send and forward emails from or to an external email address.
Financial services If you need advice on how to budget effectively or you need help to make ends meet, visit Student Financial Services. They have a team of helpful, friendly and approachable staff who can help you sort out money matters. They also help with Budget planning and advice, money management tips, student hardship grants, information about AUT’s childcare subsidy, assistance with student loans and allowances

HArrassment I f you feel harassed or bullied by another student or staff member, it’s best to speak out rather than stay silent. Harassment is an unwelcome behaviour at AUT. Bullying of any form is unacceptable and should be dealt with as soon as possible. ID Cards Use your AUT student ID card to access library and computer facilities, use photocopiers and get student discounts. You will automatically receive your ID card when you have been enrolled and invoiced for your papers – if you have supplied a photograph

Student Job Search AuSM is one of the student associations that is provides funding for SJS. SJS provides work opportunities for students that suit study schedules. It is a universal service available to all AUT students. All current, intending and recently graduated tertiary students from a registered and approved tertiary education provider can register with Student Job Search.

Library The AUT library is a valuable resource for every student, containing almost any book you will need for your projects and study. All you need is your student card to be able to borrow books. Lost property Lost property is kept for a short time (no longer than a week) at all three campus Libraries, before being passed to Security (at City and North Shore) or AUSM (at Manukau). Valuable items such as wallets will be passed to Security immediately. If you’re looking for something you think you may have lost in the Library, first check at the Library Lending and Help Desks and the IT Help Desk. Lastly check with Security (at all campuses - phone 09 921 9999 ext 9997) and AUSM (at Manukau).

medical centre/servics Health, Counselling and Well-being is a full general practice (GP) health centre. We have male and female doctors and nurses who provide confidential health advice and treatment. Routine consultations are FREE for domestic students who register with us as their GP. You can make an appointment by phone, or by dropping into our centre. Domestic students who enrol with us now can have free routine consultations with the doctor or nurse. Mentors Starting university is an exciting yet challenging time – meeting new people and making friends, learning new skills and dealing with new pressures. Even the simplest things like finding your way around campus can be a big task. That’s why student ambassadors make a huge difference in the life of a first year student. What is a student Mentor? Student Mentors are experienced students who volunteer time to help new students at AUT. They are able to provide you with advice, information, direction and support.
Each student mentor is assigned a group of 10 to 15 first year students at Orientation. During the semester you can contact your student mentor to ask questions, seek advice or find out information. Mental health AT AUT we appreciate that our students come from diverse backgrounds with individual skills and life experiences. The Student Advisor - Mental Health offers support to AUT students to ensure their mental health needs are being met and students can achieve their academic goals. o-WEEK AuSM (Auckland Student Movement @ AUT) provides a range of entertainment at the beginning of each semester. AuSM Orientation The most anticipated event of the year is AuSM Orientation, which is held at the beginning of Semester 1 each year. AuSM schedules a variety of activities, concerts and events over two weeks for students to enjoy. Most events are free or heavily subsidised for AUT students. AuSM also dishes out student diaries, wall planners and booty bags jam-packed with freebies during Orientation. Daily free feeds are provided on each campus.

parking Because of the high demand for parking in the central city, AUT can’t provide on-site parking for city-based students during the day. Parking in the city usually costs from $8 to $16 a day. It’s a good idea to consider other transport options to the city, such as public transport. There are a number of mobility parking spaces at the AUT City Campus.
After hours parking A small amount of parking is available between 4.30pm and 9.30pm, Monday to Friday Located in WL Block, St Paul Street Cost: $110 per semester, $220.00 per year

room numbering Each AUT room has a five-digit or six-digit code. For example, WF805. There is extensive signage on each campus to direct you to buildings. The first letter indicates the campus: W - Wellesley Street East (City Campus) A - Akoranga Drive (North Shore Campus) M - Manukau (South Campus) -The second letter indicates the building. In this example, F Building. -The next one or two numbers indicate the building level. In this example, level 8. -The last two numbers indicate the specific room number. In this example, room 5.

Scholarships AUT’s scholarship office provides information and advice on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships. Application forms and regulations for scholarships can be downloaded from the AUT scholarship database. Information about how to apply for individual external scholarships is also available. The database allows you to search by name, level or subject area.

Security You need to accept responsibility for your own personal health, safety and security on campus by taking simple, common sense precautions. -Make sure you know the location of security help phones on campus. -Recognise potentially dangerous situations before they develop. Trust your intuition. -Have a “safe place� you can retreat to if you feel threatened while on campus. (Library or other public area that is well-lit and occupied) -Be prepared to scream or shout loudly if threatened

Student Loans The student loan is quite easy to get, but you must pay the money back. It is important that you apply for a student loan as soon as possible - well before your programme commences. As soon as you are out in the workforce and earning over a certain threshold, you will be paying back your loan. To get a student loan you must be a NZ citizen, permanent resident (for 2 years or more) or have refugee status. Just remember, whatever you borrow you will need to pay back.
Student Allowances You might be entitled to a student allowance while you are studying. The student allowance is designed to help with your living costs while you study. It is a weekly payment that you will not have to pay back. Transferring Transfer to another tertiary institution If you wish to transfer your programme of study to another tertiary institution, you will need to make an application to your faculty. You will be required to state your reasons for transfer and supply proof of acceptance from the new institution. Any refund will be calculated on a ‘pro rata’ basis dependent on the length of course. There is a charge of $50 for this service.

Transport AUT University proudly promotes sustainable transport to help reduce carbon emissions and support related health and environmental benefits. AUT can’t provide on-site parking for city-based students during the day due to high demand city parking. Campus shuttle buses at AUT run between the City, North Shore and South campuses (except weekends and public holidays). City campus stops are found outside WH building on Mayoral Drive. $2.50 for a 1-ride ticket $60 for a 30-ride ticket.

Withdrawing From Study If you wish to change or withdraw from your AUT programme of study, you may be entitled to a refund. You will need to inform your programme administrator in writing and record your withdrawal must be recorded on a Course Amendment Form (available from your faculty office) If you have completed less than 10% of the paper you are entitled to a full refund If you have completed more than 10% of the paper you will not be refunded and your results for that paper will be put down as ‘withdrawn’.
