Board of Directors
The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American music has made to history. Each year during Black History Month, the series profiles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to salute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Written Word and Music. Through a partnership with Allen University, on the last Saturday in January 2018, we featured some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public.

Auntie Karen® Foundation
The Auntie Karen Foundation is a global, nonprofit, 501(c) 3 charitable corporation certified by the state of South Carolina on October 31, 2001. The foundation’s mission is to create and implement a series of reproducible community outreach programs designed to empower, enlighten and educate through the arts. Programs include: Annual Young Entrepreneur’s Conference For the 15th year, this innovative conference held on the campus of Benedict College has brought together youth (ages seven to twenty two) from across the region to foster economic empowerment. Each year, ten young entrepreneurs under the age of twenty five are featured. Auntie Karen’ s Place TV Pilot: Auntie Karen’s Place The Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with SC ETV and Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital to produce a 30-minute DVD that uses puppets and music to provide a simple way to explain life skills such as: health, emergency preparedness, jazz music and financial literary. The Foundation received a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia and SC Competitive Grants program. Artpreneur/Technopreneur Classes The purpose of the Artpreneur/Technopreneur classes is to “inspire a new generation of business leaders through arts and technology”. Classes include: visual art, dance, creative cooking, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, spoken word and etiquette. The Auntie Karen Foundation’s Artpreneur pilot program started in 2003. Hugs From Carolina The Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with Auntie Karen Inc. and City Light Inc. to create Hugs From Carolina. Hugs From Carolina, a division of Hugs Around The World, has Olivia The Octopus spreading hugs to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The program was launched in Biloxi, Mississippi on October 14, 2005. Children were given an adoption kit which included: an Olivia The Octopus Hand puppet and the book “Olivia Gave A Hug Today”. Once again, Olivia and City Light Inc. joined forces with a Hugs Campaign in Saluda, SC. Legends of...(A Salute to Black History) The Auntie Karen Foundation pays tribute to the contributions of African Americans with the Legends of...Programs. Each year, the celebration includes: Black History Program with The Columbia Museum of Art, The Legends of...Master Class with CSAM (Center for Southern African American Music at USC) and The Legends of...Concert & Silent Auction (Koger Center) Gordon’s Garden The Gordon’s Garden Program was created to teach kids about healthy living habits. Gordon, an original Auntie Karen character, is an overweight, purple Jamaican Yam. The Jamaican Yams are used to teach healthy living skills to youth via music, books and DVDs. The fear that Gordon’s weight and eating habits are putting him at risk for developing diabetes was the inspiration for the garden.
Auntie Karen’s character Olivia The Octopus is an International Jazz Diva. The Hugs Around The World campaign was created to have Olivia travel the world giving hugs. To date Olivia has traveled to Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Japan, Holland, Ghana and Nigeria.

A Tribute to Prince..... featuring Morris Day and The Time & Sheila E
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016)
was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Prince was a musical innovator who was known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range. His music integrated a wide variety of styles, including funk, rock, R&B, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He won eight Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the film Purple Rain.He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Morris Day & The Time With his dynamic dancing and smooth yet gutsy vocals, Morris Day played an essential role in the development of the Twin City dance/ club sound of the 1980s. A founding member of Prince’s band, the Time, he remained with the group from 1981 until 1984, when he launched his solo career. Returning again in 1988, he also performed and recorded with the Time from 1990 until 1991 and then after 1995. Day’s involvement with Prince traces back to 1980, when his composition “Partyup” (originally recorded when he was a member of the Enterprise), was covered on Prince’s Dirty Mind album. Releasing his debut solo album, Color of Success, in 1985, Day reached his apex with his second solo album, Daydreaming, two years later. Produced by ex-Time members Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, the album included the chart-topping R&B tune “Fishnet.” Day released his third solo album, Guaranteed, in 1992. After Guaranteed, Day toured occasionally without any new product. He finally returned to recording in 2004 with It’s About Time, a mostly live album with a few new studio cuts, one including a guest appearance by rapper E-40. Day has also appeared in several films and television shows.
Sheila E During the mid-’80s, Sheila E. was the biggest and brightest of Prince’s protégées, unique in seeming that she could stand toe to toe with the Purple One. Certainly during his post-Revolution tours of the late ‘80s, Prince showcased Sheila E., the culmination of an association that began when Prince wrote and co-produced her 1984 breakthrough, “The Glamorous Life,” and duetted on “A Love Bizarre,” the 1985 follow-up that was her second-biggest hit. This close association often framed Sheila E.’s career entirely in terms of Prince, but she was a successful musician prior to entering his orbit, recording with George Duke and touring with Marvin Gaye, and she worked steadily afterward, touring with the likes of Ringo Starr and recording her own albums. As the daughter of legendary jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo, Sheila E. -- born Sheila Cecelia Escovedo on December 12, 1957 -- was born into a musical family that also included her uncle Alejandro Escovedo. Sheila E. began her professional career just prior to her 20th birthday, playing percussion on 1976 albums by Alphonso Johnson (Yesterday’s Dreams) and Merl Saunders (You Can Leave Your Hat On) and her father’s 1977 session, Solo Two. She joined George Duke’s band in 1977 and moonlighted on sessions by Con Funk Shun, the Rowans, and Herbie Hancock. During the early ‘80s, she continued to play studio sessions, then landed a spot in Marvin Gaye’s touring band in 1983. MASS
A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers MASS brings profound messages of peace and unity
March 2 & 3, 7:30 and March 4, 3:00 Koger Center for the Arts South Carolina Premiere The USC School of Music celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with his monumental theatre work – one of the most profound stage works ever created in English and an iconic piece of Americana. The epic stage production includes two orchestras, a rock band, a blues band, choirs, singers, dancers and actors, and features as the Celebrant, tenor KEVIN VORTMANN, who has performed the role to critical praise with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Sung in English, Latin and Hebrew.
