01. NEW ORLEANS FILM CENTER New Orleans has long been at the center of attention, with it’s diverse cultures and horrific natural disasters. Because of this, New Orleans is in a perpetual state of change: destruction and rebuilding. One way to preserve the vibrant history and cultures of New Orleans throughout it’s constant state of change is film making. Film making has always had a large influence in New Orleans. It gives the people a chance to tell their many stories, providing inspiration and hope to others. The mission of the New Orleans Film Center (NOFC) is to provide a forum for students, professionals and community members to learn, teach, and express their views on topics related to film. This building will serve as a public gathering space, celebrating the vibrant culture of New Orleans through the art of film making. It will provide film related classes as well as public exhibition space. The main goal of this program is to inform, inspire and interact with other students, community members and professionals who have a common interest in film, culture and history.
The New Orleans Film Center (NOFC) would be located along Magazine Street, for it embodies the very essence of New Orleans. This is a street rich in culture, history and tradition; It is a street so vibrant with life and focused on interaction, not only between people, but with the built environment and nature, that one cannot help but be pulled into the experience. This street has a sense of pride, professing its love of New Orleans. This film institute will focus on three main aspect that are most prevalent along Magazine Street, as well as throughout all of New Orleans; Interaction, history and responsiveness to both the community and nature. These people have been through unimaginable tragedies, but still they prevail. Now, it is their turn to teach the rest of the world what it means to truly live.

This will be accomplished by making the ground floor very light and accessible. By using sliding, louvered doors along the ground floor, the cafe is able to completely open up to the exterior, creating a strong visual and physical connection with the communtiy. Due to this feature, people are naturally drawn into the film center. It also creates a wonderfully fexible open air venue for exhibitions, film screenings, social gatherings and cultural connectivity and communication.

Embracing interaction and responsiveness, the NOFC will focus on the physical and mental concept of permeability, blurring the line between exterior and interior, public and private, young and old, black and white. The NOFC should create an experience that is inviting and will pull visitors and community members into it, evoking curiosity, communication and inspiration. The building should feel as if it dissolves into the community, embracing the culture and creating a very personal experience.

02. CHICAGO OPERA HOUSE Located at the corner of W. Harrison Street and S. Wells Street along the Chicago Riverfront, this opera house was designed to be a major icon for downtown Chicago. It would have the capacity of holding up to 2500 audience members. Integrating this building into the language of downtown Chicago as well as addressing the Chicago River were two main focuses of this project.
TITUTE
In order to work with the scale of the buildings in this area, it was decided that a large arm would be added to the south side of the opera house. This arm would house all of the support spaces for the audience members, including a cafe, bars, a restaurant, a VIP lounge and a ballroom. It would also house spaces that could be rented out separately as offices, shops or any other commercial space. As for addressing the Chicago River, docking is provided so people are able to arrive to the opera by yacht. There is also a river walk with a waterfall and infinity pool for people to sit and enjoy the views.

03. 01. ART CENTER
9th STREET
This project was to be an extension to the existing Lawrence Art Center in downtown Lawrence, Kansas. The site is located on the corner of 9th street and New Hampshire, just one block east of Massachusetts Street. There is always something to do on Mass. Street, whether it be go to a restaurant and shop or join one many festivals that take place along the street. The energy found on this street flows over into the surrounding streets, creating a wonderful environment for creativity. The purpose of an art center is to evoke creativity and discovery through the exploration and experience of the arts. The concept for the Art Center extension continues with the idea of exploration and creativity through its form. The form is created by two intertwining and over-lapping volumes, which foster many interesting space both indoor and outdoor. These overlapping and intertwining spaces create a sense of curiosity, pulling people into the building so that they can discover for themselves just what is really happening.
EXISTING LAWRENCE ART CENTER
Upon entering the Art Center, the visitor is confronted with a grand three story atrium, allowing an abundance of natural light to enter The open central gallery/ lobby is a perfect place to host a number of events. Both the ballroom and the central gallery can open up to the east plaza creating an exceptionally fluid, inviting space for parties and other such gatherings. As one continues up to the second floor, they are greeted with a multi-terraced art gallery. All activities on the second and third floor overlook the central gallery.

04. EUROPAN 11 Europan 11 is a European federation of numerous national organizations which manage architectural competitions. Each year this federation hosts a design competition in which the objective is to inspire and recognize Europe’s young architects and urban designers. Its objective is also to help cities and developers, which have provided sites to find innovative architectural and urban solutions for the urban renewal and transformation of their location.

“Good-quality planning with a focus on sustainability should generate an evolution in its environmental and human components that is consistent on all scales. It has become a strategic factor, since it can enhance the economic, social and cultural attractiveness of a region, city or locality, and also boost local identity.” -Europan 11
40% OF VIENNA IS FOREST
“For a municipality, the quest for sustainability entails the production of areas that bring quality of life to everybody, in other words the appropriation of public space and ease of access to amenities and services. A sustainable approach also involves tackling the question of nature. Whether developed, wild or in the form of local agriculture, nature needs to be reconciled with the urban fabric in order to enhance the territories of the city and protect resources, biodiversity and the urban future.” -Europan 11

Hietzing has the second lowest developed area in Vienna, and consequently, high property values. Until the 19th century, the Speising area of the district functioned much like a small village on the outskirts of the city: self-contained with only small commercial shops. Recent construction projects such as the Orthopedic Hospital have caused rapid development and transformed the older areas of the quarter. As a result, there is a high density of doctors in the area as well.
The pedestrians have no place on the site. It is enclosed by various modes of public transportation. The pedestrians must walk quickly, with no areas of rest.
SITE
The bike has its place on the site due to the provided bike trails but they must stay very alert as a result of the close proximity of pedestrians and other forms of transportation.
: SPEISING TRAIN STOP
The site is located above an important new railway tunnel which will run underground. This new high speed railway has the purpose of improving the east-west connection of the national train lines. The surrounding area to the site is dominated by historical suburban housing, characterized by low-rise developments (mostly housing of good quality) with a lot of green spaces. The tunnel construction has blocked a very important pedestrian path between Lainzerstrasse and Speisingstrasse. Along the northern and southern border of the site two public transport stops integrate the area in the transport network of the city.
The tram is the most commonly used form of public transportation in Vienna. The tramway is a major vector for the interconnection between different districts of the city. The train is the main mode of transportation in Austria at the regional and national level.

Because of the prime location of the site, it was decided that it would be a main transportation hub for Vienna. A large train station with an underground library would be placed along the existing train tracks. This train station would also be home to kiosks where one could buy bus and tram tickets. Sustainable, low-cost community housing was placed near to draw a younger crowd to the area. Community gardens were incorporated into the housing location, providing a sustainable way to feed its residents as well as providing a source of income for the local farmers market (ideally taking place along the pedestrian walkway to the north of the housing).
