EARTHEN SOLAR COOKERS

This is a 3D exploded view of earthen solar cookers designed by late eco architect Didi Contractor, as part of documentation of the construction process. This was done as part of an engagement with Dharmalaya Institute, Himachal Pradesh, which receives volunteers of all ages. The construction process had to be presented in a way thay would be easy to understand for a lay person of any age interested in construction.

the second layer of glass sits on a wooden seperator with wool around it, with mud plaster coming up to secure the first piece of glass so that it cannot move.

the first layer of glass is placed on top of wool to prevent contact between the plaster and glass and therefore prevent cracking.

metal sheet is creased, folded and painted black to create the parts of the actual cooking chamber. These are nailed to the insides of the cooker. To the left is Didi’s origami pattern

rice husk is then poured into the cooker, this is an insulator between the metal parts and the walls of the cooker

the plastered cooker is lined inside with aluminum foil, shiny side out

when the basic structure is done, the cooker is plastered with a mixture of sieved mud, cow dung and paper pulp

wooden drawers lined with wool on the sides that are used for putting in food and taking it out

regular adobe bricks used for first couse of brickwork, stone free bricks used for second and third courses to prevent cracking

above this are three poles of bamboo extending outward by 2” on either side

the basic structure is made with a 4 - 6” foundation, where random rubble is packed with mud.

PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN

PRESENTATION

These visualizations were prepared for the Netherlands based group Nature Nomads as part of a proposal to use the city’s transistor boxes and the mandated access spaces around them to become useful and well designed points of gathering for the city public. These spaces could have honey boxes for bees, nesting spaces for birds, tourist information, work out spots and charging stations.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN PRESENTATION

This was a landscape proposal done for a residential school in the Sahyadri hills of western India, for their Guest House Complex. The goal of this presentation was to present dense and complex planting information in an easy to understand and concise manner. This presentation was used to communicate both with the client as well as the planting expert, and was used to aid the process of decision making with respect to the final plant palette.

WEBSITE FOR A PERMACULTURIST

WEBSITE FOR A CHILDCENTRIC LEARNING SPACE

This was developed as a dynamic Wordpress website. The logo was provided to the author and the website was designed to play off the logo’s language and reflect the child centeredness of the client’s organization. The stars in the logo were reused with a parallax effect to give the look of stars falling. The static website was coded by the author, and conversion of the static website to a dynamic Wordpress theme was done using Pinegrow.
