Last month we saw the World Cup fever grip all nations worldwide. From the 11th of June, millions of people across the world started watching the soccer spectacle on our own soil. June was a very short month, with all the excitement of the World Cup from the FIFA World Cup Concert to the vibe at fan fests and public viewing areas, and the gigs galore throughout the month. The euphoria in the streets of South Africa has been mind-blowing! Many of us were singing Wave Your Flag by Ka’Naan and other anthems by a variety of artists. Excitement has been in the air and we’ll definitely remember this moment of our lives. This 2010 FIFA World Cup has ignited and galvanised, for so many, an individual and a collective feeling and sense of passion, pride and patriotism. I’m sure we can all agree that this year’s tournament has been one of surprises! We witnessed big teams falling quite early in the tournament and smaller teams emerged quite stronger than anticipated. Bafana Bafana played very well against Mexico, struggled with Uruguay but fiercely went on to beat the mighty France. We’re proud of our national team and are anticipating its performance as a stronger squad in 2014. In all the festivities of the World Cup, I hope you all took time to commemorate Youth Day. This year’s Youth Day marked the 34th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprising. The City of Ekurhuleni organised a Youth Day concert at Dries Niemandt Welcome Village and later the viewing of the World Cup match between Bafana and Uruguay. The Ekurhuleni municipality adopted the theme Ekurhuleni Youth Working Together for Youth Development through Action: ‘A Year of Knowledge and Information.’ It encouraged its youth to wear school uniforms to commemorate June 16, and the youth supported this initiative. This month, be sure not to miss the Annual Ekurhuleni Youth Expo on the 16th of July. Sadly, June was not without its tragedies. The Mandela family lost 13 year old Zenani Mandela, and we also mourned the loss of legendary songstress Busi Mhlongo. Our condolences to your families and may your souls rest in peace. We started Kasi Times distribution in Ekurhuleni last month and will expand to the rest of Gauteng in the next few months. Expect more additions to Kasi Times through the coming months. We value your comments. Please continue to show your support and join our Facebook group, Kasi Times, invite your friends to join, and participate in our group discussions. You can also reach us by email, fax, post, or Twitter. Warm Regards, Nonie

THE TWO TONE EXPERIENCE

By Kutloano ‘Da Kruk’ Nhlapo kutloano@kasitimes.co.za

The essence of a homely premium entertainment brand has been introduced to a fun-loving, social location – Daveyton. Two Tone is a benchmark-setting entertainment spot designed to offer quality party and social experiences to the masses of a developing community. It is the fountain that will redefine and quench the experience thirst that has been roaming the East Rand nightlife scene for a while. This Daveyton-based urban meets metropolitan hang-out caters for a success driven, higher spending crowd without losing the essence of being eKasi. So, don’t be surprised when you run into a couple of Hennessy and Moet bottles on tables.

fter a number of drinks in the system one would always agree that a quick, fatty and saucy bite would be top of mind and complement the mind state. Two Tone boasts its mediumrare grilled kebab’s and ribs for the light drinkers and their juicy boere-wors rolls always go hand in hand with the beer drinkers. Two Tone’s entertainment structure is very versatile and caters for every individual possible within the venue’s target market. Two Tone also boasts its new CSI project, which has been running for four months now. 'Tone Experinces’ is based around creating experiences such as parties, zoo trips and other celebrations for the children within the spot’s vicinity.

that the Two Tone brand will soon have relevance to the entire community and change the negative perceptions that are attached to night spots. Umlilo wase VUTTA is represented by the vibe, atmosphere and people that frequent Two Tone, which makes its authentic experiences ones you’d always want to re-live. Location: Corner Barwa and Fokeng Street, Daveyton

This CSI project was started to give young township kids the experiences that privileged kids have. Although the project is still fully funded by the business, the club owners Andile Magadla and Sidwell Ratale have a strong belief that more sponsors will start looking their way and

AMA SNAKS By Kutloano ‘Da Kruk’ Nhlapo kutloano@kasitimes.co.za

NikNaks or amaNikNaks, as they are affectionely known around the nostalgic street corners of the township, have been part of the people for more years than our currency has changed. From the playful clown to the spirited boom box character the tasty treats have seen lunch tins, party packs and school trips than any other snack in the market.

Targeting the urban youth and subsequently the aspirant kasi youth, the campaign is said to allow the consumer an EXTREME, EMOTIONAL, EXPRESSIVE campaign that will constantly remain top of mind in the minds of consumers and become part of their everyday lives. A tall order, which NikNaks hopes will help it take off the shelves and transcend urban youth culture.

But with the recent change of market and competitors like Lays and Doritos, we saw NikNaks take the backseat and, as a result, lose its relevance. Well, not anymore! The brand is said to be making a trendier and more flavour explosive comeback with its new Nakover campaign, that plays on the connotations of a makeover and the reinven tion of an old favourite. One could say the snack is being suped up, street style, regain ing its street cred.

Pepsico, the holding company of NikNaks, have put together a month long campaign that speaks directly to its consumer by using ‘involvement’ as the key driver. The NAKOVER campaign invites consumers to create their own NIKNAKS experience wherever they go, by playing around with the use of stencils, paintballs and monumental city sites to create fun, unpredictable and . experiential moments in many young lives.

KASITIMES

A slick graffiti-like pack design has been seen in Auckland Park near Wits University. The campaign will hopefully hit the streets zasekasi soon, because that’s where their loyal consumers lie. Additional Info: •The NAKOVER campaign is a national campaign that targets young NIKNAKS consumers in each of South Africa’s three top cities, namely Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. •Headhoncho will be designing limited give-aways (caps; hoodies and t-shirts) and ambassadors gear to create a sense of coolness to all the merchandise. •The NAKOVER activation will be held in JHB, the venue is still yet to be announced. •Slogan: Taste the Nak, Restyle Our Pack... •Use www.niknaks.mobi as reference for the competitions and the entire campaign

Young, Gifted and Taking Over Zibusiso Mkhwanazi BY: Miss Poppy “Pops” Vilakazi pops@kasitimes.co.za Zibusiso Mkhwanazi is an inspirational young businessman who started moving towards his dreams of starting his own business at the age of 17 in his bedroom, with nothing more than only R2000 between him, his business partner Neo Motlhabane, and their business ideas. Both Zibusiso and Neo are living proof that impossibilities are indeed nothing. Like all of us, they were not immune to life’s trials and tribulations, but they persevered and their ambition and hard work eventually paid off. From studying about computers from books in the library and then practising on a friend’s computer, Zibusiso, who initially did not have a computer of his own, is today the Founder and Executive Director of Csonke Holdings, a successful investment company with investments in various fields such as IT, property, food, and advertising to name a few. He is also the Executive Chairman of Krazyboyz Digital, which is amongst the top leading digital advertising agencies in South Africa.

I

n 2008, Zibusiso created the Mkhwanazi Academy for Christian Entrepreneurship (MACE), a non-profit institution located in Vosloorus. The academy aims to bring about much-needed change to the youth ekasi by developing and supporting young entrepreneurs in Christian-based business programs. MACE is moulding and shaping a new type of youth mindset in South Africa. It seeks to shape God-fearing and highly ethical young people who will be supported by various government institutions, corporates, and NGOs. MACE offers a series of seminars that serve to empower entrepreneurs with information needed in the various professional industries in the business sector.

On the 20th of February this year, MACE conducted the Entrepreneurship Growth Conference 2010, which gained extensive media coverage and attracted aspiring entrepreneurs from across Gauteng. The aim of the conference was to find ways for the creation of new sustainable entrepreneurs in South African townships and finding mechanisms to support existing businesses to grow their businesses and become more competitive, so they can expand to do business beyond the township. What separates Zibusiso from other successful entrepreneurs today is his faith and love for God. He believes that it is faith that assures people, regardless of their history or background that they are special and are born to achieve great things.

Zibusiso has earned himself a National Diploma in IT and a Post Graduate Diploma in Corporate Law from the University of Johannesburg. His hard work and entrepreneurial spirit have not gone unnoticed. In 2007 he received the BBQ Young Business Achiever Award, where he was named Top ICT Individual in South Africa along with the title of Top ICT entrepreneur in Africa at the 10th Annual African Achiever Awards in 2008. In 2009 he was acknowledged by the Mail and Guardian as being amongst ‘the top 300 South Africans you must take to lunch’. He also won the Men’s Health Best Man Editor’s Choice Award in the same year. Zibusiso has been profiled in the media several times as one of South Africa’s up and coming business leaders.

His message to the youth is to take advantage of the opportunities present in our country today. “No longer do we have to worry about oppression, inequality and lack of educational opportunities that our leaders had to go through. ” At only 27, Zibusiso has the passion, drive and faith that all young people need to posses to make South Africa the powerful country it can become. He encourages us to draw inspiration from the likes of Patrice Motsepe and Aliko Dangole but says we must aim to surpass even their successes. He adds, “Young people should take on the world in such a way that pleases the Lord and with that, inspire generations behind us to follow the very same path.”

Business Start-Up Basics IS ENTREPRENEURSHIP

FOR YOU?

Many people dream of owning and running their own business and, despite the risks, growing numbers are taking the big step towards realising that dream. In business, there are no guarantees. There is simply no way to eliminate all the risks associated with starting a small business - but you can improve your chances of success with good planning, preparation, and insight. Start by evaluating your strengths and weaknesses as a potential owner and manager of a small business. Carefully consider each of the following questions:

Are you a self-starter?

It will be entirely up to you to develop projects, organize your time, and follow through on details.

How well do you get along with different personalities?

Business owners need to develop working relationships with a variety of people including customers, vendors, staff, bankers, and professionals such as lawyers, accountants or consultants. Can you deal with a demanding client, an unreliable vendor, or a cranky receptionist if your business interests demand it?

How good are you at making decisions?

Small business owners are required to make decisions constantly - often quickly, independently, and under pressure.

Do you have the physical and emotional stamina to run a business? Business ownership can be exciting, but it's also a lot of work. Can you face six or seven 12-hour work days every week?

How well do you plan and You may have to adjust to a lower However, success can be yours if standard of living or put family you are patient, willing to work organize? Research indicates that poor planning is responsible for most business failures. Good organization of financials, inventory, schedules, and production can help you avoid many pitfalls.

Is your drive strong enough?

Running a business can wear you down emotionally. Some business owners burn out quickly from having to carry all the responsibility for the success of their business on their own shoulders. Strong motivation will help you survive slowdowns and periods of burnout.

How will the business affect your family?

The first few years of business start-up can be hard on family life. It's important for family members to know what to expect and for you to be able to trust that they will support you during this time. There also may be financial difficulties until the business becomes profitable, which could take months or years.

lot of the time we spend a lot of money on marketing and advertising efforts to get new business. These efforts are often very difficult to measure in terms of return and are pretty costly. The biggest oversight a lot of people make is not to look at your own personal network as a source of business. If you were to look at your Outlook contacts, or the contacts you have on Facebook, do you know the occupation of each and every person in your network? Do you know what role they play in the company that they are currently working for, and what products or services they are actually selling?

Is there any way that their company could be a potential client for your business? Is it not possible that they are likely to point you in the right direction in terms of getting a key decision maker that could help you get a contract in their current company? A lot of the time we know our friends and relatives work somewhere but we do not bother to find out how to do business professionally together. Your contacts or "network" are your single biggest asset after your mind, and you should make sure you maximize on them. Opportunity is literally right under your nose. Don’t let it pass. Direct Marketing is the most cost effective and measureable marketing tool one can use to get new business.

assets at risk in the short-term.

Why Small Businesses Fail?

Success in business is never automatic. It depends primarily on the owner's foresight and organization. Even then, of course, there are no guarantees. Starting a small business is always risky, and the chance of success is slim.

Some reasons attributed to small business failure include:

•Lack of experience •Insufficient capital •Poor location •Poor inventory management •Over-investment in fixed assets •Poor credit arrangements •Personal use of business funds •Unexpected growth •Competition •Low sales Underestimating the difficulty of starting a business is one of the biggest obstacles entrepreneurs face.

hard, and take all the necessary steps.

Why Small Businesses Are Good?

It's true that there are many reasons not to start your own business. But for the right person, the advantages of business ownership far outweigh the risks. You will be your own boss. •Hard work and long hours directly benefit you, rather than increasing profits for someone else. •Earning and growth potential are far greater. •A new venture is as exciting as it is risky. •Running a business provides endless challenge and opportunities for learning.

The purpose of a CV is to get you an interview. An effective CV should catch the interest of the person who is reading it, show that you are a close match to the criteria they are looking for, and make them want them to find out more about you. Important sections to include in your CV are: Personal details: Your full name and surname, telephone numbers, email address, nationality, languages, location and driver’s licence, if applicable. Career objective: An objective gives focus to your CV. The reader will know immediately what you are looking for and if you are a good candidate for the advertised position. This is the section where you must impress the reader of the CV. Educational information: List brief details of your academic qualifications, starting with the most recent achievements or qualifications. List the degree, diploma, matriculation as well as the year and institution. It is also important to include all of your achievements while you were studying. List competitions won, awards received, leadership positions you served in. End this section with a short sentence about your extracurricular activities that you participated in. Work-related experience: List your most recent experience first, continuing in reverse chronological order. Use short sentences, positive language and highlight relevant achievements. Mention positions held, companies you worked for and also include the start and end dates (the month and year). If you have very little work experience, include your part-time, volunteer and vacation work in your CV. Detail the skills, abilities and experiences you acquired during your work experience. Because you want the reader to find information quickly, you will need to organize your experience in categories. Possible category headers are: Relevant experience, Volunteer experience, Teaching experience, Community service, Clubs/Organizations, Awards, Other achievements. Skills: It is important to match your skills to the job you are applying for. A CV highlighting relevant skills and experience will boost your chances of getting an interview. For different job applications, you should tailor your CV to each job. Detail specific skills you have gained and also their relevance to the job you are applying for. The ability to work on a computer is a key skill. List all the programs you are able to work with as well as your proficiency level on each program.

References: Add contactable references of previous or current employers, whom you have reported directly to, their designations and contact numbers. If this is your first job, it would be wise to nominate teachers or mentors as your referees. Always check with referees that they are willing to provide information about you before you include them in your CV.

• Include as much contact information as possible - any information that would enable you to be reachable during business hours • Make sure you create an email address for yourself and include it with your other contact information. Signing up for one is easy. Simply register on websites such as www.gmail.com or www.yahoo.com

Your referees should be able to answer questions on your achievements, work ethics and your personality. There are different types of references:

•Make use of action words such as created, completed, built, developed, initiated, improved, introduced, developed, negotiated, established, created, pioneered, delivered, increased, reduced, saved etc. • Concentrate on your achievements not your responsibilities - this means listing things you have done – such as products launched, sales increase, awards won – not rewriting your job description. • When emailing your CV, type in a message and the subject line should say what the purpose of your email is (i.e. Application for xxxx position). Also, attach your CV separately as a Wordformatted document.

• Personal references - about character or personality from family and friends • Educational references - given by a lecturer or teacher to confirm qualifications, results, performance • Work references - relate to how you perform in a work environment. Always try to use a manager or supervisor as a reference. Presentation: Make sure the layout of your CV is good. The CV must be easy to read and visually appealing – avoid using excessive underlining, bold italics, long paragraphs and many fonts. It is a good idea to use bullet point lists. CV Do’s • Read job adverts carefully, think about what you can offer the new job and adjust your CV to fit the specific job you are applying for. Demonstrate that you understand the nature of the job being advertised and explain why you want to work in that area • Research the company before you compile your CV • Keep your CV short and easy to read • Check for typing, spelling and grammatical errors • Include a career objective • Include a cover letter • Highlight briefly how your skills and abilities fit the job • Use only standard fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial and Verdana. • Save your CV in the standard Microsoft Word format (.doc)

CV Don’ts • Do not use flashy fonts, multiple colours, clipart, graphics or squiggly borders. Keep it simple • Avoid the use of ‘I’ and ‘my’ • Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors are not acceptable. Make sure you proof-read your CV

• Mentioning health problems in the CV. If you have some obvious health problem, inform the interviewer • Avoid personal details that have no connection to your professional profile (e.g. your age, number of kids, age of kids, other family information, non-work related activities, etc.) • Do not use abbreviations • You do not need to include your current or expected salary in your CV • Don't ever lie in your CV. Never lie about or exaggerate skills and experience; it will probably be uncovered in the interview or reference checks. Re-writing your CV will not overcome a lack of the required skills, experience, education or other qualifications listed for a particular position. Likewise, unexplained gaps in your employment history or having too many unexplained short job stints over a limited time period are two potentially troublesome issues that are difficult to overcome no matter how you write your CV. All you can do is present your history in as positive a light as possible, using the most effective format you can. Remember: The job-hunting process is not a quick one. It can take time to find a position that is suitable for you. Don’t give up!

back to focus... speaking of focus, we heard from Mo’s co-host, Sol Phenduka, that the guy is a perfectionist to the tee. He respects and puts his work first. He is the kind of guy who minces no words if he thinks you’re not pulling yourself up in what you do. “Look, this thing is simple; I give my all in whatever I do. And, if it doesn’t work out, I know I’ll look back brimming with smiles, ‘cause I would have given my all... though failure is not an option.” With a House compilation album and a brand of condoms, ROCK THE GIRLS, both in collabo with his colleague MacGyver, and more projects in the pipeline, we’re surely going to see more of this baritoned outhi van Soweto. His interests outside YFM are big if not paramount; here we’re talking about a man who has not so distant dreams of owning a radio station. How ironic that the guy who has influenced Mo’s love for radio happens to be Samuel Thobejane, a man with a lion voice, affectionately known as Sammy T. He used to work at Metro fm, Yfm’s obvious metropolitan rival. “Sammy T is my number one of all the radio greats. I have the outmost respect for that man; undoubtedly one of SA’s all time radio greats. With all due respect, don’t you think with the current crop of presenters Metro has, Sammy T can be the leader of the pack?” Now passion rears itself in his tone. Ease on Mr. Radio Prince.

Moeti‘Mo Flava’ Tsiki He has the Kasi Flava

w

Weeks before end of financial year, you are a radio presenter, more an ON-AIR talent, you know there’s going to be some reshuffling at the station and you are hosting a fortune teller on your show. You get curious and you ask her if she knows about your future at your workplace. Without doubt she tells you that great things await you, and you find yourself hosting the breakfast show when the new line-up of presenters is announced.

“ I know I am not arrogant “

It sounds well-written and perfectly played out right? Such is the story of Moeti Tsiki, a man we have come to hate in public and love secretly as we call him MO. You can’t help but be drawn to the man who hosts FLAVA IN THE MORNING at YFM. His road to radio is seriously a fairer if not far off fairytale to his appointment to the breakfast slot. He submitted his demo at the Y studios, at Rosebank then, and the same day, Bondo Ntuli who was the manager at that time, called him for an interview. He aced it the following morning, and was doing graveyard radio a few hours later.

We are at the Y studios in Hyde Park, and the man of the moment is relaxed on the couch, eloquently articulating himself as we chat about anything under the roof of the trend-setting youth radio station. He is not bothered much about what people say about his arrogance, “People will always have something to say about anything. I know I am not arrogant. I am just a guy who is confident and am not shy to say what I feel I am entitled to say or do.” His looks are of a confident Kasi chap, born in Dube and schooled at a multiracial school, Northcliff High in the northern suburbs of Jozi. “I can safely say my days at Northcliff High were the best of my life. I got exposed to different kinds of lifestyles. I had white friends, and I would at times sleep over at their place. The environment was different to mine back ko kasi, but that still made me take pride in my hood. Though, I cannot say I am fully proud to be from Dube when I have not seen much progress on lives of those I grew up respecting. My man, would you believe it if I tell you that the guy whom I was calling Bra Smang mang when I was still laaitie ko kasi, is still at the same corner we had once come to associate him with decades ago?

Since he is now by virtue of being, a breakfast host at YFM, he is an ambassador of the youth. What are the challenges that he has detected in most youths? “We as the youth are facing a one bigger problem than the drugs, alcohol, unsafe sex and the ignorance we have become famous for; APPROACH! How we approach things in life determines and ultimately brings about resultants such alcohol abuse, dangers of drugs. Come on now, it’s almost 2011, and do we still have to ‘sheep’ one another? I honestly think our approach, which in turn becomes our every day ethics is our downfall.” “An example closer to home is this...” He changes tone, “We run a club in Pretoria neh?” The club he is talking about here is the toast of Pretoria clubs, EKHAYA, which he co owns with Siz of the Siz&jones fame. “90% of the staff there are people from outside South Africa, and they willing to toil and make something out of their lives. They’re not expecting handouts like most peeps in most hoods have come to making a habit of. They know that to survive, you have to make sure you meet the ends where you’re least expected to reach,” he poetically puts it as Precious Kofi, his colleague, walks in and greets us with a warm smile. Focus Mr. Writer, it’s MO we’re here for! As I bring myself

So, how does Moeti unwind? “My man, there’s no time for such in this world. My hands are full, and I intend not to relax; well, I relax when I get time to sleep, and when I am in the loo!” We both crack. “I am not being silly, I’m serious! We owe our lives too much, and if we get to a point where we choose to relax when we could be dabbling our lives in different worlds then we are doomed. Life doesn’t owe me anything, but I owe it my all. I have to be on my toes and LIVE. I am not resting anytime soon boet”. So says abuti Mo. He reckons he wouldn’t be doing voiceovers for the SAMAs anymore. He started in 2007; such is the talent this Soweto born lad has. He was already the official voice of South Africa’s most prestigious music awards before he was 25. Music is something he really loves, OBVIOUSLY! He is also part of the music committee at the station, responsible for songs that get to be played. “Music is also a job. Artists and upcoming ones need to come up with good music so we never get to stop playing your songs. For you to do that, your music must really be radio friendly and be a hit so you get to make money f r o m

your SAMROs, RISAs and all other music agencies. YFM is the only radio station that plays lots of local music than any station. This way, we empower our artists. I’m proud to say that most of the local songs we receive get to be played,” so says the man who hates personal glories. “To answer your question about me having radio bursaries like other DJ’s, I have helped certain people, and some of them are working here at Y. It was not my connects that got them the job, it was how they sold themselves, the amount of commitment they invest in their craft, and respect they have for their dreams,” he says, looking around as if he wanted to call one of the very same people he spoke about. “There’s potential in every kasi my man, but it’s the personal drive that leads us to wherever we end up. Even the late Khabzela saw his life beyond Jozi fm, and went out and made a life for himself. If we can have the mentality of Khabzela, even on different specialities, we can go all the way.” He speaks so passionately about the drive in the youth. There’s a lot we want to know from him but we should just be OK with the hour and half we spent with him.

He has somewhere kae kae to run his business, condom brand, night club, breakfast show, voiceover work, and should we still go on? Let’s wrap it up and let the man who has your MO-rning flavour see through his day, we just wonder what his ambitious self is really going to conjure for his future. “Oh, to answer your fluent sarcastic question about the Cape Town fortune teller, NO, I don’t know her. I don’t know if she is in a wheelchair or what, but I should think about giving her a call to THANK her,” he screams from the vending machine next to reception. Ya ya ya, blah blah blah Mo, don’t convince us, we don’t doubt that; you are an example of HARD WORK AND ALL TALENT!

MANDELA DAY JULY 18 TAKE PART

B

orn on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa, Nelson Mandela has devoted his life to peacefully fighting for freedom and social justice for all. His life personifies the idea that one person has the power to make a difference and leave their unique imprint and change the world around them.

Mandela Day is dedicated to his life’s work and that of his charitable organisations, and to ensure his legacy continues forever. A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. As each person acts, they fuel an energy toward positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mr Mandela’s values – fighting injustice, helping people in need and practicing reconciliation. In his State of the Nation Address on 3 June 2009, President Jacob Zuma said: "An international campaign has been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organisations, called Mandela Day, which sums up what Tata stands for.” “Madiba was politically active for 67 years, and on Mandela Day people all over the world, in the workplace, at home and in schools, will be called upon to spend at least 67 minutes of their time doing something useful within their communities, especially among the less fortunate. Let us wholeheartedly support Mandela Day and encourage the world to join us in this wonderful campaign. " It is important to note that Mandela Day will not be a public holiday.

More about Mandela Day •Mandela Day has been created to inspire people from every corner of the world to embrace the values that have embodied Nelson Mandela’s life – democracy; equality; reconciliation; diversity; responsibility; respect and freedom – for these are the values of Nelson Mandela and they are his legacy to the world. •The Mandela Day brand icon represents Mr Mandela’s hand and the passing of the torch to each of us and our individual ability to make an imprint on the world. •Mandela Day is not a holiday – it is a day for all of us to opt in and show that we can all make an impact. •Mandela Day is a celebration of Mr Mandela’s life and legacy, as well as an opportunity for people internationally to join the mission to make the world a better place. •Mandela Day is about creating a global movement for good, which recognises – as Mr Mandela does – that positive change begins with small, selfless, individual actions. Mandela Day serves as a catalyst for people around the world to realise that each and every one of them has the ability to change the world through small actions. •On July 18 every year, people are asked to donate at least 67 minutes of their time in service to their communities. With Mr Mandela’s birthday having been accorded international status, it remains for every individual around the world to take up the personal challenge issued by the man himself and show how each one of us can make a difference, not only on July 18, but every day. What will be your contribution on the 18th of July?

"Education is the great engine to personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that the child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another". [Nelson Mandela] Source: www.nelsonmandela.org

dJ ZINHLE UNPLUGGED AND FUSED

Zinhle Jiyane (DJ Zinhle) stepped onto the South African DJ scene at a time when it was still dominated by male DJs. But, she quickly managed to turn heads and get noticed for her skills on the turntables and has today become one of the best female House DJs in SA. She got to work, filling in for DJs who couldn’t make it to events. She then entered the ‘How Fresh Can You Get Female DJ Challenge’ on DJ Fresh’s Breakfast Show, which won her the 22H30 to 23H00 slot every Friday and Saturday on DJ Tumi’s show on Yfm. It’s been a long road since then. Zinhle’s been a DJ and speaker at the Southern African Music Conference for two years in a row. She was also recently nominated by the Mail & Guardian as one of 300 young people ‘you have to take to lunch,’ which recognizes young South Africans who are making a difference in their respective careers. She is currently part of DJ Oskido’s show, Oskido’s Church, in the slot, Feminine Touch.

Up and coming artists needed for TV show TV production company Rapid Blue is inviting all up and coming musos to come and perform at its popular reality TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance." So You Think You Can Dance is currently in production for its second season in South Africa on SABC 1.

inhle never planned on becoming a DJ. In fact, she only got into it because of chance and circumstance. “My brother Zak owned a company that hired out sound equipment, and he had so much love for music that he would always de-stress through mixing vinyls at home. One day he showed me how mixing works,” says the young lady from Dannhauser in Natal. Her first proper gig happened when she was helping her brother set up for an event. The DJ was late so Zinhle stepped in and the rest, as they say, is history. Well, not quite... She did, after all, have to break some ground by entering an industry dominated by men.

The hour-long show is broadcast live every Saturday evening at 18:30, followed by the Results Show on a Wednesday evening. Each week, on the Results Show, a guest music act is featured. Rapid Blue invites interested artists to appear on the results show. The mid-week broadcast time-slot offers extremely wide exposure to artists appearing on the show. Interested artists may contact Zunaid Aziz on 072 188 3544 or email: Zunaid@rapidblue.com The show runs from August 28 to October 16. Source: www.mio.co.za

In January 2009 DJ Zinhle partnered with Nomndeni Mdaki to launch The Firm Understanding of Sound Entertainment Academy (FUSE), the first female DJ-focused academy in Johannesburg. FUSE Academy aims to empower young talented females in becoming DJ’s. The academy provides training, mentoring, and tutoring to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in the entertainment industry. The academy is located in Melville. Since its launch, over 60 students have graduated from Fuse Academy and some are already making waves in the South African entertainment industry. A NATION UNITED FOR BAFANA BAFANA

picture:www.sabcnews.com

With a final scintillating performance and a bitter fight till the end, Bafana Bafana silenced sceptics when they became the first African team to beat the former World Cup winners, France. Kasi Times captured some of the comments on the ground from a proud nation leaving the first round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with their heads held high. Shout SA: The goal now is for each one of us who are part of Team South Africa to win friends for life. Let history record that the 2010 FIFA World Cup was an event where everyone came to know and experience the beautiful heart, soul and spirit of a very special nation. Trevor Noah: Through to the second round, bonus. Uniting a nation behind one team and winning the hearts of the people, first prize. We are Bafana Bafana! Beatmaker: At the end, we have beaten France! Sal Masekela: So many opportunities, so many! Nonetheless, Bafana Bafana hold your heads high. You played today with heart. Sibusiso Mahlangu: I am proud of Bafana Bafana. Larryngitis: I didn't see the match but I'm very emotional right now. Nice try Bafana Bafana. Real talk, you made us proud! Mel Bala: It’s not the score line that impresses me. It’s Bafana Bafana's 21 shots at goal versus France's 10. We wanted it more. I'm so proud! Kabelo Mabalane: Well done Bafana Bafana. Thank you! I am proud of you! Now for 2014 Brazil! Xoliswa Zulu: Well down Bafana Bafana. We’re so, so proud of what you have achieved. You united SA. Thank you for that.

KASIMUSIC REVIEW

Sheer Musical Pleasure…

******

By Mphulo - The DJ

…is what the MTHii Essential Selections Compilations got to be renowned as. This time it is the 6 best years of the yester-years House classics compiled by DJ Tokzen aka Mthii, all power-packed into One Best of Essential House CD. The 13 track album presents a sultry selection of what can be termed ‘the finer side of House.’ Hits like Ron Hall & the Muthafunkarz’s The Way That You Love Me and Lorayne’s Something About You, really makes one feel like falling in love with this kind of genre, House. All in all, this is the kind of album that will bring the ‘new to the old….the old to the new’ to House music, and to top it up, it’s priced nicely. Everyone can afford to have a party with this CD whether there is a DJ or not. DJ’s can rock a party with all the tracks, saving you from missing that essential hit. MTHii ESSENTIAL SELECTIONS –Best of CD will make a great addition to your CD collection. Know what I mean? “IF U Don’t KNOW… Now U Know…”

Phathu Ratshilumela (MIO)

The MotswakOriginator is a debut studio album from Khuli Chana - a promising Motswako rapper. Much of the album is produced by Octave Couplet's Don Juan, who typically employs stripped-down, mellow beats, allowing Chana's soft rapping to take centre stage. A host of noteworthy producers, including Ishmael “Ish” Morabe, IV League, Towdee Mac and Jazzworx also add several beats to the 18-track offering. The album features guest appearances from Morafe, JR, Bongo Riot, Mpoza, Kay-G, Jon Jaz and Tarmasha. Thematically, it is linked to swagger, and the rapper takes the opportunity to showcase his marketable rap persona. Chana is considered one of the most innovative vernacular rappers in the country, having won a Best New Comer award at the 2009 Channel O Music Awards and a Song Of The Year award at the 2010 Hype Music Awards.

I have never doubted Malik's musical talent, ever! This is one artist that I feel has never been given enough space to showcase his talent in full. Even though he has not yet cracked the national market completely, his talent shall prevail. In an attempt to get the recognition he deserves, the extraordinary songwriter and amazing singer has unleashed another weapon, Mthulise. I have been following Malik's talent for a number of years now and it is exciting that some of the things that I was not entirely happy with in the past (using live instruments in his music, for example) have been addressed. For the first time, I can confidently say that this is the best project that this artist has ever put together.

DEEP LEVEL WE RUN THIS CITY VIDEO REVIEW By Michael Makwala

The theme is very clear. It has a short visual storyline. The duo is walking through the streets of a dingy part of Johannesburg’s inner city. They are dressed in fine kingpin attire that consists of tuxedos, top hats and canes.

I am convinced that Zola is one individual you'd give any piece of sound to, and he'd still keep it real like he does with the kwaito beats. With nineteen great songs, there are a few things that one can point out on this project, besides Zola's outstanding talent, obviously.

Schuks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to South Africa

***** By Larry Nqaba Mncube-Nhlane

This goes well with the storyline and it complements the rappers’ style of rap. Deep Level is not from the ‘BLING’ era, which counts in their favour as the local market frowns upon ‘Bling’ rappers.

Okay, this music video review is for Deep Level’s We Run This City track.

I have always thought that too much of anything can make one sick... but not after I listened to Zola's latest project, ‘Impepho'. One thing that I've always liked about Zola and the producers he works with is their ability to compose songs that can be listened to by people from different walks of life. Whatever can be said about Zola, what stands out is his rare musical genes, and this offering is exceptional.

*****

They're pursuing what seems to be a rough ‘gangsta’ who is on the run; he is the last of the old gangstas that they have to get rid of in order to officially ‘run the city.’ The visual aspect and quality of the video are highly impressive. The video is not over-the-top and it efficiently delivers its message.

This video deserves a lot of credit from its story, cinematography, to the twist at the end. None of the aspects disappoint. It’s a very wellput-together South African music video. I give it 4 out of 5 flashes

Schuks Tshabalala (Leon Schuster) and Shorty (Alfred Ntombela) are producing a survival guide to South Africa for tourists visiting the country for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Schuks Tshabalala is a teacher and tour guide to tourists from Germany, Ireland, Greece, China, France, India and The Netherlands and shows them the dynamics of life in South Africa. Shorty, as usual, is his best friend, assistant and conscience. If you are a Leon Schuster fan, this movie will be nothing new except the pranks he pulls; it is a new direction in delivery as usual. He shows how the general public reacts to certain compromising situations, which unfortunately exposes the negative side of South Africa. But, it has more good than bad. If you want to be in stitches with laughter, this is the movie to go watch with your family. Rating 3 out 5

ON THEWEB REVIEW A Vibey Kind of Life By: Motheo Movutta Khoaripe

Tough as nails… The iPhone 4 is sandwiched between two glass panels - the same material used in the windshields of helicopters and highspeed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stronger and 30 times harder than plastic, the composite is scratchresistant, durable and a fingerprintmagnet. When it's kept clean, though, the glossy and sleek exterior gives a refined feel that Apple has come to be known for. It’s a beauty, and that makes it very costly. Buying it through contract or upgrade would be a good idea. Other impressive gadgets the Apple corp. has released are the revolutionary Ipad and the advanced IOS4 software to go with both the mobile phone and a tablet Ipad. Microsoft who? ON THEWEB REVIEW Street Etiquette By: Motheo Movutta Khoaripe

Being eloquent in style is a nurtured skill because no one can ever teach knowledge of self and personal style. It is only common chivalry though, for one to attempt to share this skill with the next man and hope that he is guided to a path of style that better defines him or her. The street etiquette fashion crew are doing just that, using fashion as a thread to teach history and heritage of Urban African Americans by fusing urbanity, originality and diversity. The New York outfit are causing waves globally having been featured in the male fashion magazine GQ, trends site The Cool Hunter and working with renowned photographer –TONE. .

BOOKREVIEW

An example of their commitment to heritage and mix of modern day style of wear are showcased on their advertorial, Sewn from the Soul, where they use photography and their own personal styles of apparel to honour African American greats. Their unique style of advising on fashion relies on stating the origin of the fashion item and breaking down the different ways it can be worn and also giving tips on looking good on a budget. Their dedication to themes and unique fashion items make their site a very practical lifestyle tool. It’s a cool website, especially for those who love their threads ekasi. Although most of their fashion advice is more focused on men, it’s still a great website. It could do with better graphics and media players. Website: www.Streetetiquette.com

A Goodbye to my Little Troubles By Batsie Masvinge

Aptly sub divided into four African topical issues: Justice and Liberation, Loveliness and Loneliness, Identity, and Spiritual, the emotionally charged 'A Goodbye To My Little Troubles' by Vusi Moloi is a fascinating first person-narrated celebration of the triumphs in the African struggles, employing superior writing skills and fascinating stylistic devices. Furthermore, the author desists from painting life with one brush. It’s a pragmatic picture: ‘a cavalcade of grief and joy, darkness and light, despair and hope' all cherry-topped

with an intriguing feministic approach, as the author celebrates the 'fairer sex' for their unconditional love, compassion and dedication towards the upbringing of children. The one man's anthology's thematic framework is mainly built around the poet's personal experiences from being a marginalised African child to his rise and passion to become the voice of the voiceless. It’s a thoughtprovoking, intellectually challenging piece of art that not only plays around with your inner emotions but also brings out an important assertion....

'You can be anything in this world' Vusi Moloi is a genius. Lovely piece of work, from the opening to the 'The Sangomas' to ‘The Ancestors' to the closing piece. By far one of the greatest African books I have read this year. It’s a must read.
