A hardened runner ...
130 MARATHON RACE
Søren Andersen has participated in the North Sea Beach Marathon since the first race was held in 2000. Søren tells with great enthusiasm about his participation in all the races: ”The fascinating thing about North Sea Beach Marathon is that you can never predict how it is going to be because of the different sand surface, wind and weather. I remember especially once we started in Hvide Sande and ended in Vejers. We had strong headwind all the way, and shortly after the start it began to rain. It was a very tough race, and many participants did not finish. When I came to the finishing line, I was undercooled and totally exhausted.” The very fact that the North Sea Beach Marathon is so unpredictable, is what appeals to the many participants. There is a guarantee for a marathon, which is hard and a challenge for even hardened runners. For Søren Andersen it is also the beautiful run along the North Sea, with the rough nature as background which means that it is a race, he enters again and again, and he is looking forward to each year. It requires continuous training to complete as many Marathon runs as Søren Andersen does. He talks about his daily running rhythm: ”I run twice a week in Taulov Motion. We run every Wednesday and Sunday. Additionally, I have a dog of the breed Irish setter, which requires much exercise. I often have it with me when I walk or run, and in the wintertime on cross-country skis if it is possible. My bike ride to and from work every day also helps to maintain a good shape ”.
Out of over 130 marathon there’s obviously some we remember better than others. Søren Andersen remembers some marathons for something special. ”I remember, of course, my first marathon in Hamburg, but also my marathon number 100, which I ran at Le Marathon du Medoc in France, which of course had samples along the way. That was one of the more unusual races, and I remember very clearly,” Søren Andersen tells. In 2016, Søren Andersen runs his 17th North Sea Beach Marathon. With start and finish in Hvide Sande he prepares for a race that both starts and ends in loose sand, and which almost guarantees helping tailwind 21 of the 42 kilometre.

INTERVIEW WITH RECORDHOLDER OF THE MARATHON Facts Jens H. Jensen • He has been running since 1993 – for 10 years as an elite runner on the Danish National Team – half marathon and marathon. • Has seen most of the world – running. • PR: 5 km 15.01, 10 km 30.52, half marathon 66.29 and marathon 2.22,15 • Born in Herning and lived there most of his life. • How did you start running? I worked with somebody, who had run KBH marathon, and I wanted to try that, too. What is your daily training rhythm (distances and training days during a week)? When I was an elite runner I ran 14 -18 pas a week about 180 – 210 km, and some weeks even more. Now I run about 80 km a week because I like running. • First marathon KBH 1994. • First North Sea Beach Marathon 2003. • Which Marathon do you remember best and why? There are many, but KBH 2001 I think, but also NSBM 2004 because I set the record.

In 2004 you ran North Sea Beach Marathon and set the current race record 2 hours 36 minutes and 46 seconds, what do you remember from that race? I remember that I left the Kenyan runner at 17 km, and that the last 15 km was very hard because of the loose sand, and it was a great feeling to run over the finishing line as no. 1 - only five weeks after KBH Marathon. I did not think I was in that shape.

INTERVIEW WITH CLUB CHAIRMAN MIRCO FISCHER What is the purpose of Club 100 Marathon Denmark? The association aims to bring runners together in an association, to spread awareness of marathons and the association and to be an ambassador for the marathon sport. Before the club’s formal founding, a number of runners had an informal Club 100 Marathon Denmark. It was led by our honorary member Anders Munch Madsen, who has over 600 marathons on his CV. It was a website with a ranking. At the request of Anders, we established in 2014 a real club, which we want to be the source for a growing number of activities to promote the marathon sport. Can you put a few more words on the description of purpose? Yes - marathon sport is evolving rapidly, and some runners with many races on the CV thought it was time to establish a formal organization to promote marathon sport. We aspire that the club can be a source of inspiration for runners who either are active marathon runners or would like to be. We generally like to promote running sport and work for increased physical activity and healthy lifestyle. Do you only run marathon? The majority of our members run the marathon distance. I would guess that 90-95% of the races are marathons. However, we see a growing trend that our members are trying other challenges. Many are involved in both 10-km and half marathon, where you can run much faster than in marathons. Club 100 Marathon Denmark has
actually cooperation with several half marathons, which incidentally is the running distance that international are fastest growing. Other members are grappling with ultramarathon where physical endurance and mental willpower plays a completely different role than in the short distances. Several members are also triathletes with outstanding results. Why do you run so much and so far? There are many conditions to mention, and it is different from the club members. Physical activity and healthy lifestyles are important motivation, without saying that we are a bunch of ascetics who cannot enjoy the pleasures of the table. We think probably a little more than most of what and how much we eat and drink. Everything in moderation. A good steak, a glass of red wine or a foamy gourmet beer are certainly welcome. Socializing is also an important parameter. Some might consider running a bit like a loner sport, for you ”just run alone”. Nothing is more wrong. You often find together in groups during races. Although you run fast, you talk very much in the groups while running. There is also a lot of fun before and after the races – in all kinds of run. You meet and small talk and you are happy for each other’s results and achievements. One of the club’s bad habits is that we drink too much coffee and eat too much cake after the races. The cake eating makes us less healthy. Many of the club members are also going on short trips or long trips to destinations, which you otherwise would not have went to. That happens

I also recommend that you set out realistic, ambitious and spectacular goals. If you have never run far, you could aim for the fantastic Copenhagen Half Marathon September 20, 2016 and as marathon debut in Havana Marathon in November 2016 or in the Dubai Marathon in January 2017. I wonder if the family cannot be lured to come with you. Less will do. Barcelona Marathon in March 2017 is highly recommended.

What do you think of North Sea Beach Marathon? The club has chosen to cooperate with North Sea Beach Marathon, because it is a serious, well-organized and spectacular event. We would like to support the race, because it excellently promotes the running sport and encourage even more people to stay physically active and have a healthy living. North Sea Beach Marathon is in our eyes profiling running sport in the best way. I hope that a lot of runners will participate in your event. It has deserved it. We will do our best to make it a festive and memorable race.
Do you have any advice for those who would like to try to run far? Is it not in the movie Forrest Gump, they shout �Run Forrest. Run. �? It is my simple advice. It is not that complicated. The thing is that you have to want it. You have to be driven by the intense desire to run a marathon or ultramarathon. It all starts inside your head. If it is in place, then the rest follows. You can get training by joining the local running club. You can subscribe to various magazines in which one can find inspiration and guidance on training and diet. Find some running friends, and systemize it. I’ll give you a little warning: Be careful not to climb too fast. Although many of the club members run several marathons every week, not everyone can just do it. It takes many years to achieve the necessary strength and resiliency.

INTERVIEW WITH JETTE SCHMIDT ABOUT NSBM North Sea Beach Marathon is a super good race. It is different from most races - it must be tested and run again and again. Are you as a runner attracted to run anything else than flat asphalt runs - then North Sea Beach Marathon is the right race for you - a race in the sand as far as you can look forward. Jette Schmidt from the Blovstrød Lions tells us this. She has a running CV, which includes a Danish Championship for Masters at the marathon distance and a victory in a 100 km race. Her personal record in the marathon is 3.16,26 hours, and she has always liked a good mix of flat road race and in particular races, which are different. In 2008, Jette was second in the North Sea Beach Marathon, and since then she has participated in North Sea Beach Marathon or Half Marathon every year. Jette is the type of runner who builds her season up on a few major events each year and afterwards finds a lot of interesting and different races that fit in the big events. North Sea Beach Marathon has every year been one of the races in her race calendar.
What Jette likes about North Sea Beach Marathon is that it is not the same race two years in a row. The only thing would be running in the sand, and that you at a very long distance can see the windmills behind the finishing line. One year it is hot and most spectators and cheering crowds are the ones, who are in the sea - next year it is cool and with a little rain. Other years again, it is super good running weather with 18 degrees. That is precisely what makes the North Sea Beach Marathon a race you must take part in again and again. Over the years Jette has experienced one-year cool with rain - so the following year rainwear was packed, but she did not think of sunscreen - with the sun in the back all day, she was reminded of the forgotten sunscreen throughout the race. Third year both rain gear and sunscreen was packed for the trip to Jutland. North Sea Beach Marathon is a race that is very hard on the day, but not as hard on the body in the end - so already one week after the race, she is ready to train hard again. When marathon on asphalt takes her a month to recover from, before she can train hard again. Running on the beach is not hard for the body in the same way - what she enjoys very much. Therefore, she does not need to remove anything else from her race calendar to make room for North Sea Beach Marathon. Some years ago, she put it into the race calendar and it has been there ever since. Jette is already looking forward to the North Sea Beach Marathon in 2016, when she of course runs again – and again.
