MIJU-TOPIA IS A CONCEPT design for a new way to shop retail in ‘the future’. Students were asked to come up with an innovative method for shopping retail in the year 2O5O. Taking inspiration from my own experience in Tokyo, I designed a way-finding system to enable shoppers to locate products more quickly and efficently. By creating a custom application that you would download on your smart phone, users are able to search for product, see where that product is available, and compare prices and inventory of all the retailers carrying that product. Once you have found the desired retailer, a map will direct you there from where ever you are in the city. When you are within a certain proximity of the searched product, your phone will display a color that correlates to a flashing light connected to the product. As part of the design, students were asked to incorporate their new shopping method into a mixed-use development and to design one of the retail spaces within the development.

Pinwheel house was the result of a long environmental study of the Sagebrush Basin eco-region in the Salt Lake Valley. Otherwise known as Antelope Island, this region is home to a variety of native vegetation and herds of roaming bison. But that’s not all that call this region home. This area is the ultimate landscape for an eco house. With strong winds, and extreme earth temperatures at sourcable depths, the Pinwheel house thrives on the natural energies surrounding its structure. Containging a green roof, and wind turbines, and low impact materials, many found in Utah itself, we were able to to create the Pinwheel house with a low energy footprint.

The Sage Brush Basin is home to the revitalization of Native Americain bison. In order to focus on the harmony between the salt lake and the native vegetation, a geothermal system will be installed. This system can take advantage of the natural water temperature for passive heating, as well as, a green roof system to harvest waste water and to allow extra grazing for bison. The roof structure was designed to harness the constantly changing winds along the salt lake for passive cooling and to maximize natural lighting, while maintaining a consistent temperature. A

THIS QUEEN ANN VICTORIAN is situated in the historic avenues of Salt Lake City, Utah. Having been through many minor alterations through the decades, it was time for a true overhaul. Purchased by the Bradley’s, who relocated from Los Angeles, they were ready to make this their new home. So the film industry guru, and industrial designer gave this home just what it needed to stand out while still allowing for the natural elements of this Queen Ann to show through. New and old materials such as lucite wall partitions, and vintage film reels, create the perfect juxtaposition in this new family home.

HEALTHY EATING HAS TRANSITIONED from a desire to a demand for many people in our contemporary society: there by making raw food a viable and profitable option. The Raw food movement has become a passionate trend all around the country and often fuses many cuisines together creating an elaborate, and unique menu for many to enjoy. This movement is often strictly a vegan, or vegetarian diet, but many incorporate meat, fish, and dairy products. To serve all palettes, this menu was constructed with raw and cooked menu options. ‘Cru’ is the french translation for ‘raw’. The concept for this space was derived from a pattern found in nature called the Delaunay triangulation. With this pattern, smooth, organic curves were created to make the repeated pattern throughout the space. The shapes are meticulously placed to create a rich, inlaid floor and are also seen as light displays on the masonry walls. The use of organic shapes, and materials for this space envelopes the unique cuisine into a custom design aesthetic.

This studio focused on furniture, new and old, modern furniture fabrication methods, and marketing new designs to a world market. For one project, students were asked to design a chair within certain guidelines- the main material would be nine, 49x97- 1/4 MDF panels. From that, the GEODE chair began to take form, using slat design, and simple bolt connections, totalling 27 slats with intricuit patterns resembling the crystaline structures of geodes.
