Alternative village on U of M campus is basically a testing facility for new energy saving building materials and techniques. A few of the things they study are alternative forms of insulation in buildings. The main building they use is made of straw bales. They also have a number of test buildings where they test thermal and moisture performance. There are also various forms of alternative heating devices, such as the tube solar water heating panels. A greenhouse has also been built on the site to find ways of energy and cost saving ways of living.
