LOCATION NORTH CORKTOWN IS LOCATED IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, JUST NORTH OF CORKTOWN AND ITS FAMOUS MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION. ALTHOUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S SURROUNDING AREAS ARE IN THE MIDST OF A REVITALIZATION PROCESS, NORTH CORKTOWN STILL STANDS AS A POVERTY STICKEN NEIGHBORHOOD WITH VAST AMOUNTS OF OPEN, UNUSED LAND. THIS NEIGHBORHOOD HAS TONS OF POTENTIAL TO BE A LIVELY, SELF-SUSTAINING, MIXED-USE AND MIXEDINCOME COMMUNITY. WITH THE FUTURE INFLUX OF BOTH TOURISTS AND EMPLOYEES FOR FORD’S FUTURE TECH HUB AT MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION, NORTH CORKTOWN IS A GREAT SITE TO BE STRATEGICALLY PLANNED AND BUILT UP TO BECOME A LONG TERM HOME FOR PEOPLE AS WELL AS A LIVELY, MESMERIZING NEIGHBORHOOD FOR THE SHORT TERM VISITOR. ITS LOCATION ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND MICHIGAN AVENUE CORRIDORS ALLOW THE SITE TO FIT IN SEAMLESSLY WITH OTHER POPULAR DESTINATIONS. ALTHOUGH MY SITE IS NORTH CORKTOWN IN ITS ENTIRETY, I CHOSE TO FOCUS ON A SMALLER SUBSECTION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHICH LIES DIRECTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE IN ORDER TO DELVE DEEPER INTO MY RESEARCH AND DESIGN.

MY UNDERGRADUATE THESIS FOCUSES ON REESTABLISHING COMMUNITY IN DETROIT’S NORTH CORKTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD AS A RESPONSE TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY’S NEW MASTERPLAN FOR MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION. THE MAIN GOALS THAT I STRIVED TO ACCOMPLISH WERE TO TURN THE NEIGHBORHOOD INTO A VIABLE AND LIVELY ONE, TO CREATE A PLACE THAT DOES NOT UPROOT EXISTING RESIDENTS BUT ALSO WELCOMES AND SERVES THE FUTURE INFLUX OF PEOPLE TO THE AREA, AND TO BRING LIFE BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY WHILE USING AND ELABORATING ON REMNANTS OF EXISTING CULTURE. MY THESIS PROPSAL SPEAKS TO KEEPING EXISTING THREADS OF CULTURE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY WHILE ADDING NEWER STRUCTURES AND LANDSCAPES TO HELP ACCOMMODATE LARGER GROUPS OF PEOPLE. AFTER CONDUCTING MUCH RESEARCH AND A PHYSICAL VISIT TO THE SITE, I DECIDED TO KEEP CERTAIN EXISTING BUILDINGS WITHIN MY MASTERPLAN. THESE INCLUDE INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES SUCH AS CHURCHES AND A PUBLIC SCHOOL WITH A PARK, BUILDINGS THAT SPEAK TO THE CHARACTER OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD, SUCH AS ARTIST RESIDENCES, A HOSTEL, AND OTHER BUILDINGS THAT DISPLAY PUBLIC ART, AND ACTUAL RESIDENCES THAT ARE OCCUPIED OR ARE IN A WELL ENOUGH CONDITION TO ALLOW FOR A SUITABLE LIVING ENVIRONMENT. ASIDE FROM THE EXISTING STRUCTURES, MY PROPOSAL ALSO INCLUDES A “KIT OF PARTS” THAT ALLOWS FOR VARIATION TO MAKE EACH SPACE UNIQUE WHILE STILL PROVIDING A SENSE OF ORDER. THIS KIT OF PARTS INCLUDES DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESIDENTIAL UNITS: APARTMENT, SINGLE FAMILY HOUSING, AND LIVE/WORK, EACH OF WHICH HAS MORE SUB-UNITS DESIGNATED FOR DIFFERING PROGRAMS. PAIRED WITH EACH TYPOLOGY IS A SET OF LANDSCAPING ELEMENTS THAT WORK TO BENEFIT EACH SPECIFIC UNIT.
INTERACTIVE KIT OF PARTS MODEL
HOUSING TYPOLOGIES A MAIN PART OF THIS PROJECT REVOLVES AROUND HOUSING TYPOLOGIES, WITH THE LIVE/WORK UNIT BEING THE MOST EXEMPLARY. THIS UNIT CULTIVATES THE IDEA OF A SELF-SUSTAINING COMMUNITY AND ALLOWS FOR SMALL, PERSONAL BUSINESSES TO FLOURISH. NORTH CORKTOWN AND ITS SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS HAVE A LARGE PORTION OF RESIDENTS WHO HAVE THEIR OWN TRADES OR MAKE THEIR OWN GOODS AND THE LIVE/WORK HOUSING PROVIDES A WAY TO KEEP THAT PART OF NORTH CORKTOWN’S UNIQUE CULTURE. THE COMPLETE HOUSING TYPOLOGY SET CONSISTS OF APARTMENT COMPLEXES, TWO TYPES OF SINGLE FAMILY HOMES WITH THE AVERAGE SINGLE FAMILY HOME AND THREE TYPES OF ALLEY FLATS, AND SIX TYPES OF LIVE/WORK UNITS. THEN, BREAKING IT DOWN FURTHER, LIVE/WORK UNIT TYPOLOGIES INCLUDE RESTAURANT, PERFORMANCE, DAYCARE, INDEPENDENT ARTIST, MAKERSPACE, AND FOOD TRUCK MODULES. EACH UNIT HAS SIMILAR ELEMENTS INCLUDING BEING VARIATIONS ON A BASIC “L” SHAPE, HAVING A PITCHED ROOF, AND HAVING OUTDOOR COURTYARD SPACE, AMONG OTHERS. THESE ALL SERVE AS PROTOTYPES THAT WILL THEN FUEL THE REVITALIZATION PROCESS FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD. ADDITIONALLY, EACH HOUSING TYPOLOGY IS PAIRED WITH A KIT OF PARTS THAT SETS UP A BASIS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD REJUVENATION BUT STILL ALLOWS FOR VARIATION BETWEEN UNITS. DEPENDING ON THE TYPOLOGY, UNITS HAVE A CHOICE OF LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS TO FURTHER PERSONALIZE THEIR SPACE. THESE INCLUDE TREES, ORCHARDS, FLOWER PLOTS, CROPS, PONDS, HARDSCAPE, HILLS, AND OUTBUILDINGS.

PROJECT MODEL
THIS NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING PROJECT WAS BASED IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA ALONG WEST MAIN STREET. IT WAS THE PRODUCT OF A SECOND YEAR FOUNDATION STUDIO FOCUSED ON EXPOSING STUDENTS TO RESIDENTIAL DESIGN AND ISSUES INVOLVING HOUSING CRISES IN GROWING CITIES. IN THE GROUP PORTION OF THE PROJECT, THE OVERALL SITE WAS SPLIT INTO FIVE SMALLER SUB-SITES. EACH GROUP MEMEBER WORKED COLLABORATIVELY ON THE LARGER SITE SCALE WHILE CREATING OUR OWN UNIQUE HOUSING DESIGNS FOR THE SUB-SITES. MY INDIVIDUAL PROJECT IS OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX COMPRISED OF THREE TYPES OF UNITS: SINGLE MODULAR, DOUBLE MODULAR, AND NON-MODULAR, ALONG WITH A RENTABLE COMMERCIAL UNIT ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE GROUND FLOOR. THEIR CONFIGURATION ALLOWS FOR SYSTEMS OF TERRACING AND WALKWAYS THAT BRING NATURE UP INTO THE COMPLEX AS WELL AS OPTIMAL LIGHT AND VIEWS OUT TO THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS. MY DESIGN, ONE OF A MORE INTIMATE SCALE THAT FOCUSES ON AN ADDITIVE PROCESS THROUGH AGGREGATION INSTEAD OF SUBTRACTING FROM A LARGER MASS, ACTS AS A FOIL TO THE OTHER EXISTING BUILDINGS AND GROUP MEMBER PROJECTS ALONG WEST MAIN STREET. ITS LOCATION FURTHER BACK FROM THE STREET EDGE ALLOWS FOR GREENSPACE OR HARDSCAPE THAT GIVES A SENSE OF INTRIGUE AND INVITES PEOPLE IN.

A THIRD YEAR FOUNDATION STUDIO AIMED AT PUSHING THE LIMITS OF DESIGN BY PUTTING A STRONG EMPHASIS ON CREATING THROUGH SECTION. THIS PROJECT IS AN EXPERIMENTAL ARTS HUB LOCATED IN NEW YORK CITY’S MEAT PACKING DISTRICT, OCCUPYING A SITE ADJACENT TO THE HIGH LINE. AT TEN STORIES TALL, THE PROGRAM WITHIN THE HUB IS EXTREMELY DIVERSE AND IS ONE OF THE MAIN DRIVING FACTORS FOR MY PROJECT. FABRICATION, GREENSPACE, PERFORMANCE, PRODUCTION, RESIDENTIAL, RETAIL/FOOD, AND STUDIO SPACES ARE PLACED THROUGHOUT THE STRUCTURE AND ACTIVELY ENGAGE ITS OCCUPANTS. WORKING PRIMARILY IN SECTION HAS ALLOWED MY DESIGN TO BE BEAUTIFULLY COMPLEX WITH MOMENTS THAT MESH THE INTERIOR WITH THE EXTERIOR THROUGHOUT. THE GREENSPACE TAKES ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN AND GROWS THROUGH THE HUB CONNECTING ALL EDGES TO A CENTRAL NODE. THE DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF THE GREENSPACE WORK HARMONIOUSLY WITH OTHER PROGRAMMATIC SPACES ALLOWING FOR SHIFTING PLANES, MULTI-HEIGHT AREAS, BRIDGES, AND VARYING DEGREES OF TRANSPARENCY WITH GLASS, METAL SCREENS, AND CONCRETE FACADES.

THE CANYON WAS A FINAL GROUP PROJECT FOR A THIRD YEAR FOUNDATION STUDIO. WE HAD FOUR WEEKS TO DEVELOP A DESIGN FOR A STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER LOCATED ON BRANDON AVENUE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA. MY GROUP MEMBER AND I FOCUSED ON INCORPORATING BOTH CONCEPTUAL AND LITERAL CONNECTIONS TO NATURE IN ORDER TO BETTER PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF ITS OCCUPANTS. OUR DESIGN’S NAME STEMS FROM ITS ALLUSION TO A LITERAL CANYON. THE TWO MASSES, ONE WITH A PROGAM PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON HEALTH AND THE OTHER WITH A PROGRAM PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON WELLNESS, HAVE A PATH CARVED THROUGH THEM THAT BRINGS PEOPLE IN FROM THE STREET, THROUGH THE COMPLEX, AND OUT TO A POND. ITS MATERIALITY IS STONE AND WOOD WITH LARGE GLASS WINDOWS TO ALLOW FOR LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT. THE GLASS ROOF STRUCTURE COVERING THE CARVED OUT PATH ALLOWS FOR FOLIAGE TO GROW INSIDE THE COMPLEX WHILE STILL OFFERING PROTECTION FROM HARSHER WEATHER. FURTHERMORE, PHYSICAL HEALTH RELATED FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS A GYM, ARE LOCATED ON THE GROUND FLOOR WHICH GIVES THE SPACE THE ABILITY TO OPEN UP ONTO A LARGE TERRACE AREA LOOKING OVER THE POND. MENTAL HEALTH RELATED PROGRAMS ARE IN THE SOUTH BUILDING AND MAINLY ON THE UPPER FLOORS. THESE SPACES HAVE LARGE GLASS WALLS TO PROVIDE NATURAL LIGHT AND VIEWS OUT TO THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS AND UTILIZE WELLNESS TOOLS SUCH AS THE “PROSPECT/REFUGE” AND “ATTENTION RESTORATION” THEORIES, AMONG OTHERS. MY GROUP MEMBER AND I TRULY WORKED ON THIS PROJECT EQUALLY IN EVERY ASPECT. WE BOTH CONTRIBUTED TO THE OVERALL DESIGN OF THE PROJECT, DRAWINGS, RENDERS, DIAGRAMS, AND EVERY OTHER OBJECT PRODUCED.

CREATED IN FOUR WEEKS, THIS PROJECT WAS ALL ABOUT PUSHING BOUNDARIES: PHYSICALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY PUSHING BOUNDARIES THROUGH MATERIALITY AND TESTING OUR SKILLS AT THAT POINT IN TIME AS WELL AS THEORETICALLY PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF DESIGN BY EXPLORING HOW TO TURN A STATIC CONCEPT, SUCH AS WHAT A WALL IS, INTO A DYNAMIC REALITY. THIS TEN FOOT LONG AND EIGHT FOOT TALL STRUCTURE IS MADE OUT OF LASER CUT MASONITE PANELS, A CNC ROUTED WOODEN FRAME, AND HAND CUT FOAM CORE TO ACCENTUATE OPENINGS WITHIN THE STRUCTURE. THE LASER CUT PATTERN CARVED INTO EACH MASONITE PANEL IS ONE THAT ALLOWS FLEXIBILITY WITHIN NORMALLY RIGID MATERIALS AND PROVIDES INTERESTING INTERACTIONS WITH LIGHT WHEN PAIRED WITH THE ACCENTED OPENINGS. IN ADDITION TO THE WALL, EACH GROUP MEMBER MADE A SMALLER, PERSONAL ABSTRACT MODEL THAT ATTACHES TO AND ACTS AS AN EXTENSION OF THE STRUCTURE. MY PERSONAL MODEL SPEAKS TO OUR DESIGN PROCESS AND PROPERTIES OF THE MASONITE: A SEEMINGLY TOUGH, RIGID, AND PLANAR OBJECT BUT WHEN CARVED AWAY AT AND MANIPULATED, NEW DYNAMIC OPPORTUNITIES REVEAL THEMSELVES. OF THE 12 PERSON CLASS SECTION, THERE WERE THREE GROUPS OF 4 MEMBERS THAT EACH CREATED THEIR OWN WALL DESIGN. I WAS A MEMBER OF THE WINNING DESIGN GROUP, CONTRIBUTING TO THE DESIGN CONCEPT AND STUDY MODELS. DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE, I PLAYED A CRUCIAL ROLE IN CONSTRUCTING AND ASSEMBLING THE MASONITE PANELS AND FOAM CORE OPENINGS.

P.OD. - PI OMEGA DELTA WAS THE FINAL GROUP PROJECT FOR A FIRST YEAR FOUNDATION STUDIO FOCUSED ON INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN AND DESIGN/BUILD. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO CREATE AN OCCUPIABLE STRUCTURE COMPLETELY OUT OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS IN A TIME SPAN OF FOUR WEEKS. MY TWO OTHER GROUP MEMBERS AND I CHOSE TO CREATE OUR STRUCTURE WITH A SINGULAR MODULAR UNIT MADE SOLELY OF NON-CORRUGATED CARDBOARD. THESE TRIANGULAR UNITS CONNECT IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY CREATE AN INTERCONNECTED WEB THAT ACTS A LARGE, SINGULAR MASS. EACH UNIT HAS A SERIES OF STRATEGICALLY PLACED SLITS THAT ALLOW FOR BOTH MASS PRODUCATION AND AGGREGATION IN ALL DIRECTIONS. THE STRUCTURE CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF STAR-SHAPED COLUMNS FOR STABILITY CONNECTED BY STRETCHES OF ONE UNIT THICK INTERCONNECTED MODULES FOR FLEXIBILITY. ADDITIONALLY, OUR PROJECT IS A NOD TO UNIVERSITY STUDENT LIFE. THE NONCORRUGATED CARDBOARD WAS COLLECTED AROUND THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA’S GROUNDS, SPECIFICALLY NEAR STUDENT HOUSING, BARS, AND FRATERNITIES, HENCE THE NAME “PI OMEGA DELTA” WHICH REFERENCES GREEK LIFE. PRODUCTS CONSUMED DAILY BY STUDENTS ARE BLATANTLY DISPLAYED IN OUR STRUCTURE AND BRING AWARENESS TO POLLUTION ISSUES CAUSED BY STUDENTS. I DESIGNED THE TRIANGULAR MODULE AND ITS COMPLEX SYSTEM OF SLITS, ASSEMBLED THE MAJORITY OF THE STRUCTURE BY HAND, AND HELPED OUT WITH MATERIAL COLLECTION. WHILE I WORKED ON CONSTRUCTION, MY GROUP MEMBERS WORKED TO COLLECT THE CARDBOARD, PREPARE THE PIECES, EXECUTE THE LASER CUTTING, AND CREATE DRAWINGS AND DIAGRAMS.

MY ROLE IN THIS PROJECT INVOLVED CONSTRUCTING THE PHYSICAL MODEL AND CREATING THE 2D DRAWINGS WITH TWO OTHER GROUP MEMBERS, ALL WHILE HELPING OUT THE OTHER TWO GROUP MEMBERS WITH GRASSHOPPER AND KARAMBA 3D SCRIPTS WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
THIS WAS A FINAL GROUP PROJECT FOR AN ELECTIVE COURSE DURING MY THIRD YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA. FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE SEMESTER WE WERE EXPOSED TO TOOLS SUCH AS THE PLUG-INS FOR RHINOCEROUS 5, GRASSHOPPER AND KARAMBA 3D FOR THE FIRST TIME. BY THE END OF THE SEMESTER WE WERE GIVEN A PROJECT BRIEF TO USE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THOSE PROGRAMS TO DEVELOP A PROJECT THAT EXPLORED STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN. MY GROUP MEMBERS AND I CREATED A DOUBLE CRESTED SPACE FRAME THAT, IF BUILT WITH STEEL, ALLOWS FOR AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN FOR FREE MOBILITY AND FLUID PROGRAM. WE DESIGNED IT BY FORMING A GRASSHOPPER SCRIPT AND USING KARAMBA 3D TO ANALYZE, TEST, AND CONTINUOUSLY MONITER ITS STRUCTURAL STABILITY. TWO TYPES OF JOINT MODULES WERE USED IN THE SPACE FRAME, ONE WITH A LARGER CROSS SECTION AND ONE WITH A SMALLER CROSS SECTION, DEPENDING ON WHERE MORE STABILITY IN THE STRUCTURE WAS REQUIRED.

THIS WAS A GRADUATE LEVEL ELECTIVE COURSE WITH A MULTITUDE OF EXERCISES GEARED TOWARDS ENHANCING DRAWING SKILLS. GOALS WERE TO EMPHASIZE DRAWING FROM DIRECT OBSERVATIONS, EXPLORE NEGATIVE SPACE AND POSITIVE SHAPE RELATIONSHIPS, AND TO FIND ACCURACY THROUGH EXPRESSION. ALTHOUGH OTHER OBJECTS WERE STUDIED, HUMAN FORM AND LANDSCAPE WERE THE TWO MAIN SUBJECTS OF FOCUS FOR THE COURSE. IN THESE ARTISTIC STUDIES I HAVE EXPLORED TWO DIFFERENT OBJECTS LONG-TERM: THE HUMAN HAND AND FLOWERS, WHICH CONSIST MAINLY OF ROSES. I CHOSE THESE SUBJECTS EARLY ON IN MY ARTISTIC CAREER BECAUSE OF THEIR MANY LAYERS OF COMPLEXITY WHICH YIELD ENDLESS INTERPRETATIONS. EACH WORK WAS CREATED THROUGH DIFFERENT DRAWING TECHNIQUES WITH EACH ITERATION FOCUSING ON A DIFFERENT ARTISTIC CONCEPT SUCH AS FORM, COLOR, LIGHT, OR EXPRESSION, AMONG OTHERS. USE OF MULTIPLE MEDIUMS INCLUDING GRAPHITE, PAN PASTEL, WATERCOLOR, ETC., HAVE ALLOWED ME TO CAPTURE THE DIFFERING PROMINENT EXPRESSIONS THAT EACH OBJECTS EXUDES.
