WELCOME Today’s creative media sector offers some of the most challenging, yet satisfying, areas in which to work for new and emerging talent. Competition for work in the sector is tight and employers will select only the very best.

Creative Loop, a partnership of six Scottish colleges, works to develop talent for Scotland’s creative media industries and aims to ensure that students are fully equipped with the skills and flair required by this constantly evolving and competitive sector. The two-day Creative Loop Student Media Festival will provide a platform for emerging talent in Film and Television, Radio and Digital Media to network with industry professionals, showcase their work and pitch their ideas to media commissioners for instant feedback. This festival will feature a variety of workshops and master classes across the different platforms led by leading industry figures. We are delighted to conclude the event with the Creative Scotland Student Media Awards, celebrating the best of Scotland’s emerging talent with categories in Film and Television, Radio, and Digital Media.

10.15 -11.15 The Social Network: There was a time when listeners sent letters to radio presenters and had them read out. Now it’s a constant stream of tweets and Facebook updates. But is the new way effective? Do the constant updates engage us or turn us off? Presenter - Colin Kelly Mark Martin (Forth Radio), Theresa Talbot (BBC Radio Scotland) , Richard Pacey (Radio Forth)
11.30 - 12.30 Sound Women: Tune up and down the dial and see if you can find a female presenter who leads off at breakfast. Even the speech stations ‘balance women with men. Then the big bosses - they’re usually guys. Why? Does it even matter? And should guys be ashamed or afraid? 10.15 - 11.15 SETTING THE SCENE ON ANIMATION: Fraser MacLean’s talk will be based on “Setting The Scene”, recently published by Chronicle Books, which charts the history and development of the art and techniques of Animation Layout. From the initial proposal in 2007, “Setting The Scene” took nearly 4 years to research, write and publish. Fraser graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1983 with a degree in Graphic Design and went on to work as a trainee Animator in the London Special Effects Department on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1987 and was later hired to work for the Warner Bros. and Disney feature animation studios in Los Angeles on “Space Jam” and “Tazran” respectively. Since 2000 Fraser has taught on many degree-level animation and design courses, in colleges and universities from Dundee and London to Salzburg and Beirut. Fraser MacLean, Animator

14.35 - 15.30 I didn’t get where I am today... Getting your first big break in radio is a difficult thing, and no two presenters have done it the same way. Three presenters with experience across Scotland (and in some cases around the world) share their tales and warnings. 11.30 - 12.30 WORKING WITH RADIO ONE: Mark Sharman is a fully paid up member of the radio legends brigade. He’s a double Sony gold Winning producer who has worked for the BBC and the independent sector in radio, TV and Online. Mark will be sharing his experiences of working across various media and explaining how they are all slowly beginning to merge. Focusing on his most recent experiences with BBC Radio 1, he’ll be talking about their expectations, what he has to do every week, Radio 1’s online ambitions and the challenges they face in the future. 15.30 - 16.00 Jeff Zycinski in conversation with Richard Melvin Jeff has been the Head of BBC Radio Scotland in a fascinating time. He has overseen it’s move into a series of state of the art digital studios at sites across Scotland. He has brought comedy back to the network, invented ‘The Zones’ and is emberking on a series of schedule changes which have kept the papers busy. But he’s also a radio lover who is passionate about the medium and a real supporter of Scotland’s new & emerging talent. He talks to the Director of Dabster Productions, Richard Melvin.

13.30 - 14.30 SCOOP SCAM AND JOURNALISM Dundee born Martel Maxwell talks about how she got started in her career as a News International showbiz journalist, working in London on the world famous Bizzarre column and ultimately becoming the showbiz editor of The Scottish Sun. She’s presented radio shows on BBC Radio Scotland, Talk 107 and Sun Talk and appears weekly on Lorraine on ITV1 as the resident showbiz expert and with Eamon Holmes on Sky News. In this practical session, experienced lighting cameraman and tutor Ray Tallan will look at techniques on how to improve the overall look of the visual image when shooting on the run with limited kit. The aim of this workshop is to help you think more creatively about the frame you are shooting, transforming images from the average to the artistic, and to improve your preproduction decision making when choosing your kit. Niall Clark, Senior Script Editor at the Comedy Unit (producers of Limmy’s Show, Burnistoun, Gary; Tank Commnader and Still Game) discusses the process of developing comedy ideas into broadcast commissions, and how the Comedy Unit has developed talent who have become household names on the Scottish scene. 14.00 - 16.30 PERFRECT PITCH: BROADCAST COMMISSIONING IN SCOTLAND A not to be missed opportunity to meet with the movers and shakers of the broadcasting scene in Scotland. A panel of leading industry figures will deliver a session on developing, pitching and commissioning broadcast programme ideas in Scotland. They will discuss the process of getting ideas from concept to commission. Students will then have the chance to pitch ideas live to the panel, get feedback on their proposals and a fantastic opportunity to get their ideas selected for development. Winner of the Best Pitch will be announced at the Creative Scotland Student Media Awards

10.15 - 11.45 PITCH YOUR IDEA FOR DEVELOPMENTThis panel will discuss how to develop ideas for radio and online including podcasts and short films for broadcasters. Students in the audience will be given an opportunity to pitch some of their ideas to the panel for instant feedback and be offered the chance to get their ideas selected for development. Last year, the winning entry was commissioned by BBC Scotland online Richard Melvin is the director of Dabster Productions and has made podcasts that have been downloaded by over 5 million people, some of which have gone on to become major series on the BBC. Tom Hodgkinson is a commissioner and senior producer for BBC online. He’s at the front line of developing the future of the BBC’s Internet aspirations. Jacqueline Sinclair is the Development Producer for So Television Scotland and has recently worked on The Sarah Millican Television Programme for BBC 2. She’s also been involved in many major Scottish television comedy programmes including Gary Tank Commander and The Limmy Show. Radio comedy is one of the real proving grounds for new talent. Writers, performers and entire programmes started out in radio long before the guys with cameras came calling. Three radio professionals with a passion for laughs tell their stories. Their coats are held by a comedian who knows a bit about broadcasting, too. They won’t pull the wool over her eyes... Chunk Games Designer, Alan Jack, will talk about his experience of starting at Chunk on a live project, seeing it through to completion and how his expectations matched up.At Chunk, Alan is responsible for designing the actual play mechanics of games, and building content for the game. He has worked on projects for clients ranging from Walls to Channel 4.

Both became hit Hollywood movies - Wanted starred Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, and Kick-Ass stars actor Nicolas Cage. He has finished writing it’s hotly anticipated sequel, Kick Ass 2 due to begin shooting this summer. Mark is also responsible for revamping the X-Men, launched the number one Spider-Man title, and is the writer of the US industry’s biggestselling comic book of the past decade, Marvel’s Civil War. He also launched his own comic magazine - CLiNT, which features contributions from Jonathan Ross and Frankie Boyle. 10.15 - 11.15 From Sketch to Screen Burnistoun is one of the most successful comedy shows to come out of Scotland in recent years - with filming on a third series just completed, and the transition to network - BBC2 - achieved last year. Alongside his comedy partner Iain Connell, Robert Florence has previously written sitcoms Empty and Legit - as well as creating characters for Chewing the Fat and the Karen Dunbar Show. In this session Robert talks about the process of creating the world of Burnistoun, and how they made a success of the notoriously difficult to crack sketch comedy genre.
