30 years in the making
I
n this brochure we celebrate the wide range of industry professionals whose careers have been developed within the NETS programme over its 30-year history and highlight the huge variety of productions they have worked on. We also pay tribute to the passion and commitment of the many industry professionals, who have helped build, maintain and develop a programme that, even with the many changes in the industry over three decades, has remained relevant to the industry’s needs. The story of the New Entrants Training Programme is one that both tracks the individual successes of the programme’s graduates, and tracks the evolution and success of Scotland’s screen industries. So how did it all begin? In 1978 there were around 60 freelancers working in Scotland’s film and television production sector, but at a time of great expansion in the industry, there were no formal means of training
would-be recruits. Seeing the obvious gaps in training and needing qualified crew, the independent sector approached the Scottish Film Council (one of Scottish Screen’s predecessor bodies), and the Film Technician Training Scheme was established. It was the first of its kind in the UK and one which, because of its tremendous success in providing on-the-job training, has inspired similar models both here and abroad. And so it was that in 1979 the first graduates from the programme joined the industry – expanding the pool of welltrained freelance talent for film and television production. In 1982, the Scottish Film Training Trust was established as a separate body due to the training needs of the rapidly expanding industry, and to build on the success of NETS. The Scottish Film Training Trust continued for the next 10 years, and in 1993 NETS became part of Scottish Broadcast & Film Training.
In 1997 Scottish Broadcast & Film Training was one of the four bodies brought together to form Scottish Screen, creating a single, integrated screen agency supporting the development of all aspects of Scotland’s screen industry and culture, including talent and skills. And this is where we are today. It is estimated that we now have close to 2000 professional freelancers working across Scotland’s screen industries and 80 indigenous companies developing and creating films, television and digital content for global audiences. NETS graduates and current trainees have made a huge contribution to the industry. Many are now heads of companies, heads of departments, as well as established technicians and crafts people. Our recent graduates and new trainees are forging ahead in their careers and will become the industry heavyweights of tomorrow. From supplying the solid technical lifeblood of film and television production activity week in week out throughout Scotland, NETS
The Hoist 1988) on trainee film Kay Sheridan (1987-
graduates have also developed their careers across the world, gaining a reputation for quality and excellence. Scotland boasts a strong, talented freelance workforce of technicians, crafts people, designers, production personnel and creative talent, who have chosen to base themselves in Scotland while working nationally and internationally. The screen industries are a rapidly changing sector and NETS has constantly evolved and adapted to the changes in technology and production techniques. Currently it is a flexible mix of industry attachments, tailored short courses and mentoring, moulded to each person’s skills needs and the anticipated requirements of the industry. NETS is designed and continuously adapted to ensure trainees gain professional experience and are ‘work ready’ on completion of their training.
It is the longest running structured training programme for the UK’s screen industries. So, 22 courses and 119 trained freelance professionals later, we are looking forward to the future, as part of Creative Scotland. Scotland’s film and television production sector no longer sits at the edge of the country’s creative industries, but is now an integral and core element. The pace of change across the creative industries, particularly the impact of digital technologies, is creating huge opportunities and Creative Scotland is being established to seize those opportunities. NETS will continue to evolve to reflect the needs of that changing world, producing graduates who will underpin Scotland’s future creative success. This brochure celebrates the achievements of NETS graduates from the last 30 years – who they are, what they’ve done and continue to do – and of all the
professionals based in Scotland who have trained and mentored our trainees towards their successful careers. As one of the trainees put it: “As a NETS trainee you are accepted right away as part of the fabric of the industry. That is a testament to the success of the programme and the calibre of all the people that have gone through it. Everybody I met knew about the scheme. There was an expectation that you would be good. It was a responsibility but also a huge privilege.” – Kieran Hannigan, Production Trainee (2006-2007) Kay Sheridan, NETS Manager
