LETTER SPACE & MEANING
R PA T 1
The purpose of this assignment is to express the meaning of a word or an idea through the spacing, sizing, and placement of letters on the page. I chose the words “space” and “crowded” for this project. I chose these words because in one definition they are opposites, but they can also be interpreted in very different ways. When displaying the word space I wanted to consider space in the universe as well as space regarding location. For crowded, I immediately thought of large crowds and being within close proximity of something or someone. I wanted to create simple and clean compositions for space. On the other hand, I wanted the crowded compositions to be overwhelming and give off a sense of anxiety (because that is how I feel when I am in a crowded place).

DUALITIES // DICHOTOMIES

For this assignment, we were to continue with the same words that we used in part 1, however we were also given an opposite word for each. Our task was to convey the meaning of the pairings by placing the two words within one square. We gave each word a sense of meaning through the spacing and arrangement of letters. I applied a strong contrast to emphasize the opposite definitions. I had to consider how the two opposite words relate to one another within each composition. Rather than creating to separate depictions of each word, I had to give them a relationship with one another. Since I had chosen “crowded” in the previous assignment, I was given the opposite - “spacious”. Likewise, the opposite of “space” was “time”. My compositions for “crowded” and “spacious” were simpler and easier to create because they were shown as size and space taken up on the page. On the other hand, “space” and “time” were more difficult. It was difficult for me to comprehend how I can show a relationship between the two words that are evidently present in our universe.

VISUAL SEMANTICS The purpose of this assignment was to explore the use of letterforms and typography in the particular style of a chosen artist.

I started the assignment excited to create a composition inspired by one of my favorite artists, however, I underestimated how difficult it would be. When creating a list of the certain aspects that were unique to Lichtenstein, I also created a list of a few of my favorite works. These lists helped me brainstorm the elements I wanted to include in my assignment. I knew I wanted to include bold outlines, bright primary colors, and ben day dots. I was inspired by big blocky letters and the idea of an explosion.

These images are works created by Lichtenstein. I created my text, color pallette, and textures based on these images and the style of his work.

I originally had planned to create his name using big, block letters, and filling in each letter with a different style of his work. For example, the L would be filled with dots, the T filled with words like “whaam!” and “pop!”, and the S filled with stripes and lines.

From that idea, I transitioned into creating a composition that resembled an explosion. I wanted to show Lichtenstein’s name popping out of the page, with his particular style elements encapsulating the background. I tried multiple sketches and computer designed approaches before I reached my final product.

Throughout the process of creating my composition, I tried multiple different iterations of colors and shapes. I tried different fonts and distortions of text. I played around with my composition in Illustrator to see what positioning I liked until I ended with my final layout. I am happy with my final product, I believe I showed Lichtenstein’s style of work without copying. I made his work my own and I really enjoyed this assignment.
My next great idea was to literally make my assignment 3D. I wanted to separate each element and collage them on top of each other to show depth and dimension. I was planning on painting the solid shapes and printing the name and shapes with the dots, then layering each element on top of eachother with a layer of foam or cardboard in between to get an explosion effect. However, due to time restrictions I was unable to complete this idea.

HIERARCHY & GRID The purpose of this assignment was to be given text and create a series of typographic compositions in a grid form.
R PA T 1
I started the assignment creating multiple different grid layouts and different iterations of the same text. First I made sketches with boxes to show where different sections of text could go. Next, I used InDesign to make black and white compositions to see how the text layouts looked. From there, I was able to play around with different compositions, styles, and font styles. I found it a lot easier to create compositions on InDesign rather than sketching because it was more simple to move things around and make smaller changes quicker. When sketching, I was unable to actually imagine how the composition would appear electronically.

After sketching, I moved onto the computer. I found it way easier to envision a composition by laying out the text boxes on InDesign, rather than sketching. My sketches did not feel like a good interpretation of how I wanted my layout to appear because I could not write in the correct font or get all my spacing how I wanted it.

Once I brought my designs to the computer, I had a clear layout and overall cohesive composition. I was able to play around with the text more than I could while sketching.

After making quite a few black and white compositions, I decided it was time to add color. I searched through Pinterest to find some color palette inspiration and landed on colorful pastel hues that resembled the buildings found in Sicily. I also wanted to explore the Italian flag colors, but thought it might be too literal.

Breaking the Grid. I cut up my previous printed work and made a collage, portraying all of the information necessary but in a unique way.

FINAL DESIGN Once I began using colors I started to see my compositions coming together. I stuck to the Sicily colored buildings for my color pallette the most, but still created a few compositions with the Italian flag colors. This is the first final composition that I created. It was inspired by the vibrant colors of Sicily with a grid design.

FINAL DESIGN This composition was inspired by a recipe book. I wanted the boxes on the top and bottom to appear as tabs of a book someone was looking through the book. Throughout the process I created more compositions than necessary and I found it to be easier to have more than not enough. I was able to combine ideas and create compositions that had multiple iterations morphed into one.

FINAL DESIGN I created this composition with the same color pallette, but decided to offset the boxes to resemble the style of buildings in Sicily.

FINAL DESIGN After making a few different iterations with the Italian flag colors, this is the one I felt was most successful. The “Cooking with the Sicilians� is meant to appear in a similar way as the Italian flag itself.

MAKING & BREAKING THE GRID

The purpose of this assignment was to create a one page calendar that could either be functional using grids and a particular layout or dysfunctional and creative using a more unorthodox approach. I started this assignment very excited to create a calendar, but I was thinking too deep, rather then starting broad. I couldn’t think of an idea I was content enough with to further progress. I struggled creating a mind map. After coming to class and talking to my fellow classmates and my professor, I felt more comfortable starting completely fresh and in result I came up with 3 different ideas I was very excited to move forward with.

I created a mindmap from the word “joy”. I built off joy and ended up on the words “tranquil”, “quiet”, “nostalgic”, “electric”, and “flow”.
“tranquil” “quiet” I believe a book / library theme perfectly encapsulates those words. However, when finalizing my ideas into 2 compositions, I decided to not continue with this exploration.

This sparked a correlation with my artist presentation (Alvin Lustig). I wanted to explore a composition related to his designs and color pallete. I wanted to use abstract shapes that appeared to flow throughout the page palette similar colors that had a range of variations. I brainstormed different decades before deciding on the 90s for my calendar theme. I wanted to use bright colors and geometric shapes.

TYPE SPECIMEN MAILER The purpose of this assignment is to create a mailer that will advertise a specific typeface, it will only contain text in that particular font. There will also be a poster on the back that is a representation of the typeface in use.
After going to the Letterform Archive and seeing real type specimens, I was enthusiastic and excited to create a type specimen of my own. Personally, I prefer using san serif fonts in my designs, however, I was assigned a serif font in a very Roman style that reminded me of font you find in the body text for novels. This font stood as a challenge for me, I was unsure where to start and how I could create an aesthetically pleasing composition, so I began with sketches. I used the sketches to create different variations of layout and composition. Although the sketches were difficult to fully see how the type would appear on the page because my handwriting does not emulate the way the typeface would directly appear. The sketches allowed me to explore unique compositions before digitally implementing my ideas.

I started by typing the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase, as well as the numbers, special characters, and glyphs. Once I was able to see the whole font and all of the elements incorporated, I began moving things around and experimented with the layout.

Upon further exploration, I decided to go with a border on only 2 of the edges for the pages, and I filled the large S with the word sabon repeated over and over.

The Sabon font was created by the well-known typographer Jan Tschichold over a three year period. Tschichold was a calligrapher, typographer, and book designer. His designs followed modernist design principles, but he returned to Classicism and began designing different variations of type - Sabon was the result. There are 4 different variations of the font: Roman, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic.

The Sabon design was initially created as the response to a request by a German type foundry for a face with equal spacing in the Roman and Italic versions, which would therefore create less of a workload when it came to typesetting. It was a font family that has that same design for the three metal type technologies of the time: foundry type for hand composition, linecasting, and single-type machine composition.
Classic, elegant, and extremely legible, Sabon is one of the most beautiful Garamond variations. It is very versatile and is always a good choice for book typography but also for text and headlines in magazines, advertisements, documentation, business reports, corporate design, multimedia, and correspondence. It has classic and elegant, but sturdy features and is practical because of its internal proportions.

Jan Tschichold created Sabon in 1964 and released the complete type family in 1967. The Sabon design is closely related to the Garamond font styles of the 16th century and is considered a beautiful, highly legible typeface.

PROCESS I then began working on my poster. The poster was very difficult for me because I had a hard time coming up with the content I wanted to project. I had multiple ideas, but I was not happy with any of them. I had been thinking about doing a museum description for artwork, a bible with phrases, or a poem. I ended on the idea of doing an Edgar Allen Poe poem because I think the font would be represented well with an eerie and creepy poem.

‡ FINAL DESIGN I wanted to display the poem in a uniform way without it being too distracting. I wanted to show an example of the font in use. I chose to use a few glyphs to show different variations of the font. After displaying an appropriate composition, I began adding the same colors that I incorporated into my type specimen. This is my final poster design for the back of my type specimen mailer.

REDESIGNING BOOK COVER The goal of this assignment is to redesign a book cover using typography to express the mood, concept, and/or theme of the book. I started this assignment with a bit of a struggle on deciding which book I wanted to choose. My problem was having way too many ideas rather than focusing on a couple. I created a list of about 8 book titles I was interested in. From there I narrowed it down to 3 and again until I decided on doing Charlotte’s Web by E.B White. While the original book cover is created using an illustration of a young girl with farm animals and the title made out of a web. I have read this book multiple times since I was a child, the most recent time I read it was for a Children’s Literature class. It was during that class that I fully understood the book and all that it entails. While the young girl, Fern, and the pig, Wilbur, appear the be the main characters, the spider, Charlotte, is the most impactful and influential throughout the whole story. I wanted to focus on the spider and her amazing webs the most.

I decided I did not want to have a literal showing of a pig or a young girl, but I would show the spider and web.
After researching multiple different iterations of the book cover for Charlotte’s Web, I was able to narrow down to what I wanted to focus on. I knew I wanted to have Charlotte and her Web be the main focus of the cover. After reading the book multiple times, I know that although Wilbur (the pig) and the young girl appear to be the main characters, Charlotte is by far the most influential of all. Charlotte plays the biggest role throughout the novel and I wanted to emphasize that.

I started by creating this drawing. I knew I wanted a light pink background to refer to Wilbur, the pig, but I wanted the web to be the most important element.
I wanted to step away from the computer and drawing a bit and tried to create a composition more out of the box. I decided the best way to show a web was to use string or fishing wire. When attempting this, I found that the wire did not appear well enough, but the string was perfect. I printed out a plain, light pink colored paper and wrapped the string around over and over again to create a web style image. It was too difficult for me to create a web similar to my drawing, so I decided to make a more abstract web. Unfortunately I did not have enough string to make it as detailed as I had wanted it to be, so I decided to move back onto the computer.

After the drawing and testing out using string, I moved onto Illustrator. I found a shade of pink that I eyedropped from an image of Wilbur. I decided to follow through with a design like my string experiment by continuing the use of an abstract web.
I then added my spider drawing to give more of a reference to Charlotte and her extreme importance throughout the novel.
