As we embrace the first half of the year, we look forward to improving and growing our services in all areas of the organisation, proudly becoming a leader in the disability sector. Our Puppy Development Centre – officially opened late last year thanks to your generous support – has already been home to 27 puppies. And the Guide Dog Services team expect that number to increase this year with the unique training facility giving the dogs the best possible chance of success on their path to becoming Guide Dogs or Autism Assistance Dogs. Find out more about the puppies’ two-year journey on page 4, with the difference these dogs make clearly evident when you read Daniel’s story on page 6. The team also continue to make great strides with the Autism Assistance Dog Program, and all of us at Morphett Street are becoming accustomed to witnessing simulated meltdowns in the hallways as part of their intensive training.

With client testimonials like,
“We’re not just
surviving anymore, we’re actually living,” we look forward to a number of placements in 2012. I’m also pleased to note there is a growing observation from our supporters at the range and depth of our Hearing, Vision and Sensory services. Innovation plays a key role at Guide Dogs SA.NT and we’re proud to offer a new service this year with a Low Vision and Falls Prevention Clinic now available to clients. Our Hearing Clinic (page 12) continues this year as part of a joint research project with Flinders University and is part of our commitment to best clinical practice.
The start of the school year has also meant a busy time for Guide Dogs SA.NT’s award-winning Discovery Centre – with feedback that the interactive centre is really starting to resonate in the education community. There are so many initiatives on the horizon for all of our teams in 2012, and it is your support that ensures our purpose – to use our expertise in dogs and sensory service provision to enhance the quality of life of people living with a disability – becomes a reality. Together we make a difference. So, thank you for your ongoing support.

A bond for life (Cover story) Daniel Earle has been totally blind for about six years due to diabetic retinopathy and kidney failure. During this time, he has been a client of Vision, Sensory and Guide Dog services at Guide Dogs SA.NT. “I’ve been involved with Vision Services and Sensory Services for a number of years and was also a member of the Music Appreciation Group as well.
“The Guide Dog Program is a sensational program, not just because of the dog, but due to the commitment and intensity from the team involved. “I lead an active lifestyle – walking wherever possible, so for me, a Guide Dog provides me with that level of mobility I need.
“The assistance I receive with grocery shopping and house cleaning from Sensory Services helps me maintain my independence – it affords me a better quality of life.
“Now my blindness isn’t an issue, because it doesn’t stop me from doing the things I like doing and I no longer worry about the things I can’t do.
“And it’s not only the practical assistance, it’s also the emotional support, which is invaluable.
“This is going to be a wonderful journey with Eiffel, I can just feel it.
“I’ve recently been fortunate enough to be matched with Guide Dog, Eiffel, who is a gorgeous dog.
“We’re going to be great friends.”
How you made this possible By making a regular gift to Guide Dogs SA.NT, many of you were responsible for helping Eiffel make the transition from this cute puppy into a highly skilled, trained Guide Dog.
Become a Puppy Sponsor today.
And there are more people waiting for this precious gift.

Farewell Gulliver After travelling 3,761km around South Australia, the World’s Biggest Guide Dog returns to his home state of NSW.
The giant model dog has been responsible for turning quite a few heads the last couple of months. Gulliver was handed over to Guide Dogs SA.NT at the end of September and has been visiting several regional centres to raise awareness of the organisation’s services. At 4.3 metres tall, Gulliver was built to replicate the iconic fibreglass model Guide Dog Collection Boxes that Australians have seen since the 1970s. Guide Dogs SA.NT’s Chief Executive Officer Kate Thiele says the giant dog has been a fantastic way to engage the broader community.
PAGE 8 PAWPRINTS AUTUMN 2012
“Along with his regional road trips, Gulliver has visited local primary schools, and been a starring attraction at local events, like Big Dog Day and the Adelaide Fringe Parade.” Rundle Mall was a vision of orange for our Big Dog Days in November and February, where puppy raisers, volunteers, staff and pups, were out in force raising money to enhance the quality of life of individuals living with a disability. “Thank you to everyone who supported Gulliver on his South Australian travels – the community’s response has been overwhelming.”

Thank You Bella Guide Dogs SA.NT has had to say goodbye to another four-legged friend – with our beloved PR dog Bella announcing her retirement.
Bella has played a starring role at Guide Dogs SA.NT for almost a decade – and is probably most well-known for her regular appearances on Channel Nine’s Weekend News. Thank you to Bella and her guardian Sue Seekamp for their tireless contribution over the years.

Sounds for the senses People living with a vision or hearing loss often experience other challenges such as social isolation.
Guide Dogs SA.NT’s unique Music Appreciation Group – established in 2009 - is bringing people together providing a fun and supportive environment. Sensory Services Case Manager Simon Wong says the group enables clients the opportunity to participate in a peer support group with music being the common bond. “Members have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback and expressed how the group provides a real sense of purpose. “It provides members with opportunities to experience musicrelated activities in the community with other group members. “Through these experiences, group members have developed increased confidence and friendship.”
“The group is not only a pleasurable activity but also a conduit of information, both formal and through casual conversations amongst other people with disabilities.” Robert, Music Appreciation Group Member “We’re finding that numbers are increasing each year, with 2012 promising to be our biggest program of events yet. Members recently attended WOMADelaide as part of a Guide Dogs SA.NT information stall, and a visit to an Adelaide Symphony Orchestra rehearsal is scheduled for later in the year. If you would like to find out more about the Music Appreciation Group, please contact Simon Wong P (08)8203 8334 or E: simon.wong@guidedogs.org.au
