#MexicanTrip There is nothing that makes me more happy than travelling. Seeing new places, meeting people, getting familiar with new cultures, and trying out exotic food - all those experiences not only make life more interesting, but also open up your mind and give you a different perspective on your own surroundings and the way you do things on daily basis. How else would we learn that there are different angles to every story and there are always so many solutions to a problem if we would never get out of our comfort zone and never be willing to try something new? Our everyday life forces us to be stuck in a certain routine, we do many things out of habit or because we simply don’t know any other way. But how can we expect a different outcome if we simply keep repeating the same actions all over again? Travelling breaks down that routine. It takes us - on both physical and emotional level - to places we haven’t been before and forces us to face new situations in unfamiliar surroundings. That’s how we grow. That’s how we find fulfilment and joy. That’s how we feel most alive. Someone said that “happiness is progress” and I couldn’t agree more. Being stuck in one place in life for too long will always become frustrating in the end and the only way to change it is to keep moving forward. We have to constantly evolve, improve, search for new experiences, otherwise life becomes dull, predictable, and simply not exciting anymore. That’s one of the reasons why so many people suffer from anxiety, depression, or sleeping problems - they simply forgot that there is more to life than work and saving money, that you need to take care own your own wellbeing in order to be happy. And happiness is rarely found in collecting things we don’t need and repeating the same actions every single day. Too many people are stuck in the same vicious cycle, never being truly satisfied and never understanding what exactly is wrong with that type of living.

So here I am, in Puerto Vallarta, embarking on a new adventure that will take me all the way to some of the most beautiful places in Mexico where I will be doing exactly that: going out of my comfort zone and

new
challenges that come with learning something new for the first time.
Travelling on my own is sometimes scary and uncomfortable, but it is at the same time one of the most
rewarding
experiences ever. After all, happiness often lies on the other side of fear.

Going Stir Crazy during Quarantine? This is a difficult time for everyone, especially parents. We are all going a bit stir crazy. Have no clue how to home school, and can’t entertain the kids enough. However, as you are reading this, know that, you are not alone. And yes…we all love our children. Having said that…
I one million per cent appreciate my kid’s teachers so much right now! I have three boys; one in grade 9, one in grade 6, and the oldest graduated high school and no longer lives at home. Peace and quiet is hard to come by in my household, now more than ever, and my kids are loud and argue all the time and as a result, I am always breaking up fights. I desperately need them to be in school. I am not a clean freak, but I like a clean house, and the mud on the walls, do not make me happy. There are always 15 pairs of shoes by the front door, soiled dishes in the sink, and don’t even get me started on the bathrooms! I don’t know how to cut hair, and they are in dire need of haircuts, so by the time this is all over, my boys will look like hippies. Can anyone relate? So what do we do to stay sane? I have a few tips that I have been using so I don’t go stir crazy.

Start walking outside Walking is very beneficial for many reasons; studies have shown that being in nature reduces tension and depression. It lowers stress levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol and improves mood. Try to make it a daily routine. Find a path and take your loved ones, or your dog, on a long walk and appreciate being outdoors. This is why I have so many muddy shoes by the door, but it’s all good.
Wash all your beddings Everyone has at least one thing that they’ve been trying to finish for what feels like forever. For me, it’s the linen closet. Often bedding that hasn’t been used gets that old smell, right? And while you’re at it, wash the towels as well. By the way, I found a great cleaning recipe on www.prairiehomestead.com for a fresh linen spray. It has vodka in it…but you can’t drink it.
Work on your resume Updating your resume is one of those tasks that fall by the wayside. It’s understandable— it’s hard, it takes a long time, and you should usually have several people look it over to find mistakes. Well, quarantine is ample time to get your resume in order for the next time you find yourself searching for a new job. Below are some sites that can help with working on a resume. www.Freesumes.com www.hloom.com
Catch up on your reading Everyone always seems to be complaining that they don’t have enough time to read. I certainly don’t, and if you’re like me, you’re not at your finest level of reading pleasure while your kids are yelling, and you’re getting flooded with house chores.

Isolation gives us a lot of downtime to fill, and while binging on the latest documentaries (my favourite) on Netflix is certainly one way to entertain yourself, wouldn’t it be much more productive and rewarding to attempt reading the pile of books on your night table? Also, give kids a few choices of diverse books to read each day. If you do not have any new books you can visit some of the sites below, where you can download books for free. Some of the best free online books for kids are Oxford Owl, International Children’s Digital Library, Amazon Ebooks, Barnes & Noble Free Nook Books for Kids.
Organize and donate I have gone through my basement and have 14 bags of toys and clothing to donate. Most people have clutter in the basement or garage. Separate the items you can donate into a bin and have a section for the trash. It is time consuming and exhausting, but it feels great to purge, or cleanse. Consider it a spring cleaning.
Cook / Bake together Everyone is cooking more, baking more, or at least, learning how too. And this is defiantly something you can get the kids involved in. This week I made an incredible roasted cauliflower and leek soup, and brown sugar banana bread that I got from one of my favourite sites www.allrecipes.com. Or open up that dusty cook book that you’re great great aunt gave you at your wedding shower, 20 years ago.
Yoga So many talented amazing yoga instructors are offering free classes that you can follow and join on Instagram!

You can choose from Yin, a relaxed, meditative yet challenging, slow stretch class where each pose lasts 5 minutes. Yin Yoga is suitable for all levels of students. It targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that are not normally exercised in more active styles of asana practice. It helps restore the body. Or an Ashtanga class - the class combines yoga breathing technique (Ujjayi breath), sun salutations, and vinyasas to encourage the creation of space with the body, mind and nervous system. It leads students to develop strength, endurance, flexibility, proper alignment and grow in their own practice. Some experience is recommended. Or Power Flow classes that are lively, energetic, flowing classes synchronizing breath with movement. This class builds strength, flexibility, and concentration. These classes are unique as they do not follow a set sequence of postures. Each class is different and will vary from teacher to teacher. You can always expect a great cardiovascular and strength building workout combined with breath work. For a great yoga class follow @yogabodiesstudios on Instagram or follow Jenna Tabachnick or Yoga with Gordana, both on IG, and both incredible teachers. www.yogabodies.ca Or do you have a half-finished painting to work on? Working on a book or learning how to drive? Re-organize your basement, a closet, toy room, office, garage, or even the kitchen cabinets. These are the kinds of activities that often take a backseat to more urgent matters with each day’s limited hours. But this quarantine or self-isolation, can provide you with the time to tackle these projects that we never seem to finish, or are in the mood to do. So each morning I decide to tackle a project. But first I have two eggs and half an avocado with my coffee. Then I clean up the kitchen from the night before. This is my ritual; don’t know if I will keep it up after this is all over, because for me, and I am sure for most people, staying at home for extended periods of time can be a challenge. So wash your hands, regularly wipe down the things you touch frequently, and try to use the time to accomplish something productive. And soon everything will be back to normal.

The Best Strength Training Exercises You Can Do Without a Gym There’s no denying that a gym can be a great resource for strength training. With so much equipment at your disposal, you have a lot of options for building strength and targeting different muscles. While going to the gym can be good for strength training, it is not the most convenient way to get your workout. With a busy life, it can be hard to get to the gym regularly. Fortunately, you have several options for strength training exercises that require nothing more than your bodyweight.
Push-ups Starting with a classic, push-ups can be one of the best strength training exercises. Needing no equipment except a pair of comfortable footwear, you can do them anywhere, and they offer a workout that does much more than build upper-body strength. If you are using proper form, you will use several different muscle groups to keep your body stable. Along with that, push-ups can also offer a good cardiovascular workout, so it is more than just strength training.

TRAVELLING IN STYLE
Squats Squats should be a part of any strength training routine. Working on squats is another option that does more than just build strength. This exercise will work wonders for strengthening your legs, and squats can also be good for burning calories. Another thing that makes squats so great is that they are a functional exercise. That means you are building strength that can be used in your everyday life. Furthermore, squats can help to improve your posture and they are also good for building stronger joints.
Planks Planks are a very simple exercise that you can do with no gym equipment. Part of what makes planks so great is that they work out the entire body. This exercise is particularly good for working out your core, but they require work from your arms and your legs. As a full-body workout you can do anywhere, planks should be on any home workout routine. Another thing that helps to make them so useful is that they are easy to modify. Of course, you can increase the amount of time you hold the plank for and you have options like high planks and low planks, but there are several different plank variations that can be useful.
Lunges With lunges, you can get a nice strength-training workout and some cardiovascular exercise all in one. This is an exercise that can help to strengthen and tone your legs, but holding the position will also engage your core and work the muscles in your lower back.
44
TRAVELLING IN STYLE
Just like some of the other exercises in this list, lunges are also nice because you have different options that can offer different benefits. If you start to get bored with the standard lunge, you can always work on variations like lateral lunges and walking lunges.
Exercise equipment does have its benefits, but you don’t need to make time for the gym for strength training. Even if you can’t get to the gym some days, the exercises on this list can give you a good workout without any expensive equipment.

8 Questions With… Patrick Thiele

TRAVELLING IN STYLE
Next in our interview series - Canadian-born Patrick Thiele, owner of LA FE Hotel and Arts in Guadalajara, Jalisco. We asked Patrick about his favourite parts of the city, current art exhibition at the hotel’s gallery, and his plans for the future. Enjoy!
1.How did you start your adventure with Guadalajara? In 2017, I had been working for many years in a very rewarding but also very stressful career as a senior manager in the Ministry of Justice for the Province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Changes to the organization were happening, and I was looking for a big change, but I didn’t expect it to be as big as it was! My partner at the time and I had been regular visitors to Puerto Vallarta, and in January 2017 we took a bus from PV to visit Guadalajara. We were enchanted! After returning home to Canada, we discovered on the internet that the business of LA FE Hotel and Arts was for sale. We soon did a quick trip back to Guadalajara and ended up buying the business. I took over the business in May and made the permanent move a few months later.
2. Could you tell us a little bit more about LA FE Hotel and Arts? We're a small hotel and art gallery in the best part of Guadalajara! We have seven bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, and two of the rooms have private balconies. We have a large common living room and dining area where we serve free continental breakfast to our guests every morning. Throughout our common areas, we have rotating art exhibitions, usually changed every 3-4 months. Our artists are mostly Guadalajara-based, and the art is always very diverse and interesting.
47

3. What makes it different from other boutique hotels in the city? First, we are a small hotel in an historic building. We have a small and loyal group of staff members who have been with us many years. All are bilingual Spanish/English speakers, and they take very good care of our guests. We’re in the very best location to enjoy the city. And our guests love staying in an art gallery, and to be surrounded by and to be able to soak in so diverse, original works of art. This isn’t your average hotel experience, and we’re proud of that!
4. How about the history of the building and the hotel's interior design? The building was built in the 1930’s, and I’m told all of the attached properties on the block were originally owned by the same family. The building has many charming historical features, including the original floor tiles throughout - different in every room - and the triangle “cut-outs” on the balconies on the front of the building, which undoubtedly were inspired by the work of famed Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Each of the guest rooms is named after an important Mexican artist, including Barragán, and of course this fits with the arts theme of the hotel and gallery. All of the furnishings in the hotel were crafted locally by artisans here in Guadalajara.
5.

SERES/BEINGS
exhibition in the gallery at LA FE Hotel and Arts? I’m really excited about our SERES/BEINGS art exhibition. We are showcasing four very talented and diverse artists: Héctor Galeano, Gibran Julian, and Daniel Rodriguez all of Guadalajara, and our first international artist, Eva Fydrych of Toronto, Canada.

We love that almost all of the pieces in this exhibition portray some type of “beings.” There are many beautiful human faces and figures, and a variety of animals from dogs and horses to axolotls (yes, I said axolotls). The artists’ techniques include ink etching, watercolour, acrylic, and oil. Héctor has even shared two very unique pieces: a cow’s skull and a coral skeleton, both painted in acrylic. After the SERES/BEINGS exhibition ends, we will always continue to have information about it and all of our exhibitions on our gallery web page at www.lafehotel.com.mx/thegallery/.
6. What makes Guadalajara special? Which places would you recommend to visit? I love the history, architecture, culture, and people of Guadalajara. The original Spanish colonial buildings throughout the city are incredible, and throughout the city there has also been a boom of spectacular modern architecture - most non-Mexicans would not expect to see skylines like this in Mexico. The food is diverse and fantastic, and of course, the state of Jalisco is the birthplace of both mariachi music and tequila, both of which you can experience in Guadalajara as much as you like! My number one recommended site to visit is Centro Histórico, the historic neighbourhood in the centre of Guadalajara around the Cathedral. There are so many beautiful things to see. In addition to the Cathedral and surrounding plazas, don’t miss Hospicio Cabañas Cultural Institute, a World Heritage Site which features the famed murals by José Clemente Orozco, and Mercado San Juan de Dios, the largest covered market in Latin America! Only a few minutes walk from the hotel is the gothic Templo Expiatorio church and surrounding plaza - check out the fantastic food and music in the plaza on Saturday and Sunday evenings. And next to Expiatorio is the University of Guadalajara’s spectacular Museum of the Arts (MUSA) which also features incredible Orozco murals. Visitors who have time should also visit the beautiful adjoining communities of Tlaquepaque and Zapopan.

From the hotel, it is also an easy day trip to the town of Tequila, or Ajijic on Lake Chapala. We can help our guests with advice on how to visit all of these spots.
7. How about the hotel's location? What's nearby? We're located in the best part of Guadalajara! Colonia Americana is a very hip neighbourhood with lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs all around us. It's very safe and there are always people out and about, especially on famous Avenida Chapultepec which is only two blocks away. I love the daily afternoon and evening tianguis (flea market) on Chapultepec - it's especially amazing on Saturdays! We are central to everything you want to visit in Guadalajara. It's an easy and beautiful walk to Centro Histórico, and only a few minutes by car to Zapopan Centro, Tlaquepaque, Expo Guadalajara, spectacular Andares Shopping centre, and the huge park in Bosque los Colomos. And the food in our neighbourhood is amazing! Of course we have fantastic street food and many traditional Mexican restaurants, as well as lots of international cuisine options and incredible gourmet dining experiences.
8. What are your future plans? Where do you see your business in five years time? Well, as we are having this conversation, the world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, so that certainly has created many unknowns for every business, and particularly for the tourism industry. But aside from that, I hope that in five years, LA FE Hotel and Arts will be even better-established as the perfect unique place to stay in Guadalajara. I hope more and more international travelers, especially those who visit the nearby beaches around Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, will broaden their travel horizons to experience Guadalajara and stay with us!
53
TRAVELLING IN STYLE
I also expect to continue engaging even more with the Guadalajara and Mexico art scenes through the activities in our gallery. Someone recently suggested we should collaborate to host an exhibition of Mexican artists in Canada - that would be fun!
