Glenn Oaks Orachard Pick at the Orchard
We work hard all year to plant and grow the best produce that we can. We strive to make sure that when you visit Garden Patch Farms, you’re taking home the freshest produce possible. Many stores boast that they have the freshest produce, but none can compare. We grow it on our own property, right behind our store. When you pick it yourself, there’s no questioning it’s origin or freshness.
Welcome to Glenn Oaks Orchard, a 30 acre u-pick farm, in Homer Glen, IL. We have more than 4,000 apple, peach, plum, and pear trees, as well as blackberries, strawberries, and an incredible selection of vegetables. Guests take great pride in picking their own produce, only to prepare them moments later for a fresh and healthy meal.
If you’d like to know when specific fruit or vegetables are ready, sign up to Be Notified, and we’ll send you an email when they are ripe and ready to pick. The weather plays such a significant role in our business, and it’s difficult to determine the exact date when each fruit or vegetable is ready. We can assure you that as soon as our produce is ripe, we send an email from the field and update this list. There is no better way to find out what’s ready!
Open Monday-Sunday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM 14159 W. 159th Street, Homer Glen, IL 60491
Changing Seasons Glenn Oaks Orchard offers an extensive selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, fruit trees, and Proven Winners© Color Shrubs. Browse our retail greenhouses to find the perfect patio pot or hanging basket. When you’re here in the spring, ask to see our apple orchard in blossom. It’s a sight that can’t be missed!
Summer at the farm is when we are in full swing. The farm is booming with produce!
Our family has worked this land for almost 100 years. Our grandfather, Earl Weiler, worked this farm since he was just a boy. Growing up we spent our summers on the farm; we couldn’t wait to get out into the fields. We spent much of our youth learning about fruits, vegetables, and discovering what would ultimately become our destiny –how to pick. The farm is more than a business to us, it is our grandfather’s legacy, and we look forward to continuing in his tradition.

Palps are used for feeling, groping prey, and transferring sperm to the female
Brachypelma smithi
fellow arthropods, they can and do take down small mammals and reptiles when the opportunity arises. In its native Mexico this species lives in burrows in earth banks, where it is safe to molt and lay eggs and from which it ambushes its prey. Habitat destruction is now a threat, and, because the species makes a popular pet, it is routinely bred in captivity. SI ZE Body length 2—3 in (5—7 cm) HABITAT Tropical deciduous forests
JOINTS
Like all arthropods, tarantulas have jointed legs. Each leg consists of seven tubular sections of exoskeleton that connect via flexible joints. Muscles run through these joints to move the sections.
SPINNERETS
Glands in the abdomen produce silk in liquid form. Using its hind legs, the tarantula pulls the silk from tubes called spinnerets. The silk solidifies into threads used to make egg sacs and line the spider’s burrow.
ARACHNIDS
With its stout, furry body, the Mexican red-kneed tarantula might seem more mammal-like than spiderlike. The female can live up to 30 years, which is unusual for an invertebrate, but the life span of the male is only up to six years. Brachypelma smithi is one of a group of spiders that gets the nickname of bird-eater because of size, and although most of their diet consists of

EYES
Like most spiders, the tarantula has either simple eyes arranged at the front of the head. Even so, it has poor vision, and relies more on touch than sight to sense its surroundings and the presence of prey.
Legs are covered in specialized hairs sensitive to air movements and touch
At the tip of each foot are two claws used for grip as the tarantula moves. As in other hunting spiders, there are also pads of tiny hairs for extra purchase on smooth surfaces.
Tarantula fangs hinge forward when attacking prey—unlike most other spiders, whose fangs are angled toward each other. Both fangs inject venom from muscular sacs within the head to paralyze the victim.

VENOMOUS FANGS
Like many tropical American tarantulas, this spider defends itself by rubbing its hind legs against its abdomen to release the barbed, stinging hairs that grow there. These urticating hairs are tiny and light, and designed to float in a cloud around a predator’s face, getting in its eyes, nose, and mouth. They cause intense irritation when lodged in skin.

Chapter 1
There was a great war, and the King had many soldiers, but gave them small pay, so small that they could not live upon it, so three of them agreed among themselves to desert. One of them said to the others, “If we are caught we shall be hanged on the gallows; how shall we manage it?” Another said, “Look at that great cornfield, if we were to hide ourselves there, no one could find us; the troops are not allowed to enter it, and to-morrow they are to march away.” They crept into the corn, only the troops did not march away, but remained lying all round about it. They stayed in the corn for two days and two nights, and were so hungry that they all but died, but if they had come out, their death would have been certain. Then said they, “What is the use of our deserting if we have to perish miserably here?” But now a fiery dragon came flying through the air, and it came down to them, and asked why they had concealed themselves there? They answered, “We are three soldiers who have deserted because the pay was so bad, and now we shall have to die of hunger if we stay here, or to dangle on the gallows if we go out.” - “If you will serve me for seven years,” said the dragon, “I will convey you through the army so that no one shall seize you.” - “We have no choice and are compelled to accept,” they replied. Then the dragon caught hold of them with his claws, and carried them away through the air over the army, and put them down again on the
earth far from it; but the dragon was no other than the Devil. He gave them a small whip and said, “Whip with it and crack it, and then as much gold will spring up round about as you can wish for; then you can live like great lords, keep horses, and drive your carriages, but when the seven years have come to an end, you are my property.”
1
Then he put before them a book which they were all three forced to sign. “I will, however, then set you a riddle,” said he, “and if you can guess that, you shall be free, and released from my power.” Then the dragon flew away from them, and they went away with their whip, had gold in plenty, ordered themselves rich apparel, and travelled about the world. Wherever they were they lived in pleasure and magnificence, rode on horseback, drove in carriages, ate and drank, but did nothing wicked. The time slipped quickly away, and when the seven years were coming to an end, two of them were terribly anxious and alarmed; but the third took the affair easily, and said, “Brothers, fear nothing, my head is sharp
enough, I shall guess the riddle.” They went out into the open country and sat down, and the two pulled sorrowful faces. Then an aged woman came up to them who inquired why they were so sad? “Alas!” said they, “how can that concern you? After all, you cannot help us.” - “Who knows?” said she. “confide your trouble to me.” So they told her that they had been the Devil’s servants for nearly seven years, and that he had provided them with gold as plentifully as if it had been blackberries, but that they had sold themselves to him, and were forfeited to him, if at the end of the seven years they could not guess a riddle.” The old woman said, “If you are to be saved, one of you must go into the forest, there he will come to a fallen rock which looks like a little house, he must enter that, and then he will obtain help.” The two melancholy ones thought to themselves, “That will still not save us,” and stayed where they were, but the third, the merry one, got up and walked on in the forest until he found the rock-house. In the little house, however, a very aged woman was sitting, who was the Devil’s grandmother, and asked the soldier where he came from, and what he wanted there? He told her everything that had happened, and as he pleased her well, she had pity on him, and said she would help him. She lifted up a great stone which lay above a cellar, and said, “Conceal thyself there, thou canst hear everything that is said here; only sit still. 2
