-Sophie DeFrancesca

Featured in this exhibition are sculptural interpretations of some of the most iconic female pop culture figures of the mid 20th century. These stars were larger than life; opulent and sexy, strong yet vulnerable. True embodiments of “The American Dream”, they captured the imagination of audiences around the world at a time when many lives had been shattered by war.

Post WWII is often thought of as a repressive era when feminine women weren’t thought of as smart or assertive. This conflicts with my earliest memories of my mom and aunts and older cousins who made Canada their home after surviving the horrors of war in Europe. The immigrant experience was different. These women were super strong and capable having endured unspeakable hardships, yet were very comfortable with their femininity. They embraced North American culture and style while still retaining the many values they brought from the “old country”, namely a strong work ethic and dedication to family of which I am a beneficiary.

Tragically, I lost my mother to cancer at the age of 10. She too was orphaned at the age of 10 during the war. Looking back on photographs of her as a fun-loving young woman in the beautiful dresses she wore, I know the loss she suffered in her early life was faded by her good fortune of landing in Canada. Her spirit of resilience inspired me during my most challenging days growing up, and it’s through these pictures I kept a connection to her. It is easy for me to draw parallels between the super stars of this era and my mom, all heroes in their own right, overcoming adversity to achieve their desires.

The women honored in this exhibition, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Diana Ross, and Sophia Loren, are idealized for their talents and beauty but are also recognized as strong and independent women who overcame adversity to achieve personal and professional success. As culture evolves, and trends change, it is important to stop and consider those who came before us and to remember how their courage and beauty graced our lives. This exhibition marks 40 years since my mom’s passing, yet her memory remains in my heart still. I aim to express the love and dedication she so generously shared with me during her brief life through this body of work. -Sophie DeFrancesca
