5A7: Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns. (Knowledge & Understanding - Critical Awareness)
I have developed an understanding of my chosen subject through my extensive research into various newspapers and magazines and also through online research of articles. I identified unreal expectations through the production of my images, making decisions to swap monoprint textures to gouache instead, this allowed me to have a quicker turnaround of image making and stopped me from getting behind on my work when space in the print rooms was in short supply.
5A8: Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution. (Knowledge & Understanding Research)
5B5: Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
I identified limitations of creating editorial illustration when I first started producing work for my project at a larger scale I realised that once I resized the illustrations for the article some of the details of my work were no longer visible, I tackled this problem by reducing the amount of colours I was using in each piece to stop my work from being overcomplicated, I then worked on incorporating more simplicity into my work by working on my line quality and incorporating gouache textures into my work to add artistic intrigue
In my project my work began by exploring the robots themselves however in group crits I took on other peers advice and started to look more instead at the ways in which artificial intelligence effects humans themselves and the ways in which I can explore the way we feel towards the slow but sure integration of AI in our lives. I was sure to create a body of work that gave a varied opinion on the subject, good and bad as I wanted to show the versatility of my practice
As shown on my blog I explored many different forms of 5C6: Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical image making for my project from monoprint to collage and finally arriving at the use of gouache textures to help and conceptual approaches add energy and intrigue for younger audiences into my

work. I surveyed a range of conceptual ideas as this was something I knew needed to be a part of my project, having decided that my target audience as well as the Guardians usually readers was to also be aimed at a younger generation to get them talking about the possibilities of AI.
5C7: Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
I believe in this module I have strongly developed the technical competence of my work and practice, I set out to complete a series of six illustrations that were adherent to that of industry standards. I identified issues in that I realized that certain medias such as digital and mono-print weren’t working well with my style and I needed to incorporate more advanced color, line work and conceptual ideas into my work.
5D5: Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills. (Key Transferable Skills Presentation and Evaluation)
I have clearly demonstrated the steady progress of the module on my blog, looking at different methods Excellent of producing work and closely analyzing the which methods complement my style in the appropriate ways. I feel I time managed my project well and because of this was enabled to explore many different research possibilities, artists and application of these into my own work.
Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information)
Very Good
Summative evaluation I was really excited to begin 505 and get to choose my own area of study for the module, I knew from the beginning that I wanted to look into editorial illustration as my prime goal when I leave university is to become an editorial illustrator. I began by looking for online articles to spark my imagination, however many of the things I was finding to begin with seemed too dark and serious to base a whole project on, and coming from the last module in which I was creating work for quite a dark and depressing subject I felt my practice was in need of something a little different and more light hearted. One of my interests other than illustration is film, I started looking there for inspiration, the film Ex-Machina aired on tv one night, I was instantly hooked by the concept of Artificial Intelligence and the way the film portrays the subject. I started looking for more resources and found that the guardian had a great search engine that allowed me to look at all the Artificial Intelligence articles the newspaper had published over the years, I found this a great resource for inspiration for the project and instantly began illustrating my ideas for a selection. Soon into my project I found that my work was lacking slightly in research, I discussed on my blog the ways in which I felt as though my work was having an identity crisis, I was making work that was far too digital for my usual aesthetic, and I was unsatisfied with the work. I went back to the drawing board to look for artist inspiration, at the beginning of my project my ideas had been predominantly focused around illustrator Victo Ngai who creates large life like conceptual scenes to explore a subject, I started to wonder why I was trying so hard to create work like someone else; self-comparison in my illustrative practice has always been a big issue for me, I feel as though my own work never matches up to that of professional standards – this is an insecurity I have really had to face during this module, it has tested my practice when it comes to thinking of ideas and ways on illuminating ideas for an audience, through the module I feel as though I have regained a great deal of confidence and faith in the way that my practice is heading. One of the main things I struggled with at the beginning of the brief was that I was putting far too much emphasis on the actually robots themselves, forgetting that many AI (Artificial Intelligence) machines don’t actually look anything like the classic square robot, I received criticism in a group tutorial that I needed to focus more on the ways in which AI effects humans and what this could mean for our own future. I found this comment on my work extremely helpful and started looking for more articles that gave suggestion to the general public’s thoughts and feelings. After finding all the material I felt was necessary for my research on the Guardian website, I decided to create a series of six illustrations focused around the articles I had sourced, I decided to create more than one illustration per article in some cases, I did this to show versatility within my practice and the different ways I was able to approach an idea. An artist that I felt very inspired by throughout my project was Ping Zoo, at a time in my project when I felt energy and artistic presence was lacking from my work I took inspiration from the textures she uses in her illustrations, I found these gave my work a whole new lease of life, incorporating gouache textures into my work is definitely something I will continue into my future practice as in the past I have struggled with my work looking too flat and static. Overall I am extremely happy with the outcome of my 505 project, I think I have achieved what I wanted in creating a series of editorial illustrations to a professional industry standard, I think the images all effectively communicate the ideas of each article, some taking a much more conceptual approach than others however this was something I felt needed to be present in my work, I wanted to show variation in conceptual imagery, Something I will be carrying on into my future practice is a more limited color palette, as I think this was one of the main successes of work in this module, In the past I feel my work has appeared ill thought out and jarring because I have not made effective use of color palette in my work, I made a point in this module of limiting myself to two or three colors per image and I feel that this has allowed me to create a much more professional look to my work.
