Inspired by the idea of unity, solidarity and togetherness, this season designers are speaking out on the current social and political unrest in America in response to Donald Trump’s inauguration, whilst also supporting the beliefs of their consumers along the way. Moving on from a strictly feministic trend, ‘We’re with You’ allows brands to voice their opinions loud and clearly in a graphically, statement way to make a stand and leave their mark on the fashion industry for fall 2017. Handwritten slogans, bold messages and protest infused placards, designers are imbedding an array of gender-led statements onto their garments to support women’s rights in 2017 against Trump’s controversial public remarks.

Used as a motif to express opinions and emotions reflecting the social and political angst of the 70’s/80’s, the DIY trend for patches has been revived. However, this season, it offers a social media alternative, translating the Generation Vis movement (LS:N Global, 2016). Lipsticks, crowns, watermelons and spaceships; individuals are taking on a personalized patch trend, whilst incorporating the growing takeover of the emoji, to translate the current technologies that influence younger consumer lifestyles and habits in 2017.

CELESTIAL HOUR. 2017 sees a more sophisticated, exclusive approach to the space-age trend, focusing on shimmering stellar textures and twilight prints, moving away from the pop culture infused trend of 2016 celebrating the life of David Bowie. Reflecting the exploration of astronomy and the solar system in 2017 in regards to NASA’s new discovery of seven planets and the approaching celebration of fifty years in space, the trend has also been adopted by various artists such as Jim Hodges and Joanie Lemercier, showing the print in new contexts. Nocturnal sceneries, galactic stories and an emphasis on constellations, the trend offers an array of illustrations, embellishments and glittered surfaces, translating a cosmic narrative in an opulent orbiting way.

Oversized, vintage and urban, Retro Riot demonstrates the new vision of sportswear today, moving away from active-pro usage for garments and instead, looking to a demand for retro athleisure wear. Champion, Ellesse and Kappa; each one of these brands are making a classic comeback to fashion, allowing consumers to achieve retro exclusivity, whilst also finding comfort in oversized clothing as a coping mechanism against the social unrest among youths in society today. Moving on from 90’s hip hop culture, the trend is now being influenced by the current demand of house music and a rave culture among youths in 2017. The trend allows consumers to feel a sense of belonging during vulnerable times, whilst also allowing them to obtain individuality and social expression through clothing.

As sportswear continues to filter into everyday wear, we start to see a further focus on athleisure and the rebirth of the track pant. Originally inspired by the hip-hop culture of the 90’s and Tommy Hilfiger’s daring promotion of the trend in 1996, the track pant trend has been updated with a sartorialist edge, drawing an emphasis on flared silhouettes, to translate premium sophistication for fashion-forward females. Accented with high rise zips, contrasting side stripes and relaxed tailoring, the athluxer trend demonstrates the movement away from active wear being worn as functional work-out wear and instead, a nod to contemporary, leisure wear.

ALPINE APRÈ S. Inspired by the 60’s and 70’s glamorous approach to skiwear, Alpine Après challenges the functions of apparel for the slopes and instead, creates an emphasis on comforting turtlenecks for wrapping up warm after a day up the chilling European Alps. A key trend for fall, Alpine Après draws attention to voluminous rolled down collars, merino knitwear adorned with updated fairisle prints and snug silhouettes with statement horizontal stripes. Maintaining a sportif appeal, the trend fits into both winter sport dressing and athleisure apparel for the fashion-forward early adopters of trend, who are keen to take Emilio Pucci’s original après-ski look and give it a modern day sartorial meets street wear infused makeover for fall 2017.

Larger than life, child-like and innocent, Surrealist Escape creates an experience in-store for consumers, pulling on the concept of child’s play and nostalgia for A/W 2017. Allowing consumers to escape the insensitive reality of society today and the current political unrest around the world, the trend takes inspiration from immersive, toy sculptures to distract and draw the attentions of 21st century consumers. Executed in a light hearted, stylized aesthetic, the trend takes consumers back to a time when the choice of which toy they wanted to play with was their biggest worry.

A recurring trend for VM & in-store, neon lights for AW 2017 is taking on a lustful concept, communicating romance related messages and warming the hearts of consumers, as referenced in the interview with Alexa Pearson et al. With tongue and cheek statements reworked to incorporate the takeover of social media apps such as Tinder and WhatsApp and a motif to confess feelings of passion and love, the trend projects a cinematic, technological appeal. The trend also translates the idea that society is encouraging freedom to express more overt emotions and allowing attitudes to flourish in an electric way.

BACK TO BOTANICS. As more consumers are moving into urban, industrial landscapes, the growing need for natural surroundings has heightened. Consumers are becoming more concerned with the idea of sustainability when it comes to the environment due to the on-going ecological deficit. A focus on minimalism, in-door greenhouses and oversized plants allows stores to meet the demands of their conscious consumers, whilst also translating a narrative of the contemporary garden for early adopter home-owners. Giving consumers an escape from the polluted environments that awaits them outside the stores, the trend offers a cleansing, health and well-being orientated setting.
