Dakine Titan and Omni Gloves Keeping our hands warm was a priority on lceface, and these gloves for men (the Titan) and women (the Omni) were welcome pieces of equipment. The Titan gloves were so warm, in fact, that we didn't need the removable liners (which are touch screen compatible), even as the temperature dropped into single digits. Both designs are filled with synthetic high loft insulation, have a cinch strap for fit, an extended wrist gauntlet with pull-cord closure to keep snow and cold out, and a pouch for hand warmer packets.

EDEN JACKET ST R A F E “A fully-featured, insulated yet breathable women’s jacket,” says Strafe of its Eden. This delectable trifecta is achieved in part thanks to three-layer, waterproof, breathable and highly stretchable Polartec Neoshell; 100 percent Polartec Alpha insulation (100 g body, 80 g sleeves and hood); plus a nylon, air-permeable micro rip-stop liner. The list of additional features runs for miles. And it boasts a thoughtful story, too: In a nod to Strafe’s home base, the jacket is named for the once-secret stash in the once-closed-off section of Olympic Bowl, at Aspen Highlands. The Eden zone opened to the public in early 2016 and has inspired countless humongous smiles ever since—same as this jacket will do beginning in the fall of 2017.

PICTURE

The Elsman boasts a tailored, long fit; 10K/5K waterproofing and breathability; 40g PrimaLoft BLACK ECO (crafted of 60 percent recycled post consumer polyester insulation) in the body and sleeves, and so much more. That’s a lot of bang for your buck when the MSRP is listed at just $200. Additional features include a Tafetta lining; two-way front zipper; media compatible chest pocket; mesh-lined pit zips; powder skirt; critically taped seams; stretch-mesh goggle pocket; inner storage pocket with headphone port, etc. For those who spend the majority of their days ripping around the frontside, the Elsman gets a Heisman.

Scott markets this beautiful piece to women who spend their days logging “long ascents and deep descents.” Indeed, the Explorair 3L delivers ruggedness, exceptional performance and comfort to those who rely on their outerwear to power them through hearty days in the backcountry, or full-throttle inbounds adventures. Dermizax (20K/10K) fabric provides rockin’ protection from scrapes and cuts, wind and water while remaining plenty breathable, comfortable, lightweight and soft to the touch. And we’re talking noticeably soft, here, making this offering a tough one to turn away from. Furthermore, the list of construction features seems to stretch for miles: Fully taped seams, powder skirt, pack-friendly seamless shoulders, push-button adjustable hem and hood… It just gets better.

Picture Organic Clothing is changing the game with its groundbreaking, “virtually seamless” Iceland Proknit jacket. The technical three-layer shell is the first of its kind—it’s created from a single piece of fabric. This construction element yields a few key benefits: First, waste (excess scrap) is eliminated from pattern cutting. Second, Picture says this garment provides one-and-a-half times more stretch than traditionally woven options, while simultaneously maximizing durability and breathability through strategically placed thread varieties and densities. Specifically, the jacket is thicker in areas prone to cold and thinner in areas that tend to overheat. MSRP is not yet available as of the publishing date, but we’re told to expect something in the $500 range—very reasonable, we think, given the great story and patented technology, here.

LE BENT This sleek and technical baselayer from Le Bent utilizes two main materials: rayon, a byproduct of bamboo, and merino wool. Together these provide warmth, breathability and anti-odor properties, and the garment’s soft, close-to-skin fit ensures the materials can do their jobs as efficiently as possible. Further additions include flat lock seams, offset shoulder panels and a scoop bottom that will please gear junkies and weekend warriors alike.

MEN’S MERINO 250 SPORT PATTERN HOODY SMARTWOOL The Merino 250 Sport Pattern Hoody is brand-spankin’ new from Smartwool for ’1718. The hood, shoulder and pockets are made of 56-percent merino wool and 44-percent DWR-treated polyester to achieve warmth, waterproofing and breathability. The inner layer is comprised of 100-percent merino wool for warmth, thermo-regulation and odor-resistance with a protective polyester overlay. Finally, perhaps best of all: it weights in at just under a pound, meaning it’s a great product for backcountry skiers or, simply those that don’t want to drag a ton of weight around.

Consumers are always looking for more environmentally friendly products, and Phunkshun’s Aviator piece—the brand’s very first baselayer—goes above and beyond in that category. Touting REPREVE fabric made of recycled water bottles and handmade in Denver, this women’s-specific product is also moisture-wicking, sports UPF 50-plus protection and odor control tech. It’s built to handle serious exertion but also keep you warm. It’s quite stylish, too, easy to sport offhill without hesitation.

Combining the style and comfort of a traditional sweater with modern baselayer technology, the Dakine Women’s Callahan Fleece is all about versatility. On the outside, it’s a ski-friendly, street-conscious product, decked out with a hood, thumb loops and split hem. But, the beauty is in the details: body temperature-regulating poly yarns that provide warmth and comfort, plus Polygiene permanent odor control technology to keep everything fresh from first chair to last call at the bar.

MIDLAYERS

BAS E L AYE RS

For the third consecutive year, Patagonia rules the land of midlayers. The icing on the cake? You’ll see elsewhere on this page that Patagonia tops the outerwear, midlayer and baselayer categories in 2017, completing a noteworthy trifecta. Back to midlayers, though. The North Face remains tight on the leader’s heels, maintaining its second place position three years running. Arc’Teryx and Under Armour have been leap-frogging one another for podium rights over the past three years, with the former edging out the latter this time around.

Having assumed the throne last year after nudging out Under Armour, Patagonia maintains its position of power this go-round. Making a claim at said throne is The North Face; the brand has earned backto-back silvers. Meanwhile, it’s champagne for Smartwool this year as the Steamboat Springs-based company enjoys its first podium after placing fourth over the past couple of years. Meanwhile, Under Armour, top-dog two Trend Books back, eyes the competition this year from outside of the winner’s circle, intent to make its way back into the mix.

After placing second the past two years behind The North Face, Patagonia slides into the top outerwear spot this go-round. As aforementioned, this victory secures Patagonia’s reign across the entire softgoods spectrum, including outerwear, midlayers and baselayers. Eric Wallis, Patagonia’s product line manager in the snow sector, says, “Consistent product quality season over season and designing with durability and repair-ability in mind drives our brand loyalty.” Wallis adds, “Timeless design is imperative to our process, if we want snow gear to last 30 or more years, we can’t chase fast fashion or fleeting trends. Our materials and standards testing is the most stringent in the industry. Many of our products cost more, so our designs, style, and durability must last longer, perform, and protect for their entire life cycle.” The brand’s mission statement is build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm and use business to inspire solutions to the environmental crises. It seems these three core values—running through Patagonia’s products, environmental campaigns and grassroots activism support—are keeping the moral identity of the brand in a well-received, well-respected place.

Hestra secures the three-peat. That distinction is well-earned; it’s what you get when four generations of Swedes work tirelessly to build a glove that lasts. “I think being a family business can provide stability and a long-term perspective in aspects big and small,” says Jonas Magnusson, 29, a great grandson of Martin Magnusson, Hestra’s founder. Jonas currently works as the export sales manager for the company. “Oftentimes, [the family aspect] provides a good foundation for developing the business and the products further,” he adds.

HELME TS Smith secures back-to-back gold following two years in the silver-medal spot. Meanwhile, after spending three consecutive seasons in the third-place position, Giro bumps up a notch. Omnipresent in the top-three is POC, who after a couple of years as the undisputed ruler, now sits in third. Note the jump of percentages from the third place spot to the fourth.

It’s a four-peat for Oakley. And it’s not by mistake. “Brand loyalty is driven by reliability and credibility,” says Oakley’s Category Manager for Helmets and Goggles, Hans Arneson. “At Oakley, we have established reliability from our brand heritage steeped in performance and innovation, and we have gained credibility by developing products good enough for the world’s best athletes. Because of this, our consumers and athletes alike expect products that offer cutting edge technologies and innovations and have specific performance benefits for their sport.” “Every season we start with a problem statement: What are we setting out to solve?” says Arneson. “We then tap our network, from elite athletes to recreational participants, to determine a meaningful solution for the problem statement. From there we look at how we can infuse these ideas across all our categories and sports and work efficiently to create a solution that make sense for the Oakley brand and product line-up. All of this helps in creating consistency and keeping that brand loyalty.” Smith holds steady in second place, four years running. Oakley and Smith hold a considerable lead over third place finisher, Spy—bronze medalist two years running—with 67%, 64.7% and 35.2% of respondents saying, “I’d buy it.”

Dakine, too, secures an impressive four-peat, as pertaining to the packs/luggage category. The Hood River, Oregon company holds a considerable lead (59.9%) over runner-up, The North Face (45.7%). The North Face and Black Diamond Equipment have earned the number two and number three spots four years running, respectively. How’s that for consistency?

Smartwool re-affirms its dominance in the world of socks, finishing first over the past four years by margins of 36, 19.8, 20 and now 28.5-percent. Patagonia places number two for the second time in as many years, and Under Armour rounds out the podium this year, marking its first top-three appearance in the category.
