ᄈesign is not just what it looks like and feels like, design is how it works . . . Since an early age, I have had a passion for all things creative. Whether it was busting out a tune on the piano or snapping a photograph on the streets of Europe, I have always completely immersed my mind, soul and heart into creating. My time spent studying at Sydney Design School has helped increased my passion for design, w h i l e e n h a n c i n g m y s k i l l s a n d a b i l i t i e s a n d e v o l v i n g m y c o n c e p t u a l i d e a s i n t o r e a l i t y. I believe the key to great design is developing a strong concept that connects with the client and brief and delving into the minds of those using the space. Design is not only about the physical appearance, it is about the psychological journey of experiencing a space.

THE CONCEPT
THE BRIEF The design focus of this project aims to address the physical, emotional and educational needs of children with autism. The design calls for a safe learning environment creating the opportunities within the facility that would encourage and inspire a sense of calm, imagination, communication and escapism, whilst suppressing any overwhelming sensory input from the surrounding environment.
THE CONCEPT ‘ To t a k e t h o s e f l e e t i n g m o m e n t s o f c a l m a n d c o n n e c t i o n a n d m a k e t h e m l a s t l o n g e r ’. T h e objective of this design is to free the child’s sensory network of unnecessary traffic and sensory noise by enabling a sense of calm and serenity within their environment in order to better connect with others. Clouds have a symbolic presence of serenity and calm and thus the form and aesthetic properties of a cloud have formed the conceptual design through out the centre.

FOYER, DINING & LIVING AREAS
The materials palette for the bedrooms needed to evoke a sense of calm and rest, a palce for residents to unwind and relax, and as such, two separate colour palettes were chosen for the high and low care bedrooms. A soothing palette of of blue and greys have been proposed for the high care dementia residents. Blue is the colour of the mind and helps clear thoughts, calm the mind and aids concentration. It is serene and mentally calming. T h e l o w c a r e b e d r o o m c o n s i s t s o f e a r t h y g r e e n a n d g r e y t o n e s .
