EXTROVERTED/ INTROVERTED RESIDENTIAL The studio project found in Osborne Village, Winnipeg, consists of two separate sites with two different buildings that are designed for two types of people: the extroverted and the introverted. The extroverted building is overexposed and faces two streets where people can watch and be watched. The introverted building is muted behind other buildings and offers an internal shared living situation.

WINNIPEG ARCHITECTURE CENTRE My manifesto for this studio project proposed architecture as an intervention into your life to help create moments of awareness. The building was placed in the Exchange District of Winnipeg and was able to embody a calm space through the way the facade uses different aperture sizes and colors to filter light into the building.

THE CONVIVIAL CITY: A REALM OF SOCIABILITY The project looks at how architecture can operate to connect people in their daily routines, specifically focusing on social infrastructures that can be added to bus stops around the city. Today’s cultural and social context creates unique challenges, especially in relation to the gradual change in the way we communicate and socialize with one another. These circumstances have led to a need to redefine how architecture can support our interactions and create memorable and meaningful connections with one another in the city. Image

MOVING COFFEE KIOSK This rolling coffee kiosk has the ability to transform it’s appearance as different building components can be folded in and out to control how open or closed the kiosk appears to the public. The vendor has the ability to move these components, which will change the temperature of the kiosk. In the winter, it is likely the vendor will choose to keep the large doors closed and operate through the small window in the rear of the kiosk. In the summer as the weather improves the vendor has the option of fully opening this folding kiosk. Left Right

NESTING BAR KIOSK The project will continue to look at different social infrastructures that can help to create connections at the bus stop and it will propose how these designs can be placed around the city. This small intervention uses nesting as a means of expanding this small bar to double its’ size. The technology focus for this bar kiosk revolved around designing how the center column can allow for the nesting component to swing out. Through a column with a ball bearing and wheels that move on a track, the exterior nested building is able rotate in order to expand. Left Right

BELLOWS CAFE KIOSK A hinged mechanism is used to drop the exterior wall and create a patio space, which can be covered with a retractable roof. A bellows mechanism is used for the concertinaed patio roof covering. The outcome for this design plans to support the user by giving them the ability to shape the space for their own intended use.

FOLDING BUSKING KIOSK The left and right sides of this busking kiosk can be folded out as seen in the plan on the left. These sides are doors in their closed position however, the busker can unfold one or both sides into pieces of furniture for the audience to rest on. The pieces fold into benches, bar tops, or places to lay. Although the furniture pieces are attached to the kiosk, they can pivot along their axis in order to sit with a view of the musician.

DRAWING STOOL The drawing stool is a social prop for the sidewalk. The stool draws in chalk as the user drags the stool around the sidewalk. The hope is that this stool can become a conversation piece as people drag their stools up to other people’s stools. The drawing stool is a social device that has the ability to create a dialog between people and their immediate context. The project is inspired by Allan Wexler’s Body Language, 2009.
