CONTENTS NARRATIVE & RITUAL ISOKON DONKEY PROJECT QFC SOFA PROJECT UMBRA X JOHN LEWIS DESIGN CHALLENGE UPCYCLING HOME OFFICE FURNITURE

N A R R AT I V E & R I T UA L The activity around which you must design this set of artifacts must be chosen by you, it should ideally be solitary and tailored to the individual. Ritual for this project is the process of making and drinking . Allowing the consumer to wind down and relax with aromas of their favourite tea that fills their senses. Final products made are, ceramic pots and mug. Also a wooden tray to ensure that everything that is needed is in one place and makes the process of making the tea simple and easy to do.

Final outcome is a set of pots, a mug and a tray to keep everything together in one place. From the research of Japanese tea, wanted to make the process of making the tea as relaxing as possible. By having everything you need to make the tea in one place makes this process very easy. The tray is the perfect place to keep the tea while it is brewing. The aesthetics of the tray means that it can be easily carried from underneath. The product can be use with one or two pots that are able to stack on top of each other (photo showing with one pot being used) . If two pots are used , one of the pots holds the loose tea, while the other acts as a lid. Also once the tea is made the strainer is able to be placed in the top pot. This prevents any surface from getting wet or getting the tea leaves everywhere. The mug is inspired by Japanese bowls, the user is able to cup the mug with either one or two hands. The handle on the side is the ideal place to rest the index finer on the top and the middle finer on the bottom. The overall design is very sleek and minimalist, which ties in with Japanese design.

From looking at traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, the user would grasp the cup with both hands. The cup would also fit perfectly in the users hands. Taking inspiration from this, looked at what is most comfortable when holding a mug. Very often would leave a gap between the index and middle finger. So designed a handle/ finger rest that would fit perfectly in-between the two fingers.

Initials sketches of donkey were quite bulky. Originally wanted to be able to put record player on top of the donkey, however doing this wouldn’t make the product portable. For the final design, stripped it back to a minimal design that would allow for the donkey to be portable.

Q F C S O FA P R O J E C T Live project with QFC designing a sofa that is to be used in an open plan living space. Chosen retailer to design for is John Lewis, with the minimum cost for the design of the sofa being £900 makes them the perfect retailer to design an open space sofa for. This sofa has been designed as a ‘Family Sofa’, aiming to be enjoyed by the whole family due to its slouchy nature and comfortable over-sized seating Designed for open-plan living, the back of the sofa is utilised through the use of storage; ensuring that it is multi-use for a large space. Elastic strips are shown upholstered into the back of the sofa as a feature to store notes, children’s paintings or recipe pages alongside space for a pin or chalk board; as chosen by the customer. The hard timber storage within the base can be used to store children’s toys, throws for cosy movie nights, or used as a communal space to store shoes and put them on together in the morning before school. Model scale is 1:5

DEVELOPMENT Throughout designing the sofa, constantly developing the idea. Originally it was very bulky and quite high up off the ground with extremely chunky legs. Then made it a little lower with a thinner leg. Added storage on the end inside the seat, but this design didn’t meet our target market as much. So Finally went for a larger, lounge seat that would allow the user slouch or lie down. Also with the storage, moved it to the back of the sofa where it is paired with the bungees to create the unique sofa storage space.

U P C YC L I N G To design and make an original product/ piece of furniture/ piece of clothing out of a waste material. As an outcome for this product a single light has been created using an old log with a glass bottle acting as the shade for the light.

Experimentation with different materials, such as bottles and old logs. By doing this a range of different possible ideas were created. This then lead onto getting ideas for the final end product. All of them would be lights apart one, that one would be a wine glass. To get a quick idea to see what the wine glass would look like the top of a wine bottle was placed into resin. Resin was then poured into the neck to prevent liquid from coming out of the bottom, so if it were to be used as a wine glass it would be functional. Material experimentation

HOME OFFICE FURNITURE

There is a growing market trend in the area of home office; more people are tending to work from home in a variety of ways. This space saving desk designed for 2 modern is a response to this brief. It’s ideal people who have minimal space in their homes or want to have a desk that is multifunctional and doesn’t take up too much space.

PROBLEM Within larger cities it is hard to find a house or an apartment to live in that has enough space. With people having the option to work at home within their jobs, people living in small spaces may not have the room to do so.

RESEARCH Initial inspiration came from research, looking at multifunctional furniture. Leading to a range of ideas and developments. Looked at the option of having different features so the desk was a well organised work station.

KEY FACTORS Having enough space for the product is the main key issue. Product mustn’t look too bulky or big otherwise it may take up/ look like it is taking up too much room. Is multifunctional, so can be used as something else other than a desk.

Initial and developed ideas

Overall measurements for the final product. Measurements are in mm Technical drawings

MULTIFUNCTIONAL WORK DESK The desk is made out of Oak, Beech, Aluminium and Fabric. Target market for this product are people who live in small spaces and don’t have much room for a place to work while at home. Product would be mounted onto a wall. This allows the product to be placed anywhere within the clients environment. This also allows the user to set the height the desk is mounted onto the wall to their desired height for a more comfortable position when working. The use of dowels makes this design minimalistic therefore meaning it wont look like its taking up too much space in the clients home. The desk can be adjusted to the clients desired angle. This is so if they are working long hours they are more comfortable. The aluminium grid allows the user to peg up their ideas. This will make it easier to see their designs. As well as it will free up space on the desk from any clutter.

Boards on the desk come with the product when purchased. This is so the user has a flat surface to work on. The smaller board on the desk is a chalkboard one side while the other side is a whiteboard. This allows the user to easily and quickly write down any ideas without the waste of paper. The main drawing board will have a ledge to prevent paper from sliding off when the desk is at more of an angle. The Cork board attaches to the wall part of the desk allowing the user to easily pin up ideas. Small pots can also be purchased so that they can hang on the dowels attached to the wall. These would be ideal for stationary that would usually take up space on the desk. When the desk part is folded down the boards will be able to go behind. When not in use as a desk it becomes a decorative piece. If the additional pots are bought the user may use them as plant pots to grow flowers or different herbs. 1:5 Scale model
