2.

MASTERPLAN • Our primary goal was to view this school as a public symbol within the neighborhood, influenced by its character. • The school’s functions would not only revolve around the students, but better assimilated with the rest of the community, as well. We decided on the schoolyard as the focal point of the special layout and students’ social life. It allows for communication, both inward and outward, alternative modes of movement, and a sense of intimacy and security.

Renovation of 12 Apostles area, in Thessaloniki, Greece 4th-year, Conservation of Historic Monuments & Sites Studio. July 2008 Group work. Professor: George Lianos

8.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

THE SITE Our study area is situated in the west end of the historical Centre of Thessaloniki, inside the Byzantine walls. It includes the urban surroundings of 12 Apostles Church and the Arch of its old Byzantine temple, situated in the Southwest. Agios Demetrios Street is in the North of the study area.

HISTORICAL IDENTITY 1. The church of 12 Apostles is the focal point of this area, founded in 1310. 2. Part of the Arch is still standing in the Southwest of the Church on Paparigopoulou Street. 3. The Byzantine Cistern in the Northwest of the Church, adjacent to the walls is also intact. 4. Parts of the Western walls are also still standing. 5. The Byzantine walls of this section are in a remarkable condition, considering their impressive height.

9.

INTERVENTION GOALS

a. Quality restoration of public space, surrounding square of 12 Apostles Church. b. Path ‘‘Network’’ c. Infrastructure equipment d. Parking schemes e. Addition of green spaces f. Promotion of the historical significance of the site, through the incorporation of the archaelogical finds. g. The construction of of an elevated deck over the finds, in order to facilitate tours. h. COMPLETE URBAN RENEWAL OF A REFUGEE HOUSING COMPLEX in Keratsini, Athens 5th-year Building Technology Studio, April 2010, Group work. Professor Panos Kokkoris / e-mail: pkokkor@arch.duth.gr

13.

ISSUES

Floor Plan +/-0.00

We were asked to transform this urban block from a two-storey labyrinth of square houses, to a nine-storey commercial and cultural centre for the whole of Keratsini, which is a forgotten, poor, industrial area of Athens.

The citzens of this particular area are used to a certain way of living: small scale gatherings and musical events in open galleries and court yards, a lively public space. Floor Plan +11.0

14.

MASTERPLAN • Main goal of the project was the upgrade of freely- expanding small houses in a neighborhood of well designed 70m2, 85m2 and 110m2 all-comfort included houses for 80 families.

After designing the basic parameters on an 1/500 scale, we were then asked to focus on a selected area and design in more detail (1/200). We chose the center of the project.

• We wanted to keep the ‘neighbourhood’ feeling to the residential area, so we created a type of cell- block for the houses. A three-dimensional grid, that the rooms would «slide» in and out of, thus creating better lighting conditions or open shared spaces. • This housing grid would occupy all the upper side of the site, creating an atrium in the middle, for better lighting and ventilating conditions.

On the lower side, we designed a «commercial front». A heavy, one-line type of building that would create a boundary for all the cell-moving action of the housing complex.

VIDEO - ART WORKSHOP FACILITY in Sykies, Thessaloniki 5th-year Building Technology Studio, December 2009, Group work. Professors: Poly3eni Mantziou / Dimitris Polychronopoulos

17.

ISSUES • The site was an old quarry under the Northern Roman walls in Thessaloniki, Greece. • We were asked to design workshops, annual accomodation space and an exhibition area for video artists. The latter had to be of a semipermanent and flexible nature. MASTERPLAN All the spaces for public use -yellow- were situated on the underground and ground levels and the secluded accomodation spaces -red- on the upper levels.

The rocky landscape was handled with great care. Excavation was used only for the creation of a lower level open public space, plus some concrete and stone walls to support the otherwise light metal structure. Metal beams that formed a two-storey metal grid were used for the exhibition area which allowed the panels three dimensional movement.

CONSERVATION/ RENOVATION OF A NEOCLASSICAL HOUSING-ESTATE, within a historical Complex, in Xanthi, Greece 4th-year, Conservation of Historic Monuments & Sites Studio. July 2008, Individual work. Professors: Nomikos Michalis / Dousi Maria, email: mdoussi@tee.gr

21.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

the plot consists of : 1. Π shaped two - storey warehouse to the East. 2. a two - storey Housing - estate in the Centre of the plot 3. a two - storey facility housing the company’s offices Northeast of the plot.

THE SITE

4. Supplementary space used as a stable, later converted

into a garage.

The Complex is situated in the centre of the city of Xanthi, on Andrea Demetriou Street, adjacent to the Municipality Hall. • the complex was built in 1900. • the American Company Gary purchased the lot in 1931. • because of the tobacco crisis in 1938 the ware - houses gradually become derelict. In 1981 the ownership passes to Spierer Freres and CO S.A, of Geneva. • in 1996, the Municipal Hall of Xanthi retrieves ownership.

• a wooden extended open - air amphitheatre

The 9 metre stone Wall was constructed by Mehmet Niazi Bey (the first owner of the complex), to keep the female population away from prying eyes.

22.

Typology of the Neo-classical Housing - Estate • Symmetrical layout • Centrally located entrance in the facade • Secondary entrances at the back of the house • Harmonious spatial transition from public

to private grounds • Narrow balconies line the first floor facade • Formal rooms promoting the social life of the residents

Morfology of the Neoclassical Housing - Estate • The structure consists of the base, the main ‘‘body’’

and the top • The axes of the symmetrical facade is accentuated by the main entrance and the overhead balcony • The eaves of the roof lines the symmetry of the building

23.

ISSUES • The complex situated between the Centre and the primary residential area, remains unexploited and derelict. • The tall wall surrounding the complex, gives it an inpenetrable sense, and is visually restricted by the surroundings MASTERPLAN

1st FLOOR PLAN

Taking into consideration the original purpose of the complex, its unique dual residential character, the numerous rooms and the grounds of the front of the complex, we wish to present a proposal for its conservation & transformation. We recommend a public funtion for the Housing - Estate, and more specifically:

music-room craft room w.c painting-room play-room closets entrance info office kitchen medical treatment Hamam pottery-room

‘’Recreation centre for children, between 6 and 12 years old’’. A space where children can develop their natural talents, creativity and social skills

• We recommend a monochromatic base for our colour distribution. We chose cream for the basic frame of the structure to further stress symmetry. The internal elements have a darker shade, whereas external elements have lighter tones.
