Artist Inspiration for Initial Images for Idea Three

Artist Analysis: Daniel Gordon •

Daniel Gordon was born in 1980 in Boston and was raised in San Francisco, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bard College in 2004, and a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Art in 2006. His notable group exhibitions include New Photography 2009 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Greater New York 2010 at MoMA PS1. He is the Author of Still Lifes, Portraits, and Parts (Mörel, 2013), Flowers and Shadows (Onestar Press, 2011) and Flying Pictures (powerHouse Books, 2009). In 2013 Gordon was a critic in photography at the Yale School of Art. He is represented by Wallspace in New York City, and lives and works in Brooklyn.

Daniel Gordon uses photography to create images that toy with notions of artifice and authenticity. The conditions of this image which I find to be artistically satisfying is how they appear lively and are visually stimulating in terms of the cut outs varying in tones which juxtapose against each other which gives the creations a 3D effect, adding complexity. There may be an underlying meaning to Gordon’s work sending off an image of how the media depict features they favour from certain models and enhance them. When creating his work he may slice features of the model’s face in which he favours or vary in colour in order to construct his own views and perceptions of people. Although there is a lot happening in the images, they do not appear to be too crowded or distracting and still focus on the main subject matter whilst exposing controversial meanings in which the artist may have had in mind when in construction of rebuilding the model’s faces.

In my approach to this set of photographs using inspiration from Gordon, I will select parts of a variety of female model’s faces and hair in which are more common in media advertisements in which contrast to those in which I am collaging it with. I want my images to continue with the theme of using bright, bold colours which stand out and are visually striking.
