Boston University Museum

Project Type: Commercial/Educational - Museum Project Title: 808 Museum Location: 808 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA Completed: Senior Studio IV - Spring 2013

Concept: I designed a mid-century modern art museum for Boston University. The building is an old 1920’ s Cadilliac factory and showroom built by architect Louis Kahn. This building had character and included elements such as a large skylight, car ramp in lower left corner of the plan, and a showroom with a ornate historic ceiling set at 18 ft. above the finish floor that we were required to respect in our own way. We then were required to showcase mid century modern furniture designed by designers such as Charles + Ray Eames, Nelson, and Noguchi and paintings by artists such as Jackson Pollack, and Willem deKooning. For my design I was really inspired by the art of this time period, which was full of expression, and movement. I was especially inpsired by the artist Jackson Pollock who’s art was physically a record of his movement and creative process. I took this idea of active art and recording of movement and translated it into my reflected ceiling plan where I have a curving wood ceiling that rhythmically unjulates up and down leading the visitors and students through the museum program. To continue the concept of movment I created an active floor plan by mixing slight curves and straight lines to naturally guide visitors through the spaces. Main materials used in this project are wood, concrete, stretched illuminated pvc and glass creating an overall neutral industrial aesthetic. I then with upholstery, furnishings, and wallcoverings adding pops of color, which I mostly used pops of red to respect the Boston University colors. I also included chandeliers, and table lamps I designed in a lighting class that were inspired by artist Willem deKooning.

Save The Children Office

Project Type: Commercial - Office Project Title: Save The Children Deutschland Location: Alexanderplatz, Berlin, Germany Completed: Junior Studio III - Summer 2012

Concept: The site was located in Alexanderplatz, which is an up-and-coming neighborhood, and is filled with shops, cafes, and theaters. The building is a historic building, which used to be a printing factory for a major newspaper in Berlin. The client, Save The Children, is a NGO (Non-goverment/profit organization), therefore we had a limited budget, and they requested that the design should be sustainable. Also, there is a five year lease on this office space, therefore everything built/ placed in the space had to be easy to disassembled, and move out. I was inspired by Berlin’s history, culture, and trends. I was especially inspired by the European trend of using cardboard in interior design. Since cardboard can be made from recycled content, is recyclable, and can be very durable, I decided to make cardboard and other sustainable materials with similar aesthetics, such as MDF or particle board, as my main materials throughout the office. I found a company that manufactured cardboard furniture in Germany, sold the furniture in bulk in packs for cheap, and delivered furniture flat, therefore low delivery charge. The individual workstations were made by a company who manufactures in Germany too. The workstations were durable, flexible, adjustable, and 100% recyclable. I also found a european company that produced recycled cardboard 3-D acoustic ceiling tiles, which I used throughout the office to created a fun and inrigueing environment. In the end, I wanted to aesthetically create a warm, natural, and playful, yet professional office space that was very sustainable, low cost, and everything in the space could be disassembled, and recycled at the end of the 5 year contract.

Senior Cohousing

Project Type: Residential - Senior Cohousing Project Title: 15 Tudor Cohousing Community Location: 15 Tudor Street - Cambridge, Boston, MA Completed: Junior Studio III - Fall 2011

Concept: The whole idea behind this project was to create a development residents from age 55+ can live comfortably giving them an option to age in place. The residents are also artists or retired artists, which allowed me as a designer to have fun with the colors and materials. I had to design the layouts of 21 individual residetual units to accommodate the 3 living styles of couples, roommates, and single residents, the layout of several common areas that go with the nature and/or characteristic of a cohousing life style, an architectual feature inwhich I choose to design my main entry staircase and a connector that connected the two buildings on the site, the landscaping, and the parkinglot. I wanted my concept to be about the community lifetsyle and create an environment that help support the sense of cummunity that naturally creates moments of interaction between all residents. I acheived this by designing all common areas to have an open plan with glimpses into other connecting common spaces. I also added a porch like area to the front of every residential unit to create a semi- public informal space so that neighbors passing by can stop and in and say catch up with you or simply wave and smile while you are reading, watching TV, or etc. in that space.

Headquarters Lobby

Project Type: Commercial - Corporate Headquarters Lobby Project Title: Adidas Headquarters Lobby Location: Boston, MA Completed: Sophmore Studio II - Spring 2011

Concept: My initial conceptual intstinct for the Adidas Lobby was to create an active space. Then branching off of this idea of an active environment my concept grew and developed off of a ribbon shape I created when sketching designs for an indoor track, which reminded me of a shoelace. I used this ribbon, shoelace shape throughout my design with the track ramp, the mezzanine track, detailing on the columns, display cases, and flooring. All these elements created movement within each space and movement from space to space within the lobby’s program. Then to support a physically active and healthy environment for the Adidas employees I added a gym, track ramp and mezzanine, and a juice bar to the required program. Besides being active and healthy, I wanted to be eco- friendly, since Adidas was starting to be more conscientious of the environment. I used Terrazzo flooring, which uses recycled glass and stone, recycled rubber for my track and ramp, Corian for all my desks, displays, and the bar because of its durability and long life, and I even included a rug that is made of recycled shoe laces.

Wellness Spa

Project Type: Commercial - Wellness Spa Project Title: Aves Location: Newbury Street - Boston, MA Completed: Sophmore Studio II - Fall 2010

Concept: My concept was based on the bird of tranquility, known as the Loon. Due to my research on the Loon’s life stages, and using a photo of a Loon while sketching, I incorporated and created abstractions of the bird, and it’s life in my design.

Restaurant

Project Type: Commercial - Restaurant Project Title: Claude’s Location: Old Train Viaduct on the Avenue of the Arts - Paris, France Completed: Freshman Studio I - Spring 2010

Concept: My concept was based on paintings done by the famous impressionist, Claude Monet. I was really inspired by the context of the site, being that it was on the Avenue of the Arts in Paris, and the fact that there was a big park on the roof of the viaduct. These two elements of the site were perfect to tie into my concept because Monet and many other impressionist artists liked to paint nature scenes. I used soft curves in my design due to the soft paint strokes of the impressionist painting style. I also was inspired to create this big circular blue light above the bar because impressionist artists play a lot with color and light in their paintings .

Wine Store

Project Type: Retail - Wine Store Project Title: Bacchaus Wine Store Location: California Completed: Freshman Studio I - Fall 2009

Concept: My design was driven by my research and studies of the geometry of the space. My geometry was inspired by an image of green wine bottles bottoms. This image showed me that a wine bottle is made up of multiple circles, varying in size, which are stacked up on each other. My concept was influenced by the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, and the images to the right of this page. I noticed alot of images of wine bottles have jewel tone colors, which made me think of gem stones/ or jewels, and royalty, which drove me to use pops of color in glass used in the display cases and counter tops. I indicated the pops of color with light colored pencil shading in my floor plans and by coloring plexy glass in my model.
