Every single website with a login system, has something called a MySql database where different data is stored. Nearly every single website has these, and they store data in there, including login details. So every single facebook users name, password, email and all that is stored in Facebooks MySQL database. Facebooks database, has 3 columns for every person, the first column has their email, the second has their first and last name and the third one has their password. Of course, the database is not public for anyone to see, that would be just plain stupid by them. The data is split up to 166 databases, each having millions of users details in them. Every single word, every single letter in the database is encrypted with facebooks algorythms, so if anyone actually gets access to the database, they’ll just see some random text which they won’t be able to understand. An example of an encryption (MD5) – 2323ca2b822b13eb4d611b7ddc8c9dda. Clearly, noone will be able to understand that. But, it’s possible to figure out the encryption and then decrypt it back to normal text, which in our example will be „cryptedexample“.

For that, we searched facebooks website for vulnerabilities which would help us get access to their site. We did that by SQL injection and a little bit of XSS ( cross site scripting ). Eventually we found some vulnerabilities and got access to the database. It took us more than three months to figure out how it worked, by checking accounts which passwords we knew, we finally saw a pattern and figure out the whole algorithm. When it finds it, all it has to do is decrypt it by using the algorithm that we figured out. The whole process takes about 4-5 minutes as the databases are huge and the data has been encrypted multiple times. That’s all there is to it. Every time facebook finds one of the vulnerabilities we’ve discovered and patches them, we have to search for a new way to get their databases which actually isn’t very hard. Facebook is full of them and nearly anyone with a little knowledge of SQL injection and XSS can get access to them.
