Concept This educational exhibit design focuses on the sensory experience of water through the manipulation of the floor element. It is intended to create an environment that further connects campus through education as well as containing areas of public research and exhibition space. The building is sunk into the existing topography to emphasize a connection to the natural landscape as well as draw people into the building from all sides. To incorporate the use of the floor element, the auditorium space is underground with a large skylight supporting a pool of water overhead. This allows for natural light to penetrate into the space, and communicates the inherent blending of the floor and ceiling elements as well as the core essence of what it means to truly experience water.

02 | MIXED-USE COMMUNITY CENTER Urban hub | Pullman, WA Spring 2014

9

Concept Located in the heart of downtown Pullman, this community center features a series of both public and private spaces, including a community learning center, campus study extension, shared gardens, and an extensive plaza. The programs are carefully oriented to encourage community living and also to bridge the connection between nature and the city. The north side of the building features a triangular deck which extends over the river and, in combination with the plaza design, encourages direct interaction with the water. The plaza features angled vegetation strips which reflect the irregular spacial organization of the internal programs and further serves to communicate the fundamental and inherent connection to the natural world.

Concept This design for an elementary school began with a study on the possible manipulation and aggregation of a single complex classroom unit form. After the form was identified, it was then manipulated to allow for a glulam structural overlay, and transformed to create a series of units. Once the aggregation was created, the structural system was extended to create a total of fourteen classrooms and several common spaces. Finally, the selective usage of the structural overlay was designed to communicate a heirarchy of public, private, and mixed-use spaces and circulations.

20-Acre Public Park Roof Type1

Concept Architect: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Element Diagrammed: Roof i This diagrammatic study attempts to analyze the Newport Beach Civic Center, which focuses on three main concepts through the utilization of two roof conditions: The Nature of Place, The Nature of People, and The Nature of Materials. Designed at the scale of the car and with the fuction of a public park and gathering space, the Civic Center aims to create and strengthen a sense of regionalism and community. It utilizes a series of undulating wood roof panels to communicate both a practical transparency of materials and a social transparency of the staff to user relationship in its aims to relate its surrounding community.
