Our algorithmic identities are formed through the data mining, manipulation, and reproduction of our online activities. The identities generated by algorithms are neither true nor false, good nor bad but rather unstable, imperfect, post-processed renderings of who we are. To be imaged by forces external to oneself is a fact of contemporary life; I believe that a productive friction might occur in bringing our algorithmic identities into tangible proximity to our physical bodies and self-defined identities. This thesis seeks to explicate, represent, and materialize our algorithmic identities through the design of a video game and physical installation to play the game within. Alexander Galloway’s notion of the inter/intraface is utilized as a theoretical framework to engage with the entanglement between our digital and ‘real’ selves and spaces, representational and indexical information, and diegetic and non-diegetic visualization. The video game is a didactic, playable model of how algorithmic identities are shaped through the collection, manipulation and reproduction of networked actions and activities. The player acts as the algorithm, mining to resolve an image of a figure who is going about their online activity. The game acts as the substrate or interface between the player’s physical body and digital self. The installation acts in conjunction with the game, choreographing the entanglement between digital and physical space, one’s digital self and one’s physical self, one’s body and one’s identity, the body and its image, and finally the identity and its image. The project spatializes the interdependencies in how our algorithmic identities are shaped.

Image being displaced through space and different media The video game is played within a series of gaming stations situated within an installation space. The physical installation utilizes a sequence of cameras, projectors and mirrors to duplicate, reproduce, and move the image of your body and algorithmic identity as played through the video game, through the space. The space is meant to be a collective realm and game where the cameras, projectors, and mirrors are intractable so as to encourage people to manipulate and curate the ways in which their image is being moved through space. Finally, people would be encouraged to post images to instagram to integrate the social media realm into the overall experience. 9

The single family home has long been a fertile laboratory for architects to study and develop ideas about program, form, and materiality. The ideas studied at the scale of the single family home then become scaleable proposals for civic and institutional architecture The premise of the studio was to utilize the single family home typology to develop an architectural manifesto and a series of scale-able concepts. In addition, the studio was asked to leverage two houses, either in conjunction with one another or in contrast with one another to expand upon their manifesto. The site of the studio was the neighborhood of North End Detroit. Much like many residential neighborhoods in Detroit, North End experienced a long period of disenfranchisement and lack of investment from the city. However, the southwest corner of the neighborhood is the current terminus of the new Q Line, and is slated as a site for new development in Detroit. The question at the center of the design work in this studio was: how can a single family home in Detroit’s North End be leveraged towards restoring a critical urban edge and creating a semi-public space while also protecting the resident’s privacy and home life?

the project manifesto The site selected for the project was a unique condition within the urban grid of North End. The site, composed of 3 parcels of land had three public frontages facing three different streets. It was wedged between two prominent public spaces within the neighborhood, a well maintained public park and the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative. These parcels were barren; in selecting this site, the proposed houses were asked to both restore a critical urban frontage within the neighborhood, but also serve as the private residence of a family. The two houses were envisioned as one cohesive compound, for either a multigenerational family or for a family with an adjacent income generating property. The two volumes, situated to hold two opposing corners of the site, created two complementary outdoor spaces for the houses, one becoming a shared patio/ backyard, and the other becoming a semi-public pocket park. To balance the concerns of privacy and the public nature of the parcels, the elevation became a important site of design within the project. A series of elevational wrappers were developed to strategically compose opaque, semi-transparent, and transparent material conditions; wrapping the 2 homes respectively, these wrappers also helped to mediate the condition between the street frontage and the home interior, as well as the condition between the home interior and the private outdoor space. To hold the street frontage and also further protect the privacy of the residents, the two homes and the site were wrapped in an expanded metal mesh screen. The scrim allowed for the flow of light and air, while providing additional protection from the public street frontages. It also served to frame the two respective outdoor spaces. The scrim in conjunction with the elevational wrappers give the experience of occupying the liminal space of the threshold or perimeter.

In this studio I was asked to consider how data and data visualization might be used as a source of both meaning and form for a building. The exercise began first with data mining - finding a source of information that was measurable and indexing the raw data. From there, a 2D visualization was generated, and this 2D visualization had the opportunity to take many forms from bar graphs, pie charts, etc. Depending on the method of 2D graphing, 3 dimensionalizing the data could take different forms. The first studio of the 2 year M-Arch curriculum is always dedicated to design of a civic/institutional piece of architecture. This semester the program was a fire station. This typology is unique because it combines a number of programs together that are infrequently combined. Domestic life finds itself in close proximity with a garage, industrial storage, administrative functions, and recreation. In addition, we were asked to include a public piece of program into the design. The site of the studio was an existing fire station in Ann Arbor.

As a representation of the data, the pixelated map began to look like Legos. This gave me a methodology for 3 dimensionalizing the data: I re-indexed the symbolic blocks as building components (walls, beams, columns, lintels, etc). In order to better organize the building components, I took the pixelated map and, based on an early programming exercise, allocated certain parts of the map to different programs. These programmatic clusters would received all the symbolic blocks and re-indexed building components in their allocated part of the map.
RECREATION CENTER 30% LIVING QUARTERS CLASSROOMS/ ADMIN
The data I selected was a documentation of the land use and zoning in the area of Ann Arbor that Fire Station No 5 serves. This area comprises mostly of the city north of the Huron River. From there I cross referenced the land use as compare to zoning for parcels of land and extracted different land use/zoning types and how much square footage each of these categories had. I indexed this information as “symbolic blocks” comprised of a size (250 sf), color (land use), and symbol (zoning. I remapped the information back onto the map of Ann Arbor, producing a pixelated map of the city.

building parti and organization he overarching parti of the building was a soft story structure, with the T fire apparatus comprising the entire ground floor, while all other piece of the program were located above on the second story. The building is situated so that the fire trucks, parked in bays that are angled at 45 degrees, can easily exit the fire apparatus onto Beal Ave, which takes them to most of the neighborhoods. The 45 degree angle of the bays allows for the building to take on a narrower, longer proportions. In between each bay is a work station for the fire fighters to dress down and inspect their equipment. The main and public entrance is located on the east side of the building off of the street. From there, one is led into the circulation core, up onto the second floor which houses the living quarters of the fire fighters, the administrative suite of the fire house, and the recreation center, which is also a public space where the public can come exercise. The building components are arrayed in a grid that acts at units of 2 foot by 2 foot, 12 feet by 12 feet unit, and a 36 feet by 36 feet. Structural elements such as columns and beams are spaced at the widest increment, while components such as wall panels and window apertures plug into the smaller sizes.

Through the entanglement of material, program, and people, our project Compounded, seeks to build upon the intense sense of community that exists in Detroit by drawing upon the collective memory and history of Detroit. Once a bustling residential neighborhood, the earth on and around our site holds physical remnants of North Corktown’s extensive demolition in the wake of the city’s decline. The soil contains the cultural memory of the city - it’s industrial past, its period of economic and social turmoil and its more recent resurgence. In our project, we propose that this collective living complex be built, in situ, out of rammed earth. With sweat equity and industrious labor, the past is re-inscribed into the emerging vision of Detroit. Programmatically, Compounded focuses specifically on programs and people that mix living and working within the unit. We utilized precedent building typologies that drew upon this relationship, such as the carriage house and the live/ work townhouse, to create flexible workspace or commercial space embedded or attached to the units. We also implemented a attached rental unit typology, the garden level studio, to introduce a secondary, smaller unit for living. This unit would cater to more transient demographics such as the digital nomad. The live/work gradient of program also reinforced public to private relationships and a material parti strategy across the site.

Early program studies developed an interest in internalizing the public program at the center of the block, creating a public core to be shared by residents but also inviting the public within the community living space. Our site specifically occurs where there is a hiccup in the street grid, generating an unusual knot of alleys at the center of the block. This translated to a site strategy in which we turned the existing, knotting, alleyways into a new retail corridor where the storefronts faced a new public park at the center of the site. These storefronts were embedded within the townhouses. Meanwhile the carriage houses, in a reversal of their typology, fronted the street, forming a more introverted street frontage. We then inscribed a secondary street called the “Mews which served as the entry into the private domain for all residents (townhouses, studios, and carriage houses). This established a public to private gradient that made the alleys of the block the most public arena. This program strategy was reinforced by the material parti of our project. Rammed earth, with its highly tactile, monolithic aesthetic became the street facing facade, presenting incredibly thick walls with inset windows. In the mews, a composition comprising of rammed earth on the first floor, warm cedar wood siding on the second floor, and punch window openings trimmed by blackened steel created a more residential scale and tone to this frontage. Facing the retail alley, storefronts with a greater amount of glazing and transparency communicate the public nature of this frontage. Thus, the project fully integrates the structural and finish materiality with the program diagram and site strategy.

The project proposes that the earth displaced by the proposed structure would become an essential part of the new housing. The reasons for this are twofold: availability of resources and for the experiential qualities and resonance that rammed earth imbues a structure with. As a structural system, rammed earth is low tech, labor intensive to build. In Detroit, human labor and sweat equity are both resources readily available. Additionally, earth would have to be excavated and removed from the site as a process of building regardless. Taking advantage of these existing resources, even though they are slower and require greater human labor, creates a interdependent work flow within the project, emphasizing and economy of means rather than an economy of scale and speed. The earth contains the collective memory of Detroit, both in a poetic, figurative sense, but also in a very literal one. The long period of disenfranchisement the city faced produced a urban environment that was first vacated, deteriorated, and finally left fallow. Artifacts from the past can be found in ground. In using earth taken from the site, we propose that this housing complex be built out of a substance that holds the cultural memory of the neighborhood. 52

Winter 2018
This project was from a 4 week design exercise called Between Frames. In the first part the class each selected a post modern building and a contemporary piece of art, which were then sampled to create a 14” x 14” x 2” elevation composition. As architectural design exercise, the elevation was exploited due to the flatness/shallow depth when drawn or seen two dimensionally. As elements are composed within the shallow depth, they can move literally in front or behind other objects, or other qualities such as color, transparency or the slippage of patterns might allow for the appearance of this movement, thus confusing the legibility where elements are physically and where they appear they are in space. The design shown below samples from Michael Grave’s Schulman House and Ashley Bickerton’s Me Portrait No. 1. The overall placement of different architectural features borrowed from post-modern strategies utilized in the elevation of the Schulman House, while the colors and the supergraphic were borrowed or developed from Me Portrait No. 1. Several iterations were developed digitally, utilizing the 2D orthographic view before being translated into a 3D artifact, with consideration given towards hardware selection and joints.

The images shown are from a 4 week exercise from the Representations class. The class used a piece of geometry interpreted from a case study (Eisenman’s House VI) and used the software ZBrush to project that geometry onto a cube. The project undermines the orthographic projection in architectural drawing, as the projection uses the viewport and geometry to clip and boolean the cube and the case study together. The generated geometry was then rendered with shadow and taken into Photoshop. The raster image was de-constructed based on the gray scale tone of the image. Once the rendering was separated out based on tone, the image was taken into illustrator. In illustrator, the image was reconstructed using patterns. The variance generated from translating the image from a raster into a vector based format created unique moments where hatches overlap and cross one another. In my own work, I took the same hatch pattern and carefully played with the line work and orientation to get tonal difference and overlap in the patterns.

The set of models shown are a series of 12 x 12 plaster casts. The premise of the 4 week workshop was to use fabric as a surface to cast into and, in doing so, undermine the material legibility of the plaster. The forms generated are soft and voluminous appearing, but are made of a rigid material. A wire mesh was used as an armature to place the fabric in and pour the plaster. The mesh was further cut so that the openings gradient-ed in size from large to small holes. 4 different kinds of fabric were used, burlap, plastic sheet, spandex, and a super stretchy spandex, and each interacted with the gridded armature in unique ways. The controlled opening sizes let one directly compare how the different fabrics impact the resultant cast.

The sequence of models shown are from a 4 week exercise that incorporated the use of ZBrush, CNC milling, and vacuum forming. It was the first stage in a two part process, this act entailed the composition of the geometry and then its actualization as a physical object. Inside ZBrush I took a recognizable character (in this case Mario), multiplied him several times, and performed a series of transformations and deformations on him to create a composition that was then sectioned through a bounding box. The composition was then milled out of high density foam. Once I had the form, I vacuumformed a sheet of styrene over the foam to create a surface that was taken into the next stage of the class.

Fall 2017
In the second act of the exercise, I returned to ZBrush to apply color, texture, and pattern to the geometric form. My particular interests in the geometry that I had generated was the interesting section that was created from the intersection with the bounding box. The section cut was treated differently to create a strong differentiation between it and the moments that were receding in the model. The geometry was rendered with color, pattern, and shadows; the image generated was printed on a water transfer film. The plastic surface generated from the last act of the exercise was then dipped through the image so that the colors, pattern, and shadows were re-applied to the physical geometry. The process is imperfect however, and the mis-registration of the image on the form creates misreadings and undermines the legibility of the form.

young people’s chorus 64
Dattner Architects | Graphic Design February 2015 through March 2015 I was tasked with designing a graphic vinyl wall cover for the non-profit group Young People’s Chorus. The base image was photo of the full choir singing at the Lincoln Center. The final wall covering is a pixelated, dot version of the original image, straddling the line between a recognizable representation of the children in the chorus and an abstract grid of circles in shades of saturated colors. The wall covering served as a material and graphic accent, wrapping the exterior surface of the main rehearsal space, measuring over 80 linear feet. The graphic went through a number of iterations, studying the impact of the shape of the pixel, circle radius, color variation, and gradient in the negative space.

Dattner Architects | Feasibility
through CD
May 2015 through July 2017 Completed: 2018 Location: New York City, NY Photography: Ari Burling Dattner Architects was commissioned to design the tenant fit out for NYU Langone for a new ambulatory care center. The program included several different facilities. On the first floor there is the main entrance to all three facilities through a shared lobby and bank of elevators, the waiting room for ambulatory surgery, and a physical therapy treatment space. On the basement level there is the outpatient surgery facility with four operating rooms, a sterile core, PACU, and staff/administrative spaces. On the second floor there are 2 family practices with examination rooms, an x-ray room, offices, and administrative spaces. I was a core member of the design team from the very beginning, iterating on program planning layouts, performing building, ADA and health code analysis, selecting materials and furniture, testing and laying out furniture and equipment per client needs, rendering presentation images, and producing construction documents. In addition, the team was simultaneously working on the construction administration for the podium, as Dattner was the architect for the base building. The developer was building out the infrastructural connections to the fit out for th NYU Langone based on our design. The project was fast-tracked, with a complex program and demanding client. It required a multi-prong approach where we were simultaneously designing, frequently presenting to the client, and updating the layout to the facility while coordinating the changes with the base building drawings and team and the team for the NYU’s tenant fit-out.

Dattner Architects | SD through CD May 2015 through September 2015 Completed: 2018 Location: New York City, NY Photography: Ari Burling Dattner was hired to design a cafe for the non profit group Grand Street Settlement [GSS]. The cafe functions as a commercial and event space, but is also a vocational training facility for GSS. My role on the project team began during schematic design where I worked on the space planning for the cafe. As the project moved into design development and construction documentation, I helped to specify furniture, finishes, and lighting for the space. In addition, I drew equipment layout plans to help coordinate the location of plumbing and electrical for all of the cafe’s equipment and helped in the overall drawing production for the project in the construction documentation set.

Scarsdale Public Library 80
Dattner Architects | Schematic Design + DD May 2015 through September 2015 Beginning in pre-schematic design through schematic design, I was the project team’s junior design. My responsibilities were to look at precedents, analyze the site, perform fit studies, create imagery and model (digitally and physically) the proposed design. The original library, with its domestic scale and emblematic stone walls, is a recognizable public icon within the Scarsdale community. As such, the community has made every effort to preserve stone the aesthetics of the building, which were adopted for the 1970’s addition. The new additions retain and strengthen the elegant, modern horizontal lines of the 1970s addition, while subtly marking its differences by changes in materials and an increased degree of openness. Each of the new additions integrates itself with landscape features, such as the majestic trees framing the entrance plaza and the reading galleries that take advantage of the natural views toward the pond and wooded areas. The proposed design opens up the library interior to the site, allowing in daylight and views to establish a strong new connection between inside and outside.

South Elevation Beyond its integration with the site, the proposed design is also based on a series of general ideas that guide specific design decisions: flexibility, autonomy, scalability, and technology. Critical here was the library’s desire to function as both a library in the traditional sense, and as a community facility and gathering space. The entry of the library, with it’s large meeting rooms and cafe has the ability to be kept open after hours so that people may continue to use the meeting and performance spaces even after the library has closed. Partitions in the meeting rooms can subdivide the spaces further so that varying group sizes from 150 people to 15 people can meet. The main collection of the library has been opened up through the demolition of the mezzanine. Books have been redistributed onto lower height shelves to maintain sight lines through the library. This allows for greater light penetration into the center of the library, and utilizes the double height space to create a grand sense of scale for such an important civic space. Reference desks are aligned down the visual spine of the library allowing for easy wayfinding and a more active, engaged staff. A technology suite accessed off the main collection will host vocational classes and a maker suite similar to a Kinkos for document printing, binding and plotting. The traditional library functions remain with a mixture of hard and soft seating with large communal tables and clusters of sofas and armchairs. The books shelves of the main collection are all located to the interior of the floor plate, with seating was placed in the reading gallery by windows with exposure to natural light and views to the neighboring park. Smaller study rooms that accommodate between 4 and 10 people provides additional flexibility in the kinds of groups that the library serves. The Scarsdale Public Library holistically provides both an expanded civic institution and a flexible recreational and community space for the Village of Scarsdale. 83
Hudson Table: Philedaphia 84
Factioned | Design Development June 2018 through August 2018 Location: Philedaphia, PA During my summer internship at Factioned, one of the projects I was given was a tenant fit-out project called Hudson Table. The program of the space was an event space and teaching kitchen, where people would attend cooking classes. The primary design element that tied together the exterior treatment of the storefront and the interior space was the use of expanded metal mesh. On the exterior, the mesh was utilized as a awning/screen along the signage band. The expanded metal mesh signage band set a new datum across the storefront, distinguishing Hudson Table from other establishments in the building podium. On the interior, the mesh is utilized in two ceiling clouds, suspended over the two primary spaces, the kitchen and the seating area. The two clouds help to break a large, tall space into two “rooms more intimate in scale. The niches in the storefront are clad in a blue accent fabric, and the remainder of the space is kept neutral.

the community as a classroom During the summer of 2012 and 2013, I traveled and had the opportunity to work in cape coast Ghana. My first visit was through a studio abroad program called the community as a classroom; structured as a design build studio, the class was introduced to life, people, and culture in cape coast Ghana. We met with the fishing community, the market stall owners, school children, and local leaders of the area, grappling with their every day experiences to catalyze a design issue that we might begin to address during our stay. One of the prompt that arose was pedestrian safety along a busy thoroughfare. Traffic accidents are a common cause of injury in Ghana and with no sidewalk along this street, the cars would intermingle dangerously among people walking. With our limited budget and a galvanized group of young local children, artists, and market stall owners – we designed a painted sidewalk of bright oceanic blues and whites. The final painted walkway began as a series of fish diving amongst one another playfully, coiling together to become a strand of rope. My second year I traveled to Cape Coast as a research assistant, helping to set up a vocational/educational workshop for a group of local people interested in becoming small business owners. We taught them how to make their own soap and helped them to develop a distinctive brand to help distinguish their soap at the market place. The workshop was part of a a group or projects by obdl (open boundary design lab) - a non profit that worked collaboratively with the Muslim community. Both years, the success of the project hinged on the involvement of the community, and our ability to advocate strongly for a grassroots level of interest that proved the design could be sustainable after the designer leaves. 88
