5948 North Sheridan Road Edgewater, Chicago, IL 60660

Senior Capstone Project Fall 2009

[boutique hotel] 50,000 SF

The neighborhood of Edgewater, located only twenty minutes North of downtown Chicago, is a prime location to tap into all that Chicago has to offer. Public transit is abundant to both downtown and the suburbs, making it a convenient stay for anyone seeking to get a feel of

Chicago’s personality. 5948 North Sheridan’s location inspired the concept for this design, taking the culture people love from Chicago and embodying that love into one hotel. Rooms are themed in business, sports, cuisine, entertainment, and relaxation to represent Chicago’s trademark Loop, sports teams, museum campus, Grant Park, nightlife, and culinary tastes. Chicago is a vibrant and personable community which draws dynamic people with extreme talents and interests.

Choice Hotel is one location where guests can come to get a taste of

Chicago.

Sun passes through the outer tube to the absorber tube which

contains a small amount of liquid in a constant cycle of vaporization and condensation.

The vapour heats a second stream of liquid that feeds into the

heat tank, and then it condenses again to repeat the cycle.]

EXPO is designed to embody the idea that any form of the arts is never complete.

Rather, the value in

experiencing the arts is through the processes involved from the beginning stages through the advanced.

As you

proceed through cultural processes, one takes influences from the other arts.

Art is influenced through musical,

dance, theatre, and culinary experiences and all combinations thereof.

Building a seamless experience that enhances the beauty of Robert Allerton Park; Form is extruded planes of landscape running parallel to rain drainage patterns.

These planes

come out of and fold back into the existing landscape and encourage movement through the landscape and building by following the natural contours of the site.

The floor

patterns, both inside and out, highlight the natural contours of the site and are filled with various materials to create a blurring of inside and outside environments. non-reflective glazing on the

Reflective and East and West

facades of the building blur the relationship between spaces by reflecting the surrounding landscape and allowing views to the interior.

Finally, the curved wooden ceiling of the interior performance space represents the canopy of the trees outside and both the shade and light it can provide its occupants below.

[Form took shape around the idea that this space for performance should essentially be an extension of the forest itself. In doing so, the building took on an organic shaped roof and ceiling to represent the tree canopy. The contours of the building follow the contours of the site to provide movement through the site and building. The shape provides an artful interpretation of the landscape Process without taking away from the landscape itself.]
