Just like on your ranch or farm we have had a lot of projects to do this year. And after last year’s -35° and 55 mile an hour winds with blowing snow on the day of our bull sale, it became apparent that in the future it would be a good idea to keep the cattle here and build a sale barn at home on the ranch. This also meant the undertaking of building a whole new set of corrals for everything to function properly for the sale but also for the cattle work that happens at different times during the year. And as with most projects everything seems to take at least three times longer than what you initially think it may take. But in the end, it is all worth it!
We would like to thank everyone who has participated in helping get things done in preparation for this special bull sale. It is special because it is an Inaugural sale at our new Ranch. A new start, a new beginning…We are not going anywhere. We are interested in providing for years to come bulls for your operation that will produce daughters that require less feed to do their job year after year! Understanding Our Terminology
AGE OF DAM
This is the age of the cow when she raised the calf that is now a coming two-year bull.
UDDER SCORE
This is a visual score given the day she calves and while her calf is tied up being weighed, tagged and tattooed. We have no bad bagged cows. This score is simply a teat placement score. If her teats are hanging at the same depth she gets a “3” score. If she has any type of slanted udder where the front two teats are higher than the back two she gets a “2” score.
FRAME
This is a visual score that is taken the day the bulls walk into the picture pen. The majority are moderate in frame meaning they are no more than a frame score 5.
DISPOSITION
This score also is taken on picture day. The moment the bull or heifer steps into the picture pen the score process begins. If the bull walks in and is calm in his demeanor the entire time then he gets a “3” star score. If, at any time the animal shows any sign of nervousness they immediately get a “2.5” star score. If, the animal is nervous throughout, trots or runs around they get a “2” star score.

Philosophy
We are developing a program that emphasizes slow, natural development and focuses on maternal, moderate, and easy fleshing traits. Replacement heifers are chosen based on how they breed up in their cycles, size, fleshing ability, and overall visual confirmation. In our environment, harder doing cows naturally fall out of the herd.
Bull Development
“A Different Kind of Test” Simply put…We just don’t feed our bulls much!
Rather than put our bulls in a yard to see how well they perform on a buffet of high energy feed, we intentionally give our bulls less of a lower quality feed to see how well they perform.
Bulls that pass this “test” are genetically “easy fleshing” and the daughters out of them will require less of your $$$ to keep them in production year after year!
Fleshing ability is so crucial when improving replacement females because it is directly related to fertility, longevity, and ultimately your bottom line.
Slowly grown “Ranch Raised” coming two-year old bulls last longer and do not fall apart. Our customers throughout the country love this!All bulls in the sale have passed breeding soundness tests and are easy fleshing.
Females
We are very proud of our mother cows for all we expect and require of them during the year. We run our cattle in thick, steep canyon pastures, so structural correctness and good feet are a must. Mother is expected to make the most of her environment traveling the canyons while maintaining her condition, raising a good calf, and breeding back. These cows are efficient, deep bodied and there’s not a mean one in the bunch!
Our cows are bred to be easy fleshing and are managed that way. They go to work everyday without pampering. We run them the same way we ran our commercial herd. If they are open in the fall, raised a bad calf, or are poor doing, they get culled. OCC, Beckton, 5L, PCC, and Ozark Hills genetics are working very well for us in the Sandhills and also for our customers throughout the country. Not only are they nice to look at and gentle, but they are moderately framed, easy fleshing and stacked with strong maternal qualities.

COWHERD- BUILDING TRAITS
Profit begins with reproduction. Producers who can count on a higher percentage of pregnant heifers will have a larger number of replacements that they can cash crop. The Red Angus HEFIER PREGNANCY (HPG) EPD predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age.
CALVING EASE is a trait of major economic impact. Heifers that experience calving problems require additional labor and are less likely to rebreed. Red Angus completely describes calving ease with Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM) EPDs.
Annual cowherd feed costs represent producers’ largest expense, and simply maintaining the cowherd’s body weight and condition accounts for 65-70% of that total. Red Angus’ mature cow MAINTENANCE ENERGY (ME) EPD arms producers with a tool to help keep feed costs in check. Efficient, easy-fleshing Red Angus replacements help you get a handle on feed expenses and make the most of available forage.
Females that stay in the herd reduce replacement rates…and provide more valuable heifers to sell…a huge economic driver for cow/calf producers. Red Angus customers have the advantage of a STAYABILITY EPD, which predicts a bull’s ability to sire daughters that remain productive past the age of six.

RED HIDE COLOR improves HEAT TOLERANCE for both southern cowherds and summer feed lots. Additionally, Red Angus have no diluter genes, so you will never get gray calvers when Red Angus are mated to Continental cattle.

Johann Zietsman said after seeing this bull… “This is the best bull in the Red Angus breed that I have ever seen.” After watching Hobo’s video you will see what a stud this bull is. One of our best friends managed the ranch that Rick Marshall owned south of Ainsworth, Nebraska where Kaycee Hobo called home and we had the opportunity to see him in person. Red River was the lot six bull in our 2022 sale and was purchased by our friend Bill Cupit of Paris, Texas just south of the Red River. Before sending him to Texas we had him collected and he will be a sire that will used for years to come. He was used as a yearling on a group of older cows and the day we pulled him out he hadn’t lost an ounce of condition. His calves are super nice to look at and we will be calving his first set of daughters this spring.

X Factor G79 is bred 84S combined with a super Roy Bebee cow crossed with one of the prettiest females we own who is a 5L Tradesman daughter. He is as big gutted and thick as they get and you can sure see it in his calves. We used this powerful, deep bodied Magnum son as a yearling and the day that we pulled him off of his cows it was observed that he hadn’t lost an ounce of condition. He was our Leadoff bull to start our 2023 sale and his owner Craig Drueke of Nebraska has been extremely pleased with him and was kind enough to send this picture to me this past summer. The picture was taken on August 26 after he’d already been with cows for 60 days.

One of the things that has been impressive to observe over the years of using 84S progeny is the high libido that they carry and the daughters that they produce. These bulls want to breed cows and breed a lot of them is exactly what they do! When Chuck and Annette Steffan of Heart River Red Angus stopped by to check out OCC Flagstaff 862F they noted that some of their best females were 84S influenced. Jason Appelt of Nebraska owns J153 and is extremely pleased with him as well as his other Sandman bulls that he has.

Sale Terms & Conditions
The Auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.
Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with Sale Management prior to sale.
Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to Buyer, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.
A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal.
All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal in accordance with prevailing State/Federal Regulations.
Announcements from the auction block shall take precedence over the sale catalog and/or any additional information printed regarding the animal(s) sold.
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The seller, auction facility, and sale manager assume no liability for any accidents or losses that may occur.
The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitute a separate transaction.
