INTRODUCTION London Westbank Gallery is proud to announce Smile Britannia, a charity art auction taking place at the House of Commons on Saturday 13th December 2014. The charity art project, launched by the Notting Hill based gallery, is in collaboration with the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation and Temwa. A collection of contemporary & urban artists including Richard Long, Nick Walker, David Walker, Inkie, RYCA and Mau Mau have created and donated unique artworks encompassing the theme ‘Contrasts’. The auction will be hosted by hip hop auctioneer and Babyhead front man, Tom Mauger with breaks being dropped by DJ’s every time a lot is sold! The idea for the auction originated from the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation’s charitable initiative ‘House the House’, created by London Westbank Gallery and hosted by MP Mike Weatherley in March 2013. Winners of this national DJ competition received over £25,000 in music production courses and musical equipment, with the overall winner playing a historic set in the House of Commons with support from Fatboy Slim. The first Smile Britannia art auction was held on Friday 13th December 2013, the theme of the event was ‘things that make you smile about Britain’. This sell out event raised a total of over £80,000. It was the first of its kind - a groundbreaking night where some of the UK’s best contemporary and urban artists auction off their work to support projects improving lives across the globe inside inside the Houses of Parliament! Last year pieces from Banksy, Nick Walker
and Shepherd Fairy went under the hammer. The 2014 Smile Britannia Event is hosted by Andrew Bingham MP and he states; “I am delighted to support this unique event and I hope it will raise lots of money for the cause. To have so many artists represented in Parliament at this auction is incredible, a very positive display of generosity. I was asked to support the event by Mike Weatherley MP and looking at the work of the organisations involved I was delighted to be able to help” With special thanks to Project Audio for providing the sound and lighting equipment and to the Groucho Club for hosting the after party. We would also like to thank Jake Davis Design for donating their time and talent to designing the catalogue and to Ripe Digital for the print. Plus a big thank you to Proxibid for hosting the online auction.

Beneficiary: Smile Britannia Project Smile Britannia is a charitable project launched in March 2013 at the houses of Parliament with The Last Night a DJ Saved my Life Foundation. Dedicated to the use of Art as a tool for social regeneration and community; Smile Britannia aims to provide an accessible education to London’s youth in urban and street art. Using world class graffiti and contemporary artists we will teach young people cutting edge artistic techniques and styles, making a profession in ‘art’ a viable career option for later life. Last year saw Smile Britannia fund workshops with Goldfinger Projects striving to inspire some of London’s most diverse communities through the creative re-use and recycling of furniture and other household objects. Since December 2013 over 25 workshops were delivered to a total of 215 participants. These workshops were either provided free to local organisations, community groups and residents, or at a very low cost. Feedback from participants
has been extremely positive: 100% of participants said they enjoyed the workshop, and 98% responded ‘Yes’ or ‘Possibly’ in response to the question ‘Are you more confident to re-use/ recycle/upcycle items at home?’ Smile Britannia also sponsored numerous art workshops and exhibitions at London Westbank Gallery which benefitted various groups from the community including pensioners, young offenders, and children from dysfunctional families. An exhibition called “Made Corrections” featuring photo portraits of under-age Lithuanian life –prisoners helped to raise awareness and bring art supplies to prisoners with otherwise no access to art or art materials. Smile Britannia also contributed towards funding for the first official Carnival book which documented the history of the Notting Hill Carnival and its community. Major plans for 2015 include bringing art projects into the lives of the under-privileged and hard to reach individuals.
Beneficiary: Last Night a DJ Saved My Life Foundation What we do Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation is a charitable foundation providing a platform for the dance music industry to make a positive impact to communities across the world – Changing lives, saving lives.
We aim to support and promote the importance of Set for Peace as a major tool in raising awareness of Peace One Day. Current figures indicate that, globally, over 1.5 billion people are aware of Peace Day (Mckinsey report). By bringing people together in a positive reflection on peace, we are contributing to making this a selfsustaining annual day of global unity.
Activities in 2014 With the money raised from the 2013 Smile Britannia auction, The Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation has continued to engage with the global dance music industry, forging partnerships with DJ acts, record labels and promoters to get involved in 2014, including Defected Records, Hed Kandi, Zoo Project and Warp Records.
This year we engaged DJs in: Australia, China, Chile, Colombia, Congo, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Haiti, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Maldives, Moldova, Pakistan, Peru, Rwanda, Rumania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, USA, Vietnam, Wales, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Our most successful coalition this year has been with the internationallyrecognised Peace One Day organisation where we supported their ‘Set for Peace’ initiative, which highlights the power of dance music to bring people together and act as a tool for positive change.
We are excited that the collaboration between London Westbank and Temwa can happen again this year and collectively our networks of friends and artists can continue to help make a positive difference in 2014/15.
“When you’re listening to dance music, for that one moment it’s just you and the music. You are at peace.” This moment is what Set for Peace brings to thousands of people around the world, with DJs dedicating their sets to Peace Day, on 21st September each year. This date is unanimously adopted by every member state of the United Nations as a day of ceasefire and non-violence. Peace Day is a moment for everyone around the world to come together and celebrate the power of individuals to create change.
Beneficiary: Temwa Temwa works to support the people of northern Malawi. This area is one of the most disadvantaged and remote regions in the world and Temwa remains the only organisation working with many of the communities in this region. To support the achievement of lasting change, we train villagers to grow a variety of vegetables and fruit to improve the nutrition in their diet. We plant trees to combat the devastating effects of deforestation. We run HIV testing clinics and work to combat the stigma surrounding those who test positive. We build school blocks and fund students through their secondary school education. We enable entrepreneurs to turn their business plans into reality with small business loans. But crucially, these projects are all driven by the communities we serve. Temwa has strong links with the urban art scene and has been supported by a wealth of talented artists since its conception in 2003. An art event called ‘Art For Africa’ is held each year in aid of Temwa in Bristol and has raised more than £100,000 since its founding. Over the last 10 years, Temwa has grown and developed alongside the urban art scene. Artists have become established on a world-wide scale, and Temwa’s projects have expanded to help tens of thousands of people dramatically improve their lives. The kindness, generosity and dedication of these artists has enabled Temwa to go from strength to strength. With the money raised from the 2013 Smile Britannia auction, Temwa was able to train over 1,400 Malawian farmers in sustainable agricultural practices. Because of the generosity
of artists and buyers, that’s 1,400 farmers who are now able to feed their families and pass this knowledge on for generations to come. Temwa also used the money to support groups of vulnerable HIV positive teenagers to access vital information on health, reproduction and nutrition. We are delighted that many of the artists who were involved in our first art auction 10 years ago will be contributing to the Smile Britannia collection tonight. In 2006, a law was enforced in his native Barcelona which outlawed painting on the street... this is how ‘Art is Trash’ was born. LOT NO: 5 ARTIST: Mr Jago TITLE OF WORK: Van Dyke Two DIMENSIONS: 82cm x 131cm MEDIUM: Indian ink, spraypaint and acrylic on paper ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,560 Since graduating from the University of the West of England in Bristol in 1998, Duncan Jago’s work has undergone a prolonged and continuous process of abstraction. Duncan’s early – doodle-derived – mark making evolved deliberately into his current way of working; the droid-like figures of his formative, commercial illustration slowly enveloped in ever-deepening layers of colour and shade. Most recently, Duncan has taken the idioms of spray painting to a level of sophistication rarely seen in the medium, completely uninhibited by any notions of what spray painting is, or should be.

This led to Will appearing in Scrawl the book, and becoming a founding member of the Scrawl collective. Scrawl, originally published in 1999, was a seminal book documenting a new movement in street art, graphics and illustration. Will was chosen as one of the original artists for the collective, noted for his representations of fluid movement, unique narrative driven composition and line work. “There is a fluidity and energy in Will’s work that, although constantly changing, has always existed in a world entirely of his own making. His figures appear to be in a state of perpetual metamorphosis – caught for a brief moment between one manifestation and the next. Always at the mercy of the swirling forces that surround them. From his early scanned and reworked doodles through to his recent, rich, mixed media work, Will has mastered every medium with a dynamism constant in all his work.” Felix Braun, author of Children of the Can

In 2008, at Mutate Britain’s ‘One Foot in the Grove’ in West London, he took the plunge into art to share his passion for life cast sculpture showcasing ‘Boy Soldiers’. This work is now one of his most iconic images and features in the upcoming blockbuster movie Kickass 2.
LOT NO: 10 ARTIST: Tim Fowler TITLE OF WORK: School Sucks DIMENSIONS: 60cm x 120cm x 2.5cm MEDIUM: Acrylic spraypaint and ink on reclaimed school desk ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,200 Tim Fowler’s main subject matter was architectural based until he began exploring portraiture in 2013. The common factor in all of his work is his strong use and thought out juxtaposition of colours. He uses a range of mediums including acrylic, spray paint, marker pens and graffiti inks. Talking about his piece for this event, he said: “I came across this old school desk in the East End of London. It was covered in the scratchings and markings of years of bored pupils. Based on my previous years working in behaviour schools with challenging children, I was instantly drawn to it. The theme for this year’s charity event is ‘contrast’ and this reminded me of one the common phrases teachers used to say to their pupils “You don’t know how lucky you are to be able to go to school.” I used this iconic image of a child soldier on the desk to show the contrast between the different upbringings of children based on where they are born in the world.”

His work is coveted by celebrity collectors, including: Robbie Williams, Jade Jagger, Massive Attack, Sean Pertwee, Jude Law, Roni Size and Stephen Dorff.
LOT NO: 12 ARTIST: China Mike TITLE OF WORK: A Dance of Two Strangers DIMENSIONS: 89cm x 114cm MEDIUM: Mixed media on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,900 China Mike’s paintings are a celebration of mark making, colour and the impulses of the creative process. Regardless of the subject matter, he is always trying to capture a sense of spontaneity and honesty through mark making. He tries not to concern himself with the artifice of beauty, instead allowing colour and form through creative reaction to produce their own aesthetic quality, one that feels less forced, deliberate or artificial. His work largely focuses on figurative motifs but he often tries to subvert the natural familiarity of any subject matter with a shroud of ambiguity. He paints with a variety of media, as each one gives a breadth of possibilities with which to make his mark.
LOT NO: 13 ARTIST: DANK TITLE OF WORK: Puddles DIMENSIONS: 77cm x 102cm MEDIUM: Mixed media on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,500 Passionate about his ‘Urban Impressionism’ technique, DANK (Dan Kitchener) explores light, and its effects on everyday scenes and landscapes. With his electric palette, his ‘spontaneous’ reactions create an intuitive often evocative mood of a scene, rather than an attempt to replicate its actual appearance in life. Having proudly worked with Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie, Calvin Harris, Lenny Kravitz, The Prodigy and a host of other artists and stars, Dan’s work spans all media and is followed and collected all over the world, including America, Australia, Japan and Europe.

Edition of 12 ESTIMATED VALUE: £650 Beejoir’s trademark slurs and rants have appeared on walls all over the world, and his unique style of formulating two very different images together, has created some beautiful and powerful images over the past few years. Among his best known images are his LV Child, Turin Scam and his dripping spot paintings. His trademark slurs and political rants have appeared on walls from Bangkok to Shoreditch. He had a sell-out show in Asia in 2007. Painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and stencils are his media. Contrasting visual elements and saturated colours make his work personal and accessible eye catching. In the form of stencils and stickers, the streets of nearly every major city on the planet have been decorated with this now iconic motif. LOT NO: 17 ARTIST: Belinda Frikh TITLE OF WORK: La Discrete DIMENSIONS: 100cm x 100cm MEDIUM: Giclee Print. Edition of 25 ESTIMATED VALUE: £1,500 Women, as interpreted by Belinda Frikh, ooze sexuality. Emboldened by this, she is unafraid to channel her inner Bardot. With a haughty display of women of all varieties, she challenges you to ignore her wares. Her women (to call them girls would be extremely rude) embody the heady Biba era before female sexuality was politicised, and success was won with one smouldering look across the bar. Belinda Frikh’s fashion and illustration background are evident in her striking lines and analytical composition, while at the same time her collage style, belies her devotion to the cult of film. Born in the Annecy region of the French Alps, she studied Fine Art at L’Université de Beaux Arts and a Masters degree at the Arts Appliqués in Lyon. Education was soon eclipsed by the lure of London, where she has since worked as an in-house illustrator for various designers, including Julia Clancey and Sonja Nuttal, as well as creating work for clients including Bonds Australia, Levi’s, Sony and MTV. The true allure of Belinda Frikh’s work lies in the menage-a-trois of Art-Nouveau, the Pre-Raphaelite Sisterhood and the seductive imagery of the 1980s. This recipe has proven time and time again to awaken a carnal desire in us the audience, that becomes steadily uncontrollable with each perfectly imperfect women we see.
LOT NO: 18 ARTIST: Mr Cenz TITLE OF WORK: Reflections DIMENSIONS: 122cm x 153cm MEDIUM: Spraypaint on canvas ESTIMATED VALUE: ÂŁ1,500
Mr Cenz has been scribbling on surfaces since 1988 when he first discovered hip-hop culture and graffiti art. He soon became obsessed with this new and exciting art form and after a few brushes with the law he decided to find ways of developing his skills legally. Since his first commissioned mural at 11 years old, he has continued progressing and experimenting with his art and set up his own company Positive Arts. This has led to a career as a professional graffiti artist, several solo shows in London and high profile commissions internationally. His distinctive work can currently be seen all over streets of London. It features layers of intricate and flowing letterforms, shapes and line work, which are abstracted in a unique and aesthetically pleasing way. His style is full of funk and movement and fuses different skills together such as photorealism, illustration and graffiti letterforms. His work is open to individual interpretation and has been described as surrealist graffiti art for the soul. He works hard to make sure each piece he creates is very individual and distinctive in its quality. His influences range from the old school graffiti artists that inspired him as a kid such as Dondi and Mode 2, to abstract expressionist painters like Paul Klee and Roger Hilton. His new work focuses on female faces, which he distorts in his trademark style. He works from portrait and fashion photographs to create unique interpretations, which are abstracted in a spontaneous and freestyle way to create interesting and mysterious compositions. These pieces are a melting pot of all the different influences and technical skills he has acquired over the years.

Pulling influence from popular culture, the natural world and religious iconography, she has been exhibiting her work throughout the UK and internationally since 2008. Growing up in a small Cotswold town instilled a ‘cohabitation’ with nature that has never really left Gemma. LOT NO: 27 ARTIST: Yuliya Danylyuk TITLE OF WORK: Smoke and Mirrors DIMENSIONS: 75.5cm x 56cm MEDIUM: Hand finished print ESTIMATED VALUE: £2,000 “Footloose and fancy-free, I was born in the Soviet Union. My motherland, Ukraine, younger than me, had not much to offer. At the age of 13 by luck of accident, I ended up spending three months in Barcelona, working as a dressed-up doll of fashion. Shortly after that I left for Tokyo, where I kept coming back every few months until I was 17. So I could say, I grew up in Japan. It became my adopted motherland. My home for a short while until I realised that some are just born to ramble, and I was a natural nomad by chance. As I turned 19 (two years into my university), I went to China and Hong Kong. A year later I moved to London from where I kept strolling down the map and found myself in New York. Pulsating with the oddness of life, and in the irony of the surroundings I lost myself to useless work, just to be found in my dream of Neverland. It led me to the tip of the world, where by observation, planes don’t leave a trace in the sky. Cape Town was where it all started. Ink dropped on the pages and shaped imaginary in storytelling. Short after my new discovery, I moved back to London and remain here since. Welcome to my inner world of picture thoughts and illustrative talking.” Yuliya Danylyuk
