CANNING
To densify and intensify the three neighbouring property plots, 2, 4, 6-10 MacArthur Place North, turning them into an integrated Living Neighbourhood. In intensifying the three plots, you will design shared amenities, productive outdoor green spaces, a better integration between building and landscape, ecological enhancement strategies, and activation of laneway interface. You will turn the original single occupancy residential into an interconnected 1-3-storey dual (or triple) occupancy (courtyard compound/townhouse/duplex typology).

LIVING HOUSE: My Place, Your Place The brief: Develop the design of one of the three Living Neighbourhood properties, 2 MacArthur Place North. Building upon your conceptual design ideas, the schematic massing/composition and site plan of the Living Neighbourhood, develop your ideas in greater detail by moving from the scale of neighbourhood into the scale of a residence. Design a programmatic, spatial and massing configuration of a compact and adaptable dual occupancy residence. The client: The household will consist of a working couple with one young child and the grandparents from one side of the family. The couple purchased the property on 2 MacArthur Place North with a substantial financial support from the grandparents who have retired and would like to ‘downsize’ from their suburban house to live closer to their children and grandchild, as well as to Carlton’s abundant urban amenities (shops, clinic, parks, civic places such as library, museum and gallery, etc.). The client would like the house to be designed into an adaptable dual occupancy that can accommodate three differing decades of generational evolution.
