Semester Community Design Winter 2017
Our concept is the green urban mosaic; working with the grid to create pocket areas for live, work and play in the community with open access to green space and public space for residents and community members. Our concept links the mosaic pieces together to create pathways and corridors to transverse the site, hopping from one mosaic piece to the next as you move from low density housing neighborhoods to mix use streetscape and to parks and open plaza. It is possible to cross the site through the green mosaic network on your way to work, to the bus or to the coffee shop. Team: Luozijie Xie Phyton Phthorรก Location New Toronto, Toronto, ON

(Connection, Habitat and Regatta)
Professor Karen Landman
2nd Place OSSGA 2016 Student Design Competition
This concept combines themes of connection, habitat and regatta together to transform Burlington Quarry into a natural haven for both humans and native wildlife. To build those connections, the design calls for the construction of an education centre, a grandstand for sporting events, a conservation area, improvements to the surrounding trail system, and a realignment of the Bruce Trail system to allow visitation of the site’s rehabilitated habitats. Phasing Diagrams (35 years)
• CHR wants to create an education centre, which will connect people with nature, informing them about the Green Belt plan, the Niagara Escarpment plan, and Conservation Halton. A regional connection will also be established by bringing the Bruce Trail through the site. • CHR incorporates essential amphibian habitat, which is made up of wetland and woodland environments. This allows many amphibians, specifically the Jefferson salamander that has been located adjacent to the site, to complete their life cycle. Habitat is also incorporated into all of the built structures on site. • CHR contains a world class water sports facility used for regattas and will also provide a training site for Canadian athletes. The location of this facility is located close major urban centres in Southern Ontario, allowing for easier access for athletes.

The design aims to create a community for multi-generations. There are three types of housing type in the site, such as single houses for families with kids and extended families, medium density apartment and high-rise apartment building for students, singles and young couples. Each type of user would be able to use the public area in several ways.
