Mini Cakes: Something New and Different

Mini Cakes: Something New and Different The uniqueness of mini cakes makes it something to look forward to in any occasion. They are a bit similar to a cupcake when it comes to size but a lot more different in taste and other things. Basically, they are smaller versions of a regular cake which can be decorated in any design, motif or theme. While these are also baked, they do not use the same pan as that of regular cakes. Add more fun to your dessert with these small concoctions. Pile them up as tiered mini cakes and have fun.

When it comes to baking your favorite cake in miniature sizes, you start off with a cake batter over a sheet of a specialized cake pan. The size of the pan will be dependent on the number of mini cakes you will be baking. After this, you let the batter cool off. This is the time you will want to choose the shape you intend for the mini cakes. There are round and square cakes, but the latter is more preferred. You can also use a regular cookie cutter to match the shape that you want. This will handle your round cakes well enough due to it having higher walls which allows for a much deeper cut.

With the cookie cutter, press it way down the cooled cake sheet. If your cutter is not that tall, you arrange it so that the cake comes out thinner. Layer two to three cutouts one on top of the other in order to come out with a taller version of the mini cakes. Cut as many shapes as you can and need.

After you are done with the cutouts, place them in the freezer for a few minutes. If you do this, it will be easier to frost them up. Meanwhile, add some color to the icing. After the mini cakes are taken out of the freezer, frost them up smoothly. To make this method easier, just add the right amount of water or milk to the icing until it comes out with a thinner and more manageable consistency. This will make it easier to pour over the cake. When all of the mini cakes are frosted, place them individually on a cooling rack that has a pan underneath to catch any frosting that gets spilled. Ensure that the frosting is completely dried before you add your decorations.

For the decoration, fill up a pastry bag with mini pastry shells, colored icing and start decorating. Fold the tip for a three dimensional effect then pipe them up onto the cakes. You can make a lot of things such as polka dots, sea shells, stars, swirls and creative borders. A few and simple decorating technique goes a long, long way and adds appeal to the cakes.

When making mini cakes, it is important to remember a few things. You can use fondant icing to cover them up but make sure that they can easily be poured. For a more unique decorating technique, you can add the names of each guest on top of the cake. If the mini cakes are for a children's party, you can have them decorate their own cakes as a fun and creative activity.
