The project addresses this space as the heart of a socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhood that is in the midst of the tech boom and rapid gentrification through improved local and city wide connections, universal accessibility, maximizing play and gathering opportunities for diverse users and local residents. A modular and multifunctional city wide system is developed in providing improved connectivity to not only for children to schools, but to the city as a whole.

The new fence is a unique design element threading across the front of the school yard. It provides locations and support for a diversity of activities, such as seating, tables, lighting, planting, play structures, games, art installations, bike parking. It provides a maximum flexibility of functions while giving compositional structure between the school and the street.

TIDAL WETLANDS
44
Coastal marshes and estuaries are currently being reshaped by changing ocean and atmospheric conditions through sea-level rise and increased extreme storm events. Many projected increases in sea level are expected to result in loss of tidal wetlands and their component species. In addition, changing sediment loads, extreme tide and storm events, and shifting salinity levels will affect tidal marshes by altering the plant community and structure that provide critical habitat for endangered species. Efforts to anticipate coastal ecosystem change have largely relied on global or regional data, and therefore it remains unknown how sea-level rise will impact nearshore habitat at local scales (USGS). This projects takes place in the lower reaches of the Petaluma River Corridor between downtown Petaluma and the confluence with San Pablo Bay. The river functions as a tidal estuary, inundated with brackish to saline water and subject to twice-daily tidal changes. The marshes that form in the inter-tidal zone, here and throughout the world, are among the richest ecological resources on earth. PROPOSED LANDSCAPE BENEFITS • Increase the natural sediment source, organic and mineral inputs to keep pace with SLR through a connection to an upland source available above the Petaluma marshes. • Created a variety of habitat types for native flora and fauna. • Provides recreational, interpretive and educational opportunies for thousands of visitors each year while limiting visitor access to sensitive areas.

MUCH MORE THAN A LOT UC DAVIS
SPRING 2012 ABSTRACT
UNDERGRADUATE THESIS
For my thesis project I chose to
explore parking lot culture, use and design. My project was divided into four sections:
1
A brief history of the car and the development
of the parking lot to illustrate how the rapid expansion of the parking lot drastically changed our landscape.
2
Dedicated to the environmental impact of
parking lots and how we use them in ways not anticipated by their designers or owners.
3
Explores parking lots that have been given
more thought and that are better incorporated into the fabric of their surroundings.
4
Pulling from the knowledge I gathered from
the first three sections, I redesigned two existing parking lots with two distinct uses in mind, one that allows the car to dominate and one that reflects possible alternative uses appropriate for the location.

INTO THE LOT
This is a view into the parking lot from the north west corner of 4th Street and Hearst Avenue. Pushing the parking stalls back from the dge of the street allows for an extension of the pedestrian activity that lready exists along 4th Street and eliminates the current dead zone at his end of the parking lot.

This parkway brings you through the site into the parking lot. The parking is LOT shaded by the trees planted between the parking INTO lot THE from north cornerinofrows 4th Street and Hearst Ave. Pushing stalls and at the end of each section of stalls. The parking lot itself is of the the parking stalls back from the edge of the street allows for an extension heavily equipped for collecting stormwater. pedestrian activity that exists along other blocks of 4th Street.
Within the parkway there is a memorial pathway for the Ohlone Tribe

FLEXIBILE “rooms break up the lot through landscaping and driving surfaces that are more textured than asphalt. This diagram shows how the parking lot can be broken up in three ways. I used a farmers market to illustrate the effect. In each circumstance there are enough parking spots to accommodate the users.
PARKING LOT #2 MILL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA zoning: neighborhood commercial, historical, professional administration, single family residential, multi-family residential, open area, community facilities, planned development includes: commerical strip, grocery stores, parks, spas, salons, art studios, galleries, architecture firm, health clinic, banks, pet hospital, autoshops, fitness center Diagram shows urban conditions and surface lots' coverage. Does not include residential driveways or parking areas.

PAVING PATTERN IN THEORY
URBAN STREET / RIPARIAN CORRIDOR
The design for this parking lot was based on
stregthening the connection from the city street to the natural riparian corridor. To achieve this, I created a paving pattern through pixelating images of the creek and nearby Mount Tamalpais to create a visual connection as well as an abstract one. The pixels represent the creek fading into the street. The paving pattern is created with permeable pavers of various shades.
