“For if history records good things of good men, the thoughtful hearer is encouraged to imitate what is good; or if it records evil of wicked men, the good, religious reader or listener is encouraged to avoid all that is sinful and perverse, and to follow what he knows to be good and pleasing to god. bede

BRIEF
Commissioned by The British Glass Manufacturers Confederation, BGMC, to create a lasting experience with the use of glass on the site of St Pauls church and Monastery, Jarrow. I have created a space in which glass expresses the fragility of history, how precious history is and how glass can shield and protect this in order to create a space in which time slows down. The site has been expressed through directed sight in order to see the detail where it may be lost in an entire space of stone. My design takes a simple approach to layout by focusing on the details of the site and creating a glass palace which floats ghostly within the space. Structurally the glass would be supported by a hidden steel framework that would not compromise the glass. There will be a specific finish to the glass in order to enhance the experience within the space through a ‘self cleaning’ coating. This will allow rain to fall away instantly rather than to cling to the glass. Adding to the concept of the installation having little to no impact on the site itself including the elements that have contributed to the decay and erosion of the ruins Materially I have focused on a use of frosted and clear reflective glass laminated together. This creates a reflective side that reflects the stone and creates views and the frosted glass to calm the space in order to keep concentration whilst travelling through the site on a journey of contemplation.
